Laura Reed was at her wit's end. She was sitting at the dining room table. A young mother. A father not around. A mouth to feed. Then she had and "awakening." Here what happened next on this episode of Life's New Normal Podcast. Laura relocated from Johannesburg to North Carolina while she was still a child, but her family carried their culture and traditions (as well as their love for writing) with them wherever they went. At nine years old she saw her first poem published in print, and at fourteen, she picked up her first guitar and set her poems to music. The rest of the story is not history, but how her greatness as an artist is born from struggle. This is a powerful episode. You will not need a kleenex. Well, maybe you will, but not because of her story, but because you will cry from what you should have accomplished in life if you just pressed through your struggle. When you have fraud committed against you by a trusted employee, you learn how to stay afloat. In times like these adversity becomes the greatest teacher. Susan Frew has been through a lot. It is her resilience and fighting spirit which is a great attraction to anyone who meets her. Since I have known her, she has been through a tremendous fraud committed against her company. She has endured a surgery that might have ended her ability to speak. And, she has managed to purchase another company! What took the cake for me was in the midst of all this turmoil she still found it necessary to go to Washington DC and fight for her industry....the plumbing industry. The only reason I know this is because 2000 miles away from our homes in Colorado, we bumped into each other in one of our nation's capital cafeterias. You are going to be blown away by this woman's grit and tenacity, as well as her gentle spirit. Susan Frew always fights back. Susan is the author of Puffer Fish Effect. John Register is a catalyst. Corinne Hancock is a woman who is not comfortable unless she is leading people through the most chaotic times in life. Hear her journey from high school missions to causing an inspirational impact around the world. Do not let her small frame and blond hair fool you. She is a fierce warrior who gets it. "People have great intentions to help people. But you had better ask how to help before going to an environment with what you believe are the answers," says Corinne. I caught up with her (as she was on a layover in the United States before heading back out to Uganda) where she is working with a brilliant Ugandan Doctor who has stood up a hospital. Oh, yea, and then she has the Curiosity Project whose mission is to drive social impact by providing health and entrepreneurial opportunities in communities where people have limited access to resources in order to positively impact global health through curiosity, connection and contribution. For the people by the people is where dignity lies. And, that is what Corinne strives for. She just does it in the most chaotic environments. About the host: John Register is a catalyst. Michael Baroni, the General Counsel for Palace Entertainment, is just a nice guy...for an attorney. Don't get me wrong he is a bear in the courtroom, but his litigation is usually done with a smile. I walked into Michael's office and saw a myriad of sports paraphernalia. But what impressed me more was his charitable work. It ranged from Patriots and Paws to the Child Abuse Prevention Center and from the Women's Transitional Living Center to the Orangewood Foundation. Still, he has a 26-year track record of helping to revolutionize companies by implementing comprehensive, operational excellence. His warm smile and genuine interest in the presentation I and my colleague gave on advancing the rights of people with disabilities was more than refreshing. Like you, keynote speaker and bestselling author Alvin Law has heard a lot of cliches about thinking positively. But are any of them true? Does thinking positively really guarantee success in life? Should we force ourselves to think positively, no matter what our situation? Will mantras and soundbites change how we view ourselves and the world? Or are we looking at it the wrong way? With over three decades of professional speaking and over five decades of experience living life without arms, Alvin’s view is radically different. His mission is to inspire others to be accountable, to stop accepting their own excuses, and to instead make choices. After hearing Alvin speak, people start asking themselves “What’s my excuse?” They are challenged by his message to find the strength we all have within ourselves to change and to discard the labels they have allowed to define their lives and create limitations. “The best thing that ever happened to me is being born without arms. It brought me to circumstances never thought possible.” – Alvin Law “You can’t hide from life. You’re going to have obstacles show up. I know how to teach people to get past theirs. After all, there’s no magic pill you can swallow – there’s just you. In a quick-fix society, we need long-term strategies. I didn’t just discover this stuff overnight.” – Alvin Law Get ready for a great conversation with Canadian Hall of Fame Speaker, Alvin Law. Jason O. Harris has skyrocketed on to the scene with lessons he learned as an Air Force Officer. It is not the fighter pilot mentality of being in the cockpit alone, knowing support is around you, but rather piloting a support aircraft where an intricate team must be engaged in a philosophy, approach, and methodology to create an environment and atmosphere of mutual trust, responsibility, and productivity for mission success. Jason calls this philosophy, "No Fail Trust." One delighted client of Jason called this approach “an actionable roadmap to turn your business into an industry leader.” We will touch a few of the 7 skill sets of the No Fail Trust Philosophy. "I am not a young pretty girl who needs advice on what to do after college. I am a Clemson grad and have a masters degree. I am a military veteran with over 12 years of service. I own two companies. I am an only child and caretaker of my parents. I have been through a lot. Not 23 years or 25 years....but 37. I am constantly humbled that I don't look like all the things I have been through." These words were written by Charlynda Scales, a dynamic motivational speaker, brand ambassador, Air Force Veteran, social media influencer, and the founder and CEO of Mutt’s Sauce, LLC, a company that makes “the sauce for every meal.” Mutt's Sauce was the Grand Prize Winner of Bob Evan's Farms' 2017 Heroes to CEOs Contest. You know I had to reach out to her after I saw that post on LinkedIn. She bore her soul. I saw through the words and knew there was a story behind it. Today, you have the opportunity to hear this amazing story with some great messages to apply in your life as well. The Clemson University graduate holds a degree in Aerospace Science and Business Management. She also holds an MBA in Strategic Leadership. She started the company Mutt’s Sauce, LLC while she was still serving on active duty in the military. Charlynda has been featured in Forbes.com, MadameNoire.com, CBS News, Black Enterprise Magazine, Military.com, Army.mil, and Air Force Association Magazine. In 2016, she was crowned 2nd runner up, Ms. Veteran America. Charlynda was also selected for the March 2018 cover of MilitarySpouse magazine.
Darryl Conway says he is lucky. But when you send out 30 letters to 30 NFL teams and happen to get a break, that is not luck. That is dogged determination. His insights into taking advantage of an opportunity is a resounding lesson for us all. Mr. Conway is the Senior Associate AD and Chief Health & Welfare Officer at the University of Michigan. His advice to young students is to ask questions, then ask questions from the answers, and ask more questions. This is one way Darryl Conway distinguishes himself among his peers in the AT profession. It is what moved him from watching Keoki Kamau speed tape at the Art Monk football camp to sitting with the athletic trainers of the NY Jets to writing the in-stadium emergency protocol for the NFL, all before he was 25 years old. His questions took him to work with the elite police force SWAT teams in Maryland and have him as a highly sought after leadership speaker. You do not want to miss this episode. Kim Conley is just plain scrappy. While every runner has a unique story, Kim's journey to the world of professional running does not resemble the path of many of her fellow competitors. Growing up in Santa Rosa, California Kim's track career began in 1998 when she joined the Santa Rosa Express Track Club. She went on to compete at UC Davis, but despite steady improvement over her years as an Aggie, she graduated in 2009 with only one national-level collegiate appearance to her name. Determined to improve, Kim emerged definitively on the professional running scene at the 2012 Olympic Trials in Eugene, OR. In one of the most dramatic races of the meet, Kim mounted a comeback effort over the final lap, culminating in a sprint down the home stretch to move from 5th place to a 3rd place. Kim's podium finish, combined with a race result that fell .21 seconds inside the Olympic A standard, solidified a qualifying spot on the US Olympic team. Kim's story is for any athlete who never thought they were talented enough. She is proof positive that hard work pays off! What is most the poisonous thought you have ever had? Strange question, huh? Have you ever thought about that? You should, because, your thoughts matter. I am not talking about negative self-talk. I am talking about the kind of thinking that is so nuanced and so sinister that we are not even aware it is there or what it is doing to us. I am convinced that the refusal to honor someone else’s success or accomplishments is a poison that subtly, yet very conspicuously thwarts everything we try to do. These are the words of Dr. Matthew Kutz, speaker, author, Fulbright Scholar, and Professor. Matt is passionate about helping others achieve high-level leadership and outstanding organizational performance. His teaching, research, and leadership development interests are in reaching the highest levels of corporate performance and facilitating all facets of leadership and change initiatives. He developed and designed the Contextual Intelligence Profile™ to assess the contextual intelligence of individuals and organizations. To date, Matt’s training programs and Contextual Intelligence Profile™ have been used by executives, managers, members, and staff at multinational and Fortune 500 companies, universities, professional associations, churches, governmental agencies, and NGO’s. Today, he unpacks for us the most toxic thoughts you can ever have is one that refuses to honor another person. The Arbinger Institute provides training, consulting, coaching, and implementation tools that move individuals, teams, and organizations from the default self-focus they call an inward mindset to the results focus of an outward mindset. My guest Jim Ferrell is one of the managing founders of the organization that is rapidly growing around the world. The Arbinger Institute was founded in 1979 by Dr. C. Terry Warner, the scholar who solved the central problem at the heart of the human sciences: the problem of self-deception. That work revealed two distinct mindsets from which people and organizations operate—a self-focused inward mindset and an others-inclusive outward mindset—and the path to sustainably changing mindset and results. Today, Jim unpacks for us our self-deceiving behaviors (going inward) and how to turn outward. What do you do if the very thing you were called to do in life were taken away? Today, I chat with guest Chantal Aston on how she was able to create her new normal after her life took a different direction. Her husband was killed in a tragic accident leaving her to live life as a single mom with a 5-year-old daughter. But despite it all, she survived and later thrived. Today, she appreciates life and challenges us to do the same. Chantal Aston began wowing audiences in the early 1990’s with her rich and smoky alto voice, performing regular club dates in the vibrant Queen St. West area, home to Toronto’s dynamic arts and music scene. Aston quickly made her way on to some of Toronto’s premier clubs, like the Top of the Senator (now Jazz Bistro) and has shared the stage with some of Canada’s most beloved jazz heavyweights such as the late Moe Koffman, Bernie Senensky, Archie Alleyne, Ed Bickert, Joe Sealy and many others. Deeply rooted in jazz and blues, Ms. Aston’s earliest musical influence comes from her mother June Harris, an accomplished pianist, vocalist and entertainer from Chicago. It would come as is no surprise that Aston would eventually find herself and her place in the world of music. How does one bounce back from being an Olympic track and field hopeful and Army Officer Candidate one day and becoming an amputee the next? John Register knows the answer to that question all too well because, well, this is John's story. "It is all about employing one's resilience," Register says. Despite John's devastating setback, he hurdled his adversity and succeeded over it. Within 23 months he competed in the 1996 Paralympic Games n Atlanta, GA (games for athletes with physical disabilities and visual impairment) as a swimmer. He saw athletes at the track and field venue running on artificial limbs and four years later he returned to his first love of track and field and competed in the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia at the 2000 Paralympic Games where John won the silver medal in the long jump and set the American record in the process. John is the first to say that overcoming any obstacle no matter how great or insignificant one thinks it is, begins with having a resilient mindset. But how do you get it? Where does it come from? And, can it be taught and learned so everyone can respond better when facing adversity? What do you do in that dark moment after an injury, or when you feel a sense of loss? Do you hate the world, or do you get back up and back into life? For my guest Chris Waddell, who was injured in a skiing accident in 1988 at the age of 20, he had a monumental moment lying there, realizing he no longer needed to ever feel intimidated by anybody if he could come back from “this.” He felt like he had a second chance, and was determined to get back into his regular life A.S.A.P so his injury wouldn’t get the best of him. Within two months, he was back in class. One year after his accident, Chris was back on the slopes, but this time he was using a mono-ski. After only 2 years of skiing, he was named to the U.S. Disabled Ski Team, and the next four winter Paralympic games, winning 12 medals in total and becoming the most decorated male skier in Paralympic history. Oh, and by the way, People Magazine voted him one of America's 50 Most Beautiful People. We talk about this and more on Life's New Normal Podcast.
