Marcus has been working in the studio since her started as a photographer. His hair and fashion work was both in home studios and in larger professional studios. But what he learnt from this experience is that a large studio isn't really needed. Sam asks if it is worth a photographer hiring a studio to experience what it's like to use a big studio. Marcus says it's hard as they are so expensive. But he says you can do a lot at home. Marcus's home studio is 4m x 5m and is a spare room. He has shot up to 5 people in the room at the same time. He is going to break the show into three sections: 1. Backgrounds 2. Lighting - See our other show on lighting here 3. Lenses – See our other show on lenses here Backgrounds: Paper backgrounds have been traditionally used by photographers. They are great if you have lots of space. Over time they get creased and damaged. In a big studio there is no problem as the subject can be a long way from the paper so the imperfections in the paper can't be seen. But, this doesn't work in a small studio. So instead Marcus has painted one wall a mid grey as an alternative backdrop. As it's a flat surface with matt paint he can get the subject really close to it. It is also easy to change the background to other colours using photoshop. Marcus also paints a 6ft by 3ft board and paints it the brand colour of his client. He simply hooks it up against a wall. Marcus has a second wall that is great so he can use the corner in his shots. Lighting: Marcus recommends investing in a C-Stand. This is a heavy duty lighting stand with a boom arm attached. That means you can be much more flexible with where the light is placed. These stands fold away when not in place. In terms of lighting Marcus says it's quite flexible. It depends what you are shooting, people, food, products or other things. But a single light is enough for a lot of situations. You do need to think about the light bouncing off other walls. So ideally the other walls should be black (Marcus puts up black boards for this to avoid the room in his house having black walls). Marcus says high ceilings are good (if you have a choice) as you can then put lighting above them. He deals with this by putting the subject on a chair. Sam suggests the use of a local village hall as a large in-expensive studio space. Marcus says it's a good idea, but the number of windows could be an issue. Lenses In a small space 100mm will be the largest lens that can be used. Marcus uses a 35mm lens a lot. He says if he is careful and aware of potential distortion it can work well. How far you are from the subject makes a big difference. Marcus likes to be close to his subjects when photographing them. Marcus has a white sit/stand desk with a white top which he says is great as a prop for subjects to lean against. Then it doubles up as a desk the rest of the time. You can catch up Sam, Marcus, guests and other photographers on our Facebook Group. You can sign up to the Shoot to the Top newsletter here to ensure the podcast arrives in your inbox every week.

Welcome to another episode of Tog-Talk: Photographers in Conversation! I'm Kevin Ahronson, founder of the Hampshire School of Photography, and this week, it's a solo episode where I'll be answering a listener question. Just as a quick reminder, every other week, I fly solo, diving into the photography questions you send in, while on alternating weeks, I'm joined by my fantastic co-host, Kelly Perrin from the Big Ambition Photography Company. Kelly runs a local studio in Fleet and together we co-sponsor the Hampshire Photography Network, a thriving Facebook community of amateur photographers.Today, I'll be tackling a fantastic listener question about shooting in low light situations... should you underexpose in-camera and brighten in Lightroom, or let the ISO creep up and deal with the grain in post? I'll break down the differences between amplifying a signal in-camera versus brightening it in post-processing and explore which approach yields the best results. As always, I've done my best to keep things as simple and practical as possible, although some subjects, by their nature, can be a bit more technical than others (this could be one of them). So, grab a cup of coffee and let's dive in! Be sure to stick around until the end, where I'll share some exciting updates about our upcoming Photography Masterclass, workshops, and free Photographer's Evenings. Now, let's get into it!Photo StudioLooking for an inexpensive, amateur-friendly photography studio in Hampshire? Must-Have Boudoir Photography Studio Furniture & Equipment - Episode 75 of the Sustainable Freedom with Boudoir Photography Podcast with Tracy Lynn! 4 Best Pieces of Boudoir Photography Equipment to Level Up Your Photos Since 2017, I've made a cumulative $1.5 million dollars. Yes really. And I did it all while working less than 30 hours each month. Now, before we get too far into this post, I do want to say that there are several reasons for this, which I discuss a lot more in other episodes. Things like client experience, and knowing how to market yourself…those big business concepts. But just like those big things make a big difference, so do the little things. In fact, sometimes it is those little things that can make the biggest difference — and ultimately, make or break your client experience. That's why in this episode, I want to talk about one of those little things that everyone forgets. Because I truly believe that it is SO important. Your studio furniture. Yes, for real! I know it may sound a little silly, but think about it — when a client is getting their photos back, they want them to be elegant and professional. And you can't really do that without having high-quality pieces of furniture or other “props.” So, I have specific pieces that I've chosen with purpose in mind. Yes, they were an investment, but it was the right one! These pieces have all been with me for YEARS. And today, I'm sharing those must-haves with you! If you listen to main stream media and those that read the newspaper you are likely to hear that doom and gloom (aka a recession) is coming. Or perhaps its already here, depends who you talk to, but in my positive opinion it actually doesn't have to be all bad, in fact, from what I have seen plenty of luxury brands actually thrive when times are tough and I fully believe you can too. Here's the thing, when times get tight there will always still be opportunities available to you to increase your business if you clearly articulate your brand value, focus some energy on adverting to become more visible and keep your mindset in check. And most importantly now is the time to build more income streams into your business so you don't only rely on one income source. Perhaps it is time to become more creative than you have in the past with what you offer, lean into how you use your time and really be open and see all the opportunities that are available to you to make money. Episode #260.Molly Keyser:Molly's first business was a photography studio. It was a massive success, and other photographers started asking her how she did it, so she decided to package her knowledge into digital products. Those digital products turned into a $2 million-per-year business, and people started asking her how she did that. Today, Molly helps business owners add passive digital products to their businesses so they can stop trading their time for money and help even more people by sharing their knowledge with the world! Molly currently lives in New Mexico with her husband Aaron and dog Franklin. You can often find them camping in the mountains, road-tripping the southwest, or traveling Europe.Connect with Molly KeyserWebsiteFacebookTiktok InstagramYoutubeFavorite Quotes“I didn't invent paid challenges. When they actually do the challenge, they're going to get results, be happy, and they're going to end up buying the thing that you're pitching at the end.” - Molly Keyser“I definitely think it's worth the money that people are spending. If you're a listener or a follower of mine, you have probably had the chance to see some of Christina Gressianu's work. Christina is a dear friend of mine, whom I met on Twitter nearly 15 years ago! Today, she is joining me on the show from her photography studio in Loveland, Colorado. I am so happy to finally be close by and continue to work with her often. In this episode she shares some insights she has on photography, being a photographer, and even being photographed.Christina makes this really beautiful statement, “A photograph is just a slice of life.” This is so true, it's really just a small peak at a moment, and many times clients can get worried, concerned, and at times displeased with how they look. As a photographer, Christina's focus is truly about making her clients and subjects feel comfortable. One of her cardinal rules is to never let a client become the butt of a joke, she loves to crack jokes but they will always be at her expense to get her clients laughing, having fun, and feeling good during a session. She calls it a “human experience”.Behind the camera, photographing her clients, is where Christina feels the most in the zone. For her, sales and marketing is nerve wracking and her most difficult feat in her business. She is so genuine and wants the experience to be exactly what the client needs and can afford. She talks a bit about what it's like as a photographer making sales, and the investment good photography is for someone. We even chat about a big ticket conversation: iPhone versus professional photography.Whether you're an adult or a child, showing up to a photography session can really feel like the pressure is on. Christina shares some stories about how she helps lighten the pressure and some tidbits of advice to make your next shoot go in the desired direction. Check out Christina Gressianu's portfolio and social media to see some of her work! What's Inside:How should you prepare for a professional photography session?iPhone versus Professional Photography, which is better? How to loosen the pressure during a photography shoot? The importance of honesty and authenticity as a photographer.A photographer's cardinal rule for keeping clients comfortable.Mentioned In This Episode:Christina Gressianu Photographer Christina Gressianu (@photocg) • Instagram photos and videos Christina Gressianu Photographer - Home | Facebook EVOLVE 2023 in Denver, CO - Crystal Media Crystal Media Connect with CrystalCrystal on YouTubeCrystal on InstagramCrystal on FacebookCrystal on TikTok

In this episode, we sat down with business owners, Meg and Micah Kandros. Meg owns her own practice as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and Micah is an award-winning designer and photographer.Meg and Micah are both seasoned professionals in their industries and are passionate about going against the status quo of “the grind” and “hustle culture” that includes Micah being a founding member of the Not Crushing It Club - this will make sense when you hear him talk about it. With two businesses to run and three boys to raise, these two have so much wisdom in how they manage their priorities and still run successful businesses. We specifically talked about making sacrifices for dreams, the fear that comes from starting a business, using your skills to support your spouse, working in the same location with your spouse, and why we should reconsider our ideal view of retirement. We also talk about the benefits of working in a corporate job before stepping out on your own and how to gain freedom to take career risks with a “fail forward” mindset. There's something for everyone in this episode, and we hope you find it as insightful and encouraging as we did.Links Mentioned in Episode:The Myth of SisyphusStarbucks Health InsuranceRestoring Beauty: The Good, the True, and the Beautiful in the Writings of C.S.
