Madison is getting a new music venue, but unlike other spaces in the city — the priority isn't the audience but instead the musicians. Muso is the brainchild of Hoot'n Annie String Band members Prentice Berge and Cindy Murphy, who wanted to create a space for musicians to rehearse and just enjoy playing in Madison. Host Bianca Martin got a sneak peek of the space, and got into the rhythm and reason behind this new acoustic only spot. Wanna talk to us about an episode? On today's episode of Inside Design, longtime Kandrac and Kole Interior Design client, Cindy Murphy, joins Joann to discuss her recent home renovation. What started as a small kitchen renovation, grew into a much bigger project. Cindy knows what it's like to work through all the excitement and challenges that come with a major renovation, so she is sharing her experience with us today.  Tune in to our conversation to learn why Cindy and her husband chose to stay in their home of fifteen years and undergo major construction, the pros and cons of renovating, and much more. IN THIS EPISODE:  [05:25] Why Cindy and her husband chose not to move and renovate their home of fifteen years.  [07:40] Cindy shares the pros and cons of her house before and after the renovation.  [11:00] Why working with an architect can make home renovations so much easier and unique.  [14:35] Cindy's favorite parts of her new kitchen and other must-haves.  [18:32] Why you don't have to replace your furniture during a home renovation.  [19:13] Cindy reveals some unexpected challenges that came with the renovation.  [21:00] Designers are advocates for their clients.  [23:35] Make sure your builders are experienced with the elements you want in your renovation.  [26:30] Cindy's advice for homeowners about to start a home renovation.  KEY TAKEAWAYS: Before you decide to move or begin a home renovation, ask yourself “what makes you happy?” Just because you are renovating, doesn't mean you have to replace all of your furniture.  Instead, you can replace some throw pillows, your lighting, or your coffee table to give your furniture new life.  Renovating your longtime home can bring out a lot of emotions.  Communication between clients, designers, contractors, and architects is key for home renovations.  Finding the right people to execute unique designs can be tricky.  Finding builders that are experienced with those elements is important.  RESOURCE LINKS: Rothman and Rothman Associates Atlanta Bed Swings Stray Dog Designs Smith's Ironworks Cosentino Madera Arts Jay Scott Studios Wolf Subzero Big Ass Fans BIO: Cindy Murphy is a long time client of Kandrac and Kole, who met Cindy about 12 years ago when she contacted them to help her design a screened porch and outdoor pool area. According to Statista, in 2018, 16,128 cases of online identity theft and 65,116 cases of non-payment or non-delivery fraud were reported to the U.S. Internet Crime Complaint Center. But cybercrime has not always been this prevalent in our lives. Though it is hard to imagine in today's modern world, there was a time before computers where cybercrime wasn't considered a threat. To understand how cybercrime has evolved from nothing to the ubiquitous threat that it is today, we spoke with Cindy Murphy, a retired cybercrime police officer, and the president and founder of Tetra Defense. Brought up around computers at an early age thanks to her father, who taught her how to use DOS and file systems when she was six, Murphy had a technological advantage when it came to her peers. This was evident in high school, she was told she must submit her essay in written form instead of a word processor as it was considered cheating and gave her an unfair advantage. Murphy then went on to serve 31-years in the police force helping to combat cybercrime across the US, before leaving the police force with one year left until retirement. Murphy was offered a very large offer to work for a private company, which she turned down. The company continued to increase the offer, and she continued to turn them down. It wasn't until she was invited to see what they were working on in their forensic lab that made her retire from the police force, almost immediately. They showed her something she "thought was impossible". To find out what they showed her, along with some interesting cybercrime stories along the way, check out this episode of the Brains Byte Back podcast.

Ep 103 | 8/31/2018 Michele Towne has worked in several sales jobs including office equipment and medical sales and advertising sales. Prompted by the magazine RSVP Memphis, in September 2001, she began Inviting Arkansas. It was the first Little Rock publication that covered the city’s social and philanthropic life. She then sold ads for the magazine and assembled a staff of industry people that were stay-at-home moms. Her staff is still all woman. She attributes her success to Willie Oates and Cindy Murphy, both businesswomen and philanthropists. Because Inviting Arkansas covers non-profits, Michele is often in attendance of fundraiser. She has noticed an increase of young people at these events that reinforces the perception that the millennials are a service oriented generation. She was awarded the Hope Award from the Twentieth Century Club, which provides housing for cancer patients in central Arkansas.

Her extensive experience has given her both the real-world experience and the foundation in training that it takes to excel in the mobile forensics field and share her knowledge with others. Throughout her career, Cindy has always looked for opportunities to help in meaningful ways. In one notable case, experts spent a year trying to unlock the phone of a 16-year-old girl who was killed in a tragic traffic accident. As the family prepared to spread the girl's ashes in a ceremony a year after her death, Cindy was given the victim's locked phone. She was able to unlock it, enabling the family to see their daughter's last photos. The family sent Cindy a thank you note that said: "We so appreciate this opportunity you've given us to hold onto a piece of our daughter's life we were sure was lost to us." This is just one example how digital forensics, and a good examiner, can have a tremendously positive impact in peoples lives. Cindy has also developed the " 2016 Women of Influence in IT Security by SC Magazine (https://www.scmagazine.com/women-of-influence/article/530276/5/) . She is also one of the nicest and most approachable people in the cyber security and digital forensic industry. In this interview we discuss starting digital forensics in law enforcement, how she started with mobile forensics in the early 2000's, moving from law enforcement to the private sector, the concerns she has with mobile phones, mobile malware, recruiting and retaining women in DF/IR, developing SANS mobile forensics courses, and much more.
