We're talking Gyro and the Argonauts on this episode of the Fan2Fan Podcast! Joshua Pruett (Phineas and Ferb, MST3K, The Last Comics on Earth) joins Bernie and Pete to talk about his latest book! Josh is the writer of Gyro and the Argonauts - "the totally (mostly) true story of the first “Greek Geek,” a super fanboy vineyard grape-squisher named Gyro (like the sandwich), who learns there's so much more to the maligned monsters of mythology (such as the CYCLOPS, the MINOTAUR, and even MEDUSA herself), and so much less to his favorite heroes (including Perseus, Heracles, and Pegasus) than he ever dreamed." “With big laughs, big heart, and big monsters, Gyro and the Argonauts is timeless fun for everyone!” – Max Brallier, sandwich expert and author of the #1 New York Times bestselling series The Last Kids on Earth Josh shares the book's origin, his writing process, his journey as a creative and more. He also discusses how he was able to take his love of dad jokes, Ray Harryhausen, Douglas Adams and insert them into the book to tell a personal story that's fun for the fans of all ages. The arcade was our favorite place to hang out. But there were some games that we blew thousands of quarters on because they were too hard. What do people think were the hardest retro arcade games? We get frustrated until we're broke on Enjoy Stuff. Pass the token 'pon the left hand side! We're gonna need ‘em all with the hardest games in the arcade. Don't get frustrated! Enjoy Stuff.   News In retro news: Garfield phones invade the beaches of France! The quality of this Ray Harryhausen movie may not have been at the top of his list, but it was still an interesting idea and had some crazy genre mashups. Shua found some cool YouTube channels that have some great, high quality classic Pink Panther cartoons. It's a great way to have some retro in the background.      Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay gets real with the 2011 Hugh Jackman movie Real Steel. This often overlooked film has a lot of great robot action in the boxing ring, like a mechanical Rocky. Read his article on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy Video Games!  We loved spending time in the arcade as we were growing up. We tried to use our quarters wisely and budget them for the maximum experience possible. But sometimes we had to cram a lot of them into games over and over because they were so hard. Which ones were the most challenging? Were they the same ones you struggled with? Let's see what the internet said and decide if we agree.  What challenging games did we miss? Back from the holiday break, Byrd and Matt set their sights on Ray Harryhausen's classic series of Sinbad films; the 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1957), the Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973) and Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977) are still among the most celebrated fantasy films of all time.  After getting tired of monsters tearing down landmarks, stop motion animator Ray Harryhausen decided to make a different kind of monster movie by drawing inspiration from the Arabian Nights folktales of Sinbad, a sailor who would go on swashbuckling adventures and fight monsters, sorcerers and more.  We discuss the history of these influential films, and discuss how they hold up all these years later.  We talk Cyclops, dragons, centaurs, troglodytes, and more!  Relax and enjoy the conversation!

Clash of the Titans continues Nerd Legion's 1980s fantasy marathon, taking us into Greek mythology (kind of) with Perseus' battles against Medusa and the Kraken. While straying very far from its source material, the film gave us Ray Harryhausen's last crack at stop-motion and effects wizardry as a capstone to a multi-decade career in Hollywood. Maggie Smith and Lawrence Olivier also add some dramatic weight as Greek gods to counter-balance the action sequences of Harry Hamlin's Perseus. A little bit silly, but still compelling, Clash of the Titans remains a fantasy classic and a must-watch for fans of the genre. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In episode 30, Johnny talks to Academy Award-winning art director and production designer Grant Major.
Described by Vanity Fair as ‘the architect of New Zealand's greatest cinematic achievements', Grant has an impressive body of work.
His work in the early 1990s on Jane Campion's An Angel At My Table led him to work with Peter Jackson on Heavenly Creatures. He remained in the Peter Jackson fold on The Frighteners, followed by the Lord Of The Rings trilogy and King Kong. He also worked on Niki Caro's Whale Rider in the early 2000s, and recently reprised his collaboration with Jane Campion on the Oscar-nominated The Power Of The Dog.
Grant has been nominated for five Academy Awards, winning the Oscar in 2003 for his work on The Return Of The King.
Their talk covers Grant's career from working in New Zealand television in the 1970s and the BBC in the 1980s, to conquering Hollywood with Jane Campion and Peter Jackson throughout the 1990s and beyond. They discuss Grant's influences from filmmakers like David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick and Ray Harryhausen, and Grant shares what it's like to witness the first and only take of a devastatingly emotional Oscar-nominated acting performance!
This conversation was recorded online in mid-July 2024.

Release the Kraken! Twice!Clash of the Titans had been an idea since the late 1950s, with writer Beverley Cross writing a treatment in 1969 called Perseus and the Gorgon's Head. At the time, producer Charles H. Schneer and legendary animator Ray Harryhausen were working on other films, and so what became Clash of the Titans would have to wait until 1977 to start pre-production.It would eventually release in 1981 and include not only one of Harryhausen's most memorable creatures, Medusa, but also signal the beginning of the end of his career. Clash of the Titans would be his final film, in part thanks to a scathing review.Clash of the Titans would inevitably be remade one day, and that remake fell to Louis Leterrier, and new writers Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, using an original script by Travis Beacham based on Cross' original script. Updated to modern audiences' needs for big budgets, big-name actors and huge CG spectacle, Warner Bros would notice the huge 3D revolution started by James Cameron's Avatar, and decided to convert Clash of the Titans to 3D in post-production... Things are moving along nicely. Keep an ear open for when we pull the trigger, hopefully in a couple of weeks!   And it's time for the Classic Tales Book Club to meet again! Keep an eye on your inboxes on Tuesday for our monthly newsletter which will contain the zoom link. Our zoom meeting will be on Wednesday, April 10th at 4:00 PM Pacific time, 7:00 PM Eastern. We'll talk about the satirical nature of Gulliver's Travels, and the power of satire. See you then! Follow the link in the show notes to subscribe to our newsletter, and get the zoom link on Tuesday. Mark Twain is quoted as saying that, “a classic is a book which people praise and don't read”. Gulliver's Travels likely fits into this category for a lot of us. We've seen the Max Fleisher cartoon, or the Ray Harryhausen film in the 70s, or the film with Jack Black in 2010. But we've probably never read it. Or we tried, and gave it up. So, what is the lasting appeal of this difficult book? Gulliver's Travels was originally published in 1727. Swift's novel is a satire of British monarchy and Imperialism. He succeeds in taking the mundane, or something we largely take for granted, and pushing it to the extreme to show its absurdity. This goes for everything from governments to our own physical bodies. And yeah, nothing is safe, so get ready for some bodily functions we'd rather not talk about to come front and center.   Gulliver records his travels to several different lands of adventure. Instead of going through the entire book now, we'll tackle them one voyage at a time. Then we'll take a breather. This first stint will be the first part of the book – A Voyage to Lilliput in three parts. Gulliver travels to the land of Lilliput, as well as a land of giants, and also visits the dystopian world of the Houyhnhnms (hoo-IH-nims), among others. I hope you like it. And now, A Voyage to Lilliput, part 1 of 3, from Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift. Jovial Jay and Shua film one frame at a time as they look back at the work of this legend on Enjoy Stuff!   It's time to indulge in some retro movies! Arnold Schwarzenegger shares some motivational life tips with his new book Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life. You may be surprised how useful some of his tips are.    Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay goes back (and forward) in time with the 2002 adaptation of the classic HG Wells story The Time Machine, starring Guy Pierce. Although some aspects are changed, it is a pretty good story with some surprisingly good themes. He has also been updating locations from Marvel TV and movies, including the Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter series. Play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to  SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua break down each episode of the Hawkeye series and more.     Enjoy Movies!  Don't stop-motion believin'! In 1933 a 13 year old Ray Harryhausen saw the movie King Kong and it forever changed the way we would experience movies. It inspired him to experiment in techniques of stop motion animation that he would continually improve throughout his entire career.    His impressive resume includes classics like Mysterious Island, Jason and the Argonauts, and of course Clash of the Titans. Many of his movies aren't even remembered for who starred in or directed them, but for Ray's special effects. His patented Dynamation technique of incorporating his stop motion creatures enhanced all these movies in a way that made you feel like you were part of the dream.    Countless creators were inspired by Ray's effects, such as Steven Spielberg, Terry Gilliam, Peter Jackson, Tim Burton, and of course the man who carried the mantle, visual effects legend Phil Tippett. Their movies continued to evolve Ray's techniques including how CGI even works today. We are all indebted to Mr. Harryhausen and are grateful for his work.  Which of Ray Harryhausen's works do you like? Have you ever made a stop motion movie? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Release the Kraken!” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know.
