The breaking point of Manitoba's health care system takes center stage today as Dave and Tyler open the Loud Line to a flood of frustrated Winnipeggers. From 10-hour ER wait times to the "grey-listing" of St. Boniface Hospital, the guys air raw, unfiltered stories from the front lines of a system in crisis. While the provincial government promises "Extended Hours" clinics, the public has a different story to tell. On the lighter side, the guys tackle the bizarre "Nature Calls" beer made with bear scat, the 11-1 odds the Winnipeg Jets face as they return from the Olympic break, and a shocking baseball bat incident at Unicity that has the city talking. Plus, a look at the "dementia villages" coming to the U.S. and Winona Ryder's big move to the cast of Wednesday.
On today's episode, Hal is joined by Tony Mariani, a Winnipegger stuck at Puerto Vallarta airport. Later on, Hal speaks with the legendary Bob Irving covering all things sports and the show wraps up with Claire Newell from travelbestbets.com about the travel situation to and from Mexico.
You know the feeling. You're unsure. Stuck between two choices. The imposter syndrome is bubbling up, and you just need a little help.So who do you turn to for advice? And how likely are you to take it?This week on Now or Never, we're sifting through the opinions, mantras, and clichés, to find out what works (and what doesn't) when you get and give advice.Ify and Trevor call up the Winnipeg senior citizens behind the Misericordia Place Life Advice Hotline, for tips on love, dating, and moose hunting. 1-800-wisdom at your fingertips! For the past six years, Farideh Olsen has been recording voice notes full of advice for her 10-year-old daughter, just in case she dies. Farideh is completely healthy, but her biggest fear is that she won't be around when her child needs advice, so Farideh is leaving lessons for her baby, including how to deal with her dad. When Amanda Oake was feeling stuck in a rut working as a nurse manager, her best friend Krista told her to quit her job and buy a bee farm that was up for sale in western Newfoundland. So, Amanda did…despite knowing next to nothing about beekeeping. Years later, does Amanda regret taking her friend's advice so quickly?Julie Gordon, in Victoria, has always had a hard time making decisions. She would call on her friends, look for advice on the internet and when that didn't work, she started to visit psychics. A few years ago, that search for guidance and reassurance let her down a path that cost her thousands of dollars and derailed her life.Ten years ago, former Olympian and founder of I Challenge Diabetes, Chris Jarvis, tried to push himself to do a 160km ski marathon in Quebec; but problems related to his Type 1 diabetes meant he couldn't finish. Now he's challenging himself again, and pushing past all the bad advice he's received throughout his athletic career, about what's possible for someone with diabetes.Plus, Winnipeggers weigh in on the best and worst advice they ever received, and what they'd tell their younger selves.
It's Free-For-All Friday. With the Winnipeg Jets on their Olympic break until February 25, when their season resumes in Vancouver against the Canucks, is this three-week pause good for the Jets — or bad? They sit 11 points out of a playoff spot with 26 games remaining. What's the best-case scenario down the stretch, and how quickly do you expect a sell-off to begin? Seth Jarvis was selected over Mark Scheifele to replace Brayden Point, who will miss the 2026 Milano-Cortina Games due to injury. While everyone at Jets @ Noon is thrilled for Jarvis — a Winnipegger getting the call — it's fair to wonder if there's anything Scheifele could possibly do to crack this roster. Or is he simply out of favour with Team Canada's decision-makers? All that and more on today's edition of Jets @ Noon. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Tyler Kroeker and Paul Beckta are Senior Economists within the Chief Administrative Offices. Paul looks at big-picture trends like trade and the economy. Tyler focuses on smaller scale issues like roads and land use. Together they provide data to elected officials and the public service to inform their decision-making. While they dream about ideal data sets, they also discuss why it's hard to measure things like "vibes." Tyler and Paul cover how Winnipeg's location affects its economy. They dig into the city's steady growth and affordable housing. Paul confirms that Winnipeggers love a deal. And Tyler caps off the interview with a handful of reasons why Winnipeg is a great place to live. This podcast is recorded in Treaty One Territory, the home and traditional lands of the Anishinaabe, Ininew, and Dakota peoples, and in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis. Episode 36 features a Lesson in Journalism, explaining how the CBC spread misinformation to undermine Coun. Cindy Gilroy for daring to table a motion suggesting kids need protection from homeless encampments. "Winnipeggers split over councillor's call toban encampments in outdoor places where children gather"First they manufactured the illusion of dissent by citing only one woman, who was not even asked if she had children. Then the CBC "journalist" falsely portrayed camping on city property as a legal right of the homeless that was being threatened by Gilroy's motion. As you'll hear, it's among the many things that are against the law in Winnipeg parks that the city tolerates and that the police don't make arrests for, making a mockery of the claim by Homelessness Minister Bernadette Smith:"We will continue to work with police and community partners to protect public safety around child friendly spaces."Nowhere in the story was a single resident of the areas like Point Douglas, Assiniboine Avenue or Waterfront Drive where children are at risk from illegal homeless encampments spoken to, nor were words like 'explosions', 'weapons', or 'chop shop' used. Along the way the CBC reporter shifted the issue from public safety to a lack of housing, allowing the usual suspects to say whatever they wanted without challenge. On TGCTS, you'll hear the questions that needed to be asked. In response to the CBC report, one of affected residents stated, "The Mayor seems more concerned about being sued than enforcing existing laws.”Part 1- Marty quickly reviews reaction to his Winnipeg Sun column, Wildfire evacuees straining critical Winnipeg emergency services https://winnipegsun.com/opinion/columnists/gold-wildfire-evacuees-straining-critical-winnipeg-emergency-serviceBurnout, the first responder told me, is becoming endemic, and exhausted crews are refusing to pick up more overtime shifts. When shifts aren't being covered, whether due to burnout, illness, or injury, vital life-saving equipment sits idle. “It's not an uncommon occurrence to be down 8–10 fire trucks overnight. Even ambulances are left in the bays because of no staff.”7.20 Part 2 - Hear our analysis. of the CBC story. It is a good example of the media making excuses for the criminals intimidating the community and not holding the responsible officials accountable, instead of listening to the communities asking for protection. -------Our Season Six Support Campaign is at $2330. Winnipeggers were shocked to see the Winnipeg Free Press recommend a July 1st event that is anti-Canada- and the anti-cop background of the headline act added to their ire.Part 1- We received a kind note from a former NDP MP about our last two episodes paying our respects to the late Coun. Jason Schreyer.6.35 Part 2 - "It wouldn't be a Canada Day party without an anti-Canada Day party" wrote the Free Press, in an entertainment brief listing various events taking place through to July 1st. The headline read: "What's up: Canada day, Countryfest, Public Domain, Art of Bonsai" and then the kicker- "F@&% Canada Day". Episode 31 provides a history lesson on the rap crew called Winnipeg's Most that's the feature attraction on the show. You'll hear about the controversy in the Manitoba election in 2011, when we broke the story of Premier Greg Selinger posing with the now-reunited crew- and the message it sent to law enforcement officials when the man responsible for ensuring the public's safety held their bandana while grinning like a chump. We also review the criminal records of the crew up to 2011, and the shocking ratio of convictions to dropped charges tells you everything you need to know about how soft on crime Selinger's NDP was. Then, an analysis of the outrage about the Mountain Avenue braintrust wrapping themselves in the maple leaf trumpeting their "Canadian journalism" for months to sell their product, while promoting a concert that will decry our nation. Elbows Up, indeed.26.25 Part 3- Marty Gold explains why, with over four decades of experience analyzing and investigating public affairs, his reports on ActionLine.ca and the Winnipeg Sun are a vital part of the media landscape in our city. It's a pitch for your support for the Season Six fundraising campaign, which is now over $1900 thanks to two small business owenrs who support our work for the community. In Episode 27 you'll hear the details of two late-week public affairs developments we've led the way on - the Winnipeg Metropolitan Region's failed attempt to strong-arm Rural Municipalities into supporting their power grab; andthe forbidden solution for bus driver safety.Part 1- The NDP passed Bill 4, which gives dissident members of the Winnipeg Metropolitan Region (WMR) – a way to exit the organization. It's now being more formally referred to as the Capital Planning Region (CPR) to try to get the public to forget it's led by the same elected politicians that mocked and insulted them for daring to have questions about their vaunted Plan20-50.By coincidence, Marty Gold returned to Niverville to host a sports event on Saturday and heard some reflections from locals on how Plan20-50, fell apart before a public hearing in their town even started. The WMR by-law would have given Mayor Scott Gillingham a veto over the development, planning, zoning and agricultural rules of all the other 17 municipalities.Outraged citizens complained about an incomplete and jargon-filled document many felt was ramming through a UN / 15 Minute Cities agenda with fake public consultations and a sleepy press keeping the public clued out- until Marty explained how Gillingham could stop it. And now, the first brick is about to fall from the WMR empire. Listen to the proposal being put before the City of Selkirk council to leave the Plan20-50 crowd and the reasons why. (Related- Oct 7 2024- Browaty Says Plan20-50 Problems Started With Pallister )We describe how Wab Kinew's “Freedom Bill” has a few tricky procedural hoops, and some unfinished business between Selkirk and the WMR.15.00- “Et Tu, Winnipeg?” We explain why Mayor Gillingham and City Councillors are going to have to hold a very public discussion about the WMR before the next municipal election. That means tell taxpayers where they stand, and listen to the people about whether or not elected politicians wanting to be “just like the GVRD” and become centralized planning overlords is in the best interest of Winnipeggers.******* We continue to reveal key details behind the headlines with sharp insightful reporting - please chip in to the Season Six $10,000 funding campaign at https://actionline.ca/2024/02/donate-2/ ********24.30 PART 2 – The city has $2.7 million to spend to develop, produce and install full barriers to shield transit operators from ever-increasing violence. You'll hear Marty describe what that can be like- because he went through it in the late 1980's as a driver representative when cabbie murders spurred a Manitoba Workplace Safetycommittee led by Prof. Wally Fox-Decent to explore taxicab shields.“It's a crazy world out there and … this council is focussing heavily on improving transit, and we want our drivers tobe safe,” Coun. Janice Lukes said. As chair of Public Works, Lukes all-in on bus driver safety- but silent about protecting bus riders. 32.35- Unspoken by Lukes or even the ATU local 1505, is theacknowledged reason behind 90% of Transit incidents. But just like lawbreakers who panhandle on roadways and panhandle at night, violence-minded fare skippers also don't face the music. 35.40- What is the “fare evasion prevention strategy”? OnlyTGCTS has the disappointing details from City Hall.Estimates of revenue loss from scofflaws is between $6M and $10M a year. Instead of trying to collect from the noted cheapskates, and keep freeloading troublemakers off the buses, Lukes wants to spend another $2.7 Million tax dollars on safety yet let them continue to ride for free to drink, inject drugs, smoke crack, and horrify and intimidate students, seniors and new Canadians who won't be protected by a shield.Recent columns in the Winnipeg Sun:https://winnipegsun.com/opinion/columnists/gold-panhandling-returns-to-forefront-as-safety-concerns-grow-in-winnipeghttps://winnipegsun.com/opinion/columnists/gold-oseredok-becoming-a-cultural-hub-in-east-exchange
This week's episode was recorded in front of a live audience on Feb. 7th, 2025, at Cinema 21 in Portland, Oregon. Beloved composer, musician, and iconic actor PAUL WILLIAMS joined us to discuss the film we screened that night, PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, as well as his impressive and long career in film and music. Paul talks about his experiences working with director Brian De Palma, juggling acting and composing songs for fellow actors William Finley, Gerrit Graham, and Jessica Harper, his stylistic influences for writing the soundtrack, the joy in playing a bastard like Swan and even how Phantom eventually found an audience with the help of some dedicated Winnipeggers. He also shares fascinating stories about his prolific work output, including composing for Jim Henson, how Burt Reynolds got the idea to put him in Smokey & The Bandit, writing songs for the Carpenters, Barbara Streisand & Ishtar, meeting songwriting deadlines while touring with Liza Minelli, how it felt when Phantom superfans Daft Punk reached out to him to collaborate on their music, and so much more. And as if that wasn't enough, there's also a live performance from Paul's latest collaborators, PORTUGAL. Taxpayers are ornery after the City of Winnipeg proposed a 5.9% increase to their property taxes. Finance Chair Jeff Browaty joins us in Episode 37 to pitch service improvements that he and Mayor Scott Gillingham say their budget will deliver. 7.15 Part 2- Coun. Jeff Browaty says that while in theory the law requires the city to have a balanced budget, escalating costs like overtime for firefighters and transit operators have wiped out the rainy day fund. While his budget proposes $41M in savings across departments, "if we don't have enough revenue, we're going to have to start closing down the amenities people appreciate." Browaty addresses raising transit fares, new payment options, and 311 wait time improvements, but admits, "it's ridiculous that there's certain things that are failing residents and it's unacceptable." 14.00- Browaty confirms the poll Gillingham cited as proof there's support for the budget only surveyed 400 people, in a city of over 800,000. With affordability an issue, raising taxes was "the last thing we wanted to do" but other levels of government benefit from inflation while "fire trucks are being purchased in US dollars." 17.40- Marty asks why city councillors aren't tightening their belts with wage or ward allowance rollbacks. Browaty airs some criticism of the spending of other council members. To Donate via E-transfer, Cash and Cheque contributions, Ads & Sponsoring segments, please Email - Martygoldlive@gmail.com 20.05 Part 3- Former Mayoral candidate Don Woodstock sent an email to council members on December 9 about the City needing a DOGE approach to reduce the cost of civic governance. Listen to Browaty explain a new process that will "drill down into the nitty gritty" on "big cost departments", to find more government efficiencies, such as lowering fleet costs. 23.15- "Nothing's off the table" for consideration, including Woodstock's proposal for the city resuming operation of an aggregate recycling program. Browaty is asked about Don's other proposals, like pulling performance bonds on errant contractors- "we should probably better stay on top of it." 25.00- The North Kildonan councillor had asked to appear on TGCTS in October (a top 20 episode) to warn Winnipeggers that water and other costs and fees were spiraling out of control - we ask about the North End Water Treatment Plant. He mentions other projects including Centreport and Parker Lands/Rapid Transit. 28.40 - What's going on with spending another $1.2M on Goulet? "I'm not sure because Goulet I think was basically completed. " When asked if it could be the installation of an unconsulted bike lane, Browaty spoke about his view of the misnomer of winter cycling- "I believe it's a waste"- using seasonal infrastructure, where new lanes should go- and where they rank as a spending priority. He gives a history lesson of the booddoggle of the Assiniboine bike lane in 2010. 33.10- We asked Browaty if money refendums could bolster public confidence in civic democracy. He explains why he agreed to postpone the blanket Fourplex rezoning hearings. * The Season 5 Funding Drive is within $700 of the target- use the Donate tab to contribute today! 38.10 Part 4- A review and updates on Marty's Sun reports and columns, and audience comments, including- 47.00 Evidence safe consumption sites bring more crime and disorder can't be ignored https://winnipegsun.com/news/local-news/gold-evidence-safe-consumption-sites-bring-more-crime-and-disorder-cant-be-ignored 49.00 Lukes' Christmas gift to Transit scofflaws- keep ridin'! https://winnipegsun.com/news/local-news/gold-lukes-christmas-gift-to-transit-scofflaws-keep-ridin You'lll hear about Ottawa's ticket blitz on freeloaders, with over 1900 fines issued. 55.15 Living Near Jubilee Station Risky for Women and Kids https://winnipegsun.com/opinion/columnists/gold-living-near-jubilee-station-risky-for-women-and-kiids Will Coun. In Episode 35 you'll hear the story of our big scoop in the Winnipeg Sun, getting word out of the location of the NDP's planned "Safe Consumption Site". It ruined their attempt to stage-manage the public consultation process and divide the Point Douglas community. The controversy continued to play out today but with the cat out of the bag, Premier Wab Kinew is desperate to maintain control of public opinion and squelch opposition. Part 1- Readers and Listeners across Manitoba continue to voice enthusiastic support for the style and content of our efforts to get right down ta' business and tell it like it is at City Hall and at the Legislature. You'll hear some comments and insights into the issues we are covering for the community. There's also a brief review of our Sun analysis last Sunday after we discovered the City of Winnipeg has no data about how many free needles are given out in Winnipeg, and how many dirty rigs are tossed onto our streets and parks, spreading danger and disease. https://winnipegsun.com/opinion/columnists/gold-free-needles-how-many-the-city-of-winnipeg-is-hiding-the-facts How can Mayor Scott Gillingham stand up to the WRHA and make sure they make it right? 16.00 Part 2- Marty Gold explains how the Kinew government couldn't keep the location a secret, and why they wanted their "harm reduction" den address kept from Point Douglas residents and property owners as long as possible. The Sun website has the scoop- Safe Consumption Site location not-so-secret any more Learn about the far-left ideology that demotes public safety and the role of affected residents in the consultation process, and bestows special status on strung-out drug addicts. That's one big reason why there's almost no restaurants open for late night customers, affecting the quality of life for all Winnipeggers. The Point Douglas Residents Association has voiced not only concerns about the possible consequences of a magnet for drug users in their neighborhood, but say that this situation reveals a weakness in the representation available by their MLA and on City Council. 31.00- Hear how the rest of the Winnipeg media scrambled to cover the story, with none of them crediting that the Sun broke the news; then you'll hear the lie told by the Health Minister that resulted in our follow-up report today, proving there was serious pushback against her PR campaign. ‘Homelessness is a business': Pushing back on NDP's proposed drug user hub From a reader: "As much I hate to say it, Audrey Gordon was a lot better health minister then Ozuma Asagwara" 37.35- Part 3— More about the relentless siege of 500 Waterfront, with details about the way CentreVenture misled the owner about how the street was going to be "the Tuxedo of downtown"; instead he's had to spend $40,000 to keep his tenants and employees safe. Stolen water, stolen electricity, and meth users staggering into the building and parking lot causing damage and disorder, all of which he's told Gillingham, Kinew and dozens of city offiicals and non-profit managers about. He says it started with Brian Bowman putting his career goals ahead of the public, lest he be accused of "racism" for having law and order imposed on the homeless criminals. He says that the "shooting gallery will turn Winnipeg into Vancouver." 45.50- A Free Press columnist smeared the residents and property owners being concerned about more crime being caused near the planned drug site as spreading "misinformation." What is misinformation, is Tom Brodbeck ignoring the lived experience of people in Vancouver and Edmonton and of folks in Toronto, where a woman was shot and killed in a gun battle between drug dealers outside a user site. What Brodbeck got wrong, is denying that "Harm Reduction" causes harm to the neighbourhoods; what he got right was, Kinew tried to skirt proper and transparent consultation, and may pay a political price for it. The continuation of our interview with St. Vital councilor Brian Mayes has a few surprises for Episode 18. Part 1- A shout-out to our listeners outside of Manitoba and the readers of Marty's column sin the Winnipeg Sun. Hear a review of the impact of recent stories about Plan20-50 as an example of the work supported by our sponsors and donors. 8.28 Part 2- Civic issues relating to public information and consultation, and city staff falling far short of their duty: - Is the city Transportatation2050 plan merely formalizing an existing administration practice to "Design streets with emergency vehicles in mind?" Mayes confirms that even as chair of Community Services, he has "no memory of ever talking about that." He commits to asking how city staff decided there was not a "significant" delay to emergency service response caused by the Goulet bike lane bottleneck. 14.30 - Mayes says it was a "poor" decision by bureaucrats to give only one day's notice about pop-ups at local malls to explain Transportation2050 to the public. (Their excuse? it's not part of the public consultation process so there's no minimum notice required.) He agrees that the purpose of those sessions is to give residents a chance to evaluate the plan and then tell their councilors what they think. The limited times and venues chosen excluded too many Winnipeggers. "You'll show up at the mall? And nobody will spot that (pop-up)... I feel a town hall coming on." Mayes will be focusing on the lack of planning for modifying St. Mary's Road to manage traffic flow. 18.00- Hear Mayes describe: - How planners made assumptions when no money is alloted, wanting to "authorize density on the idea that oh, there'll be a bridge here (to the U of M)... it just seemed hare-brained." - "I voted for a bunch of this stuff under Mayor Bowman's fairly grandiose plans and the bills are now coming due... I think we'd be better off saying we can't afford to do a ton of this stuff, let's revise Our Winnipeg down to a much shorter list." - "The disconnect between the planning and the transportation has got to get better." - Mayes compliments transit planners for paying attention to residents in his ward - The city transportation plan was going to be subservient to the Metro region Plan2050, yet city bureaucrats admitted the WMR plan was only 'alluded' to in the City plan. - Mayes has concerns about water and sewage capacity as housing expands in the city and nearby RMs. "We can all say we want more housing but at the end of the day, we got to have a sewer system that can handle that and I'm not convinced that we do." The Season 5 Funding Drive is at $2905, with a target of $5600. Email Martygoldlive@gmail.com to arrange to support the podcast and ActionLIne.ca today! 32.00- Part 3- Crime and Public Safety update We have the latest on the August closing of 3 convenience stores, in EK, St. B, and the West End. 40.25 - You won't believe the extraordinary measures that retailers are taking to secure snack and grocery items. These closures and security concerns are devastating to the employees and degrade the quality of life for the community. - A trio of intoxicated teenage thugs - armed with a machete and an ax - ruined the lives of a 15 year old boy on Selkirk and an 80 year old homeowner on Pritchard this month. The north end wonders, do these kids have a social worker involved? Maybe Nahanni Fontaine can tell them. The new column in the Sun exposed years of complaints about cyclists and others racing at high speed over the Tremblay bridge into the Archwood neighborhood. Animals have been hurt, and private property damaged. https://winnipegsun.com/opinion/columnists/gold-speeding-cyclists-on-collision-course-with-homeowners St. Boniface councilor Matt Allard did what he usually does when aggressive cyclists endanger the public- nothing. You'll hear an update from Saturday night about the kind of accidents waiting to happen that were witnessed.
An unexpected Episode 14 tells the story of what really happened in Niverville on August 8th, when the public demanded to be heard by a shocked Winnipeg Metropolitan Region board. Interviews and audio help deliver the details about the scene. 6.10 Part 2 - Marty Gold reviews the obvious red flags and how WMR staff completely failed to prepare for the groundswell of public concern. No one should have been surprised the second hearing attracted a bigger crowd than the first one. 9.30 Don Woodstock describes the RCMP on the scene- "the organizers of this event recognized very early when the room was 3/4 full, that there was more people outside than in the room." Hearing chants of "let them in" from those granted entry and "shut it down!" from those excluded, "I recognized this won't go away quietly" and the RCMP could not get them to leave. 13.00 - "They cannot have the meeting inside and have more people outside who want to have a voice." Woodstock criticizes how "all the able bodied men" on the WMR board including Mayor Scott Gillingham took no action and "they let this little lady (a staff member) face that crowd and she was petrified." Helping her address the angered crowd in the lobby he says the WMR "wanted to ram this hearing through until I insisted those people outside are not moving until we move." 17.00 - Hear audio of the announcement by WMR chair Michael Moore of the postponement of the hearing, which dispels fake news it was caused by "incidents". 23.00- While the audience was told the session would be reconvened in a larger venue and 40 days notice would be given, "nobody's making a move" to tell the 300 waiting in the lobby. "Gillingham and all of the mayors and so-called men, if they were leaders, they would have got up and talked to them... if they didn't make a decision inside soon, that would have boiled over. " 27.30 - It was left up to Don Woodstock and Marty Gold to calm the people down. At ActionLine.ca, we show Steinbach Online video of Marty addressing them. 30.00 - "Why did none of them (think) it best to come out and address the crowd?" Woodstock portrays the Mayor as being afraid to deal with concerned Winnipeggers, which numbered approx. 75% of those excluded- "He was the first person at the table to run away." 35.40 - Marty's theory is that the process is set up to make sure Winnipeg council is bound by Gillingham's decisions. Read his call in the Winnipeg Sun last week for Gillingham to hold a referendum at this link. E-transfers, News tip, comments, email: martygoldlive@gmail.com 42.15 Part 3-- A CJOB newscast falsely claimed there were 'incidents' forcing the postponement and then host Richard Cloutier piled on. He said texts from his stooges alleged 'there has been some disruption at this hearing by a group that wants to get all sorts of publicity, not going to give them the publicity they're looking for". Hear why that was all Fake News. 48.00 Failing to sneak the hearing past the public, a compliant media was recruited to parrot the narrative of Metro planners. Is this a harmless plan to boost job creation? They will baselessly try to smear opponents of the bylaw as rednecks, hayseeds and an extremist fringe and the planners as their all-knowing superiors. 52.00- A brief review of the fears in outlying communities- including those not yet part of the WMR club- about how the plan would infringe on their rights. Would CJOB tell their story? 54.00 Hear Patrick Allard's take away - "if they can't plan a meeting how can they plan our municipalities?" With lockdowns making Manitobans more aware of government over-reach, he explains many believe "private entities staffed by government officials should not control municipal bylaws and zoning and planning and development." He calls on the city to advertise the next public hearing so residents aren't kept in the dark. Another City of Winnipeg fake public consultation, and the Premier admits his approved drug-use site will adversely affect the neighbours, are the focus of Episode 8. Part 1- A recap of recent episodes and Winnipeg Sun columns; Marty also notes the passing of two politically-connected matriarchs in the community. Olga Fuga and Katherine Morrisseau-Sinclair both had controversial tenures heading non-profits - Fuga in the 1980's at the Citizenship Council of Manitoba and KMS around 10 years ago at the Native Women's Transition Centre. The saga with Fuga made headlines, while newsrooms scurried away from the KMS controversy in fear of her husband Murray. Later this summer you'll hear more about their obsession with power, our investigations into their actions, and how the lingering ill-will after they left their organizations affected their reputations. Get a copy of Retropeg when you donate to our $5600 Summer funding drive! Email- martygoldlive@gmail.com 14.05 Part 2- "We have a plan to move transportation into the future" announced the City on Monday. But 'TRANSPORTATION 2050: Reimagined Mobility' is based on far-fetched ideological goals like "Winnipeggers make 50 percent of trips by walking, cycling, transit and ride sharing by 2050." In the winter? We call BS. It smells a lot like '15 Minute Cities' and it's tied into a broader plan for the "Metropolitan Region" that shifts decisions about your community to a board of political overlords from surrounding municipalities. As Marty explains, the last thing the urban visionary cultists at City Hall want is genuine engagement with residents affected by their schemes. So, they rig council approval by holding fake consultations. 'Pop-up public events' being held on short notice (barely 24 hours for the event at St. Vital Mall for starters) will supposedly garner public feedback. The locations and schedule - all shopping malls and none on weekends - are designed to exclude working people with 9-5 jobs who would ask tough questions. You'll hear how buried on page 26 is a claim that policies will "Improve speed and avoid delays for emergency vehicles. • Design streets with emergency vehicles in mind". Since City Hall never once consulted with the WRHA or St. Boniface Hospital about throttling traffic flow on Goulet - we call BS on that too. FOR LINKS TO POPULAR EPISODES & WINNIPEG SUN COLUMNS, AND TO DONATE TO SEASON 5 COSTS - CLICK HERE. 27.35 Part 3 - Wab Kinew admitted to CTV that "there will be an impact when you open a supervised consumption site in terms of the next few blocks around it." At the "Safer Consumption Site Announcement" held a few days later, seemingly none of the reporters there mentioned Kinew's concerns about public safety. Neither did the "harm reduction" champions, some of whom instead lamented that the NDP isn't planning to hand out free drugs to users- yet. 38.00 We identify some of the 'experts' steering the project, and review the experiences of people in BC, Calgary and Ontario who deal with the disgusting and dangerous fallout when a drug den is licenced in their neighborhoods. 43.05 - Local reaction questioned how keeping addicts hooked helps anyone but the poverty industry. 51.30- Hear audio of cops in London identifying the diversion of "safe supply" to organized crime rings. Other things never mentioned in media reports about the site, which our analysis indicates will go somewhere near Siloam Mission north of Logan Avenue: No targets for getting addicts into recovery, no explanation how it will get people using contaminated drugs at home and dying to go to the site to have it tested, and nothing about a reduction in discarded needles. But it will create an army of employees who will depend on there being a continuing stream of drug addicts to justify their paycheques- and new dangers for the people who live and work nearby. Coming up- another interview with a City councilor! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

A Winnipeg Free Press editorial derided the residents of Wolseley for fighting City Hall, comparing them to "stereotypical Winnipeggers who staunchly oppose" new policies and are "“notoriously” resistant to change." Sounds like they opposed a bike lane, right? But this time, it wasn't about bikes. This was about buses. In Episode 2 of Season 5, you'll hear about the contempt the newspaper showed for almost 500 concerned residents of Wolseley and West Broadway. (See charts listing their concerns on ActionLine.ca.) Part 1- The contempt starts with the special interest group driving the changes. The Transit lobby demands means the City is "taking the system we have right now and blowing it up and starting over again." For Wolseley that meant bus traffic was aiming where it isn't wanted, risking homes and school kids. A 'Greenway' is no place for a bus. With no routing planned west of Arlington, users there face walking for 20 minutes to get to a stop, in winter, at night. Whose side did the Free Press take? Not the taxpayers or the actual bus users in Wolseley. Their concerns are "cultural obstinancy." The "culture" the Free Press insists taxpayers adopt is that of a group called Functional Transit Winnipeg. It had steered a moderate course under its founder, Joe Kornelson but has taken a radical turn after a former NDP politician from Calgary got involved. You'll hear key background the media- and their own website - doesn't tell you, and you'll wonder why. Then you'll hear what the editorial didn't tell readers about what's at stake. Our reports, interviews and investigations for Season 5 are better than ever- telling the stories the media won't. We earn your support! Help us reach the $5600 summer target by donating here! 16:44 Part 2 - We sample feedback about the meeting, and about the comment of FTU's Brian Pincott- who has lived in Winnipeg for all of 5 years- that the #10 is "the most inefficient route imaginable." Functional Transit Winnipeg and their allies at the Free Press dismissed faked consultation, safety issues, 20 minute walks to a stop, and labeled the residents as luddites. Is that logical? 22.00 Marty Gold exposes how the planners rigged the consultation process after Transit admitted they 'differentiate stakeholders from residents." A previous bike lane audit required the City to treat residents as stakeholders- so what gives? To boot, St. Boniface parents had no idea of the route change. A St. B school trustee laughed it off. 28:04 Forced to re-jig route plans in St. James after Kelly Ryback spoke up, promised discussions with Wolseley users were kaiboshed. One theory: "It would apparently be too disruptive because they are concerned other neighbourhoods uncovering flaws will demand the same." The effect of an Arlington route boundary on seniors, kids and women further west, and whether buses will interfere with emergency vehicles using Arlington south of Portage are valid, vital safety concerns - but not to the Functional Transit Winnipeg lobby group. The media described Pincott's position: 'the biggest challenge for the city is not getting bogged down with individual needs and wants.' Instead, Pincott wants a City hiring spree to plant cheerleaders for the master plan at bus stops. Guess how much it costs? Comments, news tips, Interac donations- martygoldlive@gmail.com The snubbing of people taking time to deal with City Hall was capped off by Public Works chair Janice Lukes. “So maybe it's a year of no transit [in some areas]" No buses for a year? MSM won't explain the impact of her cavalier gamble on going to church, shopping, getting home after basketball practice. "Maybe it's a year of transit on the greenway. It can change after a year.” As Marty points out, it could change on Tuesday at EPC, if councilors develop some backbone and represent the voters and Route 10 transit users, and not the bus lobby. Season 5 kicks off with an in-depth interview with Elmwood- East Kildonan Councilor Jason Schreyer, who takes on bureaucrats, unchecked construction inflation and ongoing City borrowing he says is unsustainable. The 3 term Winnipeg councillor wants a review of the rules around long-term borrowing, especially when it's underwriting infrastructure projects that come in way over budget. “It was not something being talked about regularly” when he was first elected. Now city finances are in trouble. A member of the Water and Waste committee, he also addressed whether the City should be leveraging performance bonds posted by contractors to control spiraling costs. SEASON 5 BRINGS MORE FEATURES, MORE PUBLIC AFFAIRS ANALYSIS AND MORE INTERVIEWS ! SUPPORT OUR $5600 FUNDING CAMPAIGN TODAY! Part 1 - 3:05: "The problem is more and more pressure is being put on municipal governments" since the 1980's, said Schreyer. Council recently voted to finance an extra $23M for a South Winnipeg recreation campus but is draining Happyland Pool over a $100,000 shortfall, which Marty Gold challenged as being unfair to the less affluent St. Boniface ward. "I'm not going to dispute what you're saying," replied Schreyer. "We've got a problem with construction inflation more than any other inflation at city hall.” 9.30- A discussion about contractor performance bonds. How is Council protecting the public interest and who is being held accountable? An example Schreyer has seen first-hand is in our report: Goulet Bike Lane Barricaded, New Lanes A Treacherous Wreck "There should be answers for these questions you're asking." Part 2 - 16.07 - Jason Schreyer notes the media had never once asked him about construction inflation before this interview. He feels that the media contributed to a lack of information for taxpayers “about why costs are going up, increasing all our taxes, fines, fees, levies, and rates at an unprecedented rate and actually reducing services.” The interest being paid on long-term bonds is "not sustainable" and Schreyer agrees that it's time for a review of city practices. Citing the rate of inflation outpacing wages for 30 years, “now we're forced to, relative to the income of Winnipeggers, sell more and more debentures." “I don't feel like its my job to defend the administration or City Hall. Cost overruns happen, (but) we should do a record of how often contractors are actually under the estimates... we should always be vigilant in terms of every single construction contract, yes we should.” Comments, news tips, Interac donations- martygoldlive@gmail.com 22.10- A former Mayoral candidate has raised the idea of the City generating millions by opening an aggregate plant- and Schreyer said there was a good precedent: “I'm very grateful to Don Woodstock for taking up these issues. … back in the day, the city owned its own gravel quarry." Hear Schreyer describe his questions about whether the City selling off its quarries had saved any money- and the stonewall bureaucrats put up. "There is no answer from the administration on this. That tells you what kind of trouble we're in. We can't think, 'if the administration can't give answers that's the end of that'- the opposite is true!” Listen for why Schreyer and Coun. Russ Wyatt just pushed off a proposed housing plan on Dawson Road because bureaucrats were unprepared for their line of questioning. "It's the right thing to do." 26:56 The interview concludes with Schreyer focusing on accountability from City Hall and councilors. "I don't blame people for that concern, I have that concern. Do you think I get my questions answered at city hall?" he states. "There is no accountability on the issue of further debt. Because if you really project it… I don't see how it's sustainable... I'm not here to look at things with rose-coloured glasses on." 28:18 - Episode 1 closes with a recap of Schreyer's major points, and our focus on first-time donors for the Season 5 funding campaign!

How does the time fly? 1984 was an incredible year for Metaldom. The new release racks were filled with albums that are not only all time classics now, but helped shape the Metal world as we know it today. So this week we do a deep dive into that year that was. Apart from the amazing records, there were an obscene amount of mandatory outfits that formed. And there were news events that we still talk about today. Where's our logo sticker covered Delorian??!! In our "News, Views and Tunes", we attend the 40th (!!) anniversay Vader tour and make Terry Butler an honourary Winnipegger. Musically, we crank some Gwar, Repulsion, Uniform Choice, Black Flag, Living Death, C.O.C., Thrust, Piledriver, Messiah, Axewitch, Axekiller, Inhuman Condition, Sharptooth and Knoll. Horns Up!
Matt Galloway talks to Winnipeggers about embracing winter in all its glory, whether that's wandering snowy trails or a game of crokicurl, the Manitoba game that's sweeping North America. Plus, we take a bite of Manitoba's unique food culture, from nips to Fat Boys to honey dill sauce.
On this winter solstice -- the longest night of the year -- we're jumping in with people finding ways to bring light into the dark. As the sun sets earlier and earlier, thousands of Winnipeggers head to the zoo to bask in the glow of 1.5 million Christmas lights. Trevor Dineen joins in the fun and asks kids just how important it is to brighten up the night. Lena Griffin zip ties thousands of lights along a swaying suspension bridge over a wild northern river in her Nisga'a village, to create a dazzling display that honors lost family and friends. In Ausuittuq (Grise Fiord), Nunavut, the northernmost community in Canada, Laisa Watsko shares a glimpse of life in the middle of dark season. Virginia O'Dine, a stand-up comedian on the small town circuit, tries to make sense of the joy and pain in her life, after her daughter's Olympic victories and the loss of her son to cancer. As the sun dips behind the rocky mountains in southern Alberta, Tracey Klettle and Tim Mearns are strapping on snowshoes for another stargazing tour. It's their way of passing along messages from Tim's mom, about the importance of making friends with the dark. Kerry Kijewski shares her changing relationship with darkness as she becomes almost totally blind, and more Now or Never listeners share their solstice traditions and memories.

This week: our second, long-overdue MINI INDIGENA of the season features regulars Trina Roache (Rogers Chair in Journalism at the University of King's College) and Kim TallBear (professor in the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta) as they join host/producer Rick Harp to discuss: • Why we don't necessarily love the idea of a First Nations person as Canada's next top cop • How a few Winnipeggers ain't lovin' some newly-proposed Indigenous names for city streets • Why Kim hates the idea of “Native heritage” as used by settlers • Monthly Patreon podcast supporter Raven asks: “What's your thoughts on the term ‘descendian' (someone with distant Indigenous ancestry or connection) vs. ‘pretendian'? >> CREDITS: “Apoplēssein” by Wax Lyricist; “Love is Chemical,” by Steve Combs (CC BY); “arborescence_ex-vitro” by Koi-discovery
