In today’s episode, we honor award-winning Davidson NC poet and novelist Anthony “Tony” Abbott (January 7, 1935 – October 3, 2020), 2020 Inductee into the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame, an organization which celebrates and promotes the state’s rich literary heritage by commemorating its leading authors and encouraging the continued flourishing of great literature. Tony talks about his writing life and reads poetry from three of his award-winning chapbooks published by Lorimer Press: “New and Selected Poems,” “If Words Could Save Us,” and “The Angel dialouges.” Of “The Angel Dialogues,” Joseph Bathanti, Poet Laureate of North Carolina 2012, says that “Abbott miters each poem into the next with the precision of a master carpenter, in language that moves seamlessly, often floating, from impressionism into a quirky vernacular narrative …” And Cathy Smith Bowers, Poet Laureate of North Carolina 2010-2012 says “this angel … is a double-tasking, sarcastic, Yeats-reading, quantum-leaping trickster … Tony starts the show reading a poem that is one of signature pieces: “The Girl in the Yellow Raincoat.” Engage with the show here: https://linktr.ee/CharlotteReadersPodcast Detailed show notes here: https://charlottereaderspodcast.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/charlottereaderspodcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charlottereaderspodcast/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/charlottereader Charlotte Readers Podcast is a proud member of the Authors on the Air Global Radio Network and the Queen City Podcast Network.
ABOUT THE EPISODERacial reconciliation and healing was not the work that Dr. Lucretia Berry originally picked. Her younger self envisioned a future well-entrenched in the black community: her college, her career, her church, and ever her future husband and family. But that is not the path God laid out. In episode 13 of Not My Story, Lucretia talks with Sarah about her experiences growing up within black America, moving to a predominantly white area, agreeing to partner with her pastor to transition their historically black church to a multiethnic congregation, and marrying a white man. In 2015, all these experiences converged when Lucretia founded Brownicity.MEET THE GUESTDr. Lucretia Berry is the founder of Brownicity - Many Hues, One Humanity, an agency dedicated to advocacy, education, and support for racial healing and antiracism. Welcome Flatiron Kitchen + Taphouse in Davidson, NC to the podcast! One of the principle owners, Chad Hollingsworth, joins us for an interview. We talk a little while about Chad's background, and how a forensic accountant found a path to becoming a restaurateur. Chad shares the inspiration behind naming the restaurant "Flatiron," and how a Tap Tower would become the centerpiece for an upscale community gathering place. Chad also owns Seafoods.com, a company that distributes premium seafood selections to fine dining establishments throughout North America and the Caribbean. Chad is in a unique position to see the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the restaurant industry nationwide, and he shares some insights in the interview. I first heard Dr. Berry as a guest on a show I was editing for one of my clients and, as someone at the beginning of their own antiracism journey, I connected with her message right away and knew I needed to have her on this podcast to help me talk topic of race and antiracism through the lens of a podcaster and entrepreneur. In part one of my conversation with Dr. Berry, she shared the difference between the terms “Black” and “African American”, why it’s important to capitalize “Black”, the difference between a debate, a discussion, and a dialogue, which one of those we should be having as people who communicate in such public ways, and more! If you haven’t listened to it yet, you can find it here! In part two of our conversation, why not acknowledging major events like a global pandemic or civil unrest does more harm for your business than good, how to transition back into your business and podcast after taking a break during to emotional and challenging situations, why you shouldn’t immediately run out and ask a POC to be a guest on your podcast in an effort to make it more diverse, and what you should do instead to make sure the diversity in your podcast guest list and your business is authentic.
