My guest for this episode is Derek Ingram. Derek is the Head Coach for Golf Canadas National Men's amateur and Pro teams. Independent of that he is also the coach to Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith and many other elite players and a published author. Although Derek's job takes on the road the majority of the year his role within Golf Canada and his experience of the elite amateur game gives him a unique global perspective on the game of golf from all levels. For this episode we chat about helping club golfers improve and what are some of the stumbling blocks, we discuss winter climate challenges and indoor golf training. We chat about the grip and how its level of importance is not really reflected in the direction of online information… and lastly Derek suggests a few strategies that can help you with your on-course process, direct form his book “Sports Pysch for golf” In the coaching section we chat about Derek's influence to this point on technique and coaching, how he uses tech like 3D to help his understanding of how his players perform their best. We discuss the work he is currently doing with Corey and Taylor and some putting content, and lastly we chat about his current project, Tour Habits, which he co founded alongside Tristian Mullaly. I always enjoy chatting to experienced and educated coaches and sometimes you come across the trifecta of experienced, educated but still so hungry to learn and improve. Not only does Derek Ingram tick all those boxes with ease but he is also brings with it a sense of appreciation and joy which if we are all honest, this game can sometimes take from us.. Episode 3 features the legendary Canadian golf coach Derek Ingram, who has been at the helm of a variety of teams with the National team programs over the past 20 or so years. Derek is an extremely open and honest man who cares for his players and who is what you might term an “inside-out” coach – which is to say that he focuses on the inner game as an avenue to bring his players more success on the outer arenas of sport and competition. Derek was a fine player in his own right who turned to coaching to satisfy his own personal virtues of supporting and helping others, and the world of Canadian golf is all the better for this decision he made in the late 1990's. We are sure you'll enjoy listening to the insights and stories that Derek shares in this episode, but more than anything we are certain you will discover why he is so revered by his players and the many coaches around the country over which he has had tremendous influence. And while his humility and self-deprecating humour will keep him from ever mentioning this fact, the success of the Team Canada program over recent years is in large part due to the attitude and efforts of the “Dragon Coach”, Derek Ingram. Enjoy, and remember to share and engage so we can grow our community of golfers who play the game in its purest form.
The discussions in Episode 2 are a blend of two distinct but related influences. The centre-piece of this show is a portion of our interview time with legendary Canadian golf coach Derek Ingram - who aside from coaching National Teams in Canada for over twenty years is also one of the nicest and most authentic guys you'll ever meet. His resume as a coach is astoundingly strong, but he would certainly be the last person to let you know. Players from his National Team programs are reaching heights in the game heretofore unseen in Canadian golf history, and the positive results seem to evolve with each passing year. Derek's thoughts about his coaching and player development are at the centre of this podcast, around which hosts Carter and Jon engage in a spirited discussion about the merits and misrepresentations we see in the “new science” of mindfulness and its application in sport and skill development. The link between Derek Ingram and mindfulness is not too much of a stretch - Derek is an empathetic, considerate and “transformative” coach who helps his players become more task oriented and present, while mindfulness as a practice is really an extension of the values that Derek preaches in his coaching. Offering a broad spectrum of ideas that will surely stimulate discussions and reflections in our listeners, we encourage you to share your reactions to this episode with us and our community as much as you can. Thanks for engaging.
Derek Ingram never dreamed he would be a coach, but when he found himself coaching the people he was competing against he realized that perhaps coaching people in golf was best done when he was not also playing against them. The Head Coach of Golf Canada's Men's Team, Derek believes that a trusting relationship between the player and the coach is key. Without that connection it is impossible to make the technical changes required to get better. He loves people and has a unique way of dealing with them, he spends time getting to know his players and the players know that he genuinely cares about them. When asked to share advice with us he noted, “less social media and more time with people”, a testament to his approach, he walks the walk and talks the talk when it comes to building relationships first. Derek's journey to a national team head coach position involves junior golf at Sandy Hook, Manitoba, a science degree in chemistry and walk on try outs at ten different schools in the US (spoiler alert he got five offers). We hope you enjoy our conversation with the intriguing and engaging Derek Ingram.
Bryson DeChambeau sets a record for the lowest 72 hole score at a US Open held at Winged Foot, capturing his first major title by overpowering the golf course. The Head Coach of Golf Canada's Men's Amateur, Professional, and Olympic Golf Teams, Derek Ingram, also joins us to discuss his time being on the grounds at Winged Foot and working with his players, including Taylor Pendrith who finished in the top 25 and what his game plan was. Finally we touch on Derek's playing and teaching careers and how he got to where he is today (interview starting at 38:42).
