Dartanyon Crockett was born with Leber's disease, a genetic condition causing progressive vision loss. After his mother died when he was just eight years old, Dartanyon endured a life of transiency and extreme poverty at the mercy of his father who struggled with substance abuse....Wrestling became an important outlet for Crockett throughout high school, and it was on the mats that the he met his best friend, Leroy Sutton. Sutton lost his legs in train accident at age eleven, and Crockett physically carried Sutton on his back through practices and competitions. In 2009, ESPN featured the extraordinary friendship between these two young men, inspiring thousands of viewers to lift them out of poverty....In 2010, Crockett was invited to try blind judo. Dartanyon Crockett was born in inner-city Cleveland, OH. Raised in a neighborhood filled with consistent violence, Dartanyon managed to maintain unconditional compassion toward others. In high school he crossed paths with a young man by the name of Leroy Sutton who shared this virtue. The power and beauty of their friendship managed to resonate across the world, thanks to the help of ESPN producer, Lisa Fenn. Who eventually became a part of their unlikely family. The airing of their 2009 documentary “Carry On” aided Dartanyon in pursuing a career as a U.S. Paralympian in the sport of judo. As a Paralympic athlete Dartanyon also began to build a career in inspirational speaking. Dartanyon's speaking career has led him to pursue knowledge and insight from the fields of social work, sociology, as well as education. While stepping in to his new career as a sociologist, serving as a Program Manager for YESS, Dartanyon has grown to become an expert in the area of recovery and resilience. Dartanyon addresses these concepts by generalizing knowledge from his lived international experience as an athlete, coach and speaker and his sociological and trauma informed research. Dartanyon Crockett, 28, calls himself an underdog. He says he had three strikes against him growing up in the inner-city of Cleveland, Ohio:  he was black, poor and physically limited. Having been severely near-sighted all his life, his mother died when he was 8, his father battled drug and alcohol addiction, and he grew up in a crime-ridden neighborhood. And because his father spent rent money on drugs, Dartanyon had to get a job when he was 13 to help pay for rent and buy groceries. In high school, Dartanyon and his best friend, Leroy Sutton, did well on the school's wrestling team. Their friendship was featured in an ESPN special called, “Carry On,” where it showed that each had his share of hard breaks. Dartanyon was legally blind and Leroy had lost both his legs from a train accident when he was a boy. The special also formed a friendship and bond that grew between ESPN's producer Lisa Fenn and the boys during the making of the segment, and shows how she became pivotal in both of the boys' lives. After the ESPN profile aired, it was Dartanyon who ended up being invited to train with the Judo team at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, despite never having any experience with the sport before. Dartanyon learned fast and did well. He eventually became a 2-time U.S. Paralympic bronze medalist. Today, Dartanyon is getting his degree in sociology and has become an inspirational speaker where he discusses the power of human investment. Former ESPN producer Lisa Fenn shares the story of how she formed an unlikely family with Dartanyon Crockett and Leroy Sutton, two high school senior wrestlers who she covered in 2009. The three permanently altered the courses of each other's lives. Leroy, who lost his legs in a childhood train accident, was often found on the back of the legally blind and homeless Dartanyon. Two remarkable individuals without the means or opportunities to succeed were in dire need of guidance. While there is nothing about Leroy, Dartanyon and Lisa that landed itself to an obvious bond, they forged community within each other. Lisa describes their ongoing journey together with Dartanyon, now a Paralympic bronze medalist, and Leroy, a college graduate.
