If you are a regular reader of MinistryWatch, you know that we write a lot about ministries that care for the least and the lost in our culture. The Bible is clear that care for the poor should be one of chief concerns as Christians, but helping the poor in ways that are actually helpful is not easy. The issues are complex, and solutions require wisdom and discernment. One of the smartest, and most compassionate, people working in this field is my guest today, James Whitford. Whitford earned his doctorate from the University of Kansas Medical Center before he and his wife, Marsha, founded Watered Gardens Ministries in 2000. Watered Gardens has been on the forefront of the “effective compassion” movement for more than a decade. In 2019 it won WORLD Magazine's “Hope Award for Effective Compassion.” Whitford and Watered Gardens take no government funds, and they put Scripture front and center in their work. Whitford says that true freedom and dignity cannot flourish if people are trapped in dependence – whether than dependence is on alcohol, drugs – or the government. Whitford has taken the lessons he learned at Watered Gardens and created True Charity, a network of like-minded organizations (now numbering more than 200), that champions the “resurgence of civil society in the fight against poverty.” James has a new book out. It's called The Crisis of Dependency: How Our Efforts to Solve Poverty Are Trapping People In It And What We Can do To Foster Freedom Instead. I've been a fan of James Whitford for a couple of years, and now I've become a big fan of this book. I think every Christian donor who cares about helping the poor should have this book. And if you will stay tuned until the end of the program, I'll let you know how you can get your own copy. But until then, here's my interview with James Whitford. That brings to a close my interview with James Whitford. His new book is The Crisis of Dependency: How Our Efforts to Solve Poverty Are Trapping People In It And What We Can do To Foster Freedom Instead. We are making this book our donor premium for the month of February. That means that if you give a gift of any size to MinistryWatch, we'll send you a copy of this book as our thank-you gift. Just go to MinistryWatch.com and hit the donate button at the top of the page. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. We technical, database, and editorial support from Christina Darnell, Casey Sudduth, Stephen duBarry, and others. I'm your host, Warren Smith. I hope you will join me again on Friday, when Natasha Cowden and I will bring you our take on the news of the week from MinistryWatch. Until then…may God bless you.

He took those early lessons and created his current company, One Planet Group, with the “people-first” culture he wanted all along for AutoWeb. As a result, One Planet Group's success has allowed Payam to reacquire AutoWeb and bring it back to profitability.   In Payam's book, Crossing the Desert, readers take an intimate look at how the paths we choose, the values we embrace, and the systems we decide to participate in (or not) can make or break us, not only financially, but spiritually. Payam's story is a timely reminder that enduring and embracing life's most difficult journeys can lead us to a brighter future—not only for ourselves, but for the people around us, and even the world.   Payam Zamani is an entrepreneur, investor, and the founder of One Planet Group, a closely held private equity firm that owns a suite of online technology and media businesses.   Born in Iran, Zamani was forced to flee at the age of 16 due to his religious beliefs as a Baha'i. He was offered asylum in the United States in 1988, settling in the San Francisco Bay Area. Upon graduation from the University of California, Davis, he and his brother founded AutoWeb, one of the first online car marketplaces, which they took public in 1999.    Since then, he has built and currently owns multiple technology and media businesses, has invested in more than 50 companies, and is striving to redefine capitalism in an attempt to elevate business to serve humanity. E327– Inner Voice – A Heartfelt Chat with Dr. Foojan. In this episode, Dr. Foojan Zeine chats with ELIZABETH HORN, who has been a healthcare communicator for over twenty years and is the cofounder and codirector of The ART of Infertility, for which she has curated thirty exhibits since its inception in 2014. The ART of Infertility was the 2018 recipient of the Hope Award for Innovation given by RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association for its work communicating patient experiences through arts programming with INFERTILITIES, A Curation. Elizabeth Horn, Maria Novotny, and Robin Silbergleid seek to break through the silence, shame, stigma, and isolation surrounding trouble with conceiving or bearing a child while also demonstrating how central creativity is to grieving and healing. Through personal stories, vignettes, poetry, and works of visual art, this collection captures the anxiety, fear, frustration, anger, stress, and sadness familiar to everyone living with infertility—and not just older white heterosexual couples. Infertilities, A Curation honors the experiences and perspectives of a diversity of individuals living with infertility—women and men; white, Black, Latinx, and Asian; single parents by choice; nonbinary and transgender individuals; heterosexual couples; lesbian and queer-identified couples; and anyone with a medical condition that makes conceiving or bearing a child impossible. As the curator stresses, this collection clarifies: “Infertility does not discriminate.” Check out my website: www.FoojanZeine.com.

I am honored to welcome Maria Novotny and Robin Silbergeid to Empowering Chats. I am honored to have these two women on my show today. They have a powerful story to share and one that appears in the book entitled, Infertilities, A Curation. These two women, along with Elizabeth Horn put this book together as a result of their shared experiences around infertility. It all started with Elizabeth co-finding the ART of Infertility, for which she has curated thirty exhibits since its inception in 2014. Maria is the co-director of The ART of Infertility. This exhibit was the recipient of the 2018 Hope Award for Innovation given by RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association for its work communicating patient experiences through arts programming. And Robin is a writer, a teacher and a scholar who has led many writing workshops and professional conference panels on topics related to infertility. These 3 women collaborated in getting this book put together to highlight how the use of visual art, poetry and creative non-fiction could and did have a hand in helping people from all walks of life heal from the diagnosis of infertility. I started this empowering chat by quoting the opening passage in the book, Infertilities, A Curation.  It goes like this, Infertility begins slowly, quietly with questions and uncertainty . . . and infertility begins with a growing awareness that making a family won't be easy. It Won't happen after a month or 3 or maybe even a year. Infertility begins with the choice to have a child. Infertility begins in the doctor's office with tests and diagnostics codes. Infertility begins with sex. Infertility begins with asking a friend to donate sperm. Infertility begins with the arrival of blood each month . . . with a new cycle . . . with optimism and possibility . . . a first attempt at IVF . . . each treatment cycle can work or not. The written and visual art in this book presents emotional beginnings with individuals wrestling with the diagnosis of infertility and what it means to build family in various contexts. It's an emotional process. And both Maria and Robin shared what it is like to live with infertility and what it means for those women or men, or single “want to be parents” who identify as transgender or LGBTQ to get this diagnosis. This book boldly illustrates how creativity can help people heal. One review states, in part, “This daring collection harnesses the power of the arts to dismantle isolation and stigma, letting the light shine through to reveal the hidden layers of the infertility experience.” I am so humbled and grateful for the work these amazing women have done individually and collectively to bring this topic to the forefront. The healing use of art and creative writing has been a gift for those suffering from infertility. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has been a support for someone suffering with infertility or if you yourself have had a firsthand experience with this diagnosis, know that you are not alone. One of India's first supermodels. Actor. Cancer survivor. Mother of twins through surrogacy. Woman of no fixed address. Today I am honored to interview cross cultural phenomenon Lisa Ray. She is an internationally acclaimed performer, philanthropist and star with a reputation for taking on challenging issue-oriented films. Raised in Canada by an Indian father and Polish mother, Ray was discovered while on vacation in India and went on to become not only one of the most successful cover models and celebrities in India but also an acclaimed, award-winning actress who starred in Canada's Oscar nominated film, Water, amongst other prestigious credits. Named one of the ‘Ten most beautiful Indian women of the millenium' by a Times of India poll, Ray cemented her profile as an iconic figure in India before leaving for drama school in London and opportunities around the world. Along the way, Ray found time along the way to host her own entertainment show in India, filmed a landmark music video for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and became the enduring brand ambassador for Rado Watches. In 2009, Ray attended the Toronto International Film Festival in support of her work in two films. The event marked an important public announcement, in which Ray chose to share her diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma with media and the public. The outpouring of support was immediate and overwhelming. She also started a blog (‘The Yellow Diaries') to share her cancer experiences. RFK, Jr., the possibly disqualifying information. Last week, Charlie Kirk shared his notion of RFK, Jr. as President Trump's VP candidate. We had some fun talking about it. Today, we examine the very deep downside of RFK, Jr. Aside from taking on the criminal bosses of Big Pharma and his apparently recent purple-pilling about how The Party is using the lie of a Climate Catastrophe to install profitable tyranny, RFK Jr., has said some pretty horrendous things, like putting people in prison for not backing his climate positions to his indefensible support of Hillary Clinton and his back-slapping the murderous Dictator of Washington, Jay Inslee. There is a lot here and a fantastic journalist named Michael Tracey has compiled a huge volume of background we will share today. All of this said, I would love to see President Trump in a second term, or Governor DeSantis in a first term, put RFK Jr., in chare of dismantling the FDA and CDC. A man and woman have been indicted by a Cherokee County grand jury on charges related to the death of their infant child in 2021. According to an indictment filed Jan. 10, Railey Smelley, 24, of Dallas, Georgia, and Conor Catalan, 23, of Woodstock are each charged with felony counts of second degree murder, second degree cruelty to children and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Smelley is charged with causing the infant to die of asphyxiation, per the indictment. In an arrest warrant filed by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office, authorities say she rolled over the child while under the influence of illegal drugs in October 2021 in a Cherokee County apartment. When he died, the baby was only about six weeks old, according to the sheriff's office. Catalan, is charged with transferring custody of the infant to Smelley, knowing she was under the influence of drugs. Smelley and Catalan were arrested in March after they turned themselves in, according to the sheriff's office. Overnight in late October, a fire broke out in the ceiling of the dry storage room at Williamson Brothers Bar-B-Q in Canton, causing the temporary closing of a beloved restaurant. After almost four months of repairs, the restaurant's owners expect to open its doors sometime between mid-February and March 1. The plan to reopen the restaurant marks a happy occasion for the restaurant's owners, staff and customers. Although the restaurant was damaged, the spirit and optimism of the staff was not. The fire is said to have started in the dry storage room due to wiring in the ceiling, Morales said. As the fire grew stronger, the smoke made its way throughout the restaurant, damaging walls and rooms in the rest of the building. After receiving the call, Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services dispatched firefighters to the restaurant at 1:01 a.m. October 23, according to the fire department. While there may be some minor changes to the restaurant due to repairs, the overall look and feel of Williamson Brothers will remain the same as it was before the fire. Si Woo Kim of South Korea birdied his final two holes to fire his second straight 6-under 64 and win the Sony Open on Sunday in Honolulu. Kim's eight birdies and two bogeys helped him finish the week with an 18-under 262, beating third-round leader Hayden Buckley by a stroke. The key moment came at the par-3 17th, where Kim's tee shot missed the green. He chipped in from about 28 feet away for a birdie that proved pivotal. Kim said that before hitting his chip, he heard a crowd roar in the distance that told him Buckley had made a birdie at the hole behind him. Etowah grad Chris Kirk finished in third at 15 under. Kirk led after Friday but was unable to hold on to the lead. The tour resumes this weekend with the American Express in La Quinta, California. Private First Class Silas John Bisbee from Woodstock, has graduated from the U.S. Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island. Bisbee successfully completed 13 weeks of basic training as one of 72 recruits in Platoon 4044 and graduated in November. While in recruit training Bisbee was recognized as an expert shooter, squad leader and honor platoon along with the squad. After 10 days leave he reported to Camp Geiger for Marine Corps combat training. Bisbee is a graduate of Woodstock High School. Four finalists have been selected for the Service League of Cherokee County's annual Heritage of Hope Award, the organization announced. After receiving nominations from across community members, the Service League has selected Josh Bagby, Julie Darnell, Juvenile Court Judge Jennifer Davis, and Michele Prance as finalists for the award. The Heritage of Hope Award was established by the Service League to honor a person who is making significant contributions to children in the Cherokee County community through their time, actions, talents and dedication. According to the Service League, the four finalists have consistently demonstrated qualities of compassion and service to either one organization or a variety of volunteer activities that benefit children. They also serve as role models for compassion and service to children in need and strive to make Cherokee County a better place. Cherokee and North Cobb went back and forth for three quarters on Friday night in Kennesaw, but it was Cherokee that built a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and held on through the final buzzer for a 75-61 win. Cherokee held an 11-point advantage at halftime despite five lead changes in the second quarter alone. It scored 13 unanswered points before halftime, with Lawrence Sanford and Tayden Owens leading the charge. North Cobb came out of halftime with a purpose and, led by Evan Daniel's seven straight points, it cut Cherokee's lead to single digits. It cut the deficit to just two points at 49-47 after Jalan Johnson was fouled on a 3-pointer and converted all three free throws. On the next two possessions, though, Cherokee converted on back-to-back 3-pointers from Sanford and Cameron Pope, pushing its lead back up to eight points. Cherokee led 60-49 at the end of the third quarter and outscored North Cobb 15-12 over the final frame to finish off a sixth straight win. Cherokee's win streak continued, and momentum is on its side after knocking off Walton for the second time on Tuesday. It improved to 14-2 overall and 2-0 in the region, with another region matchup against Kennesaw Mountain coming on tonight. #CherokeeCounty #Georgia #LocalNews           -          -          -          -          -          -          The Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast is local news for Woodstock, Canton, and all of Cherokee County. Register Here for your essential digital news.             This podcast was produced and published for the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger and TribuneLedgerNews.com by BG Ad Group     For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com/    https://cuofga.org/   https://www.drakerealty.com/   https://www.esogrepair.com/                 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Raising a Child with a Disability: Embracing What "Could Be" versus What "Should Be"

This comment hit me like a ton of bricks. We often get caught up focusing on what should we all be doing versus what we could do.  Kristin Smedley, author, advocate and mother to two blind children shares her story about how she came to terms with this. When her first son was diagnosed as being blind, she fought her emotions of all things he should do but won't be able to.  It was his ability to embrace the life he knew, where he was so happy, that opened her eyes to possibilities. Then when her second son was also diagnosed, she was ready to help him and his older brother focus on what they both could do, if given the tools and assistance. How much do we who have all our senses miss because we focus on what we think we should be doing, in many cases to please others and in doing so miss the world around us.  A wonderful story about her journey as author, advocate and leader in the blind community focusing on changing the perspective of others. One of my favorite conversations. Enjoy.
