Golf shafts bend, twist, droop, and deflect during the golf swing and most golfers have NO idea how much this impacts their ball flight. In this podcast, Mike Granato & Shaun Webb from Athletic Motion Golf sit down with Michael “Nipper” Nef, President and CEO of GEARS Golf, the most advanced golf swing motion capture system in the world. GEARS has captured millions of golf swings, including hundreds of thousands from PGA Tour players, giving researchers unprecedented insight into how the body and golf club actually move during a swing. We break down the science of shaft droop, torque, and deflection, why most golfers misunderstand how shafts behave, and how GEARS technology measures both body motion and club data simultaneously... something no other system can do with the same accuracy.Michael explains how GEARS measures:- Shaft bending, twisting, and drooping- Clubhead delivery and face angle- Body joint motion during the swing- Dynamic lie angle and how it affects shot shapeWe also dive deep into the GEARS Curve (sometimes called the Nipper Curve) — a concept showing why every club in your bag should be treated as a completely different tool during club fitting. If you've ever wondered:- Why long irons tend to go right- Why wedges sometimes pull left- Why traditional club fitting can miss critical variables- How PGA Tour players dial in equipment…this conversation will completely change how you think about the golf swing.Whether you're a golfer, coach, club fitter, or golf tech enthusiast, this episode explains the hidden physics behind the golf swing and how modern motion capture technology is revolutionizing instruction and equipment fitting.

If you've ever wondered how AI golf coaching actually works, this episode of the Athletic Motion Golf podcast with Mike Granato & Shaun Webb breaks it down in detail. We sit down with the creator of the Swing Coach app, the AI-powered golf swing analysis tool that's changing how golfers train using just an iPhone. We cover motion capture without markers, 120fps swing analysis, real-time voice feedback, face-on vs down-the-line data, shaft lean measurement, and the future of AI golf instruction. This is real golf swing data powered by custom-built AI models trained specifically for golf movement. We discuss how the Swing Coach app analyzes 120 frames per second, how it adapts to body type and limb length, and why most Android phones can't currently support the processing power required for this level of real-time golf swing feedback. If you care about:- Golf swing analysis- AI in sports training- Shaft lean & shallowing the club- Face-on vs down-the-line swing mechanics- Optimizing your golf practice sessionsWe also talk about:- Why great players move similarly- The “good player funnel”- Custom model swings coming soon- AI coaching trained on real instruction- Second-screen features for coaches- The Android hardware challenge- What's next for Swing Coach in 2026! Are men and women golf swings actually different? Or is there really just one fundamental golf swing? In this episode of the Athletic Motion Golf Podcast, Mike Granato and Shaun Webb sit down with instructor Nathalie Sheehan to discuss the real differences between male and female golfers, common swing tendencies, and how instructors should approach coaching each. While the fundamentals of the golf swing remain the same, Nathalie explains there are often physical tendencies and skill development differences that show up between male and female players. Some of the key topics covered include:• Why many female golfers struggle with grip strength early on • Common swing tendencies instructors see in men vs women • Why female golfers often over-rotate the backswing • The role of strength, flexibility, and posture in the golf swing • Why creativity in practice can improve scoring • How coaching juniors differs from coaching adult golfers • Mental game differences between male and female playersNathalie also shares her journey from competitive junior golf to becoming one of the top instructors in the game, working with players at Pelican Golf Club in Florida and appearing regularly on the Golf Channel. If you've ever wondered:Should women swing differently than men?Do female golfers need different instruction? Are there mechanical differences between male and female golf swings? This conversation breaks down the science, coaching insights, and real-world experience behind those questions.

This will be fun. Today we're hosting superstar golf coach Ritchie Smith for Hostplus, and boy oh boy do we have a bit to talk with him about.Ritchie is unquestionably the leading golf coach in Australia, and you can make a compelling argument that he is the leading coach in the world. His stable of players include (among others) Min Woo Lee, Minjee Lee, Hannah Green, David Micheluzzi, Yuka Saso. Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen start by finding out how Ritchie got into golf, he started as a player, and he was a good one, but transitioned into coaching quite early. We find out about how he selects which players he will work with, the criteria that he has, and how he finds them or how they are brought to his attention. There is quite the process and quite a checklist, Ritchie explains why this is so important to him. One of the attributes is that he only works with players who are prepared to be 'vulnerable', and he tells us why this is a non-negotiable for him.Ritchie coaches Ryan Peake who has had some well documented challenges, of his own making, and Ritchie discusses the background, how they reconnected, and how he helped Ryan integrate back into golf after some years away following his incarceration.Hannah Green is one of Ritchie's most successful golfers, he describes her as 'the prototype of what I'd like my golfers to be'. He explains how he identified her as a kid, her development in the shadow of a couple of bigger names, and more recently how Hannah and he have completely rebuilt her swing. He explains how and why, and the results. Ritchie started working with Minjee as a 12-year old when he, in his words, 'didn't know what I was doing', clearly he does now! He talks us through Minjee's putting issues, why they changed to the long putter, and the results. He also coaches Min Woo and we're interested in his insights into coaching him, and particularly the work they are doing on Min Woo's iron play. Ritchie says that ''his iron play (was) poor", and he explains how they have been fixing it to ensure that aspect of his game is stronger. And he explains why he got 'cranky' with Min Woo at the Cognizant Classic, what he said to him, and what he had him change....and what happened as a result.David Micheluzzi has just come on board to be coached by Ritchie, and he explains to us what they are working on, and the theory Micheluzzi had on his swing that Ritchie needed to disprove for their work together to be successful. And we finish by finding out what comes after golf for Ritchie, what are his plans and dreams when he gives golf away!A fascinating chat with arguably the worlds best golf coach, thanks to Hostplus it was great to host Ritchie Smith on Talk Birdie To Me.
If you're trying to increase driver distance, gain clubhead speed, or add serious carry to your drives, this episode of the Athletic Motion Golf Podcast with Mike Granato and Shaun Webb breaks down a real-world speed training transformation. In just four weeks, Athletic Motion Golf student Kyle increased his driver clubhead speed from 101 mph to 107 mph, producing 11 mph more ball speed and roughly 28 yards of additional carry distance. The best part? Every session was tracked and verified on a professional launch monitor (GC3 / Bushnell Launch Pro).Mike Granato and Shaun Webb walk through the exact speed training protocol, how many swings were required, how long each session took, and why hitting balls during speed training produced better results than traditional overspeed systems.Kyle explains how only two speed sessions per week (20–30 minutes each) completely changed his golf game — turning long iron approaches into wedges and making par 5s reachable. This episode covers:• The exact protocol used for speed training • How overspeed training actually works • Why hitting balls matters for speed development • How to track speed improvements correctly • What speed gains mean for scoring and approach shotsIf you're serious about hitting the driver farther and improving your golf performance, this podcast episode provides a real case study showing what happens when speed training is done correctly.
The time finally arrived on the show where I was joined by Ladies European Tour Caddy, TPG Golf Coach, Ex Pro player & The King of Italy, the one and only Giulio Castagnara who those familiar with the show will also remember him as the current partner and caddy of Alessandra Fanali. We struck up a good friendship after the final event of the year when out at Andalucia Costa Del Sol Open de Espana in Malaga. Legend! Giulio is from Pordenone just outside of Udine in North Eastern Italy and would go to Texas Christian University becoming a major player there at TCU contributing to multiple Academic All American first team picks as well as Scholar of the Year. In 2019 Giulio would turn professional and ply his trade on Alps Tour and played some tournaments on Challenge Tour for 4 years before by his own admission losing his love for the game during this time on the Golf Course will Golf evolving from strength to strength. Since stopping in 2022 Giulio would get his PGA Coaching licenses and would loop on the bag for a few events with Alessandra before going full time on the bag for Ale in 2024 with brilliant results on LET since then with numerous close shaves on tour in terms of being in contention and multiple Top 20 finishes for the Fanali/Castagnara combination with 4 Top 10 finishes on tour last year in 2025 including 2nd placed finish at Ford NSW Open in Woollongong. In mid 2025 Giulio would make a big announcement joining the team at TPG Golf to be a qualified Golf Coach with lessons online or getting the chance to go to the States recently to do in person coaching. Giulio is a true gentleman and a very funny guy with Fanali & Castagnara being one of my favourite duos on tour now! Can't thank them both enough for their generosity! All the best this week guys and for 2026! Downloads via Podbean, Apple Podcasts & Spotify while the recorded video will be on YouTube if that is your preferred version!

In this latest episode I was joined by Professional Golf Coach Alex Huang who joined me from freezing called Ohio to chat through his journey into coaching for players such as Caley McGinty, Fatima Fernandez Cano & Carolina Lopez-Chacarra giving out his methods and ethos of getting players where they want to be! Alex is from Ohio and would enjoy Golf as a hobby such as money matches with his buddies but would make his hand for 18 years playing Poker learning some of the techniques that also work while in the golf space. Around about 2023 it would be where he would meet owner of the brand Decade in Scott Fawcett while building up a strong friendship evolving around the love for the game of Golf. Alex would join Scott and get his chance at coaching with the College teams in Ohio then onto working with some of the LPGA & LET pro's. Alex would also strike a friendship with English LPGA/LET pro Caley McGinty where he would caddy for her at LPGA Q School in helping her become one of the only people to gain LPGA Tour status from back at First Stage a fantastic achievement for Caley. We talk about what it is like on tour when he has occasionally caddied for some talented players. I want to thank Alex for taking time out of his busy schedule to come on to chat with me. Enjoyed it and learned a lot more about the art of coaching! Be sure to download via Podbean, Apple Podcasts & Spotify while the video will also be out on YouTube if you prefer that option! Thanks
Is the “shallow the club” trend ruining your swing? In this episode, Mike Granato & Shaun Webb from Athletic Motion Golf sit down with Wills Murray...AMG's newest certified instructor now coaching out of The Lab in Monterey, California. Wills dives into what he's seeing on the West Coast, and we break down the overcorrection epidemic that's sabotaging thousands of amateur golfers trying to “get more shallow.”From over-shallowing and clubface control to why your backswing is killing your rotation—this episode unpacks it all. We also dig into the Gears 3D motion capture system and how it's changing the game for understanding your swing mechanics. If you've ever dropped kicked a driver, sliced your irons, or tried to look like a PGA pro based on YouTube swings… this one's for you.
A few months ago I finally hit a major milestone...After years of putting it off, I finally started taking golf lessons.Jasper, my coach (or "pro" as they say in the golf world), has been helping me develop a proper swing. But being me, I just can't help but look at Jasper through a service design lens. What is he actually selling me? Or better yet: what am I actually buying?Right now, I pay by the hour. That buys me Jasper's time and a bit of grass to practice on. But what if I didn't pay for the service, which is just time well saved, but rather for the outcome? What if Jasper promised to take me from someone who barely knows how to hold a club to being a confident, competent golfer? Because in the end, that's truly the identity shift I'm actually looking for.Just think about how much that proposition would change the dynamics, not just for me, but for Jasper's entire business model. When that offer is on the table, why would I ever settle for a coach selling me "practice time" (a commodity) when I could invest in the transformation I actually desire? This shift toward "transformations" as an economic offering isn't new.It was already described in the industry defining book The Experience Economy back in 1999.We've been lucky enough to have Joe Pine, the book's co-author, on the Show twice before. Now, he's back. It's been 27 years since he published the book that influenced so many of us, and he has just published the long-awaited follow-up titled, you guessed it, The Transformation Economy. In this episode, we sit down to chat about what this shift means for us as service design professionals and what it means for the future of business. I'm fairly certain this is the very first podcast where Joe discusses the new book, so we've got a true exclusive on our hands. So will this be the next chapter for our field? Listen to the episode to find out!As you listen to the conversation, I'd love for you to think about your own projects. Are you designing for "time well spent," or are you ready to guide your customers through a real identity shift?Enjoy the conversation and keep making a positive impact!Be well,~ Marc--- [ 1. This might be the most misunderstood concept in the golf swing… and it's costing golfers more than they realize. In this episode of the Athletic Motion Golf Podcast, Mike Granato and Shaun Webb break down one of the most commonly botched elements in the modern golf swing: shaft lean at impact.Golfers everywhere are obsessed with achieving that “tour-level look” — hands forward, clubface compressing the ball — but most are chasing a pose, not a position rooted in proper movement and mechanics. And the results? Inconsistent ball striking, weak compression, and frustration on the course.Mike and Shaun dive into:Why holding lag is ruining your swingThe truth about wrist angles and body positioningHow “posing impact” is hurting your real performanceWhy even elite players misunderstand what shaft lean actually isThe role of swing sequence and movement patterns in achieving natural compressionThis episode is for every player who's chased compression, tried to "hold the angle," or been told their hands need to be way forward at impact.

What if everything you thought about early extension was wrong? In this episode of the Athletic Motion Golf podcast, Mike Granato and Shaun Webb dive deep into one of the most misunderstood and misdiagnosed swing faults in golf: early extension. Most golfers (and sadly, a lot of coaches too) are watching the wrong hip, misreading camera angles, and making massive swing changes to fix a problem they don't fully understand. The result? Wrecked pivots, locked hips, and stalled progress. This is the real truth about early extension — and how it's often a symptom, not the root cause.Inside, we'll unpack:The #1 camera mistake that leads to misdiagnosisWhy your lead knee and hip rotation matter more than trail side movementHow most swing aids and drills make the problem worseWhat you should actually focus on to fix your swingWhy locking your pelvis down is destroying your power and consistency
Are you struggling with early extension, poor pelvic control, or losing depth in your backswing? You're not alone — and today, we're breaking it all down.In this episode of the Athletic Motion Golf podcast, Mike Granato and Shaun Webb sit down with golf coach and biomechanics expert Erik Barzeski to uncover the most common swing faults they see in golfers of all levels — and more importantly, how to fix them. From pelvis thrust and hip overturn to trail knee extension and loss of depth, Erik brings years of data-backed coaching experience using tools like Gears and force plates to help golfers identify what's really going wrong in their swing.Topics include:Why most amateur golfers misuse their pelvis during the backswingThe real reason your trail knee is causing early extensionHow to control hip rotation for a more athletic swingCreating better pivot and arm structure to stop losing depthThe truth about sway, pressure shifts, and shoulder tilt mechanicsWhether you're a competitive player or a weekend warrior, this episode is packed with real-world fixes that will make your swing more athletic, more consistent, and more powerful.
