We're cracking open a New Riff Single Barrel from Kentucky Bourbon Festival 2025, signed by Master Distiller Brian and chosen as a Distiller's Row pick. New Riff built its name on transparency and tradition, non chill filtered, bottled in bond releases, and a commitment to quality. This single barrel clocks in at 116 proof and delivers deep caramel, dried fruit, leather and earthy richness from nose to finish. But the bigger question we explore is this: when you're surrounded by incredible bourbon at a festival like KBF, how do you decide which single bottle gets the precious luggage space? We unpack what makes a single barrel special, whether blends are actually more reliable, and whether the market is starting to feel saturated with “single barrel” labels that don't always carry the same meaning. This one stood out not because it shouted the loudest, but because it felt balanced, layered, and genuinely unique. The Roads to a palate cleanser, puppies, coats, and questions
Text us your wine questions, craziest wine experiences, or if you just have a comment for us. . This one is a bit controversial in some ways. One of the criticisms I've heard levelled against the industry in the Okanagan is that a lot of us have 'cellar palate'. In my travels across Canada, I have not noticed this topic in conversation as much in Ontario as I have noticed in British Columbia. Essentially, 'cellar palate' happens when a winery employee 'becomes too acclimatized to their own wines or those of their neighbours'. (See Jancis Robinson's article that I mentioned in the podcast here.) Basically, they start to judge wines from other regions or styles based on their own wines. I've met plenty of people who only like BC wine and won't try anything else. I did a podcast a long time ago where everyone was supposed to bring a bottle of their favourite wines and one person brought a wine from the winery where they worked, which was against my one and only rule that we never pumped our own wineries' brands (the ones where we all worked) on the podcast. I've been susceptible to it as well. I totally recall not liking any white wines that I tasted from Washington State in 2010 when I attended the Wine Blogger's Conference in Walla Walla. They all tasted flabby to me - not enough acidity. Of course, even then after only 3 years living in the Okanagan, I was used to the higher acid wines in BC. It took time to appreciate the lower-acid wines from Washington State. So, enjoy this discussion and tasting that features three wines tasted blind. It's a long episode but worth listening all the way through. Welcome to the Sipsters Podcast! Thank you for listening to the Sipster's Podcast. Find us online at sipsters.ca. The Do One Better! Podcast – Philanthropy, Sustainability and Social Entrepreneurship
Cleft lip and palate is one of the most common congenital conditions worldwide, yet effective care goes far beyond repairing a visible deformity. It requires long-term, multidisciplinary support that addresses speech, hearing, dental development and psychological wellbeing. In this episode, Brian Sommerlad, a surgeon and Chairman of CLEFT, shares four decades of experience in cleft care across the UK and low and middle income countries. Drawing on extensive work in places such as Bangladesh and Nepal, he explains why short-term surgical missions alone are not enough and how well-intentioned philanthropy can sometimes undermine local health systems. The conversation explores what sustainable cleft care really looks like. Brian outlines CLEFT's distinctive approach, which focuses on training local professionals, funding non-surgical roles such as speech therapists and orthodontists, and supporting multidisciplinary teams that can continue delivering care long after external support has stepped back. Key topics include: What cleft lip and palate is, how common it is, and why it affects far more than appearance The lifelong importance of speech therapy, hearing support and dental care The psychological and social impact of cleft conditions on children and families Why teaching and capacity-building create more impact than simply doing operations How poorly designed NGO activity can unintentionally weaken local services The value of treating local clinicians, hospitals and governments as equal partners Practical insights into allocating philanthropic funding for long-term benefit Brian also reflects on his own journey from medical training in Australia to international work spanning Vietnam, Bangladesh, Iraq and beyond, offering candid observations on what has and has not worked in global health over time. This episode is a thoughtful examination of how healthcare philanthropy can move from short-term intervention to lasting change, with lessons that extend well beyond cleft care alone. Visit our Knowledge Hub at Lidji.org for information on 350+ case studies and interviews with remarkable leaders in philanthropy, sustainability and social entrepreneurship.

In today's episode Eoin chats with Jason Ziobrowski (Chef Jay Z).Today's guest brings flavor, passion, and purpose to everything he does. Jason Ziobrowski — or as many know him, Chef Jay-Z — has spent nearly two decades as a corporate R&D chef, creating recipes and nutrition programs for hospitals, patients, and communities. His mission? To influence people positively through food and to help change the American palate, one dish at a time. But behind the chef's coat is a deeply personal journey. After years of being told he was simply ‘pre-diabetic,' Jason was finally diagnosed in 2020 with type 1.5 diabetes. At the time, his fasting sugars were nearly 22.2mmol/L (400mg/dL), and his A1C hit 14.Instead of giving up, Jason took charge. He overhauled his lifestyle cold turkey, dropping his fasting sugars down into a healthy range and transforming not just his health, but his outlook on life.Today, Chef Jay-Z is thriving with type 1, using technology like the Medtronic pump, leaning on his family, and continuing to inspire others through food, education, and his own story of resilience. From hospital kitchens to his own blood sugar battles, Jason has learned that lifestyle change isn't just necessary — it can be one of the best things to ever happen to you.As always, be sure to rate, comment, subscribe and share. Your interaction and feedback really helps the podcast. This year's Fated Mates Live was a little different than those we've hosted before, as it was also launch day for Sarah's These Summer Storms! We celebrated in style in the Midwest, hosted by the fabulous team at indie bookstore (and romance lovers), Novel Neighbor and joined by our absolute favorite, Kate Clayborn. So many Firebirds turned out to celebrate with us from across the midwest to help Sarah learn the intricacies of Midwestern Romance Heroes™️, to talk about Derek Craven and others, and to celebrate Storms in style. The audience was, unfortunately, without microphones, so some of the event has been edited from this recording, but we hope you'll get the vibes -- and learn a little about the midwest! (We apologize for the Indiana and Connecticut shade within.) Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate with us -- we couldn't have asked for a better event, or a better launch day for These Summer Storms. Thank you for reading, for hanging, and for standing in an endless line to meet us and spend a little of your rainy Tuesday with us!
While baijiu is celebrated as China's national spirit and wine is steadily gaining popularity, yellow wine—known locally as Huangjiu—constitutes less than 2% of the country's total alcoholic beverage market. Nevertheless, it holds a distinctive place in Chinese drinking culture. With a history spanning over 2,500 years, Huangjiu is among the world's oldest alcoholic drinks, yet it remains relatively obscure outside of China. Today, Simon Zhou, founder of Ruby Red Fine Wine, is here to share the story of Huangjiu. Recognized as one of Forbes China's most admired figures in the food and beverage sector, Simon started with a two-person operation, which has since expanded to a team of over 160 by 2024. Ruby Red Wine Group now operates multiple offices both in China and internationally, representing more than 300 global brands, from fine wines to premium sake. Its clientele includes leading hospitality venues, specialty distributors, and passionate wine collectors. In 2022, Simon launched Vintry France, a négociant business in Beaune, France. The following year, he invested in a boutique winery in northeast China and co-founded a rice wine production base in Shaoxing. By 2024, he had also overseen the launch of Domaine 41, a modern wine retail venture in Shanghai. Beyond his business endeavors, Simon actively educates others about wine, engaging over 60,000 followers across various social media platforms. He is now focusing some of his efforts on Huangjiu, and in this episode, we'll explore this intriguing beverage that has graced imperial courts, complemented seasonal delicacies, and is now resonating with contemporary consumers.Connect with Simon Zhou at www.rubyred.com.cn Since 2016, Bottled in China brings you into the food and drink scene through conversations with the some of the most happening personalities. In this episode we chat with Aleks Rybchinskiy, co-founder of Berski organ meat sticks, about why organ meats are among nature's most nutrient-dense foods and how they can support overall health. Aleks explains the impressive macronutrient and micronutrient profiles of liver, heart, and other organs—rich in vitamin A, vitamin B12, iron, and choline—nutrients essential for energy, mental clarity, fertility, and immune strength. He shares how Berski incorporates organs, primarily beef liver from regeneratively raised cattle, into convenient, flavorful meat sticks, offering an easy way to get ancestral nutrition without relying solely on supplements. The conversation also unpacks the truth behind food labels like “pasture-raised,” “grass-fed,” and “grass-finished,” exposing industry loopholes and emphasizing the importance of asking farmers the right questions to ensure ethical, regenerative sourcing. Beyond nutrition, Aleks weaves in a holistic perspective on health, encouraging listeners to reconnect with ancestral wisdom, simplify their approach to wellness, and embrace foods and practices that truly nourish body and mind.Aleks Rybchinskiy is the co-founder of Primal Fusion Health, specializing in wellness education and primal integration to live well. As a Master CHEK Practitioner, Neurosomatic & Holistic Therapist with over 15 years of clinical experience working with celebrities, pro athletes, and all walks of life, Aleks guides clients and students globally to live in harmony with themselves and others - mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.SHOW NOTES:0:40 Welcome to the show!3:38 Aleks Rybchinskiy's bio4:22 Welcome him to the podcast!5:17 Pottenger's Cats study8:03 How animals prefer organ meats10:33 Palate & taste changes12:23 Benefits of organs15:05 Comparison to bioregulators19:13 Micronutrient density of organs21:14 Conventional vs Organic vs Grass-Fed vs Regenerative27:32 Renee's story about Regenerative farms29:35 *MIMIO HEALTH*31:27 Animal feeds35:08 Berski macronutrients & nutrition38:13 Thyroid, airways, kidneys & cortisol44:01 Organ correlations45:47 Eating feedlot animals51:02 Local farmers, chickens & eggs57:55 About Berski!59:59 Vitamin A toxicity1:04:15 His final piece of adviceRESOURCES:EatBerski.com - code: BIOHACKERBABES to save 20%Primal Fusion HealthBodhi Building InstituteMIMIO HEALTH - code: BIOHACKERBABES to save 20%PUORI - code: BIOHACKERBABES to save 20%Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/biohacker-babes-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

After winning the Ice Ultra (230km at the Arctic Circle) and the Highland Ultra (125km in the Scottish Highlands) in 2025—each by hours and against stacked fields—Ioana is now going all-in to complete the entire Beyond the Ultimate series in one calendar year. That means racing across jungles, deserts, mountains, and ice—self-funded, self-motivated, and 100% committed. We dive into her mindset, training strategy, and what it takes to juggle full-time work while prepping for some of the toughest foot races on Earth. From selling her flat to afford the journey, to building her endurance and community from scratch, Ioana's story is raw, real, and massively inspiring. Explicit language: This episode contains one F-bomb. If you're chasing big goals or need a fire lit under you—this is the one to listen to.
