In this episode of the Journey of My Mother's Son podcast, I talk with fellow author, Mark Connor. Mark Connor is a Boxing Trainer and a Writer from Saint Paul, Minnesota. His first book, It's About Time (Millions of Copies Sold for Dad), is a saga wrapped around a package of poems, guarded by angels. Through an autobiography reading like a novel, he weaves together a story of love, family, and life with twenty poems running through it, sharing his growth in the Catholic faith, the influence of Irish heritage in his hometown's American identity, his exploration of Lakota tradition within the urban American Indian community, and his understanding of how truth found in different spiritual approaches can lead others—as it led himself back—to its fullness in the revelation of Christ. Mark Connor grew up in Saint Paul, calling himself the product of a “mixed marriage,” because his father—a combat wounded Vietnam veteran—grew up across the street from St. Columba parish in the Midway district, while his mother—a school teacher who later became a lawyer—came from the Holy Rosary parish “across the border, in South Minneapolis.” Born in Minneapolis and raised in Saint Paul, he began boxing at age 10, at the Mexican American Boxing Club on the city's East Side, the area of the city from which he formed his understanding of the world, anchoring his perception of direction to the family house and the rising of the sun outside his bedroom window. He had 102 amateur fights, made it to three national tournaments, and competed against some of the nation's top world class boxers. He became the Upper Midwest Golden Gloves lightweight champion at 17 and traveled to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO, two days after graduating high school, competing in the 1987 trials for the Pan American Games. Raised in the East Side parish of St. Pascal Baylon, where he attended first through sixth grade, Mark's father, a graduate of [Bishop] Cretin High School in Saint Paul, insisted Mark and his brother, David (13 days less than one year older than Mark), each attend its rival, St. Thomas Academy, in suburban Mendota Heights, from 7th through 12th grade, an all-boys Catholic Military high school. Having begun writing seriously at 16 and starting college at 18, Mark began an internal struggle between the academic path and boxing, spending one and a half years, respectively, at three schools—Regis University in Denver, Co., the University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul, and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis—earning his BA in English from the University of Minnesota. He was inactive as a boxer for only one and a half of those years, but never felt he was able to reach his potential while emersed in study, so upon graduation, he continued Boxing. Mark boxed competitively for two and half more years, then, deciding not to follow his gym mates—two of whom became world champions—in a professional boxing career, and believing it was already late in life to join the military, he went on an adventure, driving to Seattle, WA, securing a job on a salmon fishing boat headed to Southeast Alaska. A Year later, instead of returning to the commercial fisherman's life, he traveled with a friend to a Lakota Sundance ceremony on the Rosebud reservation, leading eventually to a job at Aín Dah Yung (Our Home) Center, a Native American Indian temporary emergency homeless shelter for youth aged 5 to 17, in Saint Paul. Within this setting, continuing to write freelance articles and periodically working on fiction and poetry, he eventually began a personal training service and worked with both competitive and recreational boxers, as well professionals and amateurs, wrote about boxing, and contemplated his faith. While recognizing that truth, goodness, and beauty are indeed present in the faith traditions of the indigenous community of friends welcoming him, as both a guest and a relative, he eventually reembraced the beauty, goodness, and truth of his Catholic faith and has since attempted to responsibly discern God's will for him, according to his legitimate talents and desires. Within that sincere effort, at the end of September, 2019, his father, who'd been patiently guiding him, died from a heat attack, just before America—and the world—appeared to enter a new era of chaos within which we are attempting to stabilize ourselves. Mark wrote the first lines of his book, It's About Time (Millions of Copies Sold for Dad) the day his father died, Monday, September 30, 2019. However, over the next year, as his country went through the impeachment and acquittal of a president, endured the trauma of an economic shutdown over a mysterious virus coming from a lab leak in China, and his beloved Twin Cities blew up in fiery riots, Mark worked when he could (the Boxing gyms and churches were closed due to Governor's orders), helped his mother who was diagnosed with a fatal heart disease, and daily mourned his father. He helped protect American Indian buildings with American Indian Movement (AIM) Patrol, and he eventually got part-time work as a bouncer, working bar security when restaurants were allowed to reopen. But he didn't do much until, as Christmas 2020 approached, he resolved that in the coming year he would do something with which his father would be happy. Organizing himself and setting his goal, he began writing the book his father—who'd nagged Mark about always insisting he was a writer yet never publishing a book—was never to see published in his earthly lifetime. Beginning the daily process of writing on February 9, 2021, Mark completed the first draft of It's About Time (Millions of Copies Sold for Dad) just before Easter on the Monday of Holy Week, March 29, 2021. In this book he tells the tale of his search for a meaningful life, appreciating the gift of God's love that life actually is, and how he sees now that the guardian angels were always guiding him and his family through it all. A contract with a humble little local publisher was severed over editorial differences on Christmas Eve, 2022, so Mark relied on his father's gift, his high school education, accepting help from his St. Thomas Academy contacts, specifically his literary advisor, Dan Flynn (Author of Famous Minnesotans: Past and Present) and legal advisor Kelly Rowe, and Mark's classmate, Tony Zirnhelt, and the book won the 2024 Irish Network Minnesota Bloomsday Literary Award and was published, through Connemara Patch Press, on Father's Day, June 16. Unfortunately, Mark's mother, who'd read the manuscript, never saw it in print, having collapsed in his arms and died October 22, 2023. Yet Mark continues on in hopeful and confident prayer that she—Mrs. Nanette Jane Connor—is watching over him, as she promised she would, next to his father—Robert J. Connor—while gazing perpetually into the Beatific Vision of the face of God. To find out more about Mark, you can check out his website at https://boxersandwritersmagazine.com/.
Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate This week we continue our Faith in Sports Series with Olympic and World Champion Wrestler Kyle Snyder. In this episode, Kyle shares his incredible journey of wrestling and faith. At a young age Kyle wanted to be an Olympic Champion. Wrestling was everything. Kyle shares how his wrestling career shaped his understanding of God. "Through wrestling I found out who God was and who Jesus is." Kyle is a 2016 Olympic Gold Medal winning wrestler. He is the youngest Olympic gold medalist and youngest World Champion in American wrestling history. He was a 3-time NCAA National Champion at Ohio State with a career record of 75-5 and ended his college career as the first and only wrestler to win the NCAA, World and Olympic championships as a collegiate athlete. After moving to the Olympic Training Center as a senior in High School, Kyle started going to Bible studies at the request of coaches and continued attending them as a freshman at Ohio State. Despite his desire to grow in his faith, his identity was still wrapped up in his wrestling accomplishments. A heart breaking loss in the NCAA Finals as a freshman sent Kyle into a state of depression and ultimately led to him surrendering it all to Jesus. This decision changed Kyle's life, allowing him to embrace his God-given abilities fully. Throughout this conversation, Kyle emphasizes the importance of being anchored in God's Word and how his commitment to studying the Bible and finding mentorship continues to strengthen his faith. Kyle concludes by highlighting that our ultimate purpose in life is to know God, grow in His character, serve Him, and teach others about Him. This invigorating winter activity offers a plethora of benefits for triathletes and fitness enthusiasts alike. The Benefits Snowshoe running is a powerhouse workout that combines cardio, strength, and endurance. The added resistance of trudging through the snow increases the intensity of your runs, making it a phenomenal cardiovascular exercise that boosts your aerobic capacity. The uneven terrain challenges your stabilizer muscles, enhancing strength and coordination. Plus, it's a low-impact activity that reduces the risk of injuries typically associated with running on harder surfaces. Snowshoe running also works your core and legs harder than traditional running, promoting muscular and tendon development while improving overall athletic performance. Essential Gear Getting started with snowshoe running requires some specialized equipment, but don't worry—it's straightforward. Here's what you'll need: Snowshoes: Opt for running-specific snowshoes which are lighter and more streamlined than their hiking counterparts. Brands like Atlas and MSR offer excellent options. Running Shoes: Wear your regular trail running shoes, paired with gaiters to keep the snow out. Apparel: Dress in moisture-wicking, breathable layers to stay warm and dry. Don't forget gloves and a hat to protect against the cold. Poles (Optional): Some runners prefer using poles for added stability, especially on uneven or steep terrain. How to Get Started Starting your snowshoe running journey is easier than you might think. Follow these steps to hit the snow-covered trails with confidence: Find a Trail: Look for local parks or dedicated snowshoe trails. Many ski resorts also offer groomed trails perfect for beginners. Warm-Up: Just like any workout, start with a dynamic warm-up to prepare your muscles and prevent injuries. Pace Yourself: Snowshoe running is more challenging than regular running, so begin with shorter distances to build your endurance. Focus on Form: Keep a shorter stride and lift your knees higher to navigate through the snow effectively. Use your arms to maintain balance. Stay Hydrated: Cold weather can be deceiving; you still need to stay hydrated, so bring water and hydrate regularly. 5 Best Trails to Check Out in Colorado according to All Trails: #5. Nymph Lake Trail: Head out on this 5.0-mile out-and-back trail near Estes Park, Colorado. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 2 h 34 min to complete. And now, finally, the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Taupo finishing up what has got to be the busiest year of PRO triathlon racing in recent history. With a world title, and the last chance to grab valuable (literally) IRONMAN Pro Series points on the line, the PRO women's start list is stellar. So as some of the world's fastest female triathletes line up for one last dance before the year is out, who are the top contenders for the win? For the last time in 2024, it's time to dust off my crystal ball and attempt to bring you my pre-race predictions. There are a number of names on the 62-strong PRO women's start list who could certainly contend for the podium at the 2024 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. And with the race coming so late in the year, and happening almost on the other side of the world for a large number of the athletes. If there was ever a race where ‘anything could happen' this is probably it. It's been a hotly-debated topic ever since the rotation with Nice was announced and it seems all options are now open for the IMWC. The future location and format of the IRONMAN World Championship would appear to be more up in the air than ever judging by the latest development from the M-Dot brand. Rumours have been swirling around for much of the second part of this year as to whether the current rotation between the spiritual home of Kona and Nice will see out its four-year cycle. The IMWC had always been held in Hawaii, with the men and women racing on the same day. That was until 2022 when they were each given their own day in Kona, with the pro women racing on the Thursday that year and the men on the Saturday. From a pro racing perspective the hugely important benefit of that was that the women had their own day of racing and all the coverage that entailed. However at that point it proved too much for the islanders, with the then mayor saying: “We learned that more than one race day during IRONMAN week is too many for the community to manage.” But with a steadfast commitment now in place for separate race days for men and women, IRONMAN decided a dual location system was the next best solution – so for 2023 they announced that the women would race in Kona and the men in Nice around a month before, which would then rotate for the next four years through to 2026. We're only halfway through that process and it's far to say it continues to split opinion more than virtually any other topic in triathlon – with huge implications for age-groupers and pros alike. It's a burning issue for Scott DeRue, who this year took over from long-term incumbent Andrew Messick as IRONMAN's CEO and inherited the rotation format. Another potentially significant recent change is a new mayor in Hawaii – so could two days in Kona now be back on the table? ‘Listening and learning' Judging by a survey that IRONMAN have sent out to sections of the media (and plenty of others by the sounds of it, including the all-important athletes) it would appear that all options are again up for discussion. The email introduction to the survey we received read as follows: “Respected Members of the Media – Two years ago, we split the IRONMAN World Championship, spanning both Kona and Nice, and we are incredibly proud of all that our athletes have achieved in both of these historic and beautiful locations. Email/Survey Two years ago, we split the IRONMAN World Championship, spanning both Kona and Nice, and we are incredibly proud of all that our athletes have achieved in both of these historic and beautiful locations. During these two years, we have sought and received feedback from diverse stakeholders to help us better understand the important role of the IRONMAN World Championship within our community. One thing is clear – the IRONMAN World Championship is the pinnacle of our sport, a celebration of human achievement, and a testament to the passion and commitment of our IRONMAN community. As we look to the long-term future of the IRONMAN World Championship, we are committed to listening to and learning from our community. In this spirit, we would like your input as a valued member of our IRONMAN `ohana. Your feedback will form part of the ongoing inputs we will continue to collect as we envision the long-term future of the IRONMAN World Championship. There is a high level of anticipation at the U.S. Biathlon Team training camp in Vuokatti, Finland, with both the IBU World Cup and IBU Cup series about to begin. Coming off a season of promising results followed by eight months of an innovative preparation period, now it's go-time! Heartbeat headed to the Vuokatti camp this week to catch up with U.S. Biathlon High Performance Director Lowell Bailey to recap the past and outline the plan for the coming season. The BMW IBU World Cup opens Saturday, Nov. 30 in Kontiolahti, Finland, with the IBU Cup getting underway Thursday, Nov. 28 at Idre Fjäll, Sweden.Bailey, a world champion, is now entering his seventh season since retiring in 2018. Since then, he's led high-performance efforts for the next generation of biathletes. “The more time I spend in this role, the more I realize the commonalities between what you do as an athlete and what you do as a sport director,” he said. “As an athlete, you're just trying to figure out ‘how I get better, how I find that half a percent improvement? Where is it going to be? Can I shoot a little bit faster? Can I ski a little bit faster? Can I ski a little bit smarter?' You're constantly trying to find those little nuggets. My role right now is not that much different.”It's always fun to look back at milestone results. Last season's men's relay results, career-best finishes for Deedra Irwin and Campbell Wright, and an emergence of new future stars coming onto the scene form the foundation. The preparation period since last April was highlighted by a spring on-snow camp in Bend, Ore., European high-altitude camps at Lenzerheide and Livigno, an increasingly valuable October camp in Soldier Hollow, and now the final tune-up in Vuokatti.Bailey is also quick to point at partnerships established with the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, USOPC, and a valuable physiological testing program with Montana State University that provides some of the best physical feedback for athletes and coaches ever.Conditions in Vuokatti have been snowy and dark, with only a few hours of daylight each day. But the culture and training facilities have attracted more teams each year.“Finland has a great culture and heritage of cross country skiing, so their venues are just top-notch, world-class venues,” said Bailey. “Because of that, you see a lot of the big teams from Central Europe making the trip up here to train.”Listen in now to episode four of Heartbeat as Lowell Bailey sets the stage for the season ahead. And watch for another Vuokatti update with men's team star Jake Brown coming soon.

Spit, Grit, and a Whole Lot of Tears Peter Eberhardt grew up in the far mountains of Northern California. He was always on a bike as a young kid, and at age 12 started racing BMX at his small hometown track. When Peter was 16, someone made a comment that no one from his home track would earn a national ranking and that spurred Peter to set out and put his hometown track on the map. By the time he was 19 (2015), he had achieved multiple district and state championships. However due to not having the national caliber tracks to train on and other resources, Peter struggled to make any headway on the national circuit. At 18,Peter spent every dollar to move himself down to San Diego so that he had the ability to train at the Olympic Training Center and not only on national caliber tracks, but Olympic level tracks. With the cost of living on the rise and not being able to efficiently train due to having to work so hard to make ends meet, Peter decided that he needed to buy a house to get his living costs under control. Peter drove uber for 6 months to buy his first condo at age 21. By the time Peter was 24, he finally earned a national ranking. Early on in 2020 at age 25, Peter had a lightbulb moment with his neighbors moving out, that he realized the power of real estate, and dove all in to learning about different ways of investing. About the same time, he finally accepted that he would never become who he was striving for in BMX racing, and hung up the bike for the time being to focus on other things. Late in 2021, with money saved from uber driving and taking out a HELOC on his condo, Peter purchased a central California 4plex which he then moved into for 8months to gut and renovate all 4 units mostly by himself. After that asset was fully repositioned and stabilized, Peter shifted his mind set around partnering, hired a few mentors and coaches, and is now fully invested in the multifamily space looking for his next deal. "To go out on top — there are so few athletes that can say that, and that really wasn't my plan! I just wanted to know when it would be over so that I could put everything that I had into each throw." Kara Winger had long planned for 2022 to be her final javelin season. And what a final season it was! The four-time Olympian capped off her 18-year international career by winning her first global medal (silver, at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, OR), and becoming the first U.S. woman to medal in the javelin at a world championships event. She set a new American record. She took the win at the Wanda Diamond League final. And, after 12 years, she finally broke her own personal record. In this conversation, Kara reflects on her career and on what it means to go out on top. She talks about the support she has felt in the track and field community, and about when she made the decision to retire. She talks about being chosen to be the Team USA flag bearer at last summer's Tokyo Olympic Games, and talks about the struggles she's faced with injuries (two ACL tears and a labrum tear in her left shoulder) and setbacks. Now, the Tracksmith-sponsored athlete will begin the next chapter of her career as the senior director for Parity, an organization dedicated to closing the gender pay gap in sports.
