Long before hashtags and apps, patient mentoring thrived quietly in community rooms and support circles—offering emotional validation and practical guidance where clinical care left off. In this episode, Chris Boyer and Reed Smith trace the evolution of peer-to-peer support in healthcare, and how digital platforms have transformed it from local to limitless. They dive into: The History of Peer Mentoring – From 1970s cancer groups to HIV/AIDS buddy programs, peer support has long filled the gaps in clinical care through empathy, shared experience, and trust. The Digital Shift – How platforms like PatientsLikeMe, Reddit, Inspire, and even TikTok created scalable, searchable communities for patients—especially those navigating chronic or stigmatized conditions. Why Health Systems Lag Behind – Compliance fears, cultural resistance, and underinvestment have limited provider involvement, even as patients build robust peer networks on their own. Opportunities for Integration – Peer support could enhance onboarding, post-discharge care, chronic condition engagement, and even brand trust—if health systems partner, not compete. Later in the episode, they're joined by Paul Hoffman, founder of InTandem Health, who shares insights on launching digital peer mentoring platforms—from clinical impact and marketing value to the surprising role peer programs can play in fundraising and health system transformation. In 2025, the most powerful engagement may not be provider-to-patient—but patient-to-patient. Artificial intelligence is already reshaping how some pastors write sermons, lead meetings, and care for people—but what are the theological and ethical boundaries for its use in ministry? In this wide-ranging conversation, Mike Neglia speaks with Dr Paul Hoffman about the promises and perils of AI for preachers and church leaders. Together they explore the difference between narrow and general AI, how it can streamline administrative work, and why it should never replace the Spirit-led work of sermon preparation. This thoughtful exchange offers both caution and clarity for pastors navigating technology in a rapidly changing world.Together, they explore the difference between general and narrow AI, where it can be useful in pastoral ministry (meeting prep, research, organising sermon notes), and where it poses serious spiritual and ethical concerns (outsourcing sermon writing, shortcuts in discipleship). Paul makes a passionate case for the irreplaceable role of the preacher's soul in interpreting and applying God's Word—and warns against any technological solution that would diminish that.Mike and Paul also talk about the pastoral and educational implications of AI use, including issues of plagiarism, critical thinking, spiritual formation, and the need for deep wisdom in an age of endless information. You'll hear reflections on how AI can help—and how it might hinder—our calling to shepherd people toward Christlikeness. If you're a pastor, Bible teacher, student, or church leader wrestling with how to navigate new tech wisely, this episode will offer clarity, caution, and encouragement.

In this episode, we are thrilled to welcome Jean Hoffman Lewanda back to the podcast to discuss her new book, Shalama: My 96 Seasons in China, published by Earnshaw Books. Listeners may recall Jean's previous appearance, where she shared insights about her father, Paul Hoffman's memoir, Witness to History: From Vienna to Shanghai—A Memoir of Escape, Survival, and Resilience. That captivating memoir details how Paul fled Vienna at the age of 18 to escape the rise of Nazism, arrived in Shanghai in 1938, and became part of the historic wave of Jewish refugees who found a safe haven in China during World War II. Jean's new book enriches this family saga by recounting events from her mother Shalama's perspective but presented as historical fiction. Drawing on firsthand accounts, including her mother's, Jean tells the story in Shalama's voice, tracing the family's journey from Harbin to Shanghai during the war-torn decades of the mid-20th century. The book interweaves the family's history with major historical events, including the Sungari River flood of 1932, the Japanese occupation, and the Communist takeover of China.

How can we, as a nation, come together when we seem so deeply divided? In this insightful and thought-provoking interview, SOLA's editorial curator Aaron Lee talks with Professor Matthew D. Kim to discuss his book, Preaching to a Divided Nation (read our review here), which he co-authored with Paul Hoffman. Professor Kim exhorts preachers by saying the power of preaching takes on a new significance in today's rapidly changing and divided world. In their interview, they discuss: Current political rhetoric and its impact on the current state of affairs, the urgent need to seek Christ-like reconciliation even in the face of disagreement, and the importance of fostering understanding and empathy among diverse perspectives. Listen to their conversation as Professor Kim navigates the complexities of multicultural identities, especially within the Asian American context, and sheds light on the challenges and potential solutions for these communities. Division, tension and conflict has always been part of life in a fallen world, but it feels as if it has only increased over the past years. How can preachers address contentious issues in a gracious yet truthful way? How can we balance the tightrope as we attempt to offering a unifying word to a divided congregation? Drs Matthew Kim and Paul Hoffman offer seven steps towards preaching that a seven-step model for promoting reconciliation that unifies rather than causes unnecessary division1. The Theological Step: The Sins of Pride and Prejudice2. The Contextual Step: America's Past and Present Reality3. The Personal Step: Facing Our Sin and Acknowledging Our Prejudices4. The Positional Step: We Are Heralds, Not Heart-Changers5. The Methodological Step: A Homiletic for Reconciliation and Unity6. The Practical Step: Pre-Sermon, Mid-Sermon, and Post-Sermon Practices7. The Categorical Step: Biblical Themes and Texts "Preaching has become something of a dreaded task. With self-appointed authorities declaring on social media what pastors should and should not address--and telling people to leave their churches if pastors don't say the supposed right thing--the pastor bears the impossible task of speaking God's Word to a disinterested and divided world. In a day where cultural land mines abound, the preacher can either dismiss the concerns of her congregation as invalid or irrelevant or become a prisoner to the narratives and perspectives of the moment. Kim and Hoffman give us a better way. They excavate a treasury of theological resources to address the chief causes of division and map the terrain of our cultural dynamics and historical context. They teach us to become aware of our own lens as preachers and to rely on the Spirit to breathe the Word of God to the people of God. The result is a stunning, scholarly, current, and critical guide for preachers to take seriously the complexity of preaching in a rapidly changing world."Glenn Packiam Matthew D. Kim (PhD, University of Edinburgh) is professor of practical theology and holder of the Hubert H. and Gladys S. Raborn Chair of Pastoral Leadership at Truett Theological Seminary, Baylor University, in Waco, Texas. He previously served as the George F. Bennett Professor of Preaching and Practical Theology, director of the Haddon W. Robinson Center for Preaching, and director of Mentored Ministry at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He is a past president of the Evangelical Homiletics Society and has over twenty years of preaching and teaching experience. Kim has written or edited many books, including Preaching to People in Pain (winner of a Christianity Today 2022 Book Award) and Preaching with Cultural Intelligence (the 2018 Preaching magazine Book of the Year). Paul A. Hoffman (PhD, University of Manchester) is senior pastor of Evangelical Friends Church of Newport, Rhode Island. Drs. Matthew Kim and Paul Hoffman are the authors of Preaching to a Divided Nation: A Seven-Step Model for Promoting Reconciliation and Unity. Drs. Kim and Hoffman met at Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary. Dr. Hoffman is lead pastor of Evangelical Friends Church of Newport, Rhode Island, and Dr. Kim is Professor of Practical Theology and the Hubert H. and Gladys S. Raborn Chair of Pastoral Leadership at Truett Theological Seminary, Baylor University. They are passionate about the Bible's vision of the reconciliation of all things in Christ, and they care deeply about the Body of Christ and the Mission of God — and they share how this theology can play out practically in the way that we minister in a world which is plagued by division. In this episode, we talk about when and how Christians should address hot topics in our societies, and some guiding principles for helping people navigate the cultural moments we find ourselves in. Mentioned in this episode is Dr. Kim's book, Preaching with Cultural Intelligence: Understanding the People Who Hear Our Sermons
Zach Hoffman is an award-winning author, transformation coach, and founder of an organization called SWALeadership. My conversation with Zach dives into servant leadership and how his life experiences lead him to make that a focus. As an American football player in Europe, Zach was looked up to by many, especially youth. He realized that sports were his platform to reach people, not his purpose. Zach believes that if you want to earn the respect of others and have them feel you as a person, you have to make it about them, not you. We also talk about emotional intelligence and why it's a key component of leadership. Being genuine and vulnerable goes a long way in terms of inspiring others and being a good mentor. When Zach set out to write his book, he originally intended for his organization name to stand for Swiss Army Leadership, however he changed his mind while going through the publishing process. Due to copywriting issues, he was looking for another name that would fit both his core message and his journey as a former athlete. He then came up with Sensible Worldwide Adaptable Leadership. Zach learned that effective leadership requires you to embrace globalization and intercultural competence. Being able to adjust like a Swiss Army knife to your environment and an ever-changing world is critical for modern day leaders. What's Inside:The importance of servant leadership and what it means. Why street smarts and book smarts go hand in hand in effective leadership. Why it's important to get into the trenches with your clients as a coach. How to deal with ageism in coaching and business. The difference between real and fraudulent leadership. Description: Immediately after last week's school shooting in Nashville, opportunists used it to advance their favorite culture war narratives. Why does this happen after every tragedy, and why are we more likely to empathize with victims we identify closely with? Then, what impact will Donald Trump's indictment have on the 2024 presidential race? Are his evangelical supporters finally ready to move on? And, can preaching really undo the damage and division caused by cable news and social media?
