This week I sit down with Retired Deputy Sheriff Rob Poynter. Rob and I discuss his use of plant based medicine to help address his trauma. Rob shares his journey from the prep work, the experience itself and the after care. We have heard of the benefits of psilocybin therapy in treating different trauma related situations. I wanted to know more and Rob certainly added some great first hand account information concerning this treatment modality. I'll be following up this episode with another, from the Co-Founder / Executive Director of the S.I.R.E.N project, Angela Grahm. Angela leads an organization that helps first responders and veterans  heal through the use of psychedelic medicines . This week John Mattingly and I sit down to discuss "12 Seconds In The Dark", A Police Officers Firsthand Account of the Breonna Taylor Raid. I started off the interview apologizing to John for doing what I think a lot of us do when it comes to incidents that are reported in the media, we believe what we are told. At every turn mainstream media has failed to report the truth and have conveniently replaced it with whatever version supports the us vs them , defund, movement. They run with lies because agency leadership allows them to do so. When lies aren't challenged with the truth, when repeated enough, those lies become facts in the eyes of the public. This week I was honored to sit down with Nick Lavery. Nick was so gracious with his time, the most humblest of men, he and I had a conversation you absolutely don't want to miss. We didn't get into the events of 2013 that shaped his life. We instead focused on his "why", and the lessons he has learned from a lifetime of never quitting. Commonly known as the Green Berets, the Special Forces perform critical missions including direct action, counterinsurgency, foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, and unconventional warfare.In 2013, while deployed to Afghanistan, he and his Detachment fell victim to an insider attack ultimately resulting in the loss of his leg. Following a year of surgeries and initial recovery including the use of a prosthetic at Walter Reed National Medical Military Center, he returned to his unit. Refusing a military medical retirement, Nick set his sights on returning to operational status. In 2015, at the conclusion of a challenging, comprehensive assessment designed to evaluate Nick's abilities to operate, he returned to his Detachment and was subsequently deployed once again to Afghanistan conducting full spectrum combat operations. Nick is considered the first Special Forces operator to return to combat as an above-the-knee amputee.Nick is currently serving as a Special Forces Warrant Officer and is widely recognized as an experienced subject matter expert in special operations, intelligence fusion, mission planning and complex problem solving across all operational continuums. He is also the first amputee in military history to complete the Special Forces Warrant Officer Technical and Tactical Certification course, the Special Operations Combatives Program Instructor course, and the Special Forces Combat Diver Qualification course.Nick's awards include the Silver Star, three Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars, Bronze Star with “V” for valor, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, Army Achievement Medal, the OSS Society Peter Ortiz Award, the Bruce Price Leadership Award, and the Special Operations Command Excalibur Award.Nick is a warrior, leader, speaker, author and most importantly a husband and father of two young boys.Thank you for taking the time to give this podcast a listen. We are starting this year off with an amazing , impactful, dedicated 33 year law enforcement veteran, Doug Shoemaker. Doug has held many high ranking assignments making his way from patrol officer to chief in several jurisdictions. Doug and is currently working in the private sector, bringing his years of experience to industries that serve the law enforcement profession. I had a really great conversation with Doug about leadership, culture, and the role each of us plays in bringing about the change we desire. I spent years developing and prioritizing community partnerships, which ultimately became a pivotal piece of managing the "Journey for Justice," a march held in the wake of the Ferguson protests in 2014. One of the less well known but perhaps more significant outcomes of the Welsh Labour - Plaid Cymru Cooperation Agreement following the 2021 national election in Wales, was a commitment to "Commission independent advice to examine potential pathways to net zero by 2035...". Shortly afterwards an expert group was assembled with former Pontypridd Senedd member Jane Davidson chairing, the Wales Centre for Public Policy (WCPP) providing the research supported by a secretariat from Welsh Government. Three years later, the work has been completed and the 'pathway' reports received by Deputy FM Huw Irranca-Davies. So, what next? This week I sat down with a friend, former four term sheriff of Saint John's County, David Shoar. David is running for Florida State Senate for Dist 7, which encompasses, Flagler, Saint John's, Putnam, and Volusia County. David and I discussed his life of service and his decision to enter the race for State Senate. We discussed leadership and getting back to a time of common sense government. This past week I had the honor of presenting at the 2024 SEFTOA conference. Field training officers from around the country were in attendance.I sat down with Mike Schentrup from Advanced Police Concepts as we discussed each day in review. If we are going to change the culture of this profession it must start with those that are entering it and the first person they come in contact with to impact them is their FTO. The role the  FTO plays is life defining for the newly hired officer. Getting this right can not be left to chance. The conference focused on how we do a better job of taking care of our people but just as important, how we do a better job of taking care of ourselves. Meagan McCarthy, a former San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy is grateful to be alive. A firearm malfunction  would keep the p.o.s. suspect from executing her. If processing that critical incident wasn't enough, the state of California would be there to betray her as well. In California,  jurors that have implicit bias against police officer are allowed to serve on juries. Her constitutional rights violated, she was victimized a second time during this incident with the suspect receiving a  not guilty verdict. Meagan McCarthy could have allowed this tragedy to define her, instead she used it as a call to action. Meagan and I discuss the incident that started this  initiative and how she has become an advocate for our profession.What challenges have you faced that have ignited your passion?More about MeaganAs an advocate, I use my communication and show hosting skills to fight for the rights and well-being of victims and first responders. Steve has had quite an an amazing life, a CEO, corporate influencer, Investor, musical artist, and extreme athlete. Steve turned 70 this year and continues to get after it.
