Phileena Nikole (formerly Phileena Heurtz)  is our guest on this episode of the Tales of Recovery Podcast.  I am forever grateful for Phileena, who is also an author, teacher, spiritual director, retreat guide and trauma informed yoga instructor. She has been INSTRUMENTAL in my unraveling from religious beliefs and with the utmost compassion I have ever encountered.  I met her many many years ago when some dear friends of mine recommended her as a spiritual director.  I had read her first book and reached out for what turned out to be a year of incredible transformation and liberation of my heart.  As we chat about here on the podcast,  Phileena helped me move from the prison of religious belief systems to the REMEMBERING of who I am and coming into contact with my inner intuition, and a she calls it, "my Inner Knowing".  Phileena shares with us her own unraveling with religion, through contemplative practices and a somatic approach as she explains how the body has a way of alerting us when something is just not working out.   Our conversation includes talking about what it is to have a teaching/learning experience vs a lived reality and how listening to your body is key in this journey of Spirituality.  You can find Phileena on IG as @phileena and on her webpage www.phileena.com Phileena's discerning guidance has been featured by Center for Action and Contemplation's Conspire, Sojourner's Summit, Q Ideas, The Work of the People, Catalyst, Immerse, Darkwood Brew and more. She is also the author of Pilgrimage of a Soul, a provocative theological narrative set along the Camino de Santiago, and Mindful Silence, a vulnerable exploration of the Christian contemplative tradition.     She does live up in the mountains of New Mexico, so we had a tiny bit of technical issues but I edited it the best I could and I appreciate your patience with this because this recording is just TOO good to be true :)    Grab your cup of tea and listen in ~ May this podcast be helpful on your journey to your True Self.    With much Love,  Gris

Recognizing that apart from Christ we can do nothing, and acting on His clear call to raise up disciples; a generation of gospel fluent city influencers, we are bold in our proclamation of the Gospel and courageous in our efforts to seek the shalom and flourishing of our cities. Core Behaviors (We Will):  Pursue Bible Fluency. We will teach the Bible as the inerrant and infallible and eternal Word of God. We will walk with growing disciples as they become Gospel fluent followers of Jesus. We will identify, train and release evangelists in our community!  Pursue Bible Relevancy. We will challenge people to grow in the articulation of Biblical worldview as it relates to the current issues of the day. (Alpha, Q Ideas, Rooted.) Be Ready and Prepared. We are confident in the One we have in Jesus Christ and our hearts are settled in the reality that Jesus is in charge. We will take time to think through, write out and practice sharing our Gospel story so that we are prepared to respond when people ask us about our work. Share the Gospel: WE will seek out opportunities to share the Gospel and not wait for them to come to us. Believing that no one exists beyond the reach of the grace of Jesus Christ to transform lives, we will approach our interactions from a gospel perspective and will be intentional and patient in our relational pursuits.  Engage with Gentleness, Respect, and Clarity. Jesus models how believers are to engage in relationships with grace and truth. When you first became a believer, did you think you would eventually have enough knowledge that you would feel a great deal of certainty? I know I did. But our journey of faith doesn't work that way. We are always learning and growing, as we should be. When we reach a rigid certainty, it's likely we have halted our progress. Today's podcast episode is with Gabe Lyons, who is the host and founder of Q Conference. He believes we should hold the posture of staying curious, thinking well, and doing good. When Gabe started his ministry, he realized that many people were being given the answers instead of being prompted to think for themselves. He set out to help people stay curious. In this podcast, Gabe and I discuss the beauty that can come from exposing ourselves to a wide array of voices and taking the time to be thoughtful about the significant issues in our lives. Gabe Lyons is the co-author of Good Faith and unChristian, and author of The Next Christians. He founded Q, a learning community of Christian leaders who seek to engage thoughtfully in the current cultural moment. Gabe seeks to equip Christians to apply their faith in their daily life by openly discussing some of the most controversial issues we all face and applying a biblical framework to participate in restoring broken relationships and institutions. Mental health disorders are an issue for many of us, and it is often and sadly a journey filled with shame and pain. In this episode, I'm joined by Rebecca Lyons to talk about mental health and our journey of faith. Rebecca started wrestling with panic disorder when she moved to New York. After a year and a half of dealing with panic attacks, she cried out to the Lord, and at that moment, she was flooded with peace and didn't experience another panic attack for seven years. But, the journey did not end for her there. Anxiety still affects her from time to time. Therefore, she established spiritual rhythms to maintain health and renewal. Rebecca is here to remind us that we don't have to perform for God. We can go to God with our rawness, our desperation, our longing, and our despair. His hands are wide open for us. After our podcast last week on spiritual abuse with Dr. John Townsend, I thought it would be beneficial to have Rebecca's voice here to talk about the prevalence of mental illness in our midst and how it is that it affects our journey of faith. We discussed how we can really talk about it, how we walk with God, and how God equips us, heals us, and even transforms us to help others. Rebecca Lyons is an excellent national speaker. She is a bestselling author Rhythms of Renewal: Trading Stress and Anxiety for a Life of Peace and Purpose, You Are Free: Be Who You Already Are and Freefall to Fly: A Breathtaking Journey Toward a Life of Meaning. She is the co-founder of Q Ideas. Her work has been featured on The TODAY Show, Good morning America, CNN, Huffington Post, and more. More than any other generation, Millennials are some of the most misunderstood and misconstrued individuals within the context of human history, yes even as a new generation — Gen Z's — continue to rise to the forefront as society's new leaders. Gen Z's represent a beacon of hope as we slowly emerge from a history-altering pandemic. But millennials are being prematurely put on the backburner as the new “lost generation,” swept aside as lazy and at worst, nihilistic. But they have as much to offer to society and the work of the Kingdom of God than we've been led to believe. Grant Skeldon, Next Gen Director at Q Ideas, is an expert on his generation—the Millennial generation. In this episode of The Future Is Here podcast, Skeldon talks to our host Tommy Nixon about harnessing the power of Millennials, while also discussing what each generation needs to do to support the work of the Kingdom in reaching this next generation of leaders coming up.Support the show

How to Approach a Christian Worldview in Post Christian America with Gabe Lyons [Podcast]

License to Parent with Trace Embry

For the Christian parent pursuing a Christian worldview, it has traditionally been either the church, the Bible, the Holy Spirit, or a combination of all the above. And for centuries, at least in the western hemisphere, the Judeo-Christian ethic has proven to be the cornerstone of our personal freedoms, how our government determines justice, and how we raise our kids. But, in case you haven't noticed, these fundamental ideals are now being challenged at their root. The Christian faith you are teaching your kids is now becoming a stumbling block to their everyday affairs. So, we need to be preparing our kids how to live, love, and flourish in a post-Christian America. Gabe Lyons is the co-author of Good Faith (2016) and unChristian (2007). He is also the author of The Next Christians (2010), a manifesto for how Christians can faithfully lead in a changing culture. He is the founder of Q Ideas, a learning community where Christian leaders are equipped to engage our cultural moment. Their Q Conference annually convenes thousands of leaders from all industries, and Q Commons, their global event, simultaneously unites 140 cities and over 10,000 people on an October evening. Called "sophisticated and orthodox" by The New York Times, Q Ideas equips Christians to apply their faith to daily life by addressing some of the most difficult and controversial issues of our time. Gabe speaks to over 100,000 people each year on topics like equipping the next generation, cultural issues, and research related to the intersection of faith and public life. He lives in Nashville with his wife, Rebekah, and their three children. How the Christian Worldview is Being Devalued in America The turn of perspective away from traditional Judeo-Christian values has happened in a relatively short period of time. Though it's just my perspective, I happen to believe that Christians—certainly guilty of shooting ourselves in the foot in many ways—have largely been the scapegoat of a culture that has come so far off the rails that it almost needs a whipping boy, so-to-speak, on whom to cast judgement and blame. A culture that wants someone or something that takes the heat off the more legitimate reasons for our world being so screwed up. Because, though we can be a problem, we are far from being THE problem. We certainly have room—like any people group—to improve. But, let me ask you this, what other people group—religious or otherwise—is condemned, stereotyped, and bigoted-against so vehemently with virtually no public outrage? This is just one of the obstacles we need to keep in mind as we bring up our kids with a biblical worldview today. Gabe Lyons and I discuss how Christians should approach American culture as we cover the following topics: Why we should live according to a biblical worldview. The importance of saturating our culture with the Truth. What is “Q” and how it can help me address cultural issues. How to make an age old truth be relevant to a new time. What is missing from our families. The role church leaders should play. The role digital technology plays. Picture provided by: Aaron Burden
