Joining Josh and Andrew this week, Washington University PhD Candidate Victor Putinier takes them down to post-Summer-of-Love California for 70s cult horror classic Messiah of Evil. Giddily getting into Gloria Katz and William Huyck's “California gothic”, the trio voice their admiration for a film that refuses to draw a clear line in the sand, from its unfinished production, subversion of zombie horror, and somehow doing its own thing while learning from the seemingly disparate works of Italian masters Mario Bava and Michelango Antonioni. Then, they have One More Thing, recommending the new album The Spiritual Sound from death metal band Agriculture, as well as continuing their talk of California Gothic with the 1970 adaptation of The Dunwich Horror. On the next episode, our hosts decide to give themselves a challenge. Venturing further back in film history, Josh and Andrew will pick out movies from the silent era, starting things off with F.W Murnau's The Last Laugh. StageFright (1987), The Church (1989), and Dellamorte Dellamore (1994) Most horror fans are at least familiar with the Italian horror tradition, even if they aren't deeply immersed in it. Directors like Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci, Dario Argento, and Joe D'Amato helped define one of the most prolific and influential horror movements in cinema history, producing a remarkable run of classic films over more than three decades. By the mid-1990s, however, that wave had largely collapsed. Yet, in the final stretch of that "era of terror," horror fans were given something special: four films from a young director named Michele Soavi. Soavi's path into directing was a gradual ascent through the industry. He began as an actor, which got him onto sets, then worked his way up through roles as a crew member and assistant director before eventually stepping behind the camera himself. Along the way, he trained under filmmakers like Joe D'Amato, Lucio Fulci, Lamberto Bava, and Dario Argento, experiences that helped him develop a distinctive voice of his own. In this episode, we're covering three of those four films, more than enough to make the case for seeking them out if you've never seen them, or revisiting them if it's been a while. Because sometimes, it's easy to forget just how damn good they really are. Films mentioned in this episode: Absurd (1981), Amok Train aka Beyond the Door III (1989), Body Count (1986), Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972), The Church (1989), City of the Living Dead (1980), Dario Argento's World of Horror (1985), Dellamorte Dellamore (1994), Demons (1985), Fatal Frames (1996), Ghosthouse (1988), I, Vampir (1957), Nightbreed (1990), Opera (1987), The Sect (1991), StageFright (1987), Suspiria (1977), Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972), Zombi 3 (1988), Zombie 5: Killing Birds (1988)

Bring Me The Axe! Horror Podcast

This week we're heading north to the 51st state of Canada for a listener request. It's Curtains, the 1983 slasher film from producer Peter Simpson who last brought you the smash hit Prom Night. Directed (partially) by cinematographer Richard Ciupka, Curtains is a gigantic mess of a whodunnit that had ambitions to be a North American riff on the movies of Dario Argento and Mario Bava, an arty, very European approach to a violent murder mystery in the giallo style. Unfortunately, this was not what the producers expected and Ciupka bailed on the entiree project leaving it on the shelf for a year before Simpson himself took it down and dragged it across the finish line. In Curtains five young women gather at the home of director John Stryker, a megalomaniac auteur director with designs on producing a film called Audra but not that long ago he was planning on producing it with his muse, Samantha Sherwood who had herself committed to a mental hospital for research. While inside, Stryker moved on from her but now she's out and pissed off. But what's this? A mysterious killer is knocking them all off one by one. You think you know who the killer is, but do you really? American International Pictures had made money with Italian films such as Black Sunday (1960) but would often need to oversee many changes to make the films suitable for an American audience. Their solution was to provide a script and co-produce a film so they could control the content.   The film had a small budget of around $200,000 and although it definitely has its fair share of Schlock, Bava had a reputation for doing a lot on a small budget.  My guests unravel why Mario Bava's reputation and love for this film continue to grow.  Scott Higgins is Professor of Film at Wesleyan University as well as being the Curator of the Wesleyan Cinema Archives.  Russ Hunter is an Assistant Professor in Film & Television Studies at Northumbria University. In this episode we take a trip to Italy for a look at Massimo Dellamano's 1972 giallo, What Have You Done To Solange? This Italian/German co-production was intended to capitalize on both the popularity of giallo in Italy and krimi in Germany, casting an array of English and German actors familiar to fans of krimi and Italian stars of the time for those who can't get enough giallo. A fairly grim entry into the canon, What Have You Done To Solange is a strong starting point for horror fans looking to go beyond the well-known giallo titles from Dario Argento and Mario Bava. We go over the history of giallo, the people who made it, and the economic conditions in Italy which led to its proliferation. In the story, Enrico Rosseni, a horn-dog gymnastics coach comes under suspicion in a series of brutal murders. The victims are all schoolgirls from his team and to make matters worse, his teenage girlfriend, witnessed one of the murders. He'll team up with the police and his severe German wife to crack the code and discover the real murderer, their motive, and learn the identity of the mysterious Solange, who seems to be at the center of all this. What is it about the Italians? The rich food. Thousands of years of incredible art and sculpture and music. Something's in the blood over there that produces a high concentration of moviemakers with incredible lush styles: Sergio Leone, Federico Fellini, Lucio Fulci, Mario Bava, and Dario Argento to name just a few. This week, Secret Movie Club founder.programmer Craig Hammill riffs on what it means to be a "stylist". And why Italian masters like Roberto Rossellini and Vittorio De Sica don't quite feel like part of that category because other traits of their moviemaking dominate.  Craig also tries explores why, even if your aesthetic is different, studying stylists is key to the craft.
