We end 2023 with a wonderful conversation with Dr. Carter Berry discussing her work at her organization, Brownicity and her work as an author. We discuss her recent work, "Teaching for Justice and Belonging: A Journey for Educators and Parents" and how it lays down the steps for the "how-to" of implementing such initiatives in ones classroom. It was amazing to hear how her efforts started in the community and through such grassroots actions to grow into something so needed it today's world of education. I really enjoyed this conversation and found myself feeling revived and renewed as I went back to listen again during the editing phase. I also want to share that we have a new host, Alina Kaye, joining us for this conversation and for many more in the future. Thank you for all of your support in 2023! When it comes to the topic of race and racial healing, many of us have one of two responses: hide away from the uncomfortable conversation or become overzealous and use our words to cut and hurt others. In today's episode, our special guest, Dr. Lucretia Carter Berry, shows us a new approach that is characterized by understanding, growth, and grace.    In today's conversation we talk about accepting God's call to dive into the deep (and at times terrifying) waters, taking the time to learn, and rising up to teach and educate our families as well as others in our lives.    RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE brownicity.com Teaching for Justice and Belonging: A Journey for Educators and Parents Hues of You: An Activity Book for Learning About the Skin You Are In   ABOUT OUR SPECIAL GUEST Lucretia Carter Berry, PhD is an author, educator, speaker, and the founder of Brownicity, an agency committed to making important, scholarly-informed, antiracism education accessible, and the director of its learning community. This week Amy and Mike talk with author Dr Lucretia Berry about her new book Hues of You: An Activity Book for Learning About the Skin You Are In.  We live in a vibrant, colorful world, and though we enthusiastically teach our children the hues we find in nature and in the objects around us, we often find it difficult to teach them about the beauty of different skin tones.  Dr. Lucretia Berry, founder of Brownicity—a learning community dedicated to education and advocacy for antiracism—is often asked by parents, teachers, and caregivers how they can best approach this conversation with kids. In response, she created a fun and interactive tool that provides children and their adults a way to brave the shift from color blindness to color consciousness—HUES OF YOU: An Activity Book for Learning About the Skin You Are In (WaterBrook; on sale 1/4/22).  Filled with lively and bright full-color illustrations by Adia Carter, the book's drawing and writing activities are divided into four main sections—Hues of You, Hues of Your Family, Hues of Your Ancestors, and Hues of Your Friends. Each page gives kids space to explore their identity in a variety of social contexts and to celebrate the diversity of skin tones in the world around them.  Adults who have felt hesitant or unprepared to talk with the children in their lives about skin tone, race, and ethnicity will find that Hues of You is the perfect starting point. With this engaging resource, they can help lay the groundwork for a more positive, affirming, and inclusive world.

Racism is traumatizing no matter what, but when it manifests itself in your personal relationships, it is crushing.   Dr. Lucretia Berry, an anti-racist educator, author, scholar and mother to three little girls, joined me on the podcast earlier this week to discuss the need to talk to our kids about race before something bad happens, but we also found ourselves talking about how to redefine relationships after racism. It didn't quite fit with the focus of my first episode with Dr. Berry, but the wisdom she imparted was too good not to share with you.   It's a conversation I needed to hear, and I know it will help you as you navigate your relationships, boundaries and safety as well.   Diverse Book Challenge   National Reading Month is coming up in March, with National Read Across America Day traditionally celebrated on March 2.   For years, Read Across America Day has been celebrated on or near March 2, which is Dr. Seuss' birthday. The day has served not only as a time to encourage children to read, but as a day to honor and revere Dr. Seuss — which, because of his racist work and attitudes, is inappropriate.   The sentiment behind this celebration — fostering a love of reading in children and emphasizing resources available to help facilitate that — has always been and will always be important, but it is time to pivot in how we celebrate this holiday.   First Name Basis is here to help. We've compiled resources to help you and your kiddos celebrate reading with an emphasis on authors and books that encourage inclusivity and highlight diversity.    Trust me, this is a resource you're going to want!   Click here to get the resources sent straight to your inbox.   Bite-sized Black History  Bite-sized Black History is a program that empowers you to teach the little ones you love about brilliant Black Americans who have been largely overlooked by our history books. It's obvious that there is a need to talk about race with our kiddos when big events are in the news. But if that's the only time we're talking to them about this, that means these conversations are always coming from a place of trauma instead of a place of preparation.   It's time to be proactive instead of just reactive, and Dr. Lucretia Berry is here to help us with that.   Dr. Berry is a scholar, mother to three little girls and anti-racist educator. She recently joined me for a conversation to discuss how we as parents and teachers can be talking to kids about race and anti-racism long before something bad hits the news.   It is seriously an honor to have Dr. Berry on the podcast sharing her wisdom with us. She earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Iowa State University and her BA from South Carolina State University and is the founder of Brownicity (pronounced like “ethnicity”), an organization that works to foster racial healing and anti-racist education through courses for children and adults. In our second episode of the Delete + Reset series, we talk about race, racism, and your role in racial reconciliation as Dr. Lucretia Berry, founder of Brownicity, joins the show.  How exactly is “race” defined? What is racism? Who has white privilege? Dr. Berry defines these terms and helps us delete mindsets that are unhealthy and holding back our country (and our relationships!) like the “bootstrap mentality” and staying quiet so we don’t offend people. She also shares three practical ways to talk to your kids about race in a non-awkward way. I love how Dr. Berry talked about how we don’t live in a vacuum so what we do impacts our collective and how silence aligns with complicity because lies don’t mind being loud, obnoxious, and wrong.  If you want to know how to talk about race with your kids and friends, how to replace antiquated mindsets with God’s truth, and how to make our country a better place to live, and you’re ready for a conversation about race that’s handled with grace and kindness, listen in. Key Quotes  “Race is not biological. It’s policies and practices put in place to hold people in particular categories in relation to power.” - Dr. Lucretia Berry “Race isn’t a topic we learn about; we just live the consequences of it.” - Dr. Lucretia Berry “It does take miracles to intersect and disrupt the system.” - Dr. Lucretia Berry “We all collectively impact each other. We don’t live in a vacuum.” - Dr. Lucretia Berry “If you have the opportunity to contribute and cultivate and create a neighborhood that resonates love for everyone, wouldn’t you want to do that?” - Dr. Lucretia Berry “Our silence aligns with our complicity.” - Dr. Lucretia Berry “Lies don’t mind being loud.” - Dr. Lucretia Berry “We do have to be conduits of love and truth.” - Dr. Lucretia Berry “Silence allows the lies to be loud and obnoxious and wrong… and attractive.” - Dr. Lucretia Berry “Shed the lies. Lean into the truth.” - Dr. Lucretia Berry “When we talk about race, the Holy Spirit is always in the room.” - Jill E. How can we respond as grace-givers and Christ-followers when we experience unkind, hurtful, and shocking interactions with friends and family about the election? What do we do when people’s reactions to the election drive are exasperating and exhausting? In this episode, we will: Process what you’re feeling and experiencing Decide what to do next. (I share some do’s and don’ts, and not one idea is cliche. Promise!) So if you’re wondering how to give grace when you feel bullied, exhausted, and over it, listen in. Let’s process what you’re feeling right now Your feelings shouldn’t be in charge, but it’s not healthy for you if they are ignored, numbed, or judged.  You feel what you feel. This is an objective truth. No one can -- or should -- argue you out of whatever is going on in your heart right now. So what do we do with all these emotions? We do what is written in Psalm 42:4-6: we pour out our hearts to God. But what exactly does that look like in real life? It means -- in Jill Langauge -- to vent everything you’re experiencing to God Himself. Sharing every hurt, wound, and traumatic interaction with God is how we get healing and wholeness. Others are experiencing the same heartache and hurt you are Y’all, people are scared. Worried. Nervous. They believe they are 100% right and simultaneously powerless, so they explain and justify their rightness through words.  Deep down, people believe their anger can somehow protect their hearts from further attacks. The best defense is a good offense, right?  So as much grace as you want for yourself, remember the “other side” needs grace, compassion, and understanding just as much as we do. So what do we do? What are some next steps we can take in grace, love, and compassion?  Start by taking these six steps. “Do the hard work of love.” Put on the armor of God.  be careful about what assumptions you make. be confident in the object of your faith.  know what hills to die on. embrace the power of “and.” I recommend opting out of these three mindsets: Do not give up who you are or sacrifice your values to keep the peace. Do not be shocked when people act like people.  Do not believe that all Christians vote the same way. Here are 10 questions to think about as you conduct your own State of the Union: What about how another person voted unsettles me?  How can my unsettledness reveal the assumptions I’m making about that person, the future, and God’s sovereign plan?  Is it possible that because of where I live, my education, socioeconomic status, life experience, or race there are some dynamics and perspectives I can’t see? Am I willing to engage a person of a different political party with the desire to seek first to understand then be understood? Why or why not?   Do I view this time as “us vs. them”? Does my view align with God’s view? Does the content I consume perpetuate this view of “us vs. them”? Should I take a break from the news or social media if I begin to view others as adversaries?  Do I pray for “my side to win” or do I pray for God’s will to be done for all -- even those people who are nothing like me? How am I putting my hands and feet where my vote is? For example, if you voted for a candidate because she is pro-life, how much time are you spending volunteering or supporting a pro-life organization? Key Quotes If you’re experiencing weakness, heartache, hurt, anger, frustration, your Jesus felt it first, and He modeled for you how to respond to it.  We can rest that Jesus will make all things right in the end, and we can act now by doing what is best, next. Loving others right now looks like showing up for the people in your life who you don’t agree with politically. The more we attack others, the happier our enemy gets. Let’s make him really unhappy by being unified. Remember that none of us is the sum total of our political choices or voting record. Don’t buy into the lie that if you believe in this then you automatically hate or don’t care about that.  Do not be offended or surprised when people act like the wounded, frustrated, broken people they are. Be the first grace-giver that person who drives you crazy has ever experienced.   Mentioned in the Podcast The FCC requires that I tell you that I'm an Amazon Affiliate, which means I earn a bit of commission on each sale. ABOUT THE EPISODERacial reconciliation and healing was not the work that Dr. Lucretia Berry originally picked. Her younger self envisioned a future well-entrenched in the black community: her college, her career, her church, and ever her future husband and family. But that is not the path God laid out. In episode 13 of Not My Story, Lucretia talks with Sarah about her experiences growing up within black America, moving to a predominantly white area, agreeing to partner with her pastor to transition their historically black church to a multiethnic congregation, and marrying a white man. Many of us avoid and struggle with conversations about race or disabilities because it’s uncomfortable. When our children ask innocent questions about someone who is different than they are, it can make us feel tongue tied or embarrassed. Author Dorena Williamson has created some lovely children’s books to help parents respond and invite their children to join them on the journey of learning to love and speak worth over every person that God created. And I kept feeling frustrated thinking that’s not the solution to teach your children to be colorblind because that’s minimizing the beauty of God’s handiwork. And as Christians we should be the biggest proponents of celebrating the beauty of our racial diversity and not minimizing it or sort of washing it away and this colorblind land. She shares powerfully about how to engage with your children about racial and cultural differences and how we can model what it looks like to grow in the area of loving and accepting people who are different than us. As our children get older, I think that these are valuable conversations to have with them because the beauty of it is that it tells your children you are teachable and that you don’t get it right all the time and that you’re continuing to learn and grow. What we chat about: All about Dorena’s family and their multiracial church, Strong Tower Bible Church Her book ColorFull and the background behind why she wrote it The creativity of God and how he uses color in all that he created Looking for opportunities to share the beauty of racial differences with our children Language for parents to use to help teach children and avoid shaming Reinforcing the idea that “Different is not bad” and calling out the worth of people Why equipping kids early is important Modeling how we are all growing when it comes to loving and accepting people who are different than us Encouraging our children to ask questions even when they are uncomfortable Engaging with our kids about other cultures whether we can travel internationally or experience cultures in our own cities Connect with Dorena: Links Mentioned: ColorFull: Celebrating the Colors God Gave Us** ThoughtFull : Discovering the Unique Gifts in Each of Us** GraceFull : Growing a Heart that Cares for Our Neighbors** Other books/sites that Dorena recommends:  Brownicity.com site with helpful resources (created by a Godly woman Dr. Lucretia Berry) The Beatitudes by Carole Boston Weatherford The Other Side  by Jacqueline Woodson Beabridgebuilder.com A list of 28 picture books (aren’t about boycotts, buses or basketball)  –listed created by ScottWood

That’s why I felt it was so important to continue our conversation about racism on the podcast this week by inviting back two women who have profoundly impacted my life and taught me so much over the past year, Dr. Lucretia Berry of First Name Basis (http://firstnamebasis.org/) podcast.  I got to know these two brilliant mothers and anti-racism educators when they each came on the podcast last year (epsiode 113 (https://3in30podcast.com/captivate-podcast/113-teach-kids-about-racism/) ), and I’m so grateful that our friendships have deepened since that time and they have continued to teach me "off the air" about these super important topics that are dramatically impacting our country right now. Because we have a relationship of trust, I have been able to ask them my uncomfortable and uninformed questions, and having those heartfelt conversations has taught me so much and, really, changed my life. Today, I am asking them YOUR questions, which I’ve gathered from emails and messages I received after these two ladies came on the show. I grouped similar questions together, and then chose THREE that we will focus on today: 1) If children aren't "color blind," why don't my children ever describe people by the color of their skin? 2) I have a Black friend who says he/she has not experienced racism, so it’s hard for me to believe what I hear about racism in the news. Should I listen to my friend, or should I listen to the voices of the media? 3) Is ‘reverse racism’ real? If you are interested in seeing the video of the three of us talking together and hear our entire conversation, which was actually an hour long, I have posted that on YouTube (https://youtu.be/8MVRbb1OIoU) . As you listen to this episode, I hope that you will imagine that I am inviting you into my home to sit with me and be taught by two of my dear friends. That is truly how I think of all 3 in 30 episodes, but especially this one, and I’m so grateful to be part of a community where we genuinely listen, learn, and seek together. Major Takeaways 1) Children won’t discuss what they don’t have the language or the permission to describe. Give them the language by teaching them about melanin and describing the different hues of humanity, and try not to react uncomfortably to conversations about race with your children. 2) Listen to people's experiences and anecdotes, but also dig into the research and the history of systemic racism in this country, and remember that this is not just about overt discriminatory acts; it’s also woven into our country’s major institutions and policies and the way they are enforced. 3) "Racial prejudice" is real and can be harbored by anyone of any race, which is not okay. But the concept of “reverse racism” is not legitimate because racism is "prejudice plus the systemic power to protect or reinforce that prejudice."  Next Actions! Lucretia Berry is the founder of Brownicity, an online space that provides education and support for racial healing. She joins me to share how we all can take steps to advocate and bring restoration to our communities that have been fractured by the lies and injustice of racism.  As a mom of a multiethinic family, Lucretia shares how she and her husband addressed how they would teach their children about race. They didn’t want to teach their daughters to be “colorblind,” but instead wanted to talk about the many hues of humanity in a healthy way that cultivated life and beauty. When that conversation extended beyond their family, Brownicity was born. Since then, Lucretia has authored a study, created an online course and spoken at many events to spread this antiracism information in a way that is accessible for everyone.  It isn't about if you're racist or not, it's not even about that. You know, this is about how we've been molded and shaped. There are all these decisions that I've made in my life that are based on how I've been racialized and not necessarily my God-given identity. We all have this work to do, to detox from the ideology that we’ve been swimming in for the past 400 years or so. We've inherited it. But God is greater, so we have hope that we can create something new. How comfortable are you talking about race? Up until recently, I have NOT been comfortable talking about this topic because I recognized how uninformed and privileged I am–and that made me feel a little ashamed. Because this topic matters. SO MUCH. It’s really common when we realize we’re uneducated in certain areas to stay quiet–because if we open our mouths and start learning and asking questions, we might say something that is offensive or hurts someone. But staying quiet is not the answer: Answers come from seeking learning and asking for help. That is why I invited Dr. Lucretia Berry on the podcast to teach us. Dr Berry (http://brownicity.com/) is the founder of Brownicity— Many Hues, One Humanity, an agency dedicated to advocacy, education, and support for racial healing and anti racism. She has dedicated her life to developing and teaching anti racism curriculum to college and high school students, adults through ministry and online, and of course within her own home as the mother of three beautiful daughters. In this episode, Dr. Berry teaches us how to talk to our kids about skin tone and race through these three takeaways: How to Talk to Your Kids About Skin Tone with BrownicityReject the colorblind approach as a solution to racism. Normalize conversations about skin tone and race with your children so they can consciously, fluently, and confidently navigate our hyper-racialized society.  Invest in an anti race/ism education to gain understanding (e.g. books, classes, podcasts, teachers, not informal discussions). Raising white kids is to raise children in a vexed location, at the intersection of whiteness and childhood. White children experience the smog of toxic white supremacy and yet are often silenced and rendered incapable of navigating racial tensions and build meaningful relationships with peers of color. Today, I invite Jennifer Harvey, the author of Raising White Kids to help shed some light on why parents of white kids should care about raising race conscious children, and how to begin doing this work. We begin by talking about the struggles for white kids and teens, not being able to celebrate whiteness, and having to deal with negative associations of being white (racist). We talk through some examples of racial encounters white kids may have, how to help support them through their racial development into healthy racial identity. This was an insightful and moving episode from a white parent who is trying to figure this out and offering her profound wisdom with heart. What we chat about: All about Dorena’s family and their multiracial church, Strong Tower Bible Church Her book ColorFull and the background behind why she wrote it The creativity of God and how he uses color in all that he created Looking for opportunities to share the beauty of racial differences with our children Language for parents to use to help teach children and avoid shaming Reinforcing the idea that “Different is not bad” and calling out the worth of people Why equipping kids early is important Modeling how we are all growing when it comes to loving and accepting people who are different than us Encouraging our children to ask questions even when they are uncomfortable Engaging with our kids about other cultures whether we can travel internationally or experience cultures in our own cities Other books/sites that Dorena recommends:  Brownicity.com site with helpful resources (created by a Godly woman Dr. Lucretia Berry) The Beatitudes by Carole Boston Weatherford The Other Side  by Jacqueline Woodson Beabridgebuilder.com A list of 28 picture books (aren’t about boycotts, buses or basketball)  –listed created by ScottWood **Amazon affiliate link to help support the production of this podcast.

Lucretia authored, "What LIES Between Us: Fostering First Steps Towards Racial Healing Journal & Guide," designed specifically for ‘beginners’ to race conversations.
