Join us as we talk through: Why imperfect action beats perfect inaction every single time How ditching mini sessions led to a $1,798 sale (yes, from ONE session!) What finally gave Sarah the confidence to go all-in If you've ever felt too scared to believe this business could work for you, this episode is the proof you need to move forward. SummaryIn this episode of The E-commerce Content Creation Podcast, Daniel Jester and creative director/photo manager turned creative ops consultant Kelly Garthwait dive into a candid, exploratory conversation about authenticity in visual storytelling and the tensions introduced by AI and automation in creative roles. Their dialogue weaves through the influence of social media on brand identity, the importance of consistency in e-commerce visuals, the enduring value of printed photography, and how storytelling creates meaningful connections between brands and audiences.Key TakeawaysAuthenticity is more than aesthetics – it's about coherence, trust, and meaningful storytelling.Consumers can feel when something is off, even if they can't articulate it.A brand's inconsistent tone across platforms (e.g., social media vs. streaming ads) can erode trust and feel “two-timing.”Consistent product photography builds customer trust and reduces friction in the shopping experience.Even subtle mismatches in lighting, angles, or image quality can raise subconscious red flags.Daniel shared HauteLook's strategy of using coordinated color themes to maintain daily visual cohesion.AI can accelerate execution but cannot replace taste or vision. The most successful creative applications of AI come from teams who understand what good looks like and guide the tools accordingly. There's value in observing trends before overcommitting to tools with fleeting hype cycles.Storytelling provides the essential context that transforms content into connection.Visual narratives, recurring motifs, and Easter eggs (like Daniel's Signs of the Zodiac series) offer richer engagement.In-person experiences with printed photography or museum exhibits deepen emotional resonance far beyond screen-based consumption. There's a growing need to reinvest in creative direction as a function that ensures cohesion, especially in content-heavy environments.Creative leadership helps bridge the gap between fast execution (often with AI) and meaningful brand expression.Physical prints offer an emotional and sensory connection that screens can't replicate. Both Kelly and Daniel emphasized the power of printed art to evoke memory, emotion, and a sense of home.Tools like Zapier and automated workflows can relieve friction in production processes. The goal is not to remove creative roles, but to enable them by reducing logistical bottlenecks (like asset review and approvals).CreditsHosted by: Daniel Jester - danieltjester.com
SummaryIn this episode of the E-commerce Content Creation Podcast, host Daniel Jester discusses treating in-house studios as media companies. He emphasizes the need for organizational respect, investment in creative teams, and the complexity of media production processes. Daniel shares insights from recent workshops and highlights the challenges faced by studio teams, including ad hoc requests and sample management issues. He advocates for a shift in mindset towards recognizing the strategic value of creative teams in e-commerce operations.Key TakeawaysEvery company with an in-house studio operates as a media company.In-house studios need robust support and workflows.Creative teams are essential for e-commerce success.Organizational respect is crucial for studio efficiency.Ad hoc requests can disrupt production processes.Sample management is vital for studio operations.Investment in creative teams leads to better outcomes.Understanding the complexity of media production is key.Protecting production time enhances efficiency.Shifting mindsets towards in-house studios is necessary.CreditsHosted by: Daniel Jester - danieltjester.com
SummaryIn this episode, Daniel Jester is joined by studio operations and photography manager Brent Maynard, who shares stories and insights from his unique experience managing photo studios for a major pet brand. Brent dives into the complexities of working with animal talent, from cats and dogs to guinea pigs, birds, and even cockroaches, and explains the specialized studio workflows required to keep animals, handlers, and crew safe and productive. He and Daniel talk about their shared love of optimizing studio layouts, reflect on the importance of removing obstacles for creative teams, and explore how the presence of animal talent transforms everything from set design to crew behavior. It's a fascinating look at the intersection of operational excellence and animal chaos, with a few screaming guinea pigs along the way.Key TakeawaysAnimal talent adds layers of complexity to studio operations, requiring specialized workflows to ensure safety and smooth production.Studio layout changes can significantly improve efficiency, even without new investments. Small shifts in shelving and table placement led to measurable productivity gains in Brent's previous roles.Brent's approach emphasizes reducing physical strain and mental load on creative teams, which often results in better output and less burnout.Studios working with animals must prioritize safety above all else, including airlock-style door systems, species separation, and cautious scheduling.Pet behavior affects production. Even subtle stress signals can compromise a shoot, which is why the pet team plays a critical role in monitoring and interpreting animal body language.Noise and tension on set can disrupt animal performances, so maintaining a calm and low-stress environment is essential for success. The pet team serves as both handler and advocate, ensuring that animals are safe, comfortable, and not being pushed beyond their limits.Animals with professional experience are more predictable, but many shoots also involve non-working pets, which require more patience and flexibility.Unusual animal talent like birds, guinea pigs, and even cockroaches come with highly specific needs. Guinea pigs may scream, birds may curse, and fish are generally not worth the risk due to their fragility.Brent is passionate about studio operations and finding thoughtful, efficient solutions. His experience with complex sets and talent makes him a valuable resource for any production team.CreditsHosted by: Daniel Jester - danieltjester.com

Today's guest fell into an incredible opportunity that she intelligently took full advantage of and has since replicated that with other partners.I'm talking about part-time pet photographer Lisa Olsen who sets up a photobooth at events held by other businesses, especially to gift their clients a free photo of their dogs- and, the businesses pay her to be there! While she's there she's made sure her process encourages the participants to book a full photoshoot with her, and from these events alone she is booking 80+ shoots a year and doesn't need to do any other marketing to hit her goals. She shared the in's and out's for the members, as well as her pricing strategy, but in the free half you'll catch a few tips about these events, as well as Lisa's other photo types and join our discussion about mental health. WE COVEREDPut them to work - pet parents Your website clearly defines the types of sessions you offer: Dog portraits, Puppy Portraits, Puppy Cakesmash, Mommy and me, Family Photos, Celebration of life and Holiday Theme! - Other than being listed on your website, are you actively advertising all these types of shoots at once?Which session type is bringing in the most clients, and importantly most revenue? What happens with the Mommy and me sessionsOne of the best ways I've gotten client referrals in 2024 has been doing Events with Pets. A business will hire me to be the dog photographer at their event. The business (such as dog groomers, pet sitter, dog trainers, realtors, vets…..) will do all the marketing to their current clients and potential clients to come to their event and receive one free photo from me. I'm usually the main attraction at the events so it's been great for brand recognition and client referrals, plus the business is paying me. This has also lead to doing business portraits with pet for those in the pet industry. One of the biggest regrets I often hear people have after their elopement day is that they didn't hire a videographer. Imagine being able to relive those moments for years and years. Elizabeth Kurpanek, a Colorado-based elopement videographer and owner of Embr Films and Ruff and Roam understands this sentiment firsthand. Elizabeth started out as a photographer back in high school but switched over to video in 2015. After Covid hit, her couples began switching to elopements, and that's when she decided to dive deep into that niche. Elizabeth not only shares her journey into videography, but she also talks about why she feels every couple should have a videographer on their elopement day, emphasizing the emotional value videos bring that photos can't provide. She also stresses the importance of collaboration between photographers and videographers. Having clear communication with one another can make the day run as smoothly as possible. In this episode, we chat about: How she got into elopement videography Her favorite elopement so far Why should couples have a videographer on their elopement day? Mastering pet photography is an art that involves much more than just a camera and a cute subject. Laurie Elmer and Knicki Knowlton of Urban Dog Studio have crafted an engaging podcast episode that guides pet lovers through the magic of utilizing light to create stunning pet portraits. This episode is a goldmine for pet owners looking to immortalize their furry friends in photographs that are not just memorable but emotionally captivating.Light is a crucial element in photography, shaping the mood and atmosphere of every shot. Understanding how to work with different lighting conditions can transform a simple pet photo into a masterpiece. The podcast episode begins by highlighting the significance of light and its impact on photography. It addresses common issues such as the harsh midday glare, and why the soft, warm glow of the golden hour is a photographer's dream.Laurie and Knicki offer practical advice that can be applied using any camera, from smartphones to professional DSLRs. They discuss how the direction and quality of light can drastically change the outcome of a photo. For example, placing a subject under a tree might seem like a good idea for a shade, but the uneven dappled light can create unflattering hot spots. Instead, they suggest positioning subjects in open light with a dappled background to achieve a balanced exposure. The episode is not just about instruction; it's about inspiring listeners to experiment with their pets and cameras. The hosts encourage their audience to step outside and play with natural light, capturing emotions and moments without the safety net of editing software. This approach promotes a deeper understanding of photography and the satisfaction of achieving beautiful results in-camera.This episode on pet photography is more than a tutorial; it's an invitation to view the world through a different light, literally and figuratively. By mastering the use of light, pet owners can produce images that not only showcase the beauty of their pets but also convey the bond and affection they share and a newfound appreciation for the art of pet photography.https://www.urbandogstudio.com/See photo example here:https://www.urbandogstudio.com/lets-bark-about-it-tampa-bay/2wjjvikaqmoaxdlf347r3us5ehb1j2Tampa Bay realtor and Dog Lover Leslie Haas Realty One Group Sunshine https://tampabayhomesforsale.realestate Art for Profit's Sake podcast-Discussions with artists at different stages of their business. I've asked many photographers what they'd do to start their business if they moved to a new place.. And today's guest has actually done it. She completely transformed her business from shoot and burn family photography in South Africa, to a profitable, full-service specialised pet photographer in New Zealand. She studied and implemented what she learned in order to make that transition successful and now she's consistently booking clients who typically spend $1800. Above photograph © Ashok Sinha How central is your personal drive and unique creative vision to the pictures you make? If these characteristics strike a chord or are traits to which you aspire, then you won't want to miss our inspiring chats with photographers Ashok Sinha and Anabel DFlux. We caught up with both of these accomplished creatives earlier this year at B&H's 2023 Depth of Field Conference. We begin with architectural photographer Ashok Sinha, whose personal project to document iconic mid-century structures and classic cars in Southern California resulted in the crowd-pleasing monograph Gas & Glamour, now in its second printing. Sinha offers valuable insights about how channeling his passions and not overthinking the details allowed him to bring his photography career to new heights—resulting in his work being displayed as a massive billboard in downtown LA, released as limited-edition NFTs, and featured in gallery exhibitions in collaboration with an international fashion brand. After the break, professional animal photographer Anabel DFlux describes how she fashioned a personal penchant for pets into a sustainable career path while still a teen. Yet, despite her clear passion for and talent with pets, DFlux reaches beyond a single photographic specialty to cultivate work across multiple niches—including the heady realm of rock and roll. Check out these real-life career examples and walk away with an equal measure of inspiration and practical tips. Danielle and Elizabeth welcomed Doreen Laskiewicz of Doreen Photography to the podcast, and they picked her brain on how to get good cat photos. Doreen complied with lots of tips! She also talked about her lifestyle portraiture business and her print magazine, Grit and Goals. One tip Doreen shared was to get at eye level with your subject. Another one is to go for dramatic angles, like looking up or straight down on your pet with the camera. Doreen showed some of her photos as she explained the techniques involved in capturing just the right frame. Taking photos and typical cat behavior was discussed, including favorite cat pics and how many cat pics Danielle has on her phone - she MUST hold a world record for most cat pics on a phone! The conversation went on, if you ever have a question for Danielle or Elizabeth they'll be happy to answer it. They love cats and people, so question away! Of course we want to hear from you, we love chatting with pet parents, the more cat stories the better! We dare you to top Danielle and Elizabeth with stories about weird cat behavior! The simple fact is most photographers don't use LinkedIn and the majority of those who do aren't using it correctly.2022 statistic showed that less than 10% of LinkedIn user profiles are fully optimized and showing up in the searches. Even better for you, only 1% of profiles share content to the newsfeed on a daily basis, purely because most users don't really know what they are doing and how to market themselves effectively on this awesome networking platform. Now, these connections aren't “penny pinchers or freebie hunters” because the average wage earner on LinkedIn brings home $87k per year and over 40% of millionaires use the platform.LinkedIn is the perfect platform to grow a premium brand, where clients book you because they value what you do and NOT because you offered a cheap door-buster offer. This training was originally hosted for Hair of the Dog Academy members ONLY - but we thought that it was so powerful that you should experience it too. In this episode, I'm sharing a conversation with Angela Schneider, the remarkable woman behind Big White Dog Photography and One Last Network. Angela's life, shaped by the companionship of her beloved dogs Shep and Bella, led her to establish businesses that empower women to find their unique place in the world, with their pets by their side. After experiencing personal loss, Angela embarked on a new mission - becoming a certified grief coach and pet loss grief companion, stepping up to fill a gap she noticed in the pet industry. We delve into a truly heartfelt discussion exploring how Angela has discovered profound meaning in her own experiences of loss. We discuss the power of storytelling in her work as a pet photographer and grief educator, and the healing potential of professional pet portraits. Angela generously shares personal, often vulnerable, stories that have shaped her life and career. For all petpreneurs out there, Angela shares valuable insights into the role of pet loss grief counseling in our industry. She shares why joining One Last Network and embracing grief training could revolutionize your service, giving you the tools to support your clients in their toughest times and ultimately, reach more people. This is a conversation that's full of wisdom, passion, and a deep love for pets and their profound impact on our lives. I hope you enjoy it.
Humans and pets have shared a deep bond for centuries, yet our animal companions are now considered more a part of the family than ever. So, it's no surprise that pet photography is a blossoming niche, and a perfect subject for this week's podcast—especially since it's National Pet Month! Above photograph © Nancy Borowick We start by chatting with pet photographer Karen Hoglund, who alerted us to her work in response to Allan's musing about using the hashtag “kittens” to generate traffic on social media. After noting that #kittens only yields a 20 percent bump over #photographer, Hoglund offers advice on the dos and don'ts of posing pets, and picking up on their non-verbal signs of anxiety or stress. After a break, we switch gears from posed pet portraits to learn about Sony Artisan Nancy Borowick's candid editorial-style coverage of the Westminster Dog Show, and her long-term project, “Part of the Pack.” Primarily known for telling intimate stories about people, Nancy explains how an invitation to photograph the dog show helped her process the loss of both her parents to cancer. She talks about the challenges of covering the show's frenetic atmosphere, describing how she maintains focus by seeking out telling details. As we all agree, pets are truly a gift in our daily lives, and learning how to capture their unique personalities in pictures can only deepen this bond and enrich our experience. Nichole Smith and I are still soaring from all the wins we counted at Global Pet Expo, where we re-introduced the pet industry to Animalhaus Stock Photography. Global Pet Expo is one of the biggest pet-industry trade shows and to get in, you have to be either an exhibitor or a buyer. It is seriously exclusive and we were granted access to more than 1,000 pet-related businesses from around the world. The response was overwhelmingly positive! Not only were they super excited about the stock photography available on the site but there was also one big clincher for many of those businesses: our new match-making service where we make it SUPER easy for them to hire commercial pet photographers by matching them with alumni of our Commercial Pet Photography Academy (more details on that soon). As if that wasn't enough, we also invited three photographers from our recent class of Commercial Pet Photography Academy alumni to join us and kick-start their own commercial photography aspirations. Amanda, Angela, and Jennifer were voted by their peers to have the biggest breakthroughs from the course and that's how they got their golden ticket to Global. While there they were unleashed to network with all of those businesses and use the knowledge they gained in the course to go home with huge successes, including some contracts to start negotiating! On today's Hair of the Dog podcast, Nic and I take you behind the scenes of Global. We chat about all those wins and the future of the commercial pet photography industry. Lisa Asp has been making photographic art since 1995 but became a Certified Professional Photographer in 2010. In 2011 she decided that pet photography was what she really wanted to specialize in, and she hasn't looked back. Listen as she shares her story, what she's doing to help rescues in her area, and what makes the Animal Image Makers Conference the best in the industry. Prior to specializing in pet photography, Lisa was truly a jack-of-all-trades photographer. She loved creating artistic photographs and sharing them with her clients. But she has always had a special place in her heart for animals. She started donating her time to professionally photograph pets at animal shelters and rescues and became instrumental in helping those animals find forever homes. Little known fact, professionally photographed animals are significantly more likely to be adopted. One of the other things Lisa loves is community and helping others in their own photography journeys. Which is how the Animal Image Makers Conference came to be. They started it in 2019 and almost sold out all of the tickets. They have international speakers come in to share their knowledge and expertise, but most importantly of all, they've truly created a community for pet photographers to call home. If you've been considering pet photography for your business, you will not want to miss out on all of the brilliant tips and tricks Lisa shares. Even if you're NOT looking to add pet photography to your business, Lisa knows her stuff and the things she shares can be applied in so many ways. Listen in to learn all about Lisa, the Animal Image Maker's Conference, and what you need to do if you want to make pet photography your main offering. In This Episode: [02:12] Learn about Lisa and how she found herself delving into pet photography and education. [05:20] How did the Animal Image Makers Conference come about? [09:18] Lisa shares her tips for starting and running a successful pet photography business. [17:35] What kind of advice does she have for dealing with dogs who aren't well-behaved? Love of a pet inevitably turns to grief upon their passing. We each struggle to fill the hole in our hearts that they leave behind. This show discusses how an end-of-life photography session may help memorialize and celebrate our pet's life. Listen as Lauren Kennedy shares the story of how her offer of taking photographs of a dog at the end of its life became a world-wide network of over 1,000 photographers offering these same services, often for free. The Tilly Project, named after Lauren's cat, Tilly, who died unexpectedly, aims to connect pet owners with end-of-life pet photographers and provide accessible, educational, and supportive resources for photography, anticipatory grief, and pet loss/bereavement. The beautiful, and often intimate, photos capture the love and enduring relationship between the pet and their family. They are not sad, but poignant and powerful - evoking familiar feelings in all of us - to be cherished forever.Find The Tilly Project website here.Find The Tilly Project: End-of-Life Pet Photography Network here.Find The Tilly Project Facebook Page here.PetAbility is sponsored by Dr. Buzby's Toe Grips to keep your dog from slipping. 161 - Consider me a CloudSpot fangirl. In the two years I've been using the gallery-delivery software, it's become an indispensable part of my business.
