7 Questions Including Why I Criticize Investment Advisors 12 October 2022

Welcome to Safe Dividend Investing's Podcast # 85, on October 12th of 2022.  Today, I answer seven interesting investment questions:1. Why are you so hard on financial advisors? Most advisors work strictly for the betterment of their clients. I also know without a doubt that financial companies have a zero-tolerance policy for advisors who operate otherwise. I resent your implication that the typical financial advisor's recommendations are more concerned with his compensation than the well-being of their clients?  2. Would you agree that financial advisors recommend annuities as an investment because they offer both zero-downside risk and have tremendous upside potential, not because it is part of their compensation?  3. Is there a risk in buying a stock for its dividend? 4. Why do investors panic during a stock market crash?  5. Should I pay a financial advisor to select the stocks for my portfolio, or should I do it myself?   6. Is it possible to set up a stock portfolio without having to constantly spend hours on research and paperwork? 7. If there is always a reason behind stock price movements, does it create predictable patterns?            ****************************************************************   The objective of these podcasts is to turn all investors into successful, self-directed, financially independent investors.  For more insights into investing and stock scoring, go to, www.saferbetterdividendinvesting.com.  Investment books by Ian Duncan MacDonald: American High Dividend Handbook - (3.5% + NYSE & NASDAQ dividend stocks)Canadian High Dividend Handbook - (3.5% + dividend stocks on the TSX)Safer Better Dividend Investing  - (US & Canada high dividend stocks)Income and Wealth from Self-Directed Investing - (trials of a new investor)All books are available from amazon.com as e-books or in print: Those purchasing an investment book can request the IDM stock scoring software at no additional charge. Check out Ian's three novels at amazon.com. Beware the Abandoned - (a capitalist sect exploiting poverty); Using Drought USA -  (solving the South West drought);Duel - (Repercussions of establishing a Chinese military base in the Caribbean).  If you are interested in Ian's art, visit his Fine Art America website a https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/ian-macdonald Ian Duncan MacDonaldAuthor, Artist, Commercial Risk Consultant,President of Informus Inc 2 Vista Humber Drive Toronto, Ontario Canada, M9P 3R7 Toronto Telephone - 416-245-4994 New York Telephone - 929-800-2397 imacd@informus.ca

Counsel to Counsel - Career Advice for Lawyers

Retirement today is very different than it was 50 years ago. People are living longer, and lawyers, like many other knowledge workers, have the ability to work well into their 60s, 70s and beyond. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was productive well into her late 80s. But for many lawyers, continuing to work is a default option rather than something that has been carefully planned out. Part of the reason is that lawyers have very strong professional identities. Part of the reason is finances.     As high-income earners, many lawyers fear that they won't have enough money to last them throughout retirement. That fear needs to be addressed before decisions can be made.  From my perspective as a career coach, I see lawyers creating meaningful and productive “third chapters” of their lives. A crucial part of this is to look at finances.  Given how long many Americans are now living, taking the time to prepare to finance your possibly lengthy retirement is essential in making a successful career transition. Finances should really be the first step in any transition planning.  If you are healthy, it can be an exciting time of life.  Figuring out how you will make it all work financially is an important first step. My guest,  has written a new book on that very subject.  In this episode, we discuss her book and the financial considerations for lawyers who are planning for their next stage of life. Julie Jason is the author of The Discerning Investor: Personal Portfolio Management In Retirement For Lawyers (and Their Clients). Julie is an investment manager who started out on Wall Street as a lawyer. Thirty years ago, she founded her own Investment Counsel firm—Jackson, Grant, Investment Advisers, Inc. of Stamford, CT, a fiduciary boutique—where her team manages personal portfolios for high-net-worth families. She writes and speaks frequently on financial literacy and related topics .  I met Julie while serving on a panel put together by the  Senior Lawyers Division of the American Bar Association.  Other Resources Succession Planning for Your Career: What Comes Next? Taylor Griffin enjoyed an eight-year professional basketball career, competing in the NBA, G-League and leagues in Belgium and Italy. He was drafted by the Phoenix Suns in 2009. That same year, his younger brother, Blake Griffin, was drafted first-overall by the L.A. Clippers. In this interview, we talk about Taylor's upbringing and what it was like playing high school basketball for his father, Tommy. We discuss managing family dynamics and how he and Blake were able to not only avoid sibling rivalry, but come together as colleagues after Taylor's playing career ended. Taylor takes us through his professional basketball career to provide important insights for players who find themselves competing internationally. Growing up and attending college in Oklahoma, his international basketball experiences took him a long way from home. What he found, though, was love for new cultures, which he shares with us—along with some travel tips. Taylor's professional basketball career came to a close in 2016. At the time, thanks in part to his roster spot on then one of the most exciting teams in professional sports and its place in Los Angeles, Blake was being inundated with investment opportunities. Knowing he could trust his brother, he turned to Taylor for help. Today, along with being the Chief Operating Officer for Blake Griffin Enterprises, Taylor is the Head of Athlete Relations for Patricoff Co., an advisory service firm for professional athletes. Here, Taylor talks about transitioning from a career in sports and how he was able to quickly develop financial and investment acumen. He provides great, practical advice for how athletes and others can get started in investing. You want to be as financially unbreakable as possible, even after your career ends, right? No matter what age you “retire”, or stop working, you still need to have an income to thrive. So, how do you plan to have an income after you stop working?   In this episode of Off the Wall, hosts David Armstrong and Jessica Gibbs welcome Christine Benz, Director of Personal Finance and Retirement Planning at Morningstar, to talk about how to plan to have an income when you aren't working anymore, regardless of your age.   Listen in to learn the recommended withdrawal rate for spending, the role of asset allocation and inflation in retirement planning, and how to navigate a down market near the end of your career. Plus, you'll learn tips and tactics for making your savings last longer, refilling your cash reserve after spending it, and improving the sustainability of your post-career wealth plan.   “Most people, if they have a more vanilla asset class exposure in their portfolios, will not find easy pickings for rebalancing, which is why I think we come back to this idea of having 12 months', 18 months', 2 years' worth of portfolio withdrawals in cash to protect you in an environment like this one.” – Christine Benz   Episode Timeline/Key Highlights: [00:55] Introducing Christine Benz & The topic of today's episode [02:59] The 4% withdrawal rate explained & Is it still the right rule of thumb for retirement? [08:21] Variables, like bequest motives, that influence your personal withdrawal strategy. [11:38] When is the updated Morningstar report on withdrawal rates coming out? [12:36] Sequence of return risk & How should investors navigate a down market around the end of their full-time job? [21:14] How to refill and rebalance your cash bucket, bond bucket, growth bucket, etc. [29:03] Practical ways to make your savings last longer without compromising your quality of life. [33:55] Do I need a financial planner? [35:36] How to approach rising inflation in retirement.
