John Levy on Life After PENN, Ontario's Rise & theScore's Legacy

It had been a while since John Levy last spoke when he appeared last month at the NEXT.io Summit in New York. He had a few things to say about the departure of himself and sons Aubrey, Noah and Benjie from PENN Entertainment some 14 months ago, more than 2 ½ years after PENN acquired theScore in 2021. We've been giving it the old college try to get the elder Levy back on the podcast, and we finally succeeded this week as Ontario's open, legal sports betting and igaming industry recognizes its third anniversary. Our conversation included a trip down memory lane before single-event sports betting was given legal blessing by the federal government, and your humble host read a quote from Levy in a May 2021 Toronto Star column about legal online gaming coming to the true north, strong and free, Levy spoke about theScore's success in Ontario, both pre- and post-PENN ownership, the company's partnerships with the Toronto Blue Jays and Golf Canada, and some overall thoughts about the province's legal gaming market, advertising and marketing strategies, the ongoing efforts by the industry around responsible gaming and the challenges/opportunities ahead in Ontario, Alberta and beyond. He also (somewhat) answered our question about what's next. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

My guest for this episode is Derek Ingram. Derek is the Head Coach for Golf Canadas National Men's amateur and Pro teams. Independent of that he is also the coach to Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith and many other elite players and a published author. Although Derek's job takes on the road the majority of the year his role within Golf Canada and his experience of the elite amateur game gives him a unique global perspective on the game of golf from all levels.   For this episode we chat about helping club golfers improve and what are some of the stumbling blocks, we discuss winter climate challenges and indoor golf training. We chat about the grip and how its level of importance is not really reflected in the direction of online information… and lastly Derek suggests a few strategies that can help you with your on-course process, direct form his book “Sports Pysch for golf” In the coaching section we chat about Derek's influence to this point on technique and coaching, how he uses tech like 3D to help his understanding of how his players perform their best. We discuss the work he is currently doing with Corey and Taylor and some putting content, and lastly we chat about his current project, Tour Habits, which he co founded alongside Tristian Mullaly.  I always enjoy chatting to experienced and educated coaches and sometimes you come across the trifecta of experienced, educated but still so hungry to learn and improve. Not only does Derek Ingram tick all those boxes with ease but he is also brings with it a sense of appreciation and joy which if we are all honest, this game can sometimes take from us.. Support the show

On Jan. 29, 2019 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open's Dream Day on the famous 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale's Stadium Course, Amy Bockerstette, who has Down syndrome, demonstrated to the golfing world what a determined athlete with self-confidence and a positive attitude can achieve. While playing with PGA Tour players Gary Woodland and Matt Kuchar during the Tuesday practice round, Amy hit the par 3 tee shot 117 yards into a greenside bunker, splashed her sand shot to within 8 feet of the pin, and made her par putt in front of a roaring crowd. Colin met Steve Madden at The 2023 PGA Show in Orlando and after hearing his entrepreneurial story over a couple of pints of Guinness we had to invite him on the show to share his experiences with you. "Five years ago my ex-girlfriend's dad invited me for a round, so I played an 18 hole round at Mountainside golf course. The next day I went and played the par 3 course there which had the massive holes and I became addicted to golf that weekend. When I got back to Calgary, I played three or four rounds next week and then I joined a golf course for the remainder of the season. Once new golfers feel that awesome shot or they hit that really close approach, smash that driver or make a long putt, that addiction really hits you. I made a decision a few years ago that I wanted to create a lifestyle, or a job where I could golf and do my own thing tech-wise. I've had two apps now that revolve around golf and Swingtweaks is the second one."... Golf Canada reports: The game of golf accounts for an estimated $18.2B of Canada's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is up 14% from the $15.9B reported in 2014. At Golf Ontario, there on a mission to shape lives by leading, creating, and promoting positive golf experiences. The Golf Ontario (formerly the Golf Association of Ontario) as it is currently structured came into being in November of 2001, following the amalgamation of the Ontario Golf Association and the Ontario Ladies Golf Association. Prior to the amalgamation, the OGA and the OLGA had represented amateur golfers in Ontario for close to 80 years and had done an excellent job of building and promoting the game. At the time of the amalgamation only Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan had taken the step towards amalgamation. Since that time, all of the Provincial Golf Associations have amalgamated and in 2005 the Royal Canadian Golf Association and the Canadian Ladies Golf Association completed the process. In the early days of Golf Associations in Ontario, there were small associations, representing Private Clubs in the Toronto area and providing a service that was specific to golf championships. Over our history, the association has grown to the point where today our Club Members include Private Clubs, Semi-Private Clubs and Public Golf Clubs. The majority of our individual members are at the Private and Semi-Private Clubs, but the association also offers opportunities for individuals to join directly as members of a Public Player Program. At the present time, Golf Ontario represents over 450 Member Clubs and over 92,000 individuals making it one of the largest Amateur Golf Associations in the world. Nick Taylor is the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications for Golf Ontario. He joined me this week to discuss how the association is working to grow the game of Golf across the province of Ontario. For more information: https://www.gao.ca/ Follow: @TheGolfOntario

While it's in a large financial institution, it's a very entrepreneurial atmosphere with dozens of small businesses being run by a handful of people. We're responsible for wearing multiple hats in each of these businesses to market it, to grow it, to manage the finances. You're doing everything and you're working hard! The idea of "Hey, we want your ideas, bring them to the table" fosters that innovative entrepreneurial mindset. I'm using all the skills and experience that I've built up my entire life and career. "At the green grass level we recognize that we have to make a conscious effort to make others feel welcome. That was one of the things that I believe we missed in the 90s. We made a lot of hard golf courses, a lot of challenging facilities, but we didn't really create a safe place for people that were new to the game to come in feel welcome who didn't understanding etiquette or even where to begin. A lot of those things that cause people embarrassment we are able to address early on and doing that to create safe ways for them to learn the game, making them feel like they belong as they make their way from the putting green to the range and ultimately for just one hole or two holes at a time until they get comfortable. Give them ways to have success and feel welcome at the facility from the very beginning." Friend of the show Rich Katz - Founder of Katz Strategy - takes on the guest host duties to lead a fast-paced, informative, entertaining, practical and educational conversation with Mark Mattingly, Executive Vice President at Landscapes Golf Management. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/Eupi5Yj_.jpg "If you're going to get into the golf business, you need to love seeing other people get that spark in their eye and really have joy in experiencing this great game. And if you love to do that, you'll go the extra mile to provide that programming and on-boarding. All of these technology solutions have all been developed to help people better understand and fall in love with the game the way that I have. So that is what I think is most important. Show Notes and Chris Quotes "We believe that it's never been more important for golf professionals to have tools that save them time and help them deliver great experiences to golfers. That's where we come in to the picture. So that's really the growth part of it. Of the pandemic the question then becomes retention. How do you keep these folks engaged? That really comes down to what type of experience is the golf course delivering. You get folks out there for a league or for nine holes or a practice session. What brings the back, what's going to turn them into golfers for life? What's going to turn them into folks that are going to play say 10, 15, 20 or more rounds of golf a year because that's really the name of the game."
