Listeners of Inside Design that love the show mention: lots of helpful,The Inside Design podcast is an absolute delight to listen to during my morning walks. The hosts, Joann and Kelly, provide common sense advice and suggestions that have given me the confidence to tackle my home renovation. They cover a wide range of design concepts, from complex ideas to simple tips and tricks. What sets this podcast apart is its fantastic sound quality, which is crystal clear and easy to hear even for someone like me who wears a cochlear implant.
One of the best aspects of The Inside Design podcast is the diverse range of topics covered in each episode. Joann and Kelly seamlessly navigate between discussing more complex design concepts and offering practical tips that anyone can implement in their home. They also frequently invite interesting guests who provide insightful information, inspiration, and practical design tips. This variety keeps each episode dynamic, energetic, and engaging.
Another highlight of this podcast is the hosts' willingness to share insider details of the interior design industry. As a new designer, I have found that many professionals in the field are tight-lipped about these details. However, Joann and Kelly break this mold by openly sharing their knowledge and experiences without pretension. Their delivery style is informative yet approachable, making it easy for listeners to learn and grow.
While The Inside Design podcast has many strengths, there are a few areas where it could improve. One suggestion would be to add episode numbers to make it easier for listeners to keep track of which episodes they have listened to. Without numbered episodes on their app, it can be challenging for some listeners to remember which episodes they have already heard.
In conclusion, The Inside Design podcast is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in design or decorating. Joann and Kelly's common sense advice and suggestions offer practical guidance that inspires confidence in tackling home renovations. The podcast covers everything from complex design concepts to simple tips and tricks with fantastic sound quality that makes it accessible even for those with hearing impairments. While there is room for improvement in terms of episode numbering, the overall value and enjoyment provided by this podcast make it a must-listen for design enthusiasts.

We had an amazing trip to the High Point Market and are excited to share the latest and greatest trends regarding lifestyle, colors, furnishings, wood finishes, fabric and lighting. There were some very distinct trends that we saw at this market more than previous ones, with quiet luxury, sustainable materials, escapism and customization. We'll share the products we saw, the educational and social events we attended and tell you about our Insider's Tour. Key Takeaways Vacation Inspired lifestyles - from coastal and mountain homes to speakeasy style spaces, the market had several designs that bring the feel of second homes, lake houses and retreats into every day life. Earth tone colors like cinnamon, apricot, smoky blue and sage green marked a shift away from neutral whites and a move towards a warmer palette. One big lighting trend is rechargeable options in picture lights and tabletop lamps making it easy to place them anywhere. Pleated and fabric lampshades are also back in style, a classic look we haven't seen in several years. CAROLINE HIPPLE BIOCaroline is an industry strategist, adventurous merchant, culture advocate, and fearless problem solver, who currently serves as the Chief Creative Officer of Hooker Furnishings. Hooker celebrates its 100th year anniversary this year as a leading supplier for furnishings for the total home. Prior to Hooker, Hipple served Norwalk Furniture for 16 years with business partner, Dixon Bartlett as consultants in its reinvention and as president culminating in paying the investors through the creation of an 100% ESOP in which the employees now own the company. Norwalk Furniture is a leading custom upholstery specialist. A confessed textile nerd, she and her partner travel the world in search of the best palette of designs and colors and resources that suit the moment, while surprising and delighting the customers they serve. With partner, Dixon Bartlett, she has headed up textile programs for four companies over several decades. Prior to Norwalk, Caroline and Dixon founded the industry consulting practice, HB2 Resources which helps clients grow their businesses through innovative start-ups and turn-arounds, making invisible strategies, well, visible. Creating and reinventing brands has been HB2's specialty and the projects have been wide reaching, including retail concepts in China, case-goods concepts in the US, as well as working with artists and celebrities like Jaclyn Smith, Isabelle de Borchgrave, Dana Gibson and Joanna Aranha at Bunakara to expand their home furnishings brands in the US. To accomplish the work of HB2, Caroline and Dixon drew upon their experience in reinvigorating the 72-store chain, Storehouse as its president and growing the 250-store retailer, This End Up as its EVP of Stores, Marketing and Merchandising. A passion of culture development and change management enabled the success of those ventures. Caroline, along with three executives from This End UP and Storehouse, documented the lessons they learned in culture building and shifting in their 2014 book, A Pathway to Profit (available at Amazon). The theme is empowering employees and putting people into the profit picture as a recipe for success. In addition to serving her workplace, Caroline is passionate about supporting the industry and women's role in it through board service past and present in numerous associations. We are huge fans of original art. It was a passion we both acquired later in life, partly due to a gallery owner, Donna Krueger of DK Gallery in Marietta, who helped us not be intimidated by art. We have become collectors of art – big and small in our own homes and advocate for original art in every project we design. As we've discussed on other shows, art is for everybody. You'll always remember where and why you bought that special piece that spoke to you in some meaningful way. Hanging original art is one of the single most important design tips we can give you for making a house a home. In this episode, we discuss some of our favorite artists and why we love their work so much! Design schools tend to focus on the creative process in interior design, but fall short when it comes to teaching the business side of the industry. Get at least 5 years of real world experience before you even THINK of going out on your own. Make mistakes on someone else's dime first. 2. People often ask us how we start a project and where the inspiration for a design comes from. When designing kitchens and baths, the inspiration often comes from a tile that we have fallen in love with. Today we are going to talk all things tile with our guest Ryan Fasan, who is a Technical Consultant and Ceramic Tile Specialist with Tile of Spain. We are in good hands with Ryan today and excited to talk to him about the latest in tile trends in preparation for the upcoming Coverings Expo held in Atlanta in April, which we will both attend. Plan ahead during the construction/renovation phase when using large format tiles to avoid unnecessary cutting of tiles. Did you know that beautiful textured and colorful patterns can be digitized on to tile? If you are overwhelmed with all the demands of social media as it pertains to your business, you are not alone! Besides running a full-service design business and hosting a full podcast schedule, Joann and I also do our own social media. Yes, we have pondered the notion of contracting this out, but we are too committed to our authenticity to embrace the idea of handing it over to a third party… so here we sit. TikTok is a platform that we have yet to fully jump on board with and that will probably actually change after today's episode. Our guest Lauren Moore is a content strategist who helps brands find their voice and grow their online presence for business results. Today Lauren is going to talk to us about why TikTok can help you grow your Instagram following and how her side-hustle book club went viral. Her work has notably increased the organic reach of clients, including major brands like MTV, Campbell's, and Subaru, contributing to more than 12 million combined follower growth. In collaboration with Phil Pallen Collective, she has strategically guided and grown more than 350 brands globally. Lauren is the founder of @BookHuddle, a vibrant community of 130k book enthusiasts that hosts reading retreats across North America. She believes anyone can achieve their dreams with hard work and an open mind. SHOW NOTES Trends come and go, and they influence us whether we realize it or not. In this episode, we talk about what's IN and what's OUT for 2024, how to balance new trends with updated classics, and how to know when it's time for a refresh. 1. SPONSOR We source a lot of Norwalk furniture in our projects for a number of reasons, one being that Norwalk builds heirloom quality furniture rather than landfill quality furniture. You know what that is also called? Sustainable! Doing their part to create healthy homes and environments is a core principle at Norwalk and we want to be a part of that. Another reason is that, unlike many other manufacturers, Norwalk has a particularly fabulous array of patterns and bright, fun fabrics to partner with performance fabrics, leathers, and textures like boucle and velvet. If you are in the Trade, you really must be sourcing Norwalk Furniture. Check out their website – norwalkfurniture.com and especially their 360-Design tool to help visualize pieces. They are now shipping in under 8 weeks! Key Take Aways: 1. Learn what classic items stand the test of time and what to spend your money on. 2. In this episode, we share inspiration and insights from our experience attending the Aspire Summit in Atlanta, a two-day event for entrepreneurs aimed at inspiring growth financially, professionally, and personally. We are always looking for ways to grow, and thought an event NOT focused on interior design, but rather on small business success, would be a breath of fresh air. Key Takeaways: 1. Take time AWAY from your business to work on your business. 2. Nobody cares more about your money than you. It's important to increase your financial IQ. 3. Visualize the next scene in your movie or chapter in your life. Allow yourself to daydream then vocalize that to the universe and ask the universe to send you signs and signals. We have HUGE gratitude to all of you for listening, watching, reviewing, and supporting our podcast this year. On our next podcast, we will have a very exciting announcement about great things to come on Inside Design with Kandrac & Kole in 2024. In the meantime, thank you Atlanta Market for sponsoring this episode. We wish you all a joyous and safe holiday with a reminder to count your blessings and pay it forward. The holidays are a hard time for many and to those people, we send big hugs and lots of love. See you in the New Year! KEY TAKEAWAYS: 2023 was filled with events, trips, unique installs, remodels, and a lot of learning. We cannot wait to see what 2024 will bring! Design events are some of our favorite ways to learn about up-and-coming design elements and network with fellow designers or business owners. Gatherings such as AmericasMart Atlanta and the High Point Insider's Tour not only offer invaluable networking prospects but also serve as a source of inspiration for fortifying our business. Being featured in Atlanta Magazine Home and earning design award nominations emphasizes the pivotal role of industry recognition. Being recognized in this way means so much to us. Try to balance work and travel, even brief breaks rejuvenate, sparking fresh insights and creativity. For example, drawing inspiration from diverse cultures and design hubs like Marrakesh can be transformative. We thank our audience's unwavering support, recognizing this support is a reminder of the resilience and shared positivity that can fuel continued success. Interior design is fascinating and exciting but can also bring a great deal of challenges that can lead to design paralysis or feeling stuck. We believe that having an open dialogue about our process can help our listeners make the best design decisions for themselves and their homes. With nearly 6 years of the podcast under our belts, we love it when our listeners ask us questions about this industry, how we as designers manage a busy schedule, what our favorite design elements are, designing on a budget, or how to use art to tie a design together. During this episode, we respond to questions from our listeners regarding topics from our clothing choices, to interviewing interior designers, plumbing, and more! We are happy to share our knowledge and experience with you today to help you avoid design paralysis. KEY TAKEAWAYS: With clear communication and expectations, a renovation or remodel can help alleviate the angst and stress of the process. Layering a sisal or jute rug underneath a Turkish or flatweave rug is a great way to add texture and interest. The best way to take the fear out of selecting a paint cover is to order large samples (they can be ordered through Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore) and put them in several areas of the space. It's best to view them at different times of day and night. We always head to High Point Market with the goal of making new relationships, seeing new products, meeting new vendors, and of course uncovering the emerging trends so that we can offer the best value to our clients! This year we decided to go a few days before the market officially opened so we could see even more throughout the market including the shops and showrooms that offer vintage and imported items from Europe. We led a successful Insiders Tour for designers new to High Point, opened new accounts, saw old friends, and noted the top trends which we will share today! KEY TAKEAWAYS: Watch for the color combinations of spice, terracotta, ochre, blush and slate blue to become prevalent in fabrics, art and finishes. A gallery of interesting art collections are a go to way to fill a large wall. Small textile prints are coming back but it's not Grandma style! We want to thank Esteem Media for partnering with the High Point Market Authority and inviting us to be Insider Tour Guides for the fourth time in this market. QUOTES: Funny Quote “I love sweatshirt season. Am I wearing a bra? Who knows. Am I wearing what I wore to bed under it? Maybe.” - Unknown Serious Quote In honor of our Jewish friends, clients and colleagues and all of the innocent people suffering in Israel, Gaza and Palestine, we pray for you and offer this quote: “When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be. I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief, I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and I am free.” - Wendell Berry
We wholeheartedly believe that a well-designed home not only reflects your personal style but also has a significant financial impact on its sale or rental value. That's why we wanted to share an insightful interview with Kathleen DeWitt, a renowned real estate agent from Charleston, who sheds light on the importance of good design in the local real estate market. In our conversation with Kathleen, she emphasizes how an aesthetically appealing home can truly make a difference when it comes to attracting potential buyers or tenants. She discusses the positive impacts of thoughtful design choices and how they can set your property apart from the competition. KEY TAKEAWAYS: A professionally designed home can help a property be more marketable, sell faster and you get your money two-fold in return. If something is very well done, a homeowner doesn't need to panic on how it will present itself. You don't have to do “vanilla” and worry that a future homeowner won't like it.
