Gregory Robinson Jr. is an author, educator, and mentor currently incarcerated at the Samson Correctional Institution in North Carolina. From behind prison walls, Gregory has built a movement of healing, accountability, and creativity, guiding other men to confront their pain, share their stories, and take off their masks.Through his Wisdom of Creation series and the Million Mask Movement, Gregory has turned confinement into community. He's teaching lessons on patience, mental health, and the power of choice, all from a place most people would never imagine transformation could begin. In this episode, Ashanti and Gregory explore how healing can happen anywhere, even behind bars, when men are given permission to be honest about what's really going on inside.Together, they dive into:How the Million Mask Movement reached inside a North Carolina prisonWhy Gregory gathered “eight brothers, gang leaders, ex-gang leaders, and religious leaders” to take off their masksWhat happens when men are finally allowed to cry, to feel, and to healThe story behind Gregory's children's book The Turtle and what it teaches about patience and progressHow creative expression became his form of restorative justiceThe daily realities of incarceration and how he uses storytelling to reclaim his narrativeHis message to young men about slowing down, listening to elders, and choosing a different pathThe truth about control, freedom, and finding peace in your own mindGregory challenges us to rethink a core truth:“Even when you have no control, when you can't eat what you want, or call home when you want, the one thing you do have control over is your mind and your narrative.”This conversation is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the belief that every man, no matter where he is, can become a catalyst for change.Timestamps:(0:00) Welcome and introduction with Ashanti (1:24) Gregory on growing up, miseducation, and missing guidance (3:43) Discovering the Million Mask Movement from inside prison (4:06) Bringing the mask to prison: “I sat down eight brothers…” (5:07) Creating mental health spaces behind the walls (6:40) The story of The Turtle: lessons on pacing, patience, and acceptance (8:16) “The turtle doesn't run from danger, it regroups and moves forward” (10:32) Writing books from prison: creativity as survival (12:39) Gregory's message to youth: “Be patient with life. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department recently released the initial draft of its 5-year strategic plan after months of gathering community input and data. About 100 clergy, religious leaders and community members gathered outside the state prison near Kokomo, Indiana. Governor Mike Braun has called for a special legislative session to consider redrawing the boundaries of Indiana's congressional districts. Want to go deeper on the stories you hear on WFYI News Now? Leadership in corrections doesn't come from a badge or title—it emerges from integrity, trust, and the willingness to shield your team during difficult times. Matthew Hyde, leadership strategist and author of "From Rookie to Rank," shares his remarkable journey from new correctional officer to CERT Commander without formal rank.Matthew's story begins with an unexpected path into corrections after brief experiences in college and the National Guard. Within six months of starting at a county jail, he was selected as a Field Training Officer, discovering his natural talent for developing others. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when Matthew discusses becoming the first non-ranking CERT Commander in his department's 25-year history. Rather than attempting to assert dominance over higher-ranking team members, he built trust by acknowledging their experience and seeking their input. "I established that when you walk into the CERT locker room, there is no rank—we're just positions," he explains, detailing how this approach eventually earned him respect across generational divides.Perhaps most valuable are Matthew's insights on leading through organizational challenges. He candidly shares his experience protecting his team during difficult administrations, emphasizing that when leadership falters from above, frontline supervisors must continue shielding their staff. "You still got to lead. Your people depend on you," he insists, offering practical wisdom for navigating politics while maintaining operational excellence.Whether you're aspiring to move up the ranks or seeking to improve your leadership effectiveness where you stand, this conversation delivers actionable strategies for building high-performance correctional teams. I saw a man once walk out of the Missouri State Penitentiary after three decades with a few dollars and no plan. I remember that moment—and this is why I am glad Missouri has set out to build something better. Come behind the scenes with us at the MCA/MPPOA fall conference for a candid tour of what's actually working: “soft handoffs” between institutions and field teams, mental health continuity that doesn't collapse on day one, and an immersive training academy built inside a retrofitted prison that turns rookies into capable, confident officers. We sit down with probation and parole pros and they show how ORAS‑driven case plans tackle real barriers—transportation, IDs, phones, and family support—before release. Their ICTS success stories are honest and hard‑earned: late‑night ER advocacy, field pickups when groups are missed, and quiet graduations that mean someone's eight months sober and off supervision for good. Then we head to Cameron, where the Academy for Excellence in Corrections blends daily defensive tactics, cohort rotations, and hands‑on modules in a dedicated training unit filled with authentic property and safe contraband. It's a modern cadence that builds muscle memory, policy fluency, and the kind of calm that keeps staff safer—and staying longer. We also open the notebook on today's threat landscape. A gang SME explains why hybrid gangs and flexible alliances now drive Missouri's dynamics, why word choice can keep a conversation alive, and how intel shared through the Midwest Gang Investigators Association makes patrol, probation, and custody safer. From motorcycle club rivalries to cross‑agency networking, the theme is collaboration—because corrections holds long‑term insights that street partners need, and training only sticks when it's tethered to the worksite. If you care about reentry that lasts, training that works, and safetySend us a text PepperBallFrom crowd control to cell extractions, the PepperBall system is the safe, non-lethal option.OMNIOMNI is cutting-edge software designed to track inmates and assets within your prison or jail. Federal employees across Indiana were furloughed or forced to work without pay starting yesterday because of a government shutdown. A new report shows 2025 is already the deadliest year on record for cyclists in Indianapolis. President Trump announced a one hundred percent tariff on pharmaceutical drugs manufactured outside of the United States, that took effect on the first of October. Detainees of Immigration and Customs Enforcement can now be held at Miami Correctional Facility, located between Indianapolis and South Bend. Joshua Ryle brings over two decades of corrections experience to this deeply insightful conversation about the hidden psychological patterns that shape corrections culture. From his early days at the Tennessee Department of Corrections to his current role as a training sergeant, Ryle has observed firsthand how the corrections environment creates behavioral patterns that affect officers both professionally and personally. At the heart of this episode is Ryle's new training program focused on workplace toxicity in corrections. He explains how officers spend their entire workday in a hypervigilant, fight-or-flight state that gradually transforms how they interact with everyone around them. This physiological reality leads to communication challenges, negative filtering, and self-sabotaging behaviors that follow officers home and contribute to concerning wellness statistics in the corrections profession. What makes Ryle's approach unique is his focus on behavioral science and practical solutions. Rather than simply identifying problems, he provides clear strategies for shifting from self-criticism to self-reflection, improving communication despite technological limitations, and creating a culture where colleagues support rather than undermine each other. Ryle's program has gained such recognition that it's now being implemented nationwide through ARC Tactical.Whether you work in corrections or are interested in workplace culture transformation, this episode provides valuable insights into how awareness and intentional behavior change can create healthier environments in even the most challenging professions. Send us a textWhat does it take to navigate the most dangerous prisons in America while maintaining both safety and humanity? Pete Bloodworth's extraordinary 35-year journey through corrections offers profound insights into this question. From his early days as a Marine Corps sniper to becoming one of corrections' most influential tactical innovators, Bloodworth's story reveals how military discipline transformed his approach to prison management. "When you actually study the science behind it," he explains about his pioneering work with less-lethal tools, "it's not to say other methods are bad, it's to strengthen the things that are their weaknesses." This pragmatic philosophy guided his development of protocols that revolutionized how officers respond to violent situations throughout the Federal Bureau of Prisons.Bloodworth's most compelling lessons come from his time at USP Marion, where staff still carried the emotional weight of the murders of three colleagues. There, he learned that leadership means more than tactical expertise—it requires taking responsibility for everyone's safety. "When you're handling it as an officer, you're in the now," he reflects. "When you become the supervisor, the responsibility of being the leader really starts hitting because it's your responsibility to make sure everybody goes home safe."Throughout our conversation, Bloodworth shares pivotal moments that shaped his understanding of corrections, from managing riots at FCI Phoenix to learning that security is just "one spoke on the wheel" of effective prison management. His later work in private corrections challenges common misconceptions, revealing how these facilities often employ veteran wardens with decades of experience across multiple systems.Whether you're a corrections professional, considering the field, or simply interested in understanding what happens behind prison walls, this episode offers rare insight into the complex world of modern corrections. Send us a textWhat makes a truly effective correctional leader? In this thought-provoking episode, Michael Cantrell draws from decades of experience to unpack the three essential qualities officers desperately want from their supervisors: knowledge, willingness, and courage.Correctional officers seek leaders who possess deep knowledge about policies, case law, and facility operations—creating a foundation of confidence and security. They need supervisors willing to step up during challenging situations and act as shields, protecting their teams from both unreasonable administrative demands and front-line dangers. Most critically, they require leaders with the courage to act decisively when faced with difficult circumstances.Cantrell explores how successful correctional leaders maintain clear visions that extend beyond themselves, establishing high expectations that motivate their teams toward excellence. He examines how a leader's treatment of others—from subordinates to superiors to inmates—reveals their character and shapes the entire facility's culture. The conversation delves into how effective leaders combat the pervasive discouragement that can infiltrate correctional work by highlighting purpose and meaning. Even when results aren't immediately visible, the work of maintaining public safety represents a vital contribution to society that leaders must continually reinforce.Perhaps surprisingly, Cantrell emphasizes the crucial role of appropriate humor in correctional leadership. The ability to find joy amidst challenges creates resilience against the inherent stresses of the profession and builds stronger connections among team members.Whether you're a seasoned correctional supervisor or aspiring to leadership, this episode provides valuable insights for building stronger, more effective teams in one of society's most challenging environments. Correctional services minister Pieter Groenewald wants inmates to grow food, make clothing, bake bread and work in factories to save taxpayers hundreds of millions of rand and promote rehabilitation. “All [prison] uniforms are produced by inmates. All the furniture in my offices — Cape Town and Pretoria — has been manufactured by inmates, so it's much cheaper,” Groenewald said. Though the furniture predates his appointment in 2024, Groenewald believes it reflects the sort of cost-cutting, skills-development approach he wants to entrench and expand throughout the prisons system.

Send us a textWhat if everything we thought we knew about training correctional officers was based on flawed assumptions? In this eye-opening conversation with Myles Cook, we explore how questioning basic training objectives can transform outcomes across corrections.Miles brings 15 years of diverse experience spanning corrections, patrol, narcotics, investigations, and academy instruction to tackle one of our profession's most fundamental challenges - training that actually works. With a master's degree, military service, and recognition as one of the International Association of Police Chiefs' 40 Under 40 Award recipients, Myles understands both theory and practical application. The conversation dives deep into how objective-based training has revolutionized physical fitness programs at his academy, resulting in remarkable 34-38% improvement rates across all fitness metrics. Rather than forcing everyone through identical workouts, their individualized approach ensures every recruit progresses at their optimal pace - creating not just fitter officers, but lifelong healthy habits. We explore why corrections training often gets stuck in outdated patterns, from focusing on policy over actual ethics to teaching shooting techniques that don't match real-world needs. Myles challenges listeners to look beyond their field for solutions, whether that's learning from athletic coaches for fitness training or competitive shooters for firearms instruction.Perhaps most valuable is Myles' framework for problem-solving: questioning assumptions, reframing problems, and finding innovative solutions by focusing on the true objective rather than apparent issues. His classic elevator example demonstrates how sometimes the real solution isn't making things faster, but making the experience better. For any corrections professional who's sat through mandatory training, wondering "what's the point?" - this episode offers a refreshing perspective and practical tools to transform your approach to teaching and learning. Send us a textWhat happens when a police officer's career evolves into revolutionizing corrections technology? Alisha Shoates-James takes us on her remarkable journey from patrolling Nashville streets to developing innovative tablet solutions that transform prison environments nationwide.Drawing from her seven years in law enforcement and extensive experience as a federal probation officer, Shoates-James intimately understands the complexities of our justice system. Her work creating pre-sentence investigation reports for federal judges provided deep insights into the human stories behind criminal cases. "The person is not their lowest moment," she emphasizes, a philosophy that guided her leadership of Tennessee's Probation and Parole Division, where she supervised 1,200 staff responsible for 78,000 individuals reentering society. Now at Aventive Technologies, Shoates-James pioneers secure tablet solutions that are deployed to 1,200,000 incarcerated individuals in America's prisons and jails. These devices deliver far more than entertainment—they provide critical education, rehabilitative programming, and family connection for incarcerated individuals while creating calmer, safer environments for staff. Correctional administrators report significant reductions in facility tension and behavioral incidents after implementing this technology. "When we introduce tablets into the environment, suddenly everyone has equal access to education," Shoates-James explains, describing how digital learning eliminates waiting lists for limited classroom seats.Subscribe to the Prison Officer Podcast for more insights into the evolving world of corrections and innovative approaches to rehabilitation and reentry.LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/alishasjamesAventiv https://aventiv.com/Securus Technologies https://securustech.net/ PepperBallFrom crowd control to cell extractions, the PepperBall system is the safe, non-lethal option.OMNIOMNI is cutting-edge software designed to track inmates and assets within your prison or jail. Correctional officers at the Federal Bureau of Prisons are using a different approach to urge congressional action. A new billboard campaign led by the American Federation of Government Employees is calling on Congress members to reject President Trump's effort to strip collective bargaining rights. Many bipartisan lawmakers have supported federal correctional officers for a long time. But the union said it's disappointed that lawmakers now appear to be turning their backs on the frontline federal workers. AFGE has rented out a number of billboards across the country urging Congress to reject Trump's executive order canceling union contracts, efforts that would cut benefits for federal correctional officers.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The Maplehurst Correctional Complex is known as Ontario's deadliest and most overcrowded jail. In recent weeks, it's come under increased scrutiny after video footage from 2023 was released showing inmates facing collective punishment from guards in an incident one judge called a "gross display of power." Is Maplehurst an aberration or a sign of system-wide challenges? What kind of action could and should the province take? To discuss, we're joined by Demar Kemar Hewitt Executive director and general counsel at the Black Legal Action Centre Lee Chapelle Former inmate and president of Canadian Prison Consulting Brendan Kennedy Reporter on the Toronto Star's investigative team and Andrea Monteiro Founder of Ethical Correctional Consulting Inc., former director of corrections in the Yukon, and former manager of the Independent Review of Ontario Corrections See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to your weekly UAS News Update. We have four stories for you this week.First, DJI teases the Mavic 4 Pro, and we have a release date!Second, a heartwarming story out of Michigan where a thermal drone played a key role in saving a 74-year-old woman.Third, we've got more DJI news with a leaked launch window for the Mini 5 Pro.And finally, a drone reportedly crashed while attempting to smuggle contraband into a South Carolina prison.First up this week, DJI is at it again, officially teasing the upcoming Mavic 4 Pro! They dropped a "Spin Your World" teaser and, in a bit of a surprise move for DJI, actually showed the drone itself in the teaser. This is probably because, let's be honest, the leaks have been coming for months now. The official launch is slated for May 13th, so mark your calendars!Next up, we have a fantastic real-world drones-for-good story coming out of Michigan! A 74-year-old woman who experienced a vehicle fire got lost in the woods without her phone last month. She sought shelter under a tree and endured 27 degrees temperatures, along with rain and winds, less than 450 feet from where her vehicle burned. It's unclear when searching began, but the woman was located alive, and too frozen to move, 3 days after going missing by a Mason County Sheriff's thermal drone. Great use of the drone to save a life! And in our third story this week, more news from the DJI rumor mill! It looks like the DJI Mini 5 Pro might be on the horizon, with a potential launch window now pointing towards September 2025. This information comes via trusted X leaker HakaSushi (hah-kah-SOO-shee), who apparently confirmed an earlier rumor from Jasper Ellens at DroneXL. So, while it's still a ways off, the anticipation is definitely building. The Mini series, as you know, has been incredibly popular. This is especially true for those of us who want a capable drone that stays under that 250-gram weight limit, avoiding a lot of registration hassles in many places. Speculation on improvements includes changes to the sensor size, enhanced obstacle avoidance, better wind resistance, or even longer flight times.Let us know in the comments what features YOU'D like to see in a Mini 5 Pro!And finally this week, your “Don't be that guy” segment. Reports indicate that a drone crashed while allegedly attempting to smuggle contraband, specifically methamphetamines, into a prison in South Carolina. Details about the specific type of drone or the quantity of contraband involved haven't been widely released yet, and the investigation is likely ongoing. Unfortunately, this isn't an isolated incident. We've covered stories like this before. Correctional facilities around the world are increasingly battling attempts to use drones to deliver drugs, cell phones, weapons, and other illegal items over prison walls. It's a serious security concern, and it highlights the 'cat and mouse' game being played between those trying to exploit the technology for criminal purposes and the authorities working to stop them. Don't be that guy, and for anyone watching that is thinking about doing this: These facilities have Drone detection systems. They will find you and they will catch you, so just don't. Alright, that's all for this week. We have the live Q and A on Monday and in post-flight on Monday in the premium community, so we'll see you then.

This significant development represents a deliberate effort to bring corrections expertise into an organization that has traditionally focused on law enforcement training. Through panel discussions and networking at the ILEETA conference, Cantrell helped identify critical training needs in corrections, including leadership and Correctional Training Officer (CTO) development, specifically designed for correctional environments and based on a new CTE (Coach - Train - Evaluate). At the heart of this episode is Cantrell's compelling discussion of his upcoming book on emotional intelligence and soft skills. He shares how his perspective transformed after hearing these capabilities described as "superpowers" rather than merely empathetic exercises. Through personal stories and practical examples, Cantrell breaks down the four components of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Cantrell challenges listeners to recognize that every correctional officer is a leader who can positively influence workplace culture. He emphasizes that communication significantly impacts perceptions of professionalism, whether through face-to-face interactions, emails, or other channels. Maine's transgender policies have cast the state into an unwelcome national spotlight, creating ripple effects that reach from schoolyards to prison cells and ultimately into living rooms of everyday families like mine. The federal government recently pulled $1.5 million in funding from Maine's Department of Corrections over its policy allowing transgender inmates to be housed according to their gender identity rather than biological sex.At the center of this controversy is a biological male who murdered his parents, now identifying as female and housed in a women's prison. Attorney General Pam Bondi made the federal government's position clear: "We will protect women in prison. We will protect women in sports. We will protect women throughout this country." Meanwhile, Maine's governor – ironically, the state's first female governor – continues implementing policies that fail to protect women and girls. What makes this policy debate personal for me is how it directly impacts my family. My brother, who has spent over ten years incarcerated and is nearing release, was set to receive four months in a halfway house to help him transition back to society. Due to these funding cuts, his prison sentence has been extended, and his rehabilitation program cut in half. The harsh reality: political decisions about gender identity are having real-world consequences for rehabilitation programs designed to help people rebuild their lives. The situation mirrors broader concerns throughout the state, including reports that dozens of Maine schools are hiding students' gender plans from parents. When policies prioritize ideology over practical considerations about safety, security, and family involvement, vulnerable populations often pay the price – whether they're women in prisons, girls in sports, or inmates seeking rehabilitation. I firmly support protecting women's safety and opportunities. If you found value in today's show please return the favor and leave a positive review and share it with someone important to you! https://www.sharethestrugglepodcast.com/reviews/new/Find all you need to know about the show https://www.sharethestrugglepodcast.com/Official Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100077724159859Join the 2% of Americans that Buy American and support American Together we can bring back American Manufacturing https://www.loudproudamerican.shop/Loud Proud American Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LoudproudamericanLoud Proud American Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/loud_proud_american/Loud Proud American TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@loud_proud_americanLoud Proud American YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmYQtOt6KVURuySWYQ2GWtwThank you for Supporting My American Dream!

In this episode, Dr. Gregory Adaka discusses his transition from emergency medicine to correctional health and the realities of providing medical care in a county jail.Dr. Adaka talks about what it's like to provide healthcare services in jails with host Dr. Bradley Block. They discuss how the system works, inmates' common health issues, and the ethical challenges of treating them.
