Fresh off of leading Arizona State to its first NCAA team title in program history, Bob Bowman announced he would be leaving to head up the swim and dive program at Texas. A number of athletes left Arizona State following this announcement, either to follow Bob Bowman to Austin or pursue their swimming at other programs. One athlete who had trained under Bowman and was expected to follow him (from the outside) was freshman Ilya Kharun. The Canadian national had seen vast improvement under Bowman in just one year, capping his season with an NCAA title in the 200 fly. However, having built a life and community in Tempe already, Kharun opted to stay and train under newly named head coach and ASU alum Herbie Behm. It seemed to work for the rising sophomore, as he qualified for his first Canadian Olympic team and left Paris with 2 bronze medals in the 100 and 200 fly. In this podcast, Kharun discusses his decision to stay at ASU, what training with coach Behm has been like, and how he managed his event load in Paris and wound up on the podium twice.

So, let's talk about what happens when an elite athlete faces one of the most challenging situations imaginable—competing while battling COVID. In this episode of Real Physician Reacts, we dive into the incredible story of Noah Lyles, the gold medalist in the 100 meters for the USA and the bronze medalist in the 200 meters. What makes this story even more remarkable is that Noah achieved this while battling COVID. This revelation sparked a lot of discussions online, with people divided over whether he should have competed or not. For those of you new to this channel, I'm Dr. Berry Pierre, and today, we're going to explore the impact of COVID on athletic performance, particularly in a high-stakes environment like the Olympics. We'll discuss how Noah Lyles managed to compete, why the Olympics have changed their approach to COVID, and what this means for athletes going forward. We'll also address the broader implications of treating COVID like the flu—an approach that has raised many questions and concerns. So, if you're curious about how a top-tier athlete like Noah Lyles handles such a severe illness in the middle of the biggest competition of his life, stay tuned. This episode will give you a deeper understanding of the intersection between sports and health, especially in the context of a pandemic that continues to evolve. So, join me as we dissect this situation and what it tells us about resilience, health protocols, and the spirit of competition. Key Takeaways: COVID in Sports: The Olympics have shifted to treating COVID similarly to the flu, allowing athletes to decide whether to compete if they test positive. Noah Lyles' Challenge: Despite battling COVID and having a history of asthma, Noah Lyles managed to win a bronze medal, showcasing his resilience and determination. Health and Performance: COVID significantly impacts athletic performance, particularly through its inflammatory effects on the lungs, which are crucial for a sprinter. Future Implications: The relaxed approach to COVID in sports raises important questions about public health and the responsibilities of athletes and organizers. Quotes: "The vaccine is wildly successful. Anyone who argues in the year 2024 about whether the vaccine and booster is ineffective or was wrong or not going to take, just don't pay them any mind. They're just not making any factual sense and there's no numbers to back it up." – Dr. Berry Pierre "Especially if you've been following me long enough, we've had a lot of discussions where I said, 'Hey, we are going to need to get to the point where we talk about COVID, and I was praying that we got to this point where we would talk about COVID like we would talk about the flu." – Dr. Berry Pierre "This is during a time where I would expect COVID to cause respiratory issues. So, I'm not necessarily sure what prompted them to even test him in the beginning. I'm not sure if he said that yet, but I can just say from a clinical perspective, him having a history of asthma and then getting COVID and having to be a distance runner, he probably noticed some things." – Dr. Berry Pierre "My mask-wearing is so that I don't give you COVID, but I can understand, especially over there, where if you just look on TV, there's not a lot of people wearing masks at the Olympics. It wouldn't shock me at all that people may find it weird because we've gotten to the point, especially in the year 2024, that people are just kind of comfortable with not wearing masks." – Dr. Berry Pierre

In 10 minutes. This was pretty crazy, back then. Zepto was written off as an ambitious, overhyped startup run by two founders who had barely outgrown their teenage – by competitors and experts alike. In 2024, Zepto has now raised $1.2 billion in venture capital, with a valuation on $3.6 billion. Everyone was wrong about this little startup, which seems to have achieved something that retail brands only dream to: changing consumer habits. 10-minute delivery is now the norm – so much so that the likes of the good old retail giants Dmart and Reliance Retail are scratching their heads. Even Flipkart and Amazon are scuttling about, trying to crack the hyperlocal delivery space. Who would've thought Zepto would be the company to set the cat among the pigeons? It's not random, though. Zepto has tapped into specific advantages – categories, space, speed. And it certainly has timing to thank. All of these aspects have come together serendipitously for Zepto, but the real question is: does it pose a real threat to India's largest retail brands? And if it does, what will they do to stop Zepto? In this episode of Two by Two, hosts Rohin Dharmakumar, CEO of The Ken and Praveen Gopal Krishnan (PGK), COO of The Ken speak with guests Seetharaman G and Arvind Singhal to break down how exactly Zepto managed to surprise everyone, and what this means for the e-commerce space, going forward.About the guests:Arvind Singhal is the founder of Technopak Advisors, a 30 year old management consulting firm best known for its insights on retail and consumer goods. Arvind is an absolute expert on all things retail, with 30 years of hands-on experience advising the most prominent retail companies in India and abroad.Seetharaman G is The Ken's deputy editor and lead writer on all things retail, FMCG and e-commerce. Dr Hannah Macdougall just got a new running leg. Apparently, it's fast. Which is good. Hannah is an elite athlete, dual Paralympian and Bronze Medalist, Inclusion Advocate, and has completed a PhD in Well-Being. Apart from being a world-class swimmer, cyclist and triathlete, she's also an educator, high-performance expert and great story-teller. She's also a little inappropriate (my favourite part). For Shea, his journey with Soccer goes much deeper than the sport. Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at six years old, Hammond was told Soccer might not be in the cards. Hammond, however, had other ideas. He joins me on the MWP Podcast to detail his journey to CP US Men's National Soccer Team, where he is a two-time Bronze Medalist. He also describes his foundation - CP Soccer, in which Hammond has changed the lives of children who play Soccer with CP. This story is well worth listening to. If learning what it's like to watch your team win an Olympic gold medal from the sidelines isn't enough, and if learning what it's like to grow up in a family beset with poverty and addiction before reaching Olympic level competition isn't enough, and if learning what it's like after four more years to win an Olympic medal isn't enough, I'd say the best part of our conversation comes after all that. Then we talk about bringing out the best in others as a coach. How do you find out how to coach each person, athlete, executive, or otherwise? How to you lead a team to give to their potential? How do you keep everyone motivated? How do you keep yourself motivated? We both deeply appreciate each other's experience. You'll hear us trying to learn from each other. I want to learn how to shift sustainability, which everyone gives lip service to, from trying to avoid losing to winning by having fun, giving everything we've got, learning our deepest values, and acting on them.
