It's an IAQ Deep Dive…part two! Matt welcomes Sean Harris back to the studio to continue their discussion indoor air quality improvements for existing homes, focusing on mold prevention, HVAC upgrades, filtration, and dehumidification—especially in hot, humid climates like Texas. Sean emphasizes that mold issues often stem from leaky ductwork in unconditioned spaces, poor ventilation, and high humidity, leading to compromised air quality. Instead of cleaning mold, he recommends removing contaminated materials and improving source control. For HVAC systems, Sean suggests keeping ductwork in conditioned space, using MERV 13+ filters, and installing a ventilating dehumidifier to maintain humidity below 50%. He warns against running HVAC fans continuously, as this can pull humid air into the system, worsening mold issues. He also recommends in-room HEPA filtration (isuch as IQAir or Austin Air) over whole-home air purifiers. They discuss (and advise against) gimmicky air purification methods like UV lights and ionizers, which can create harmful byproducts. Instead, homeowners should monitor IAQ with smart sensors, track humidity, and optimize their home's ventilation and filtration. Sean emphasizes "optimization over maximization"—cost-effective solutions like air sealing, replacing moldy ductwork, and using high-quality air filters rather than full HVAC overhauls. Both Matt & Sean encourage homeowners to prioritize practical, science-backed IAQ improvements for a healthier living environment.Thank you to episode sponsor Mbrico. Matt welcomes indoor air quality (IAQ) expert Sean Harris to explore mold prevention strategies for new construction. They discuss key building science principles, including air sealing, moisture management, and proper dehumidification to prevent mold growth in hot, humid climates like Texas. Sean emphasizes the importance of moving ductwork into conditioned spaces, using AeroBarrier and AeroSeal technology, and installing dedicated dehumidifiers to control humidity. He reveals that 90% of the 140 homes he inspected in 2024 had mold in the ductwork, even in new homes, due to poor moisture control. Sean recommends dedicated return and supply duct configurations for dehumidifiers and suggests a separate attic dehumidifier for homes with spray foam insulation. Following up on the last 2 episodes, I am continuing on with our mini-series here on air filters and toxic mold. On today's episode, I'm interviewing Edward Brahnam. Edward Brahnam is a product research and development executive in a Fortune 100 company. For the past six years, he has been focused on the biology, chemistry, and physics of how to remove harmful contaminants from the air in a consumer & indoor setting. Together with his wife, Lynne, they have started their own company, Optimal Indoor Air, to apply what they've learned about healthy air quality to help those in critical IAQ situations - including those suffering from mold toxicity. As Edward and his wife, Lynne, navigated the messy and uncharted path to healing Lynne from mold, they discovered one tool that has become indispensable for them: the Hi-Tech Air Reactor. With a background in legal and a keen nose for sniffing out false claims and bad science, Lynne and her scientist-engineer husband Edward are breaking down the science behind and legitimacy of the Hi-Tech Air Reactor.Whether you've been with us for the past 2 episodes learning more about Hi-Tech Air Reactor and it's life-changing power against mold, or you're simply doing more research on the best air filter for mold, get ready. On today's episode, we're diving into all things science behind what I'm calling the best air filter for mold - the Hi-Tech Air ReactorI hope you love this episode as MUCH as I did and that, if you're a science-nerd like me, that the information Edward brings today fascinates and encourages you as you seek to better understand how to heal from mold. Designer Desiccants, Molecular Filters, and the Prospects of Dehumidification

The Building Science Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 4, 2024 66:03

What is the future of dehumidification? Turns out this simple question opens up an exciting view of the future of IAQ generally. The goal of a low energy method for removing water molecules from a flowing airstream boils down to some way of identifying, grabbing and holding onto them. Essentially we are talking about a designer desiccant or molecular filter that lets the air pass through while it filters out water molecules. If we can do this, the next logical question is “Why stop there?” Why not identify a broad range of pollutants and contaminants in the airstream and also select and remove them as well? Enter metal molecularly sensitive filtration based on Metal Oxide Framework (MOF) technology. MOFs are a type of advanced material that scientists are developing to tackle a wide range of challenges, from clean energy, to environmental protection via direct air carbon capture (DACC), to health and drug delivery.. While the name may sound complex, the basic idea behind MOFs is relatively simple—they are materials made by combining metal ions (like zinc, iron, or copper) with organic molecules to create a kind of 3D structure that is highly porous, meaning it has lots of tiny holes or cavities - and they operate as a molecular sieve or filter. Join Kristof as he interviews Todd DeMonte of Madison IAQ to unpack the future of dehumidification and learn about desiccants, and the potential for metal oxide frameworks. Along the way we learn whether the “good old” compressor-based dehumidifier is likely to remain the preferred and appropriate approach for many years to come. This is an episode that will bring you up to date at this important edge of the industry. Today we will talk with two experts on IAQ in schools about the magnitude of the problem in American schools and what can be done. In recent years, comparative risk studies performed by EPA's Science Advisory Board (SAB) have consistently ranked indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health. Most people are aware that outdoor air pollution can impact their health, but indoor air pollution can also have significant and harmful health effects. EPA studies of human exposure to air pollutants indicate that indoor levels of pollutants may be two to five times — and occasionally more than 100 times — higher than outdoor levels. These levels of indoor air pollutants are of particular concern, because most people spend about 90 percent of their time indoors. Some of the consequences of poor indoor air quality in schools are: increased long-and short-term health problems for students and staff; spread of airborne infectious diseases; degraded student learning environment, which affects comfort and attendance.

This episode dives into an interesting and pragmatic discussion about how HVAC contractors can better balance their workload throughout the year. Kevin from Haven shares insights from observing HVAC businesses across the country and how some are taking a more strategic approach to triaging work. The main idea is to get systems up and running in the peak summer months when demand is highest, while also collecting data and making notes for more in-depth commissioning, ductwork upgrades, IAQ improvements, etc. that can be tackled in the fall "shoulder season." The hosts discuss the market forces that drive the typical reactive cycle - consumers waiting until systems fail to call for service, companies prioritizing new equipment installs when demand is high to boost revenue, etc. However, they propose a model where contractors are more proactive about maintenance, communication, and expectation-setting. Install the right-sized equipment over the summer, document issues to revisit later, use data loggers to analyze system performance, and then circle back in fall/winter for comprehensive commissioning when there is more availability. This allows delivering better quality work while smoothing workload across more months. The episode covers several key points and considerations, including: Prioritizing load calculation and properly sizing equipment upfront Deploying IAQ monitors to identify issues like humidity control Offering full-scope solutions and letting customers decline unneeded services Shifting technician roles seasonally between installs and commissioning Developing standard workflows and checklists for each phase Potential business benefits like retention by providing growth opportunities Overall, it presents a balanced, practical approach for HVAC businesses to improve quality, reduce stress during peak seasons, and keep technicians engaged through varied work. As Kevin notes, it's a model more contractors could adopt with training and open-sourced best practices.   If you are interested in the workflows discussed in the podcast, you can become a HAVEN pro today at https://pro.haveniaq.com/. As an HVAC mechanical contractor or engineer, you understand the critical role indoor air quality (IAQ) plays in the health and comfort of building occupants. One of the significant challenges in maintaining optimal IAQ is controlling humidity levels. High humidity can lead to various issues, including mold growth, condensation, wood rot, and increased susceptibility to sickness and allergic reactions. Addressing these issues effectively requires advanced and precise humidity control solutions. The Challenge of Humidity Control Traditional cooling systems often struggle to manage humidity effectively, especially when moisture removal is critical. These systems are typically designed to meet dry bulb temperature setpoints. Once these setpoints are reached, the cooling system shuts off, halting moisture removal. This can lead to issues such as moisture re-evaporation from the cooling coil back into the air supply, causing relative humidity to rise again. This is where innovative approaches to humidity control come into play. By integrating advanced technologies like the modulating hot gas reheat system, HVAC systems can provide precise and efficient humidity control, ensuring occupant comfort and energy efficiency.

Bryan and Kevin discuss indoor air quality solutions in terms of healthy air supplements vs. pillars of IAQ, drawing an analogy between IAQ supplements like electronic air cleaners and fitness supplements. They talk about why discussing these supplemental products can be controversial since many companies profit from selling them. However, the fundamentals of good IAQ - ventilation, filtration, and humidity control - are proven to work well, just as diet, exercise, and hydration promote good health. Most contractors focus more conversations and training around supplemental IAQ products versus the fundamentals, which parallels how society embraces fitness supplements over proper diet and exercise. However, a growing group of homeowners want real solutions, and the fundamentals often solve problems better and with less risk than just adding devices. Measuring IAQ and using data-driven diagnoses lead to more targeted solutions, too. The fitness analogy applies well - you don't jump to supplements first, and adding more supplements isn't always better or healthier. Dosage and application really matter. Contractors should consider focusing 80% on IAQ fundamentals over supplemental products to best serve customers.
