Max Burkholder stars as the lead of Seth MacFarlane's critically acclaimed series TED, a prequel to the hit film franchise. He plays the leading role of “John Bennet” (the younger version of Mark Wahlberg's character from the films), a good-hearted teenager who is still in his awkward teenage phase. With Ted's help, John hilariously navigates adolescence, dealing with everything from first dates to high school bullies. Premiering on January 11, 2024, Ted launched as Peacock's most-watched original title ever through its first three days on the platform. Burkholder is perhaps best known for his portrayal of “Max Braverman” in NBC's long running award-winning series PARENTHOOD, from producers Jason Katims, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. Here Max raised awareness while portraying a young boy with Asperger's syndrome. After the second episode aired, Asperger's was one of the most frequently searched terms on Google. He also played the lead role in Paramount TV's WHEN THE STREET LIGHTS GO ON for DGA, Oscar, IDA, and Emmy-nominated director Brett Morgen. His notable recurring roles include HBO's IN TREATMENT and BROTHERS AND SISTERS. In film, Burkholder starred in Debra Eisenstadt's hit Sundance comedy BLUSH opposite Wendy McLendon-Covey; and in the title role of BENJAMIN, alongside comedy veterans Rob Corddry, Kevin Pollak and Dave Foley. Burkholder began his career at a very young age in films including DADDY DAY CARE directed by Steve Carr, FRIENDS WITH MONEY directed by Nicole Holofcener, and a starring role in the Michael Bay-produced hit feature THE PURGE opposite Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey. In the world of voiceover, Burkholder has voiced characters on a number of hit series including Amazon Prime's INVINCIBLE, FAMILY GUY, THE CLEVELAND SHOW, AMERICAN DAD and THE LAND BEFORE TIME. Brett Morgen's expressionistic documentary seeks to sidestep the question of "which is the real David Bowie?" and instead sees the creation of his personas as just one strategy used by the performer to craft a life of continuous artistic challenge and innovation. "Reinvention" isn't so much a gimmick used to promote album and ticket sales as it is the inevitable path of a creative life. Oh, and it's beautiful and the music is good. Freak out! In his discussion with Tiller, Brett shares how a speech impediment led him to make documentaries (2:45), determining the visual style for each film (6:25), the making of his 2002 film "The Kid Stays in the Picture" (9:10), the origin of "Moonage Daydream" (18:45), the two-year process of personally screening David Bowie's entire video archive (29:00), how Homer's "Illiad" inspired the structure of the film (37:50), when he knows a project is finished (45:30), and Sean Penn's single note that saved the film (49:20).

DJ C-Minus joins me on this review on Brett Morgen's "Moonage Daydream", an artistic collage of David Bowie's musical career to where it begins at the beginning of his "Ziggy" era. We go a little deep into the film, discussing aspects of the documentary film that's shown by a deep catalog of archival footage that looks great. The film celebrates intimate moments of Bowie, making us feel like we're right there in person and doesn't shy on what to show us. It's a discussion for the fans of Bowie, glam and filmmaking in general. Enjoy.DJ C-MinusIGWebsite#moonagedaydream #davidbowie

David Bowie lived a life of extraordinary creativity and success. It was also a life of controversy, radical changes of direction, and an unceasing desire to push his art to the limits. He was a cultural icon and an artistic genius. How does someone make a film about such a figure? According to the director of Moonage Daydream, and this episode's guest, Brett Morgen, you have to first know your limitations: you won't be able to cover everything so look for the ‘through line of action', the theme that ties all the aspects of the film together. For Brett, the way he displays the through line is by making his film less informational and more experiential, and ‘impressionistic'. In addition to Moonage Daydream, Brett also discusses some of his previous films, including Montage of Heck, a bio-pic of Kurt Cobain, and The Kid Stays in the Picture. He shares a little of his ‘method' approach to directing: to make The Kid he lived with its subject, Bob Evans, for a year. Coming back to Moonage Daydream, we discover how the ultimate origin of the film can be traced right back to 2007. We also learn something of how much the film cost to make. Not in money, but personally. For during the pandemic, a heart condition meant that Brett had to be physically isolated from his family. Ultimately, making Moonage Daydream was an intense experience. But also, one from which Brett was able to learn important lessons. Some he is able to share with Matthew. Others, as he admits, he is still absorbing. Great art has that effect. Fortunately, great artists stay with us to guide us through their work, and David Bowie was one of the greatest of all. I watched every frame, you know, for two years... he was always present, and always learning and viewing each moment as an opportunity for an exchange, for growth.... he was obviously an incredible artist, but there's so much more to draw inspiration from.” – Brett Morgen What is Covered: 00:00 – Matthew introduces this episode's film, Moonage Daydream, and guest, director Brett Morgen 04:32 – Brett discusses how he is feeling following the success of Moonage Daydream's release 05:08 – ‘What is Moonage Daydream' – Brett and Matthew look at what the film is, and is about 07:17 – How the film industry has changed in the 23 years since Brett was nominated for an Oscar for On the Ropes 08:37 – How Brett got involved in the Moonage Daydream project 11:18 – Brett's thoughts on how one makes a film about a ‘cultural icon or artistic genius' 14:27 – Brett discusses how he let Kurt Cobain, Bob Evans, and David Bowie lead him in the making of his film about them 16:02 – The impossibility of living up to Bowie's artistic genius 20:30 – The way in which making Moonage Daydream was an isolated process 24:24 – What Brett learnt about himself in making Moonage Daydream 26:18 – The necessity for creatives to work long hours and living and breathing David Bowie 27:48 – What's next for Brett 30:54 – Brett's view on the message of the film 34:20 – The importance of not trying to fit everything into a film 35:33 – Brett's thoughts on whether it was an advantage that he came to Moonage Daydream as a casual Bowie fan Resources: Moonage Daydream The MovieMaker Podcast Innersound Audio Alamo Pictures Connect with Brett Morgen IMDb Twitter Connect with Matthew Sherwood: Facebook LinkedIn Twitter Connect with Factual America: Facebook Instagram Twitter More from Factual America: Spector – A Legend, and A Murderer Tina Turner: The Queen of Rock and Roll's Untold Story Billie Eilish: A Portrait of the Artist

Rock Docs: A Podcast About Music Documentaries Today's documentary is Moonage Daydream, released in 2022, directed by Brett Morgen. Moonage Daydream is about David Bowie. It was released with the approval of the estate of Bowie, although Morgen was given final cut. The audio was mixed by Bowie's longtime producer and collaborator Tony Visconti. We had to cover the new David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream directed by Brett Morgen. For this screening, we brought on an extra special Bowie super-fan as a guest. To start the episode, we all talked about our deep relationship with one of the greatest musical artists of all time. Then we proceeded into the IMAX theater to witness this loud, trippy doc on the big, big screen. Certainly not your average talking-head interview rock doc, we were treated to a 140-minute spectacle that features tons of amazing Bowie footage and music. We'll tell you all about it, but needless to say it is recommended viewing for Bowie fans!

Screened as part of the DGA's Documentary Series, Moonage Daydream is a cinematic odyssey exploring the creative and musical journey of David Bowie. This film is the first documentary ever sanctioned by the Bowie estate with access to the artist's archives and features never-before-seen footage and performances spanning Bowie's half-century career. The auteur responsible for one of the most talked-about Bowie events in years, Brett Morgen, joins me for this episode of albumtoalbum - the first of a new season! - to discuss the ideas behind, meanings within and reaction to, his film Moonage Daydream. In a wide ranging talk, Brett talks about the acclaim and complaints the film has garnered, why he made it the way he did, why he didn't include your personal favourite Bowie moments and what he might do next. Recorded over Zoom (apologies for the poor sound quality) in September 2022, our conversation was incredibly insightful and answered a lot of questions I had about the film. We only got started when we had to sign off. But despite warning me before tape rolled, that he wouldn't choose his favourite album, he rather sweetly did, at the end. And it was a semi surprise. Please enjoy this episode and let me know what you think!

“I was drowning”. Acclaimed filmmaker Brett Morgen (“Kurt Cobain Montage of Heck”, “The Kid Stays in the Picture”) knew he was in deep trouble creatively when he sat down to write the script for his latest documentary and days stretched to weeks and then months. When your film subject's own creative output is as varied, unpredictable, and brilliant as rock star David Bowie's was throughout his legendary career, the pressure to measure up can be paralyzing. But, eventually, Brett cracked the narrative code, and the result is his remarkable new documentary, “Moonage Daydream”. Following the film's successful launch on IMAX screens, Brett joined Mike and Ken to talk about the emotional rollercoaster of his seven-year odyssey to bring this cinematic exploration of David Bowie's creative and spiritual journey to life. Faced with two visions of how to approach the topic, why did Brett choose the road less traveled — “a non-biographical experiential non-fiction film” — rather than the more linear musical jukebox that would have surely been the easier path? What is the “covenant” that Brett created with the audience? And after experiencing a massive heart attack at the beginning of the project, how did Brett draw inspiration from Bowie and gain insight into how to live his own life? Join us for this wide-awake conversation that is not intended to answer all of your questions about this extraordinary film, but will, hopefully, provoke more questions. That's just how it is with David Bowie… and Brett Morgen. A Neon release, “Moonage Daydream” is now showing in theaters worldwide. There's no formal interviews, no biographical timeline for its subject — David Bowie. Instead, the film is a rapid-fire collage of images, sounds, and ephemera. Animation scenes and film clips that don't seem to have anything to do with Bowie are interspersed throughout the film. But according to Morgen, the film's themes mirror the music and life of Bowie himself: Chaos, experimentation, and fragmentation — a sentiment our critics agreed with on last week's episode. Today on FilmWeek, KPCC's own John Horn sits down with Brett Morgen to talk about making ‘Moonage Daydream,' and trying to capture the essence of David Bowie on film.

Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
51m26s - Notas

Our panellists Karl Delossantos and Rad Simonpillai fill us in on the standout films and highlights from this year's Toronto International Film Festival.
"Moonage Daydream" is a new documentary about David Bowie drawing from millions of assets and tracing the life of the enigmatic rock star. Director Brett Morgen joins to discuss the film, which opens in theaters and in IMAX globally on September 16.
This weekend and next weekend, theaters across the country will be alive with the music of David Bowie. The documentary Moonage Daydream from director Brett Morgen is the first documentary made with the cooperation of the David Bowie estate. This gave Brett Morgen access to David Bowie materials that even the most diehard of Bowie fans have never heard before. In the archives of the David Bowie estate were at least one fully produced unreleased concert film from 1978 and endless numbers of little seen interviews that make up the unusual narration of the movie, in Bowie's own words. Moonage Daydream has been made specifically for IMAX presentation. The sound and the sights have been created with the large IMAX screen in mind and the wrap around, booming sound of the IMAX. We were lucky to speak with filmmaker Brett Morgen about Moonage Daydream on Wake Up Tri-Counties.
When David Bowie wrote “Moonage Daydream,” he didn't actually write it for himself. Yet, the song became the pivotal hinge on which the rest of his ingenious album, 'The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars' swung. A deep cut on the album, it is the title that director Brett Morgen took for the documentary film about Bowie's kaleidoscopic career, and for good reason: when Bowie freaked out in a moonage daydream, we all did after his fashion. Find out why this song is an important star in Bowie's constellation of music in the 100th episode of the Behind The Song podcast. Daniel, Shahbaz, & Anthony review Brett Morgen's MOONAGE DAYDREAM as part of The Movie Podcast's 2022 Toronto International Film Festival coverage. David Bowie had a multitude of personas as a musician, painter, actor, and world traveller. This documentary portrait, told in his own words from decades of interviews, is as bold and visually inventive as he was and screening exclusively in IMAX at TIFF. Moonage Daydream will be available to watch at Ontario Place Cinesphere beginning September 12, 2022 with a release theatrically outside the festival September 16, 2022.
Documentary filmmaker Brett Morgen likes to go into the deep end with his films. He never wants to repeat himself, or repeat any other docs for that matter. He wants his films to be an experiential, subjective expression, not a declaration of truth. All of this makes Brett an ideal director to tackle a subject like David Bowie, which he does in his new film Moonage Daydream. Brett and Marc discuss his work on other docs about Robert Evans, Kurt Cobain, Jane Goodall and O.J. Simpson, and Brett details the near-death experience that made him see the Bowie project differently.
