"If you want your podcast and your business to work hand-in-hand, you have to start thinking about them as the same thing and not separate things." As you wrap up one year and plan your goals for the next one, don't forget about your podcast. I see far too many podcasters who aren't intentional with the content they're putting our and the products or services they're promoting on their show. In this episode, I'm explaining exactly how you can prep your podcast for new year so that you always know exactly what you're promoting and what your content should be centered around. Margy Feldhuhn is a podcast host and the co-owner and CEO of Interview Connections, the first and leading podcast booking agency. She and her business partner lead an in-house staff of over 25 full-time employees in their (now virtual) Rhode Island office, and have successfully scaled the agency to multiple 7 figures. Since 2013, Interview Connections has been booking successful entrepreneurs as guests on podcasts and providing them strategy and coaching to monetize their guest appearances. They currently represent over 250 business owners. In addition to being an entrepreneur, Margy is also an animal rescue advocate and personal development enthusiast. With her podcast, “We Get It, Your Dad Died,” Margy uses her own experience of losing her dad to suicide to transform the conversation around grief and show the joy that is possible on the other side of loss. Her show won First Prize in the Best Podcast category of the 2021 Rhode Island International Film Festival. In this episode, we chat about how their clients utilize podcast guest appearances for their businesses and podcasts, how Interview Connections was created, how many shows they have to pitch to get four podcast guests appearances per month for their clients, why they typically target “mid-range” shows for their clients rather than shows with massive audiences, the criteria they look for when finding podcasts to pitch, why don't ask podcasts hosts for their download numbers before deciding whether or not to pitch to them, and more. Over the past several years of helping coaches and consultants just like you with their podcast launches, I've noticed some common blocks, anxieties, and fears that come up frequently during that process. It's those fears that I want to discuss today to hopefully help you overcome if you're experiencing any of them yourself. The fears/anxieties mentioned in this episode: Feeling overwhelmed or intimidated by the process and/or technology to the point where it stops you from getting started Thinking everything needs to be absolutely perfect before you can officially launch the show (sometimes presents itself as making constant changes/tweaks or not being able to commit to certain decisions) Worrying that no one will even listen to the show Worrying that it will be a waste of time and/or money Being afraid of getting negative reviews or feedback Worrying that you won't be able to find enough guests to keep the show going To learn more about the resources mentioned in this episode, visit the show notes. Dr. Lindsay Padilla is an ex-community college professor who accidentally started a business while on the tenure track. Now, as the CEO and co-founder of the Hello Audio software, which takes your content and creates private audio feeds to make learning on the go much easier for your people, Lindsay challenges online industry norms of unfinished courses and unconsumed content with her product. All of Lindsay’s business ideas were born out of her tenure-track years teaching adults online at a community college, the ridiculous amount of learning she's done in all things education, and the years spent growing her course creation business online. In this episode, Lindsay shares what Hello Audio is, how it was created with course creators and podcasters in mind, how she personally uses Hello Audio in her own business, unique ways Hello Audio users are utilizing the platform for both business and personal reasons, how it can completely replace course platforms like Kajabi and Thinkific if you wanted it to, why it creates a much easier (and better) experience for your course participants, and more! I know the title and description for this special episode will likely seem a little clickbait-y but, unfortunately, they're not. Apple Podcasts announced some major changes this week and, unfortunately, they've done a terrible job at rolling them out. And, if you do what they advise you to do in order to take advantage of these new updates, your entire show could end being removed from their platform altogether thanks to some bugs with their new Podcasts Connect platform. And, that's not even the only issue some podcasters are experiencing. Take a listen to this quick episode before doing anything with the new Podcasts Connect platform or attempting to submit a new show to Apple Podcasts. There's also an additional mention of an announcement Facebook also made this week regarding podcasting. To learn more about the resources mentioned in this episode, visit the show notes. Shelby Fowler is a Facebook and Instagram ads expert, creator of Fempire Ads Academy, lover of reality tv, and the founder and CEO of Fempire Media. She started Fempire Media, an ads agency, in 2019 after freelancing as a digital marketer for years. She has grown the company to multiple six figures in the first 2 years and is passionate about serving clients, teaching ads, and encouraging her team. Every month, members get all the tools and support they need to scale their business with ads. Outside of business, Shelby is a mom of 2 girls, a crazy-awesome cook, lover of real housewives (and all things Bravo), and true crime fan. In this episode, she shares whether or not it’s realistic for someone to successfully run their own Facebook and Instagram ads if they don’t have the money to outsource it, when you should definitely start outsourcing your Facebook and Instagram ads, why she equates Facebook and Instagram ads for a podcast to a billboard, how much you realistically need to spend to promote your podcast with a Facebook or Instagram ad, what type of content should be used in a Facebook or Instagram ad for your podcast, her advice for running Facebook and Instagram story ads, the pros and cons of both sending potential listeners to a specific podcast app and a landing page for your podcast on your own website, why you absolutely should verify your domain inside the Facebook Business Manager before running any ads, why you need to be super critical of the resources you’re using to learn how to run your own Facebook and Instagram ads, and more! Today's my birthday! For the past two years, I've done an Ask Me Anything (AMA)-style episode where you were able to ask me any question you wanted and I answered it in the episode. Well, it's that time of the year again. In this AMA episode, I answer the following questions from listeners just like you: How do I grow my show? (Also phrased as how do I grow my audience, increase visibility, or increase my downloads) How do I record an interview with someone who's not there with me in person? Is it worth it to do transcriptions for each episode? What's a good editing program for beginners who can't outsource it yet? Do I really need show notes? Amy Dempster helps in understanding the healing power of the earth. What began as openly sharing her spiritual journey on her popular blog Following Hawks, has become a resource for others wanting to learn how to communicate with nature and share their own unique healing gifts with the earth. Together with the Spirits of the Land in the mountains of northwest Montana, she tends seven portals on the land where she lives, along with any grid keeping work she is assigned. She also leads the Earth Tenders Academy, an immersive online journey to help others re-establish their connection with their ancient ancestors, learn to communicate with the seen and unseen forces in their environment, and respectfully offer their healing energy to places in need. Amy and I worked together on the launch of her podcast, The Earth Keepers, and we’ve been working together ever since. In this episode, Amy shares why she decided to turn her blog into a podcast and what that process has looked like for her, why she feels the podcast has had more of an impact than her blog has, how the podcast leads people to join her Earth Tenders Academy, how her podcast has helped her become more comfortable being vocal in a field that faces a lot of stigmatism and mocking, how thinking she had to do interviews on her podcast prevented her from starting one sooner, and more. In this episode, we chat about the main struggle she sees new podcasters face after launching their podcast, what an editorial calendar is and why every podcaster should have one, how far in advance you should create your content, the affordable offering she has that can help you podcast like the pros do, and her advice for what to do when you start to feel burnt out and find yourself struggling to keep your podcast going. Whenever people find out I sold my first podcast, they always have the same questions. What?! How?! I didn't even know that was possible. Could I sell mine? How many downloads were you getting? How much did you sell it for? After it happened again recently with an upcoming guest, I figured it was time to put the information in a nice, neat little podcast episode so I don't have to keep explaining it. ;) Now, to be perfectly clear ... this is NOT an episode about how to sell a podcast. It's just the story of how I unexpectedly found myself selling mine back in 2018. To learn more about the resources mentioned in this episode, visit the show notes. "I don't edit my podcast because I want it to sound natural." Every time I see or hear a statement like the one above, I can't help but roll my eyes. And, no, it's not just because I'm a podcast editor who thinks people don't appreciate what they do. I mean, that's true ... but that's not really the point here. ;) As someone who's been in the podcasting industry for over five years, I can promise you that not editing your podcast is doing FAR more harm than good. I’m officially back from hiatus and we’re kicking things off with Clubhouse! If you’ve spent any time in any entrepreneurial or podcasting communities in the past month, I’m just going to assume you’ve heard or seen the word “Clubhouse” 18,001 times already. (Just in case you haven’t, it’s an audio-only app that lets people host chats or discussions about pretty much anything and it’s taken off like crazy.) In this quick episode, I share why you might have to wait to join the Clubhouse craze, whether I think it’s a beneficial new tool podcasters should be utilizing or just another shiny object to distract us, and an amazing free resource to help you get your bearings on the app and make the most out of it. When you first start the process of creating a launch a new podcast of your own, it can be learning a foreign language. There are a lot of terms thrown around that don't mean anything to you yet and it can make it difficult to ask for help when you need it (and to understand the advice when you get it). In this episode, I'm going some of the more common beginner podcasting terms. This isn't a comprehensive list by any means (although I explain in the episode where find one that is fairly comprehensive), but this will help you get started without feeling overwhelmed by technical jargon you don't need to know quite yet. I know it's tempting to want to launch right into the fun parts of starting a new podcast like creating the cover art or picking out your music, but you're putting the cart before the horse at that point. Before making ANY decisions for your podcast, you need to have a solid foundation to build off of. In this episode, I explain the three key parts to a great podcast foundation that will be the guide for every decision you make about your showing; during and after your launch. Over the past four and a half years, I’ve heard every excuse in the book for not starting a podcast. But, there are a few I’ve heard several times over and, unfortunately, they’re exactly valid reasons for not starting a podcast because they’re just not true. So, in this episode, I’m debunking the five following podcast myths: There are already too many podcasts/my niche is too crowded. I’m going to start a podcast and see immediate success. All I have to do is build it and they’ll come, right? I’m not a celebrity. There’s no way I’ll be able to stand out and get a large enough audience to make it worth it. It’s really expensive to start a podcast with all the fancy equipment I’ll need to make my show sound professional. I’m not tech-savvy and starting a podcast is way too complicated. Of all the social media platforms, I use Instagram to promote this podcast more than any other. So, I especially excited to record this episode with Andréa Jones and she did not disappoint. Andréa is fiercely committed to helping businesses and podcasters build profitable online communities through simple social media solutions. She's the host of the Savvy Social Podcast and the creator of the Savvy Social School; a digital platform designed to teach its 100+ members (predominantly small business owners) how to implement organic social media strategies. She has also been named one of Social Report's top marketers to follow. As you’ll hear in the episode, Andréa and I have known of each other for a while and have met in a few very quick passings at various podcasting conferences, but this was our first chance to have a real conversation and I was thrilled to find out she’s every bit as lovely and skilled as she appears online. In this episode, Andréa shares what types of content are performing well on Instagram at the moment, the main thing she sees people on Instagram get wrong that is hurting their engagement and the growth of their show, the one quick and easy action she recommends you take as soon as you finish this episode that will help you in the long-term to grow your podcast audience (and maybe even your client base), her thoughts sending an automatic DM after someone follows you, why you should be encouraging your audience to save your posts, and more! LinkedIn is a platform I know almost nothing about and that’s exactly why I have a guest on the show today! Chris Hines is host of the Personal Branding Playbook and a podcast expert for businesses and personal brands. Since 2015 he’s been hosting, producing and managing podcasts. Now, Chris owns the Elite Podcast Marketing Agency. Chris and I actually met at Podfest in March 2020 and were able to spend some time chatting over dinner after spoke speaking at the event. I was so impressed with Chris’ approaching to marketing and promoting a podcast (which is obviously not my strong suit) and knew I had to have him on the show at some point. When he recently about how LinkedIn is an underutilized and powerful platform for podcasters, it seemed like a perfect fit. In this episode, we talk about why podcasters should not be ignoring LinkedIn, his Three C’s Method for generating leads from LinkedIn, what you should and shouldn’t do in your LinkedIn profile, how often you should be posting on LinkedIn, what type of content you should be posting, how to build connections on LinkedIn, how to your podcast content to convert those connections into paying clients, and more! In the past week, I've had two different people specifically ask me about how they decide how much of their content to give away for free on their podcast. I'm not a business coach so I can't tell you what the ideal amount is, but I can tell you how I make that decision for this podcast and how it's worked out for me over the two years I've had this podcast. Special Note: I mention in this episode that my upcoming podcast launch group program will be launched in July. With everything going on, I've pushed the launch back until September. I am, however, taking on a few last 1:1 clients before my rates increase after the group program has launched. Click here if you would like to see about grabbing one of the spots. Dr. Lucretia Berry is the founder of Brownicity; an agency dedicated to advocacy, education, and support for racial healing and antiracism. She is a former college professor whose love for humanity led her to author What LIES Between Us: Fostering First Steps Towards Racial Healing, a journey guide designed specifically for ‘beginners.’ She is the Anti-race/ism Curriculum Specialist for Community School of Davidson (NC), a contributor for (In)courage.me, a TEDx speaker, and more. I first heard Dr. Berry as a guest on a show I was editing for one of my clients and, as someone at the beginning of their own antiracism journey, I connected with her message right away and knew I needed to have her on this podcast to help me talk topic of race and antiracism through the lens of a podcaster and entrepreneur. In part one of my conversation with Dr. Berry, she shared the difference between the terms “Black” and “African American”, why it’s important to capitalize “Black”, the difference between a debate, a discussion, and a dialogue, which one of those we should be having as people who communicate in such public ways, and more! If you haven’t listened to it yet, you can find it here! In part two of our conversation, why not acknowledging major events like a global pandemic or civil unrest does more harm for your business than good, how to transition back into your business and podcast after taking a break during to emotional and challenging situations, why you shouldn’t immediately run out and ask a POC to be a guest on your podcast in an effort to make it more diverse, and what you should do instead to make sure the diversity in your podcast guest list and your business is authentic. One of the reasons podcasting is such a powerful lead generation tool for a coaching or consulting business is because of the bond it allows you to build with your audience. Unfortunately, I've noticed that a lot podcasters aren't taking full advantage of this power and they actually end up doing things that can alienate their audience members instead. So, in this episode, I'm providing you with some incredibly quick and easy-to-implement tips for building a bond with your audience that will help you convert them from listeners to paying clients.
