Paul Stastny's 3rd goal of the series, 6 minutes into overtime, gave the Hurricanes a 2-1 win over the Islanders and ended the series in Game 6 on Long Island. Trailing 1-0 midway through the 3rd period, Sebastian Aho batted down a puck and then backhanded it past Ilya Sorokin to even the score. Frederik Andersen made his first playoff start in a Hurricanes uniform and stopped 33 shots for the win and closed out a postseason series for the first time in 8 years. His last series-ending win was on May 10, 2015 when his Anaheim Ducks knocked off the Calgary Flames in the Western Conference semifinals. The Canes await the winner of the series between the Devils and Rangers in the second round.
Paul Stastny's overtime goal gave the Carolina Hurricanes a 2-1 victory in game six over the New York Islanders and the Canes are now moving on to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They'll now await the winner of the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers series. Also, with the first overall pick in the NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers selected Bryce Young. The Panthers held their introductory press conference yesterday to introduce the quarterback.
The Hurricanes played well, but were victim to a couple of costly mistakes in a 3-2 loss at PNC Arena in Game 5. The series now shifts back to Long Island for Game 6 on Friday night. Brent Burns and Jaccob Slavin combined on a 1st period miscue that ended up on Pierre Engvall's stick and he slid the puck underneath the left pad of Antti Raanta for a 1-0 lead. Then, New York got a fortunate bounce as an Engvall shot deflected off the face of Sebastian Aho and fell to Brock Neslon at the side of the goal. Nelson batted the puck in out of the air for a 2-0 lead. Paul Stastny brought a goal back on a deflection of a Jalen Chatfield point shot. But, the Isles restored the 2-goal margin late in the 2nd period after Martin Necas had the puck stolen from him at the blue line leading to a Matt Barzal goal. Sebastian Aho closed out the scoring midway through the 3rd on a beautiful pass from Seth Jarvis but Carolina couldn't find the equalizer.
Jesper Fast scored at 5:03 of overtime as the Hurricanes rallied to beat the Islanders, 4-3, and take a 2-0 series lead in their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series. The Canes and Isles will play Game 3 on Friday night on Long Island. Carolina had a 2-0 lead midway through the 2nd period thanks to a Paul Stastny goal and an own goal off the stick of New York defenseman Sebastian Aho. But, some loose play and shaky goaltending saw the Islanders take a 3-2 lead on goals from Kyle Palmeiri, Matthew Barzal and Brock Nelson. But, Jaccob Slavin scored off Ilya Sorokin from behind the goal line with less than 8 minutes to play in regularion setting up Fast's overtime heroics. Carolina lost forward Teuvo Teravainen to a broken hand on a late 3rd period slash, he'll have surgery on Thursday and is out indefinitely.

Antti Raanta made 14 saves in his first appearance in three and a half weeks as the Hurricanes shut out the Canadiens, 3-0, at the Bell Centre in Montreal. Brady Skjei, Paul Stastny and Sebastian Aho each scored as the Canes snapped a 3-game losing streak. For Skjei, his 17th goal of the season set a franchise record for most team goals in a season from the blue line. Carolina now has 52 goals from defensemen this year with 7 games left to play. Aho's 34th came on the power play and closed out the scoring. The Hurricanes were 3 for 3 on the penalty kill. They maintain a 1-point lead on the New Jersey Devils heading into Sunday's home game with the New York Islanders.

The Hurricanes kept it simple in their 3-2 win in Washington. They got to the front of the net to create traffic in front of the Capitals' goal. They got pucks through from the blue line and the Canes scored two of their three goals on net front deflections. Throw in 34 Freddie Andersen save and you have the recipe for a 3-2 win. Brent Burns, Paul Stastny and Stefan Noesen scored and Noesen added an assist hitting for 2 points for the 4th time this year. Carolina is off Wednesday before coming back to PNC Arena on Thursday to induct Cam Ward into the Hurricanes Hall of Fame
Sebastian Aho's 22nd goal of the year capped a 4-goal comeback as the Carolina Hurricanes won for the 6th straight time. The Canes entered the 3rd period trailing 4-1 after an utterly disastrous 2nd period. Carolina was a puck management and decision-making catastrophe in the middle frame and the mistakes cost them on 3 of the four goals -- at least. But, similarly to Friday's win over the Sharks, this team doesn't understand that sometimes it's just not your night. And, when Paul Stastny potted a rebound of a Derek Stepan shot 3 1/2 minutes into the 3rd period, you could sense the difference. Jordan Staal scored 6 minutes later to draw within 1. Then Teuvo Teravainen's power play goal leveled the score. Freddie Andersen won his 6th straight decision since returning from injury. Canes are in Buffalo Wednesday night as they close out the pre All Star Game portion of the schedule.
Special teams won the day as the Hurricanes beat the Boston Bruins, 4-1, at PNC Arena. Paul Stastny scored a power play goal, Jordan Staal scored a shorthanded goal into an empty net and the Canes' penalty kill was a perfect 6 for 6 in sending the Bruins to their third straight loss. Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis also scored in the win, Carolina's 5th in a row as they also extend their point streak to 8 consecutive games (7-0-1).
The Carolina Hurricanes blew a 2-0 first period lead, then a 3-2 lead in the closing seconds of regulation before falling, 4-3, in a shootout to the Vancouver Canucks. Paul Stastny and Jordan Martinook scored first period goals to stake the Canes to the 2-goal lead even though it wasn't by any measure a well-played period. Vancouver brought one goal back in the 2nd period and then leveled the score 7 1/2 minutes into the 3rd. But, Sebastian Aho's goal with just under 3 minutes left should have been the game-winner. I said "should have", it was not. Brock Boeser tied the game with 17 seconds left and then Elias Pettersson won it in the shooout. The Canes have now played an NHL leading 15 overtime games this year with a 7-8 record after regulation.
The Carolina Hurricanes fired 67 shots at Nashville goalie Juuse Saros -- a franchise record number -- but only got 3 of them through and lost, 5-3. Carolina has now dropped 2 straight after winning 11 in a row. Max Pacioretty made his Hurricanes debut, had 6 of the Hurricanes' record total shots, but couldn't find the range. Andrei Svechnikov had a team-high 8 SOG and 10 individual scoring chances but didn't register a point in the loss. On the bright side, Andrei was selected to the Metropolitan Division All Star Team on Thursday. His 19 goals lead the Hurricanes and this will be his first All Star Game appearance. The Canes got goals from Paul Stastny, Brady Skjei and Jordan Staal in the losing effort. Next up, Saturday afternoon at Columbus.
On a night when Carolina was down to 11 healthy forwards the Hurricanes thoroughly dominated the Islanders in a 3-0 win. Pyotr Kochetkov turned aside 16 shots, Paul Stastny scored his first goal of the season and Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jordan Staal added 3rd period goals in the win. The captain's line, with Jordan Martinook and Stefan Noesen, was dominant -- again. Carolina is 4-0-1 on this 6-game road trip that ends Tuesday night in Detroit. In all, the Canes have gone 5-0-4 in their last 9 on the road and are 5-0-2 in their last 7 games.
Bernie visits with Andy Strickland ahead of the Blues' matchup versus the Carolina Hurricanes Thursday night. Andy and Bernie discuss if Paul Stastny has had the best career of any St. Louis product in the NHL as he makes what could be his final appearance as a player at Enterprise Center.

Locked On Avalanche - Daily Podcast On The Colorado Avalanche
The market for free agent forwards got a little smaller Tuesday as Paul Stastny signed a 1 year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes for $1.5 million. We don't know if the Colorado Avalanche were interested in bringing Stastny back to Denver, but can we assume if they wanted to they could have easily done so? The fact they didn't bring him back leads us to believe they were looking elsewhere in the FA market. But where? Chris and Kyle talk about those forward free agents remaining and if the Avs could have interest in any of them. And if they do not facilitate a trade to replace the void left by Nazem Kadri and sign one of the free agents left, we have our answer on what they plan to do at the 2C position. All that and more! Rob, Sara and Jesse discuss the latest injury to Max Pacioretty, as the newest Carolina Hurricane needs surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon. With NHL transactions slowing down, the roundtable takes a look at the 13 NHL teams currently over the cap and the most attractive remaining unrestricted free agents including Nazem Kadri who most in the Hockey world believe is destined to become a New York Islander, plus remaining UFA's Phil Kessel, PK Subban, Evan Rodrigues and Paul Stastny who are still searching for a new home. Billy Jaffe, studio analyst for the Boston Bruins on NESN, and Co-host of Morning Bru with Andrew Raycroft joins the roundtable from Prague to discuss the Bruins active last few weeks including re-signing Captain Patrice Bergeron, the return of David Krejci, extending new acquisition Pavel Zacha and Jim Montgomery being hired to be the new head coach for a Bruins team who are poised to give it one more shot at another Stanley Cup with this roster. While the NHL offseason has been an extremely hectic time for most General Managers across the league, others have seemingly had an extended vacation with a lack of emphasis on summer moves. Flip and Steele highlight those three teams while also discussing the positions that need attention and the potential unrestricted free-agent players that could fill those holes. For example, could Sonny Milano be a good fit for a Golden Knights team lacking in left wing talent? Should the New York Islanders awake from their slumber and take a swing at the top free-agent UFA left on the market in Nazem Kadri? Tune in and find out. We also take a look into the potential fantasy hockey impacts of these moves with a discussion on the Boston Bruins and their lack of depth up the middle. Could a guy like Paul Stastny be a good fit for the Bruins? Steele wraps up the show taking another dive into the Seattle Kraken's situation and serves up his take that the Kraken have a lot of pieces to work with and could be a team putting together a package of young players and picks to acquire a big-name veteran either up front or on the blue-line. On today's episode of Locked on Wild, we discuss a few potential free agent options for the Wild to look at. We start with Evan Rodrigues, a former Pittsburgh Penguin who has been in the league for several years. Would the Wild look at trying to strike lightning in a bottle again like they did with signing Freddy Gaudreau? Would Rodrigues be able to replicate his success in Pittsburgh last year? We also discuss Sonny Milano. Would he be able to help fill Kevin Fiala's shoes in a similar role? We finish talking about Paul Stastny. Are the Wild enough of a contender for him to sign here? Is his age too much of a risk?
