And I think of Babita Deokaran (The Department of Health whistleblower who was murdered). And I see what happened to (Alexei) Navalny (the opposition politician murdered) in Russia…Eventually, if people hate you enough and they've got power, they're going to sequester you and they're going to take you out. And that's what I'm facing now.”

We all remember the devastating consequences of land grabs in Zimbabwe. Chuck Stephens, Executive Director at Desmond Tutu Centre for Leadership and a popular columnist at BizNews, wrote an article published that we published on BizNews.com in which he states that ‘we are starting to see reruns of those horrible scenes.' BizNews founder Alec Hogg interviewed Stephens, who tells a chilling story about his own arrest and “three-night special” in jail over the past weekend. As a 70 year old man, Stephens objectively falls into the minority of those who are vulnerable to severe illness from Covid-19. Throwing him into an overcrowded jail cell – with no charge sheet and having been denied the right to make a statement – is therefore, surely, reckless. Stephens believes that it was brought about by a man with a fierce grudge against whom he won a court case relating to property ownership earlier this year. He believes that land grabs are happening and that ‘covid endangerment' is the weapon being used, stating that; ‘there are forces out there that want your land no matter what they have to do to get it – including some policemen.' His story is provided as a cautionary tale, a testament to the accounts of the past weekend in case of his death.

Chuck is currently the mentor/coach of the first ever library based FIRST Robotics Competition team, the Edgar Allan Ohms, who are here competing at the Orlando Regional today. They are based out of the Regency Park Library where they design, build and test their robots. There is also a lot going on in the Pasco County Library system. Chuck and his coworkers are committed to ensuring that libraries continue to be a place where people can reach their potential. And we have to say that we certainly are impressed. It is refreshing to see how these library branches are reinventing themselves and not only staying relevant but giving back so much to their communities. Not only are there maker spaces where someone can come to learn a craft or teach their favorite hobby, but there are music and recording studios where they can come explore and dabble in an area that they may only have dreamed about. There's also upcoming cooking classes and a community garden in the works. Chuck is also involved with Gulf Coast Maker and Comic Con and ROBOTICON Tampa Bay. In the 4 years that we have been covering the Orlando Regional, we have had the opportunity to see teams grow from rookies into real competitors. We have also had the opportunity to see members of our group grow within the FIRST organization. Some students have become mentors and FIRST VISTAs, and we have had some students join our broadcast team.One of those friends that has grown within the organization is Chuck Stephens. When we met him he was a house painter, musician, tinkerer and maker. Today he works for Pasco County Libraries where he is the mentor for the Edgar Allan Ohms FIRST Robotics Competition team, FIRST Tech Challenge Team Duct Tape will be moving to his libraries next season, and they will be starting FIRST LEGO League teams, as well.
