This week we're reviewing the return of the Scary Movie franchise. We discuss the endless list of dated references, significant time spent on non-horror movies, the Wayans penchant for punching down, and whether or not Gen X are the new Boomers. Plus, what makes a truly great horror parody, and what films SHOULD you check out? Racheld drops some truly mind blowing trivia about the original scary movie, and we debate what's maybe the most important question, do the Wayans brothers actually LIKE horror movies? Scary Movie (AKA Scary Movie 6) is an upcoming American horror-parody film directed by Michael Tiddes and written by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Craig Wayans, and Rick Alvarez. It is the sixth installment in the Scary Movie film series, following Scary Movie 5 (2013), and the spiritual sequel to the first two films. It stars Marlon, Shawn, and other returning actors including Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, Jon Abrahams, and Anthony Anderson. The plot follows Cindy Campbell and her friends Ray Wilkins and siblings Shorty and Brenda Meeks reunited when the same masked killer from the first film resurfaces. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Everything old is new again, especially at this week's box office. The Wayans Brothers' nostalgia-driven sequel Scary Movie opened to a franchise best of $55 million. Unfortunately for Masters of the Universe, the 80s-tv show inspired live action adaptation barely scraped more than $29 million - a true bust for a film that cost more than $170 million to make. Horror darlings Obsession and Backrooms are still ruling the roost at theaters, both having crossed over the $200 million threshold this past weekend. Here's the news you didn't know you wanted, Hugh Jackman is set to star in a Ridley Scott-directed adaptation of the truly classic novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. Adolescence writer Jack Thorne will pen the script that stars Jackman as the pirate Long John Silver himself. The original novel was published in 1883 and has been adapted many times. The project is ready to be bid on by all studios. Netflix has announced an official title and revealed a logo for an upcoming Ghostbusters animated series which will officially be titled Ghostbusters: Nightshift. The series is expected to debut sometime in 2027. The upcoming John Wick spin off series currently titled Caine has added Bill Nighy, Dacre Montgomery, and Mason Thames to the cast. The series is being directed by martial arts master Donnie Yen and is currently in production in Budapest and Hong Kong. Netflix has revealed a first look at Scooby Doo from the upcoming live action Scooby Doo series which will premiere sometime in 2027. A short teaser was also released online to make the reveal. This will be the first time the iconic character will be played by an actual dog. Deadline has reported that Jason Momoa is departing PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures' film adaptation of Helldivers, based on Arrowhead Game Studios' video game franchise, from director Justin Lin. The reason for his departure is unknown.

With movies like “Once,” “Begin Again” and “Sing Street,” Irish filmmaker John Carney has found a way to make movie musicals relevant for contemporary audiences. His latest effort is "Power Ballad." Kansas City's Paul Rudd stars alongside Nick Jonas in the story of a struggling wedding singer who bonds with a pop star. When the former boy band member steals a song from his friend, things get dicey. Rudd is as good as he's been in years, and Jonas is solid in a role tailor made for him. “Power Ballad” is a rousing crowd-pleaser that's filled with catchy music. If you are familiar with the phrase, "By the power of Grayskull," then the clunky action fantasy "Masters of the Universe" might be nostalgic for you...but that's really all it's got going for it. In this update of the 80s adventure cartoons based on the line of Mattel toys, Nicholas Galitzine plays an annoyingly uncertain He-Man, Jered Leto provides the petulant voice of Skeletor and Idris Elba is wasted as a washed-up warrior. The movie's tongue-in-cheek approach never works. “Masters of the Universe” lacks the power. The Wayans Brothers are back with yet another ultra raunchy horror movie parody. Despite its title, "Scary Movie" is actually “Scary Movie 6,” the latest installment in the franchise that started 26 years ago. It reunites many of the movies' familiar cast members including Marlon and Shawn Wayans and a few dozen other Wayans, Regina Hall and Anna Faris. Sadly, the Wayans have officially run out of ideas for “Scary Movie” and try to fill the gap with repetitive and aggressively offensive material. Now that's scary.

BEFORE SCARY MOVIE 6 THERE WAS THE OG PARODY! In the lead-up to the brand new Scary Movie reboot / Scary Movie 6, we're going back to the original horror parody classic that started it all: Scary Movie, from the Wayans Brothers, spoofing Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, slasher movies, teen horror, and every inappropriate 2000s comedy rule imaginable. In this Scary Movie reaction, Jackie watches the original for the first time while Greg revisits the movie that traumatized his Catholic school childhood in the funniest way possible. We break down the Ghostface parody Scary Movie opening, the Scary Movie Wassup scene reaction, Marlon Wayans as Shorty, Anna Faris as Cindy Campbell, Regina Hall as Brenda, the Brenda cinema scene Scary Movie, the Scream parody reaction, the I Know What You Did Last Summer spoof, and all the wild jokes that absolutely feel like they could never be made the same way today. With the new Scary Movie reboot bringing the franchise back, this felt like the perfect time for a Scary Movie franchise retrospective and Scary Movie original vs reboot conversation. The Wayans Brothers helped define the modern horror parody with this movie, and now that Scary Movie 6 is bringing back major franchise faces, we're looking at whether the 2000 original still holds up as one of the best horror parodies ever made. Is Scary Movie 2000 still hilarious? Is Anna Faris one of the most underrated comedy leads of the 2000s? Is Regina Hall's Brenda the funniest part of the franchise? The Brain Came Back – Cecy Galvan on Five Years After Stroke

Recovery After Stroke

Play Episode Listen Later May 17, 2026 55:44

5 Years After Stroke: Recovering Her Voice, Her Memory, and Her Will to Walk Again On 29 April 2021, Cecy Galvan was doing what she had always done, working a client event, surrounded by people, moving at full speed. A celebrity publicist with a client list that included the Wayans Brothers, Cecy had built a career on being present, persuasive, and always on. Then she collapsed in a bathroom in Boston. She was 47. A bartender called 911. Doctors found a tear in her aorta. She woke up three days later with a scar and what appeared, initially, to be a second chance. But four months later, she was back in the hospital for aortic repair and heart valve replacement surgery. On 15 September 2021, as she came out of anaesthetic, she had two strokes, one affecting her speech and motor function, one involving her cerebellum. In the hours it takes to close a chest, Cecy’s life changed completely. Five years later, sitting down to tell her story, she said something that stopped the conversation: “I just told my friends the other day that my brain is finally back.” When the Warning Signs Are Easy to Miss The week before her collapse, Cecy had been dizzy. Vertigo for two days, the kind that made her afraid to drive. It was during the COVID period, and going to a doctor felt like an unnecessary risk. So she pushed through, got on a plane, and made it to the event in Boston. This is not a story about a woman who was careless. It is a story about how stroke symptoms, particularly in the lead-up to a cardiac event, can present as something mundane and easy to dismiss. Vertigo. Fatigue. A feeling of being slightly off. For Cecy, those were the only signals before everything changed. Recognising early warning signs of stroke remains one of the most critical conversations in stroke prevention. If symptoms persist, even mildly, seeking medical review is always the right call. What 5 Years After Stroke Really Looks Like Cecy’s recovery has been shaped by two distinct strokes, both occurring simultaneously during surgery. The effects are layered and ongoing. Her right vocal cord is paralysed. She walks with a forearm walker indoors but has not yet been able to take it outside. Her core is still rebuilding, and her cerebellum, responsible for balance and coordination, remains affected. Her vision changed: she now needs glasses for reading, something she never needed before. For the first three years after her strokes, she barely remembers anything. She kept a journal and relied on her sister’s videos to piece together what had happened. Her sister and brother-in-law became her primary carers. They modified their home, building a ramp, converting a shower for wheelchair access and showed up every day with a consistency that Cecy describes as the quiet foundation of her survival. Her parents, both in their late eighties, also cared for her until they passed her father at 90, her mother at 89, in the years following her strokes. The grief of losing them, layered on top of the grief of losing her former life, has been one of the heaviest parts of the journey. “My whole life changed overnight.” – Cecy Galvan And yet she keeps going. She does speech therapy exercises daily, recording herself and playing them back. She uses both hands, intentionally brushing teeth with her non-affected hand, rinsing with her affected one. She gets massages weekly. She reads and re-reads books her memory hasn’t yet retained. She is, in her own words, constantly doing the work. The Myth of the Recovery Plateau Two of Cecy’s doctors told her she would not walk again. One sent her an email last year to confirm it. A third told her she would improve within six months. None of them has been entirely right. None of them has been entirely wrong. But the idea that recovery has a fixed deadline, that the brain stops responding to rehabilitation after a set number of days, is a narrative that does genuine harm to stroke survivors. Cecy’s experience over five years is evidence against it. Her lung capacity has measurably improved. Her speech, which was largely absent for years because she was afraid no one would understand her, has progressed to the point where she is now giving interviews. Her memory, the one she describes as the most disorienting loss, has started to return not all at once, but in a way she can feel and name. Neuroplasticity does not operate on a clinical deadline. The brain continues to find new pathways when given the right conditions: repetition, intention, rest, and time. Bill’s book  Bill’s book The Unexpected Way That A Stroke Became The Best Thing That Happened explores this in depth, drawing on both the research and the lived experience of survivors who were told they had reached their ceiling and then kept going anyway. What Newly Diagnosed Survivors Need to Hear Cecy’s advice to someone at the beginning of their recovery is grounded in her own experience of those first disorienting months: the early period matters enormously. The first three to six months are when the brain is most responsive to rehabilitation, and the work done in that window has an outsized impact on long-term outcomes. But that is not where recovery ends. What carries a survivor through the years that follow is not speed, it is consistency. It is doing the small things every day. Using the affected hand even when it spills water. Recording your voice even when you hate how it sounds. Crying a little, then trying again. Cecy’s five-year goal is simple and unambiguous: she is going to walk again. She does not know exactly how. She does not need to. The direction is clear. Keep Going Recovery after a stroke is rarely a straight line, and no survivor should navigate it alone. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesIt would appear as though Ryan Reynold's social media stunt we discussed last week is having the intended effect as a few of our favorite trades can't seem to come to a consensus. First, in the August 15 edition of Heat Vision, The Hollywood Reporter's exclusive column for all things comics, horror and sci-fi, Borys Kitt claimed that their sources confirmed Deadpool's inclusion in Avengers: Doomsday. However, later that day Deadline refuted the speculation by citing their own sources who said the actor has not been seen on the London set and is not intended to appear in either upcoming Avengers film. In less nebulous Doomsday talk, Nightcrawler actor Alan Cumming described his experience returning to the role as healing, after a terrible experience on 2003's X2. It's a big week for DC Studios with Superman hitting Video-On-Demand last Friday and Peacemaker Season 2 premiering this Thursday. While on the red carpet for the show's debut in New York, DC Studios head and Peacemaker's showrunner James Gunn defended Superman's quick availability for home viewing after just 35 days in theaters, by sharing how the film impacts the series. “It's a big part, definitely Superman leads directly into Peacemaker,” said Gunn, while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter. “Superman leads into this show and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker, it's incredibly important,” he continued. Gunn also teased the future for Superman on the big screen, saying, “I've already finished the treatment for the next story in what I'll call the ‘Superman Saga.' The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked-out treatment. I'm working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.”Back to the Wasteland we go, as Amazon's marketing for Fallout Season 2 has begun in preparation for its December 17 premiere, with a full-court press that includes first look images and a trailer that was released earlier today. The images showcase returning characters played by Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, Moises Arias, Aaron Moten and Kyle McLachlan, while the two minute 42-second trailer gave us our first glimpse at Justin Theroux's enigmatic Mr. House and McCauley Caulkin in an undisclosed role, which were of course accompanied, yet again, by the crooning stylings of The Ink Spots. In an interview with Collider, Marvel Zombies director Bryan Andrews confirmed that the series has moved its release date up to September 24th, and all episodes of the series will be available to stream at once. He also confirmed that the four episodes will be rated TV-MA.At a recent London fan event Sir Ian McKellen claimed Frodo and Gandalf will appear in Andy Serkis' upcoming The Hunt for Gollum film without specifying whether he and Elijah Wood would reprise their iconic roles.NBCUniversal announced that it has acquired all rights, excluding publishing, to Robert Ludlum's popular Jason Bourne and Treadstone book series.Weapons took the number one spot at the box office again in its second weekend with a drop of only 43%, bringing its worldwide total to nearly $150 million dollars. Nobody 2 generated around $15 million dollars worldwide in its opening weekend on a $25 million dollar budget.Netflix has dropped a trailer for the second half of season 2 of Wednesday, which will stream on September 3rd.Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers are in talks for a massive overall deal with Paramount that includes both streaming and features with a big theatrical component, something the pair have not been able to get at their current home of more than a decade, Netflix.Original Scary Movie actresses Regina Hall and Anna Faris are coming back as Brenda and Cindy, respectively, for the Wayans Brothers' restart of the comedy franchise, which is eyeing a 2026 release.

The fact that the end sequence cost almost as much as the budget of the original is crazy. So much screaming and nonsense in this one, but a blast to discuss. With the final episode of February, they also want to put some attention to multimedia and entertainment. The show begins with putting attention towards the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live (18:45) which aired earlier in the month. EstoBro comments that the significance of the program did not reflect the historical value of the sketch comedy show, as the hosts ponder how much longer the show will run on television.
