“Creating an empowering, child centric, PLAYful learning environment and watching children shine.” Kate Tempesta's education, and early career, focused on exercise science and fitness. She later transitioned to the educational arena where she created and taught the movement education program at St. Thomas More Play Group for ten years. After becoming an LPGA T&CP member, she founded the Urban Golf Academy to combine her passions for golf, early childhood education, and movement. To this day she considers herself to have the best job in the world. Kate has spoken on several panels about growing the game of golf, including the Inaugural PGA of America Junior Golf Summit, the National Golf Course Owners Association Annual Conference, Proponent Group's Power of 6 and Under presentation, as well as the Youth & Family Golf Summit at the 2014 PGA Show. Additionally, the PGA of Canada invited Kate to take part in their professional development series, offering Canadian PGA members the opportunity to learn some of the best practices of UGA. The most useful of which are UGA's trademark “Birdie-isms”; effective and engaging metaphors that take the complex physical, mental, and emotional concepts of golf and make them both accessible and memorable for children. Over the years, with Kate at the helm, UGA has provided the joy of golf to 1,000 children annually. The philosophy is that children learn most effectively when having fun at any age. We are serious about the “fun factor” and we are serious about playing golf! In our classes, students engage in age-appropriate activities focused on golf while connecting to physical, social, cultural and academic concepts. Our classes and activities empower students to work as part of a team, build self-confidence and sportsmanship skills, and develop an aptitude and love for the game of golf. Most recently, Kate has engaged with her team to develop the Birdie Basics and Birdie Basics Pro boxes; a joint curriculum, lecture series, and utility kit that gives parents, teachers, and professional coaches alike the tools and access to implement UGA's proven methods to turn their children and students into lifelong golfers. Kate resides on the Upper West Side of New York City. In her spare time, you can find Kate kickboxing, swinging a sword and planning how UGA can positively effect children the world over. Kate regularly practices gratitude and believes in leaving each day a little better off than when it started. Enjoy.

It's Masters Sunday and we are catching up with Jon Sorbo. Jon was top player in professional tennis before his career was derailed by illness and he was forced to retire young. He moved right into coaching – at first with individual players, but then in 2004 he joined on as the National coach for tennis in Canada. After a few years of this demanding position, he moved away from coaching to raise his young family. Presently Jon does coach individual players and consults with various tennis organizations – all the while applying most of his energy to building his own golf skills. As a coach, Jon was an early adopter in areas of sports science and the application of systematic coaching strategies throughout the Canadian tennis landscape. The ripples of his ground-breaking work in the early millennium have created a surge for Canadian tennis in the modern game. Jon believes in the systematic development of key skills, and excels as a coach for high performers who are willing to train at the very highest, calculated, intensity. Jon has become a passionate golfer who carries a scratch mindset and tremendous skill. He can frequently be seen honing and sharpening his skills on the practice areas around the facilities at Richmond Hill and Coppinwood. When he practices, he is the embodiment of what we describe as “deep practice” – a deliberate and focused style of training that is a model of how a serious coach would want his pupils to train. Hope you enjoy the discussion and the tradition unlike any other.

#7 - Golf Statistics with Peter Sanders

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 14, 2021 40:31

In this episode we dive into the work of Peter Sanders and his analytic software called “shotbyshot”. This is a golf specific software which analyzes the strokes you make throughout your round and gives insights into how well your various skills are contributing to your success or failures as you play. Filled with practical discussion about the tactics and relevant statistics in the game, this episode is filled with useful information to help you enjoy your on-course experiences all the more. Understanding probability and learning to accept our own fallibility are two of the immediate take-aways we encounter through Peter's work, but beyond those core ideas there are some great hints and illuminations surrounding key skills of the game, things to avoid as much as you can, and also some great general discussions about playing the game effectively. Peter's software is extremely useful and popular – it's an app that you access after you play and after 5-7 minutes of input you get a nice report on where you lost or gained strokes through your round, and over a series of rounds you get an excellent x-ray of where your game is at. Armed with this self-awareness, you can then embark on the process of bringing your weaknesses up a notch, while continuing to refine and play to your strengths. Please let us know your thoughts about this episode and share your comments or reactions with our community. And thank you for listening to our conversations.

#6 - Tactics. Play. Accept. Repeat.

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 7, 2021 40:32

In this episode, Jon and Carter circle around the concept of tactics and strategy in the sport of golf – and especially drill into the idea of how accurate statistics can help us to accept our errors with more understanding and less upbraiding. On the topic of tactics, Carter and Jon go into the famous “Pythagoras” system for probabilities and open up about their own best practices for teaching and developing tactical awareness in their players. Furthermore, a significant focus quickly becomes on how having a more accurate depiction of the fallibility of golfers can help fallible golfers feel more “normal” and in turn they can be more accepting. This allows them to move from shot to shot in a more resourceful state, instead of “beating themselves up” for errors that they would be better off accepting as part of their game. For example, isn't it interesting how many of us lament missing an 8 foot putt (pros make less than 50% of these by the way!) and how we allow this disappointment to seep into other aspects of our game? Wouldn't it be so much better if we could simply accept the fact that missing shots is part of the game, and the sooner we do this (practice acceptance) the sooner we can move deeper into the more intrinsic satisfactions – i.e. “well at least I did everything I could control to be successful…” After some discussion about tactics and acceptance, the panel then welcomes a legend of golf statistics and analytics – Peter Sanders – who has been consulting with professional and amateur golfers for over 25 years, and who created the gold standard in statistical analysis for golf - entitled “Shot by Shot”. We take some time to introduce Peter to our community (he has been behind the scenes for many of you already who use his app and software religiously) and lay the foundation for his insights in the upcoming episode 7. Enjoy the discussion!

#5 - Catching Up With Phil Brown

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 28, 2021 40:39

In this episode we are joined by a high-performance athlete, Phil Brown, who has devoted much of his life to training his skills for competitive skiing, and also happens to be a passionate golfer. Phil helped the Canadian squad win silver in the team event which made its Olympic debut at PyeongChang 2018. Years before he had competed in his first Olympic Games at Sochi 2014, the highlight of which was a top-20 finish in the slalom. Brown made his World Cup debut in January 2012 but continued to compete on the Nor-Am Cup circuit. In 2012-13 he captured the overall Nor-Am giant slalom title thanks to a victory in the last race of the season and finished second in the overall Nor-Am alpine standings. This episode is filled with great insights into what makes high performers “tick” and what motivates one to seek out excellence which is so distinguished from the norm, this episode covers a broad spectrum of material related to the intrinsic draw of sport in general. This interview draws out core themes which are seen from week to week – themes like delayed gratification, anchoring our state, and the joy (and pain) of searching out of best self through will power and self-discipline. We are sure you will enjoy Phil's calm and thorough excavation into his own development as an athlete, and also the ways in which he and Carter draw parallels between the game of golf and his skiing journey. Enjoy the conversation and be sure to subscribe and leave a review.

In this episode, Coach Jon and Coach Carter take a stab at describing the indescribable – the curious sensory overload that comes from striking a golf ball with a metal stick. Whether it be the curiosity of a projectile flying through the air, the goosebumps in our forearms when we compress a ball, or simply the fluid motion of a nice tempo, the joys of ball striking are felt deeply among the pure golf collective. Once one has experienced a pure shot, the addiction has been planted, and one's life will at least in some part be devoted to seeking out further instances of that feeling. Enjoy the discussion and be sure to share with your golfing buds.

#3 - Sitting Down with Derek Ingram

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 14, 2021 39:14

Episode 3 features the legendary Canadian golf coach Derek Ingram, who has been at the helm of a variety of teams with the National team programs over the past 20 or so years. Derek is an extremely open and honest man who cares for his players and who is what you might term an “inside-out” coach – which is to say that he focuses on the inner game as an avenue to bring his players more success on the outer arenas of sport and competition. Derek was a fine player in his own right who turned to coaching to satisfy his own personal virtues of supporting and helping others, and the world of Canadian golf is all the better for this decision he made in the late 1990's. We are sure you'll enjoy listening to the insights and stories that Derek shares in this episode, but more than anything we are certain you will discover why he is so revered by his players and the many coaches around the country over which he has had tremendous influence. And while his humility and self-deprecating humour will keep him from ever mentioning this fact, the success of the Team Canada program over recent years is in large part due to the attitude and efforts of the “Dragon Coach”, Derek Ingram. Enjoy, and remember to share and engage so we can grow our community of golfers who play the game in its purest form.

    #2 - Being Mindful

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 7, 2021 37:48

The discussions in Episode 2 are a blend of two distinct but related influences. The centre-piece of this show is a portion of our interview time with legendary Canadian golf coach Derek Ingram - who aside from coaching National Teams in Canada for over twenty years is also one of the nicest and most authentic guys you'll ever meet. His resume as a coach is astoundingly strong, but he would certainly be the last person to let you know. Players from his National Team programs are reaching heights in the game heretofore unseen in Canadian golf history, and the positive results seem to evolve with each passing year. Derek's thoughts about his coaching and player development are at the centre of this podcast, around which hosts Carter and Jon engage in a spirited discussion about the merits and misrepresentations we see in the “new science” of mindfulness and its application in sport and skill development. The link between Derek Ingram and mindfulness is not too much of a stretch - Derek is an empathetic, considerate and “transformative” coach who helps his players become more task oriented and present, while mindfulness as a practice is really an extension of the values that Derek preaches in his coaching. Offering a broad spectrum of ideas that will surely stimulate discussions and reflections in our listeners, we encourage you to share your reactions to this episode with us and our community as much as you can. Thanks for engaging.

Carter and Jon introduce themselves and set the stage for the Pure Golf Collective podcast itself. The overarching goal of this podcast is to explore the intrinsic motivations of golfers, and the shared obsession with the purity of the game. This podcast will serve as a space for unpacking the belief systems that distract us from these pure goals, and have as an avowed purpose the concept of shedding light in areas that are usually left in the dark. If the goal of the podcast is to create ripples of influence over golf purists for years to come, then this episode represents the throwing of the rock into the pond to begin the rippling effect.
