20-time winner on the PGA Tour, Hale Irwin takes us back to his early days on Tour and shares the lessons he learned from mentors like Bruce Devlin and Dale Douglas. Surviving the pressures of being a "Monday qualifier", Hale finally closed the deal in his fifth year on Tour, prevailing at the 1973 Sea Pines Heritage Classic. Confidence from that first victory propelled him to success the following year at the U.S. Open at Winged Foot and at the Piccadilly Match Play at Wentworth GC. Listen in as he recounts his 1975 successes which included another Piccadilly win and leading the U.S. side with 4 1/2 points in his first Ryder Cup with Arnold Palmer as the captain at Laurel Valley. We conclude this episode with Hale remembering his improbable comeback win at the 1976 Citrus Open and the life lesson from his father to always finish what you started. Hale Irwin recalls his early professional years, "FORE the Good of the Game."Give Bruce & Mike some feedback via Text. The Top 100 in 10 Golf PodcastThe story of a quest to play the Top 100 Golf courses in the UK & Ireland in just 10 yearsListen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showFollow our show and/or leave a review/rating on: Our Website https://www.forethegoodofthegame.com/reviews/new/ Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fore-the-good-of-the-game/id1562581853 Spotify Podcasts https://open.spotify.com/show/0XSuVGjwQg6bm78COkIhZO?si=b4c9d47ea8b24b2d Google Podcasts https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5idXp6c3Byb3V0LmNvbS8xNzM3Mjc1LnJzcw About "FORE the Good of the Game” is a golf podcast featuring interviews with World Golf Hall of Fame members, winners of major championships and other people of influence in and around the game of golf. It was known as the Massacre at Winged Foot. The 1974 US Open was a brutal four days for some of the greatest golfers in the history of the game. Nicklaus, Palmer, Trevino, Floyd, Miller and Watson all were tamed by the course... but a little known 29-year old PGA tour veteran was slow and steady and when it came to Sunday, Hale Irwin was ready to pounce... with the help of his caddie... a homegrown kid by the name of Peter McGarey. And when we say kid, we're not kidding. Peter was 16 years old and right in the middle of one of the greatest group of golfers ever assembled. How did he hold up during this incredible week? What was it like working for a future Hall of Famer and how did the two get paired up for a week they'll both never forget? How did he react where everywhere he looked was a golf icon he grew up idolizing? The kid isn't a kid anymore but Peter still looks back on his great fortune from 50 years ago with the the awe of a teenager who was swept up in a moment he'll never forget. We're back this week on Chasin' Birdies with an atypical approach to our episode. We have a guest joining us in our banter while we discuss all things golf. Vincent Trocheck (NY Rangers) sits down with us and breaks down the U.S. Open as well as other topics trending in golf. We dive into Bryson's epic win at Pinehurst No.2 and recap the battle between him and Rory. Not that our thoughts matter, but we are fans of Bryson. We talk about his role on and off the course and how he can be the leader to mend the divide in golf.We get into Troch's quick trip to Fisher's Island and discuss the course as well as other trendy clubs in NY. We hear about his Member-Guest tournament coming up, which is at Winged Foot…not a big deal. We turn the episode over to some other banter and talk about some current golf topics, like highlighting the Allegheny Member-Guest, Pepe's injury, and Neal Shipley turning pro. This banter is exactly that…a banter. Tune in, share, like, dislike, but as always, we appreciate the listen. Key Links:Visit redvanly.com for great golf apparel now repped by Chasin' Birdies. Only six men have won the U.S. Open Golf Championship at least three times, and Hale Irwin's three titles spanned 16 years. From his 7-over par (yes) winning score 50 years ago at Winged Foot to his "victory lap" at Medinah in 1990, Hale combined a cerebral approach with a wicked long-iron game to tame the beasts put forth by the USGA. Have a listen to the World Golf Hall of Famer who never shied from golf's biggest stages.
To say that Paul R. Latshaw is one of the most accomplished and influential golf course superintendents of all time would not be an overstatement. He is the only superintendent in history to host all three U.S. majors, he's been a mentor to countless industry leaders, and he changed how courses are prepared for championship golf. Oakmont, Augusta National, Congressional, Riviera, Winged Foot and others benefited from his innovative and energetic approach to greenkeeping. We are thrilled to share our conversation with this giant of the golf course maintenance industry as he reflects on a remarkable career.
The people's caddie, Geno Bonnalie, joins the pod to discuss his original letter/email to Joel Dahmen, how the two have seen their popularity grow since the release of Netflix's "Full Swing" and how he balances life on the road with being a Dad and a husband back in Idaho. Bonnalie also talks about his famous Winged Foot hotel video, being the mascot in college and his role as one of the five caddie "Ball Masters" for SAXX Underwear.

Colin Burns had only 4.5 years of experience in hospitality when he applied for the club manager's position at Winged Foot, one of the most storied private golf clubs in the nation, if not the world. And, after an eight-month search process, he was selected as the club's next general manager – all 31 years ago when Colin had just crossed the line into his thirties. He recalls the president of the club asking him if Colin weren't a tad young for the job. Colin replied: It's not a permanent condition. As we watch a generation of these long-serving club managers move into retirement or consulting – in addition to Colin, we lost Brian Kroh just this month at John's Island Club in Vero Beach, Florida – we are left with a legacy from which we can all learn. Colin's experience is second to none. He managed the US Open during the height of Covid. Five full years of planning all going down the drain as he had to work with the Governor of New York and plan the tournament without spectators as Bryson DeChambeau put his indelible mark on the sport. Now as he joins executive search firm GGA, Colin discusses how every club has a different environment and that search committees, managers and search firms should understand the club's culture first before trying to match a candidate to the club. Do Things with People, Not to Them If you really desire a quality organization you should do things with people, not to them. Burns has put this as his central motif throughout his career. And, with that teamwork sentiment, Colin points out that the hierarchy of a private members club staff doesn't always equate to salary levels. The director of golf, tennis, squash, or even agronomy, may indeed be the highest paid member of staff at many clubs. And what's even more meaningful to club staff members than base compensation? Housing is top of Colin's list and finds it the top of his staff members' list as well. Retiring To a Zenith at Apogee And finally, Apogee means zenith or the highest point of development – and Colin's new project is certainly a zenith of physical land development and a highlight of a continuing, outstanding career. Originally named COO for an incredible project based in Hobe Sound, Florida, now senior advisor, Colin is truly excited about Apogee. It's a three-course extravaganza – or as he calls it “Streamsong on Steroids.” Designers Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner, Mike Davis and Tom Fazio and Kyle Phillips have teamed up with financial backing from Dolphins owner Steve Ross. Colin takes us through the plans and the vastness of this incredible project, and how this team is betting on South Florida moving up to Martin County in the very near future beyond Jupiter and toward sleepy Stuart.

When Johnny Miller shot his famous 63 in the final round at Oakmont in 1973, it instantly became one of the most staggering achievements in the history of major championship golf. For the USGA, it was also something else: an insult. Oakmont was supposed to be one of the toughest courses in the world, and the U.S. Open was supposed to be the toughest test in professional golf. What Miller did undermined that identity, and when the Open came to Winged Foot one year later, the one certainty was that it wouldn't happen again. From the tournament committee to the club members, the mission was to return the U.S. Open to its place of prominence by all means necessary. The course the players encountered that summer was a monster, and they were its victims. What happened next can only be described as carnage; this week on Local Knowledge, we look at why it happened, and what it tells us about America's national open and the people who run it.
Jay Flemma is joined by Gene Westmoreland to talk about the Anderson Memorial and all things Winged Foot.
Public Service Announcement: Every golfer should get fit for their equipment. But not because it's better for your game (it is) or because it keeps people employed (it does), but because it makes you feel like a tour pro for 30 minutes. Plus, you have someone to blame now when you still slice that $1000 driver into the woods. The RTG guys revel in testing some new gear, and of course, preview the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill. From caddying at Winged Foot as a kid to starting a niche clothing brand called BDraddy, the game is embedded into the life Billy lives today. In this episode: We discuss his early years exiting Boston University, entering the workforce, and the factors at play during that phase of life. Eventually we briefly cover the product(s) he and the team work so hard to put out into the market. Lastly, brotherhood- a central theme in BDraddy's Mission, Vision, and Values. And in true Tie fashion, we finish with some coffee talk because... it simply had to be done. Like anyone at the top of their game, the final outcome is so simple that it looks to have been easy. The hours of iteration, though, is what we never see... but makes it so gratifying to wear. As we move into the future, we look forward to cover more of Billy's story- that of Bdraddy- and the rest of Summit's commitment to the amateur game, as well as the professional one.
