We've reached the finale of our Learn How To Learn series. I've invited my friend Jonathan Crabb to discuss what might be the ultimate learning accelerant: learning together. You've built your personal learning system, mastered the fundamentals, and maybe even implemented some multipliers along the way. But what happens when you add another mind to the equation? It's not just addition -- it's transformation.Through stories of our reading retreats, peer discussions, and our unique "thinking partnership," Jonathan and I reveal how learning relationships can break through your perceived ceiling. And you can apply these same strategies and insights to your learning journey too. The right learning partner doesn't just help you grow faster. They help you grow in directions you'd never discover alone. As we close this series, discover why the journey from student to peer might be the most powerful learning path of all.---You can connect with Jonathan on Twitter at: @JonathanBCrabb ---P.S.: If you have a brand, and you want to learn exactly how to transform it into a game-changer in your industry, then Legendary Brands Academy was made with you in mind. No more wishing things could be different -- no more theorizing without action -- no more saying "that's for other brands, but not for me." With Legendary Brands Academy, everything is designed for you to take action and see transformation in real time. You'll learn the step-by-step systems you can begin to implement today. As we near the end of my Learn How to Learn Deep Dive, I'm revealing powerful multipliers that can accelerate your learning journey. By now, you might already have a steady learning system in place. But even the best learning systems can begin to get stale or stagnate. Consider the strategies discussed in this episode as your "oil changes," or strategies to add on top of your foundational base. Your ceiling might be higher than you think. Add these multipliers on top of your foundational base, and watch yourself overcome setbacks, reach goals faster, and skyrocket to new heights.---P.S.: If you have a brand, and you want to learn exactly how to transform it into a game-changer in your industry, then Legendary Brands Academy was made with you in mind. Picking back up with the tenth installment of my Learn How to Learn Deep Dive, I'm revealing something counterintuitive: the key to learning isn't just about putting in more hours -- it's about mastering the rhythms of learning. The most successful learners don't just push harder -- they understand when to shift gears. It's about ebb and flow, imitating the rhythms we see in nature all around us. Drawing from my own journey learning Spanish, I demonstrate how small, consistent actions combined with strategic breaks can lead to remarkable growth. Most importantly, discover why being wrong feels exactly like being right -- and how this insight can transform your approach to personal growth. But by sharing with you all of the mistakes, triumphs, and crucial lessons I've learned along the way, I believe this series can provide a significant impact in your own learning journey. In this episode, I bust some common myths about learning and challenge the assumptions many of us picked up in school. Too often, both positive performance and negative performance in school can place limiting beliefs on our abilities to learn as adults. Leading research has shown just how neuroplastic our brains can be as adults -- but it's all dependent on the core beliefs we have around learning. I'll explain why a growth mindset is crucial and how learning is about so much more than academics. For some, that might mean a college degree; for others, perhaps not.If we only measure the value of college based on immediate value realization, then we likely ignore the long-term financial benefits that college provides, like the network.Stay ConnectedForbes newsletters: https://newsletters.editorial.forbes.comForbes on Facebook: http://fb.com/forbesForbes Video on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/forbesForbes Video on Instagram: http://instagram.com/forbesMore From Forbes: http://forbes.comForbes covers the intersection of entrepreneurship, wealth, technology, business and lifestyle with a focus on people and success.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Magda Giannikou is a musical and creative force! Gaining popularity with her band, Banda Magda, and touring with Snarky Puppy for years, her genius lies in her ability to create musical landscapes that paint pictures and bold universes her audiences always feel they can escape to. Oh and she sings in at least 5 languages! As a composer who dreamed of writing film scores, she listened to movie soundtracks at the age of 10 while other kids were listening to pop songs, and was always searching for music that created environments and ways to escape. Escape not from her life or family who inspired, adored and nurtured her talents, but a creative and imaginary escape where the worlds were endless in their imaginative potential. In our in depth podcast we take a peek behind her creative curtain to learn how she visualizes everything as a landscape in her mind, where words are instruments, melodies are colors, and the song is the final painting. How taking chances both in personal and professional life can lead to extraordinary experiences. That orchestral composition and improvisation are essentially creative cousins, and instead of idolizing and being inspired by heroic musical giants, which she of course does, that it is everyday people and life experiences that gives her the greatest inspirations to create art. Finally, we talk about her two experiences with Nu Deco, how we are a musical family now, and that finding Nu Deco was a dream come true in her quest to fulfill her aspirations of marrying composing for a full orchestra and creating new colorful worlds in songs that we all can enjoy, live in, and escape too.Nu Deco Ensemble & Magda Giannikou - Ase Me Na Bo

How horses learn and why it matters is an interesting topic that we will be talking about today. Horses are really interesting, because they are excellent at detecting patterns. They look for patterns when they are speaking and communicating with other horses, and if you observe horses in the field, you will see a lot of questions being asked and answered. When horses learn to communicate with humans, you will see a lot of the same patterns. There will be a lot of questions, answers, and repetition. Once we understand the patterns that our horses our recognizing, we can use these to teach our horses to learn faster.   Show Notes [02:57] Horses can learn how to learn. When a horse moves up to college level, and this means that they are really good at some advanced stuff. [05:31] Presto is a great example of a horse that did not learn how to learn early. [06:17] Justice had more language skills with other horses than Presto. [07:24] Presto was lacking in natural reactions, but he still picks up on patterns. [08:00] His interaction with Popcorn really helped him a lot. [08:43] Now I've noticed that Presto is actually looking for patterns. He starts to ask questions earlier, because he is seeing the patterns. [09:33] You may see a horse teach a human how to do something. [10:57] Not all college-level horses have been trained through the method of learning how to learn. Some have been trained to be reactive. These horses don't necessarily enjoy the learning process and will be more reactive or have negative anticipation. [11:26] Avoidance anticipation is the opposite of learning how to learn. [11:57] You want your horse to enjoy the learning process not be trained in a way that he wants to avoid learning. [12:40] There's a disconnect for horses to learn a lot of things in a short amount of time when they are worried about avoiding discomfort. [13:35] I'm very intentional with paying attention to the patterns that I use when I work with my horses. I'm consciously making decisions to recognize and know what patterns are happening and what the side effects of these patterns are. [14:01] Pay attention to any patterns you have with your horse. A simple one to pay attention to is feeding time.   Links and Resources: Introducing Orphan Foals to New Horses Orphan Foal: Pasture Turn Out With Adult Horses Episode 25: Is Your Horse Anticipating?

Many students arrive in college under-prepared for success, and professors have the responsibility - and opportunity - to help them gain skills to enable their success and find belonging in STEM. However, few professors are trained to help students develop these skills, so our guest, Sherri Messersmith, incorporates them into her series of developmental math textbooks! On this episode, Sherri shares her journey in math, from besting elementary school bullies on every math test, to high school math teacher, to college math professor, and now author of 15 college math textbooks. We discuss how staying true to your passions outside your main focus area - like writing, cooking, and travel, for Sherri - can make you better at your job, and even open the door to new opportunities - like textbook authorship! Sherri tells us what departments can do to engage with students in introductory courses and how to build students' confidence in difficult material. As Sherri says, life is not linear, so follow your passions, work hard, and be ready if fortune strikes with an amazing opportunity! Sherri is an experienced educator and speaker on the topic of enabling student success, and we are honored to have her on Double Shelix!! Also on this episode, we hear from a listener who was told by professors that they didn't belong in their grad program because they went to a small liberal arts college, not a big research institution - what?! We discuss how students take these kinds of comments from faculty really harshly, and how faculty can do better. Pre-teen years are a breeding ground for pimples, mood swings, eye-rolls, and social awkwardness. But that's not the only stuff these kids have to adjust to. There is a remarkable shift in academic demands that's far out and equally daunting. During the Middle School years, kids have to actually learn how to study for tests, independently write papers by elaborating on ideas, and manage their priorities to put together projects. The system assumes that somehow these kids will learn to swim just because we have thrown them into the water of self-management. If not properly handled, some projects can spiral out of control like a runaway train. Assignments involving project-based learning professes that children learn best when they experience the real-world problems and solve them on their own. In one of the elementary schools I had worked with, students were spotted to rush in with awkwardly large homemade robots as part of their 4th grade project. The teacher's conditions were such that each student had to design the robot without spending more than $5, assemble it without parents' help, put together an operating manual, and finally present everything in front of the class.  Project management involves the finer aspects of executive function skills and is rarely taught systematically. So did this project truly help inculcate the crucial skills for real world problem solving? My guest Lynn Meltzer, Ph.D., will discuss this very idea of ways to increase student's control over his or her learning.* This is Lynn's first podcast episode where she discusses Executive Function, managing long range goals, and learning the how of learning.About Lynn Meltzer, Ph.D.Lynn Meltzer, Ph.D. is the President and Director of Research at the Research Institute for Learning and Development (ResearchILD) and Director of Assessment at the Institute for Learning and Development (ILD) in Lexington, MA. She holds appointments as an Associate in Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Tufts University Department of Child Development. She is a fellow and Past-President of the prestigious International Academy for Research in Learning Disabilities. Her 35 years of assessment and clinical consultation with children, adolescents, and adults have emphasized the critical importance of the theory-to-practice cycle of knowledge. Her research, publications, and presentations have focused on understanding the complexity of learning and attention problems using a multi-dimensional model to bridge the gap between theory, research, and practice. Her extensive publications and professional presentations include articles, chapters, and books relating to the assessment and treatment of learning difficulties with an emphasis on the importance of metacognition, strategy use, cognitive flexibility, self-concept, and resilience.BooksThe Power of Peers in the Classroom: Enhancing Learning and Social SkillsPromoting Executive Function in the ClassroomWebsitesResearchILD.orgSMARTS-EF.orgSupport the show (https://mailchi.mp/7c848462e96f/full-prefrontal-sign-up)

Advanced Smartphone Forensics courses (https://www.sans.org/course/advanced-smartphone-mobile-device-forensics) . Her extensive experience has given her both the real-world experience and the foundation in training that it takes to excel in the mobile forensics field and share her knowledge with others. Throughout her career, Cindy has always looked for opportunities to help in meaningful ways. In one notable case, experts spent a year trying to unlock the phone of a 16-year-old girl who was killed in a tragic traffic accident. As the family prepared to spread the girl's ashes in a ceremony a year after her death, Cindy was given the victim's locked phone. She was able to unlock it, enabling the family to see their daughter's last photos. The family sent Cindy a thank you note that said: "We so appreciate this opportunity you've given us to hold onto a piece of our daughter's life we were sure was lost to us." This is just one example how digital forensics, and a good examiner, can have a tremendously positive impact in peoples lives. Cindy has also developed the " 2016 Women of Influence in IT Security by SC Magazine (https://www.scmagazine.com/women-of-influence/article/530276/5/) . She is also one of the nicest and most approachable people in the cyber security and digital forensic industry. In this interview we discuss starting digital forensics in law enforcement, how she started with mobile forensics in the early 2000's, moving from law enforcement to the private sector, the concerns she has with mobile phones, mobile malware, recruiting and retaining women in DF/IR, developing SANS mobile forensics courses, and much more. We chat with Peter Olson '97, Director and Creative Technologist at IDEO, the global design and innovation firm. “I don’t think critical thinking can be [automated]. I think as machine learning and things like those become more sophisticated, the thing that’s going to be important to have really good positions in the labor market in the next 20 to 30 years is not going to be knowing a specific skill, but knowing how to learn new skills and knowing how to think analytically and critically about things. And also creatively."

Amy Alkon's Advice Goddess Radio: "Nerd Your Way To A Better Life!" with the best brains in science.Dr. Barbara Oakley has written an incredibly helpful book on learning how to learn math and science. But, yoohoo, math-loathers, this book -- and this show -- are about much more than that. Both the book and tonight’s show are about techniques you can start employing immediately that will show you how to do your work and your creative work more efficiently and ultimately more successfully and satisfyingly. The proof that these techniques work? Dr. Oakley herself used these techniques to transform from a girl who flunked every math and science course in high school into a tenured professor of engineering. And she currently uses them to curb procrastination, to learn and retain difficult material better and faster, and to increase her creativity in problem-solving and writing. Dr. Oakley’s excellent book we’ll be discussing is A Mind For Numbers: How to excel at math and science (even if you flunked algebra). Join me and all my fascinating guests every Sunday, 7-8 p.m. PT, 10-11 p.m. ET, at blogtalkradio.com/amyalkon or subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher. My show's sponsor is Audible.com.
