Nick and Graham talk about the basics of making your own film, or other types of alternative photographic media. This can be done by coating a variety of surfaces, such as glass, paper, acetate, or regular film stock with ready-made emulsions, or with home-brew alternative light-sensitive solutions. They talk a bit in a vague way about ways to make specialized film holders for plates. Making your own media means just about any format is possible, opening up the possibility of building cameras for novel, never-before-seen aspect ratios. Speaking of alternative formats, they also discuss Ilford’s Ultra Large-Format special-order period, which is on now and runs through May 27, allowing people to put in requests for a large number of different odd and large format film sizes, available in 2 or 3 Ilford emulsions. Graham recommends a movie on Netflix about Elsa Dorfman, who ran one of the giant polaroids for many years. http://bsidefilm.com/ Nick recommends looking at some of the many books on Alternative Processes that have been listed on past episodes, and points to the use of traditional photo re-touching oil glazes as a way to fine-tune colors on color prints, as well as to hand-color black and white photos. The boys also mention J Lane and his dry plate side hustle that he sells through Pictographica (https://www.pictoriographica.com/about.html)

John Reuter - artist, photographer, and director of the Polaroid 20x24 Project, returns to the Artful Camera. John has worked closely with a number of well known artists including Chuck Close, Robert Rauschenberg, William Wegman, Elsa Dorfman, Joyce Tenneson, and many others to help them bring their creative visions to life using the Polaroid 20x24 camera. However, John Reuter is an accomplished artist in his own right. This episode focuses on John and his work as an artist. The exhibit John Reuter: Second Impressions, Polaroid Process to Singapore Infrared opened at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre on June 21, 2017, and runs through August 5th. It features 35 20x24 Polacolor Image Transfers created by John. Eight of these images are 4 panel assemblies measuring 42x52 inches and mounted on canvas. While many of the images featured in the exhibit date back as as early as 1988, the show features two new 4 panel pieces created by John in 2017 just for this exhibit. In this episode John talks about the early history of using Polaroid images in mixed media art, and his own pioneering techniques in creating beautiful, evocative images that now line the walls of the Palm Beach Photographic Centre. Photography is by nature bittersweet: a warm moment with a loved one is captured forever, a reminder of an instant in time that can never be repeated. These conflicting feelings are deftly explored in Errol Morris's latest documentary, The B-Side, which traces the career of Elsa Dorfman. Never seeking fame, Dorman forged lifelong friendships with counter-culture giants like Alan Ginsberg, and shot everyone from Bob Dylan to Jonathan Richman. A perfect expression of the challenges female artists have faced without overstating them, the film is a significant departure from Morris's other work. However, when Film Comment Digital Editor Violet Lucca spoke with him the day after the second presidential debate, many of the themes that have run throughout his work—namely, the nature of truth—naturally arose. The director also talks about his upcoming Netflix series, documentary technique, and a few of his dream collaborations with heads of state.
