Welcome back, custmers! I recently took a vacation from the video store to go on a cruise with my wife. I've had cruises on the brain ever since, so what better time to recommend some of my favorite films that take place on ships! OVERBOARD (1987)Handyman and single-father Dean Proffitt sees an opportunity to get even with a pompous heiress named Joanna after an accident leaves her with amnesia. Dean takes advantage of the woman's lack of memory and convinces her that she is his wife and the mother of his four children. What starts out as a simple bit of revenge gets complicated as relationships are formed… and broken. Starring real life couple Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn as Dean and Annie, with appearances from Edward Herrmann, Roddy McDowall, and Mike Hagerty. CABIN BOY (1994)In this utterly bizarre comedy starring Chris Elliott, Nathan Mayweather is a spoiled and tone-deaf “fancy lad” who accidentally boards the wrong ship and finds himself sailing the seas with a grizzled crew of career fishermen. The plot is silly, the jokes are weird, and the comedy is abstract. One moment cabin boy Mayweather is talking to imaginary cupcakes and in the next, he's being rescued from the depths of the ocean by Choki — half-man, half-shark. Cabin Boy was such a box office failure that director Adan Resnick literally never directed another film. I love this movie and my wife will get in her car and leave the house when I watch it. You'll have to decide for yourself if it's for you.THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE (1972)If you've ever wondered what's the worst that could happen while sailing on a cruise ship, you'll soon find out. Due to a series of unfortunate events, the unstable ship is knocked over by a 90-foot-tall wave. Passengers must work together to find a way out of the upside-down cruise ship before it sinks to the bottom of the ocean. This multi-Academy Award winner features an all-star cast including Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Shelly Winters, Red Buttons, Carol Lynley, Roddy McDowall, Jack Albertson, and more. CITY HUNTER (1993)Jackie Chan is known for his wacky action flicks, and this may be the wackiest of them all. In City Hunter, Chan plays Ryu, a private detective hired to find a missing woman. Ryu and his assistant Kaori track the woman to a cruise ship and follow her there, only to discover the ship is being hijacked by terrorists. Ryu is the ultimate ladies man — they love him and he loves them. City Hunter is part comedy and part action. It's like if they remade Porky's and added machine gun wielding terrorists who constantly mow down passengers in cold blood. Is this film for everybody? No. But is it for anybody? Also, maybe not. Jackie Chan said City Hunter is the least favorite film he ever worked on, which made me pick up a copy and add it to the video store's library.Usually when my wife and I go on cruises the only thing I worry about is them running out of pudding or margaritas. After watching these I'll be keeping an eye out for terrorists, gigantic waves, and terrorists. If any of those things happen I'll cross my fingers and hope for amnesia. Happy viewing and thanks for visiting our video store! Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. This is a public episode. A. We're backpacking across Europe all month long and we've been circling back around to France for weeks now. What can we say? France loves their movies. We've even got a couple of movies this month that are French movies whose directors aren't even French. For today's French feature we're gonna get a little dirty like some stinky muskrats on the banks of the Seine. It's the river barge life for a newlywed couple who live their lives on a barge with an old Salty Crewman, a Cabin Boy and about 20 cats. Seems like a fun romantic adventure for a hot second until you smell the cabin. How you gonna keep a girl on the farm after she's been to town? How you gonna keep a girl in town after she's seen a barge? How you gonna keep a girl on the barge after she's seen ‘Ol Gay Paree? We discuss Jean Vigo's final film from his all-too-short life. The 1934 romantic comedy “L'ATALANTE” moves along dreamily and displays a sense of love and passion that really isn't as common in film as you want it to be. Great character acting and genuine laughs. You can see its foundational roots in French cinema. "Cabin Boy" is a surreal comedy directed by Adam Resnick and produced by Tim Burton. The film stars Chris Elliott as Nathaniel Mayweather, an overprivileged, arrogant young man who has just graduated from the prestigious Fancy Lad School.Nathaniel plans to sail to Hawaii aboard a luxurious cruise ship to take up a cushy job arranged by his father. However, due to a mix-up, he boards the "Filthy Whore," a decrepit fishing vessel crewed by rough-and-tumble sailors. The mismatched Nathaniel is forced to adapt to the harsh and comically absurd conditions of life at sea.The crew, led by the gruff Captain Greybar (Ritch Brinkley), initially disdain Nathaniel's snobbish demeanor but eventually come to tolerate his presence. As Nathaniel bumbles through various misadventures, he encounters bizarre characters and fantastical sea creatures, including Chocki the half-man/half-shark (Russ Tamblyn) and a bizarre six-armed woman (Ann Magnuson).Throughout his journey, Nathaniel undergoes a transformation, learning valuable lessons about humility, hard work, and camaraderie. By the time the ship reaches its destination, Nathaniel has evolved from a pampered aristocrat to a more grounded and self-reliant individual."Cabin Boy" combines absurdist humor with whimsical storytelling, creating a unique cinematic experience that has earned it a dedicated cult following despite its initial box office struggles.Friends of the Show1 Man Mafia (twitch.tv/1man_mafia)Jayke The Gamer God (twitch.tv/JaykeTheGamerGod)IB Best Gaming (https://www.tiktok.com/@ibbestgaming)Support the Show.'Beavis and Butt-head' Cover art created by Joe Crawford
Once upon a time, there was a movie about an unlikeable fancy lad joining the unlikeable crew of a ship called The Filthy Whore after David Letterman tried to sell him a monkey, but at least it had Tim Burton as the director. Until it didn't. This week, Shat The Movies brings you "Cabin Boy," the 1994 box-office bomb that nearly sank Chris Elliott's career and left the Shat Crew scratching their heads. On one hand, this movie is terrifically quotable, wonderfully quirky and loaded with comedic talent. On the other hand, viewers might find themselves asking where the budget went, what year it's supposed to be set in and why a flying cupcake is spitting tobacco. Was "Cabin Boy" horribly marketed? Did the writers run out of material? What would happen if a Viking had sex with a shark? We dive into these questions and more in this week's episode. Cabin Boy (1994) by Bob Sham & Friends
We are, once again, back. We're also back on our bullshit reviewing a movie with a cult following and a strange cultural footprint that we've been meaning to get to the bottom of. In honor of its 30th anniversary, we're taking a look at Cabin Boy, the first and only big-screen collaboration between Chris Elliott […]
This story is by the writer Erin Somers. She has a novel, Stay Up with Hugo Best, and has been published in The Paris Review, The New Yorker and elsewhere. Performing it, we've got two actors who found the funny with both the words and each other. The first, Paget Brewster, is best known for her role on Criminal Minds. Additionally, she has appeared on Friends, Community and Comedy Central's Another Period. Playing off her is Andy Richter, known for his years on Conan and Late Night with Conan O'Brien; but has also appeared in cult classics like Cabin Boy and done many voiceovers for animated movies like Madagascar. The episode is hosted by Aparna Nancherla. The story was recorded at SketchFest in San Francisco.

This week, the randomizer goes all the way back to 2019 to pick yet another NatGeo special! And since it's become abundantly clear that every NatGeo special is exactly the same, I'm gonna devote the rest of this description to talking about the life of actor/comedian Chris Elliott. Born in 1960 in New York City as the fifth and youngest child of Bob Elliott of Bob & Ray fame, Mr. Elliott was hired as a production assistant on Late Night with David Letterman and soon began playing various wacky characters on-camera. This led to supporting roles in such films as Manhunter, The Abyss, Groundhog Day and There's Something About Mary, as well as starring roles in his own FOX primetime sitcom Get A Life and the feature film vehicle Cabin Boy. More recently, in the 2010s he had his own Adult Swim series Eagleheart, and a regular supporting role on Schitt's Creek. Chris Elliott's surreal, offbeat style of humor has been a comedy staple for over forty years and counting, and he continues to be an always-welcome character actor to this day. This week we're talking about two feature films - Cabin Boy starring Chris Elliott and The Intersection starring Sharon Stone and Richard Gear. We've never seen either of these movies previously and have a lot of thoughts. We debut a new segment called "who says no" where we recast and change up these movies in modern times, and we play a quick round of Trivial Pursuit.
For the first month of 1994, we take to the high seas!Fancy lad Nathaniel Mayweather (Chris Elliott) finds himself in the adventure of all adventures after mistakenly boarding the wrong ship. Where he was meant to reach his father's Hawaiian hotel, this ship full of scurvy sea dogs is set for deep sea fishing. Desperate to return to shore, Nate and the crew get into several weird mishaps before coming to a perfectly rational understanding. He can simply be their new….Cabin Boy!
Recent Fancy Lad graduate, Nathaniel Mayweather (Chris Elliott) is meant to set sail aboard the Queen Catherine to Hawaii but since he can't stop being a huge dick to everyone he gets stranded and walks in the wrong direction to a small fishing village where Old Man, David Letterman sends him to board the Filthy Whore. After he dupes simple Kenny (Andy Richter) he manages to stowaway and wakes to a drunken, stinkin' crew - Skunk (Brian Doyle Murray), Big Teddy (Brion James), Paps (James Gammon) and Captain Greybar (Ritch Brinkley) who are all now lost at sea. When Kenny goes overboard, the crew forces Nathaniel to take his place on the way thru Hell's Bucket where he draws the attention of the shark man, Chocki (Russ Tamblyn), plucks swimmer Trina (Melora Walters) out of the ocean and gets his pipes cleaned at Callies (Ann Magnuson). Hopefully they can get off this cursed island before Callie's husband Mulligan gets to them in Cabin Boy, this week on Doom Generation.

New Year, New Season. The beginning and the end of Chris Elliot's movie career, the start of Mark Walberg's IRL war franchise, and the stupid show that gave us an even stupider president.
We're wrapping up 1993 Movies with a movie that we've never seen or heard of; Six Degrees of Separation starring Will Smith, Sir Ian Mckellen, Donald Sutherland and Stockard Channing. It was quite the based a true events, taken from a screen play film that inspired some fun conversation. We predict what next month's movies (Cabin Boy and Intersection) are all about and of course we go off on tangents and talk about the celebrities that we are only a few degrees away from.

In an alternate timeline, Tim Burton directed this 1994 starring vehicle for Chris Elliot, it went on to make millions, and it cemented Elliot as a true comedic voice of his generation. Instead it was directed by Adam Resnick, it tanked, and killed their careers a bit.
Captain Salt in Oz by Ruth Plumly Thompson audiobook. A voyage on the famous Nonestic Ocean! What could be more thrilling than that? We—many of us—have taken trips on the prosaic Atlantic or even Pacific, but have we found a SEA FOREST with flying fish and swimming birds? Have we been pursued by a real SEA SERPENT, or had our ship transfixed by the immense ivory tusk of a NARWHAL? Have we come upon the glittering island of PEAKENSPIRE, or made friends with a charming talking hippopotamus? Yet all these things and more befall Captain Salt, one time Pirate and now Royal Explorer of Oz, and his merry crew. They come back with their hold bursting with unique and fascinating specimens, with their chart crowded with new islands, claimed for Ozma, and drawn so realistically by the delightful little boy Tandy, Cabin Boy and Artist of the Expedition. When Edgar Allen Poe wrote his only novel in 1838, he included a grim story about a young cabin boy who was killed and eaten at sea so that other sailors could survive. 46 years later, an uncanny coincidence took place. This episode is all about the case of Richard Parker. We welcome back Comedian and Writer Jay Black to the show to play the quick quiz! This movie has famously been mocked for being awful ever since it first came out and was nominated for two different bad movie awards. But, does it deserve the hate […]
It's never easy writing the show notes when you weren't present for the podcast itself and consequently don't have the overall tone of the discussion to guide you. For instance, the guys talked about the Top 5 Hacking or Computers Scenes, but was any of it interesting? Almost certainly not. And what will special guest Rupert have to say about it all? And who is Rupert anyway?THE HISTORY OF FUTURE FOLK (2012) has sat unwatched in my Netflix queue since I first joined the service, so I was delighted when listener Pearcey suggested we should watch it. Charming, low-budget sci-fi which sees Nils d'Aulaire as Bill aka General Trius who came to Earth many years in search of a new home for his fellow Hondonians but decided to stay after hearing music for the first time and falling in love. Soon his blissful and peaceful new life is disturbed by the presence of another of his race, the not quite right Kevin. With a refreshing lack of cynicism and a strong alien bluegrass soundtrack, I'm hoping the rest of the Dads and the enigmatic Rupert feel the same about this indie treasure. CAPTAIN PUGWASH is the spineless and stupid animated pirate captain of the Black Pig and is renowned for being awash with sexual innuendo. Everyone knows for instance about the characters Seaman Stains, Master Bates and Roger the Cabin Boy, and that ‘Pugwash' itself is derived from an Irish word for rimming except of course none of that is true, and reality is far less exciting though there is a character called Willy if you really love that sort of thing. Hopefully the mysterious Rupert will set us all straight. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Time to dive in again, maniacs! We're still swimming down the Underwater Uneasiness theme for this month with James Cameron's sci-fi flick The Abyss! Tune in as we discuss other topics such as Cabin Boy himself Chris Elliot popping up in a cameo role, our loving nickname for Micheal Biehn's wacko character, and an important question: did this movie introduce the world to the Nintendo Power Glove?
David and Ryan hydrate and take their vitamins before another marathon catalog session, covering days 2 through 18 of Prop Store's summer auction. They cover such topics as hand-illustrated storyboards, crew gifts, Beetlejuice maquettes, the delight of Cabin Boy, a starter Conan collection, bearer bonds, Home Alone newspapers, the Last Action Hero, Masters of the Universe, original Tim Burton art, The Offer, cosplaying in screen-used Star Trek uniforms, David again compliments the Star Wars prequels, Tropic Thunder, Stan Mikita's Donuts tray, and lots of comic books and comic art!
