In November of 2025, I took one of the most unforgettable journeys of my life.  Finally visiting Egypt. From standing in the shadow of the Great Pyramids to photographing ancient temples under the stars, this adventure was so much more than a photography trip. It was a reminder of how small we are in the timeline of humanity, and how powerful it is to experience places that have stood for thousands of years. In this podcast episode,The adventure started with being the Keynote Speaker at the Creo Expo in Alexandria and then moved to the Capital city of Cairo.I'm sharing the highs, the chaos, the moments behind the camera, the lessons learned, and the stories most people never get to hear. Traveling and photographing Egypt challenged me creatively, physically, emotionally, and spiritually in ways I never expected. If you've ever dreamed of traveling the world with your camera, stepping outside your comfort zone, or experiencing history in a way books can't teach you… this episode is for you.Sometimes the greatest photographs come after the greatest adventures.#Egypt #PhotographyPodcast #TravelPhotography #JasonLanier #AdventurePhotography #PyramidsOfGiza #PhotographerLife #BehindTheLens #CreativeJourney #TravelAdventure #StreetPhotography #AncientEgypt #PhotographyEducation #WorldTraveler #PodcastEpisode #PhotographyLife #ExploreTheWorld #VisualStorytelling #TravelStories #Photographers

Send us Fan MailWhat happens when a cancer diagnosis becomes the spark that launches a full-time outdoor adventure career? This week on Hikes and Mics, I sit down with Alec — travel writer, photographer, and the force behind Explore with Alec, for one of the most honest and inspiring conversations we've had on the show. Alec is a two-time cancer survivor and bone marrow transplant recipient whose brush with mortality completely redefined his relationship with the outdoors. From hiking across the Grand Canyon mid-radiation to summiting Mount Whitney on a whim, he turned adversity into a life built around adventure. In this episode, we talk about his first post-treatment backpacking trip with his dad in Sedona, why the hardest places to reach are often the most worth protecting, and what it's really like to build a business around the outdoors — late nights, protein bar dinners, and the Enumclaw Taco Bell included.Alec also takes us inside his most unforgettable wildlife encounters — from coastal brown bears in Alaska to mountain gorillas in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park — and shares the networking tip that changed how he lands major clients like National Geographic Travel.Plus — we break down the biggest barriers keeping people out of nature and what creators like Alec are doing to close that gap.

What does Authentic Travel Photography mean in the age of Instagram and filters? For Bob Krist, it was nearly 40 years of globetrotting with National Geographic and National Geographic Traveler — capturing authentic moments on film in more than 150 countries. In Part 1 of our conversation, Bob takes us back to the Golden days of Travel Photography: assignments that dropped him into big cities and rural back roads with nothing but some rolls of film and a good sense of humor. He shares how he stumbled into former editor Bob Gilka's office with some photographs under his arm, what it was really like to shoot for NatGeo in those days, the challenges of working with film on tight deadlines being surrounded by the world greatest photographers, and why travel photography has always been more about patience, trust, and storytelling than about staging the perfect shot. It's a conversation full of wanderlust, authenticity, and behind-the-scenes tales from someone who's lugged gear across every corner of the globe. And make sure to come back for Part 2 next week — where we dive a bit into Bob's personal life and how it intertwined with his career, his switch from stills to video, publishing his books, and more unforgettable NatGeo stories. Pour yourself a cup, settle in, and let's journey together (plus — it's the episode we had the most laughs recording!). Be ready for it! *****

#586 In Today's Episode of the podcast I chat with YOU as I answer the questions that matter most to photography beginners and enthusiasts who are eager to grow both technically and creatively. This episode is all about addressing real-world challenges that come up when you're starting or growing a photography practice. I share my personal experiences, insights, and favorite tips—especially about balancing a day job with a budding side hustle in photography. I open up about my own journey of building a wedding photography business and the practical strategies I used to manage my time, keep clients happy, and avoid burnout.KEY TOPICS COVEREDStarting a Photography Side Hustle & Workflow Automation - Raymond shares his early struggles balancing a day job with building a portrait and wedding photography business. He highlights the time-saving power of using tools like CloudSpot Studio for automating bookings, contracts, invoicing, and client communication. Key takeaway: automation prevents lost opportunities and allows photographers with limited time to provide a seamless client experience.Editing Style Evolution & Managing Creative Ruts - Addressing questions about losing confidence in editing style, Raymond emphasizes that evolving tastes are normal and even healthy. He encourages experimenting with new edits and using past work to develop a style that feels authentic. Takeaway: feedback is useful, but personal satisfaction with your work is crucial for creative fulfillment.Equipment Choices for Travel, Studio, & Technical Mastery - Through specific gear-related questions, Raymond discusses how to weigh camera options for travel and studio documentation, advocating for a minimalist approach while tailoring choices to the context and desired output. He also offers a deep dive into understanding depth of field and autofocus, demystifying how they interact to produce sharp images. Takeaway: deliberate gear selection and technical competence empower photographers to adapt to any shooting situation.IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS & CONCEPTSDepth of Field (DoF): The range within a photo that appears acceptably sharp, determined by a combination of aperture, focal length, and subject distance. Raymond explains how understanding DoF helps photographers achieve their desired focus in different scenarios, especially when combined with autofocus settings.DISCUSSION & REFLECTION QUESTIONSHow might automating your business workflow free up time for more creative pursuits? What steps can you start implementing now?Have you recently felt dissatisfied with your editing style or creative output? What strategies could help you refresh your perspective? When preparing for a travel or studio shoot, how do you decide what gear is essential versus what might be excess baggage? In what ways has understanding (or misunderstanding) depth of field affected your photography?Sign up for your free CloudSpot Account today at www.DeliverPhotos.comConnect with Raymond! In a world of perpetual motion, there exists a realm of profound stillness—where light doesn't simply illuminate, it transforms. Far from home amid Earth's frozen tundras, time itself seems suspended in crystalline air. In today's podcast, we'll visit these places where time hangs in the balance, and we'll explore the intrepid mix of endurance, patience, and vision it takes to make pictures there. Joining us for this conversation are polar photography specialists Acacia Johnson and Jonas Paurell. From making distinctions between Arctic and Antarctic regions, to learning about the unique challenges involved with photographing there, our polar experts share many valuable insights. In addition to tips about packing and safeguarding camera gear in cold weather climates, we also discuss the importance of managing expectations during such trips, especially when faced with a long wait to see wildlife amid the barren stillness. As Alaskan photographer Acacia Johnson puts it, “… I think going into a trip with kind of a sense of exploration, like the joy of the trip is that you don't know, and it's completely unique to your experience. And whatever you do see is kind of a gift.”   Guests: Acacia Johnson & Jonas Paurell Episode Timeline: 3:37: Acacia Johnson's upbringing in the wilds of Alaska and leaving the area for photo studies at the Rhode Island School of Design in the lower 48. 7:35: Jonas Paurell's youth in Sweden and the impact his first trek to Scandinavian Arctic regions had on his soul. 14:08: The differences between Arctic and Antarctic polar landscapes, plus Acacia's experiences during a winter in Arctic Bay, with no sun for four months. 29:13: Different approaches to storytelling about the Arctic based on subject matter, and capturing an emotion in images that does justice to the landscape. 37:31: The logistics of getting to Arctic and Antarctic locations, and expenses involved with working and living there. 43:19: The Jubilee Expedition Jonas organized to celebrate the 150th anniversary of a legendary Swedish polar expedition to Svalbard. 51:20: Episode Break 51:38: Preparations for a polar expedition and the camera gear Acacia and Jonas pack. 1:00:31: Using a large format camera on polar expeditions, plus managing gear in extreme cold conditions. 1:06:42: Managing expectations for travelers, misconceptions when planning trips, plus different types of vessels used during expeditions to polar regions. 1:16:42: Cultivating an authentic connection to place when photographing polar regions. 1:21:29: The changing ethics of photographing in polar regions, plus findings from Jonas's Jubilee Expedition Guest Bios: Acacia Johnson is a photographer, writer, and a 2023 National Geographic Explorer based in Anchorage, Alaska. Drawn to painterly light and otherworldly landscapes, her work focuses on the environment, conservation, and connections between people and place. Over the past 10 years, she has made more than fifty expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica as a photographer and a guide—always seeking to inspire wonder and compassion for these remote regions during a time of rapid change. Her photographs have been exhibited internationally and have been featured in The New York Times, The Guardian, National Geographic and TIME magazines, among other publications. In 2021, Acacia was awarded the Canon Female Photojournalist Grant, and in 2022 she received the ICP Infinity Award for Documentary Practices and Photojournalism. Jonas Paurell is an explorer, conservation photographer, photo educator, and speaker from Gothenburg, Sweden. One of his most ambitious projects is a 25-year documentation of the Arctic. Through ski expeditions and icebreaker voyages, he has captured both the resilience and vulnerability of Arctic landscapes, emphasizing the fragility of the region and the urgent need for preservation. In 2022, Jonas launched The Jubilee Expedition, recreating the historic Swedish Polar Expedition of 1872 to highlight this region's rapid melting and the far-reaching impacts of climate change. Jonas is also founder of Terra Photography Expeditions, which offers immersive workshops in both Arctic regions and South American rainforests, helping photographers deepen their connection with nature while refining their craft. Additionally, before dedicating his life to photography, Jonas served as a human rights lawyer for the United Nations. Breathe Pictures Photography Podcast: Documentaries and Interviews

This week, The Photowalk steps into another world. I've swapped the familiar footpaths of my English home for the rich tapestry of India, a country that stirs something profound in you from the moment you arrive. The air feels heavier with story, the colours seem to hum, and every turn in the road holds a scene you've not experienced before. India doesn't just invite you in, it wraps itself around you. In this special episode, I travel with nine curious photographers through Delhi and Jodhpur, cameras at the ready, to witness many scenes, including the festival of colour, Holi, where colourful powders of the Spring celebration hang in the air, and the streets come alive.  Alongside co-leader Jason Florio and our Indian guides Shivam and Arvind, I talk photography, travel, and the way India overwhelms every sense: the smell of spice and diesel, the sounds of laughter and rickshaws, the heat, the rhythm, the way that everyday life plays out with a sense of theatre, spontaneous, heartfelt, and unforgettable. Part postcard, part diary, this is your personal invitation to join me and become the Other Traveller. Because next year, we're doing it again. Photographers often talk about seeing with fresh eyes, but India doesn't just give you that. It wonderfully demands it. Links to all guests and features will be on the showpage, my sincere thanks to Arthelper, 3 Legged Thing and LOWA who sponsor this show, plus our Extra Milers without whom we wouldn't be walking each week.
