Mika Horie is a talented artist who is "interested in making the viewer forget about time and cultural differences" based in rural Yamanaka*, Ishikawa. Mika makes beautiful washi paper using traditional Japanese techniques of boiling, stripping, soaking and pounding Gampi weeds into pulp which creates a beautiful washi paper with interesting texture and color variation. https://www.mikahorie.art/ (https://www.mikahorie.art/) Everything about her process is sustainable, circular and in balance with nature. Mika moved to a rural home near a forest where she can harvest gampi weeds, and situated next to the river outside her home where she can use the water for the process. She then pounds the pulp with old Japanese tools and prints landscapes and parts of nature onto the paper exposed using only sunshine. Mika joined the talkshow last year and has published a book and done some exhibitions she will tell us about in this follow-up and catch up interview. Today, on the Art Seeker Stories Podcast 10th Episode I chat to Scottish artist Cat Coulter, who divides her time between Cellardyke, a fishing village on the Fife coast and north London. Here on her artist residency on Art Seeker Island, she describes her imaginary island, as she creates her own vision of ‘Hope'.  Cat's work is a load of old rubbish. Her art practice starts with beach combing. She collects and re-presents found objects, to highlight the impact of our throwaway society on the natural environment. The materials she uses are dictated by whatever the tide brings. Some are natural objects, but most are synthetic items either deliberately discarded or accidentally abandoned on the shore or at sea. Cat uses some of these ugly waste plastics to make cyanotype photograms, making deceptively beautiful but dystopian blue-and-white images, where trash imitates nature.  The viewer may not immediately notice that what they are looking at is actually rubbish. Cat invites the viewer to look again, more closely, and reflect on what they see. Cat aims to raise consciousness and awareness of the increase in plastic pollution, particularly since the pandemic and the proliferation of discarded PPE.Each work aims to create, quite literally, a blueprint for change. We take an incredible journey into a hopeful planet where rubbish is but a thought and a memory of what was, encased in a cabinet, frozen in time and history. The 3 artist  artworks Cat takes with her for company on Art seeker Island are;1. By a woman: Untitled by Dora Maar (the hand emerging from the seashell)2. Of cultural significance: Zellij tiled mosaics (Elaborate geometric mosaics made in Morocco.3. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area, Rose first experienced the desert on a camping trip w/friends. They tent camped in the Black Rock Campground in Joshua Tree National Park and she found it enchanting, beautiful, wild and fun. It was the first time she’d seen a coyote in the wild.   Later, while living in Los Angeles, Rose would come out to the desert to produce photo shoots. She says of that first time back, "The wide open spaces really grabbed me".   We talk about the harshness of mother nature with respect to weather and humans bumping up against the natural environment and witnessing the the circle of life happening up close and in person.   Rose says her decision to move to the desert was two-fold, part of it was the enchantment with the desert and the other part was a personal challenge to see if she could live here.   In this episode, Rose admits second guessing herself after the making the move. Ultimately, she ended up becoming inspired to pick up her camera again and make prints.   Rose got her first camera at the age of seven and her first ‘shoot’ was at a zoo, capturing all the wild animals. The appeal was immediate and Rose found herself taking photography classes as electives in junior high and high school, along with graphic design. After attempting traditional junior college classes - with all the math, history and English - Rose left and attended the Academy of Art in San Francisco to study photography. A class project turned Rose on to the development of magazines, which she found very satisfying. Upon finishing school she took an internship at Detour Magazine and was eventually hired on full time. Rose continues to work in entertainment magazines - it's been 27 years.   Prior to moving to the desert, Rose had begun to reacquaint herself with some photographic printing techniques and her medium of choice became the cyanotype (or some might know it as sun printing). Rose explains the process and if you’re interested in learning, you can sign up for her classes from her website.   The first summer here Rose's skin was so affected by the dry heat she wanted to find something natural to sooth and replenish her skin. Rose discovered how Native Americans used the beloved creosote plant to create healing balms and she began making her own hand balm. You can find the hand salve, body butter, candles and other treats created by Rose at her Etsy shop: Joshua Tree Desert Rose.

Her mother died when she was still a young girl and it was her father, a scientist and the first president of the Royal Entomological Society of London, who encouraged, and enabled, her interest in science. Women were frustratingly denied the option to follow their passions at that time, but fortunately for Anna, she was able to develop her interest in botany, including as a botanical illustrator and then using the Cyanotype process, which was invented by family friend Sir John Herschel. Through her family's standing in society, she was able to attend meetings at the Royal Society where photography and science were discussed, something very few women could dream of accessing.     I am a fan of many things: food, like salami, flowers, like roses, and historical figures, like Joe Louis, to name a few oddly specific things. And this week’s guest happens to fit the bill on those things while she produces some No-Grav Space Jazz as I call it, or Relaxing Bagel Making Music as she calls it. My guest this week is Salami Rose Joe Louis (Lindsay Olsen).    We dig into her music, of course, and talk about her past endeavours as a scientist. Her latest album, Chapters of Zdenka, was released in December, and it follows up her previous releases excellently keeping to the lush sound she’s known for. So dig in for this chat and be sure to check out the music of Salami Rose Joe Louis when you’re done-- you will not regret it. Follow Salami Rose Joe Louis on Instagram, Spotify, and Bandcamp. Follow Nonthelesser wherever you wish! The music in this episode was all produced by Salami Rose Joe Louis:Intro - I Miss You So18:55 - Are You a Glacier?29:05 - Cyanotype of Blue46:25 - To Take and to Wander56:50 - Pillows (Prelude to Science Album)Outro - Why Do You Care When I’m Gone

Creative Edge Effects explores ways to add your own borders and edges to your digital and scanned images. From a simple blurred transition edge we progress through a filtered edge and finally to an edge created from a scanned image. This allows the artist to create original and personalized edge effects, even mimicking non-silver processes such as Van Dyke Brown and Cyanotype.
