Lens Stabilisation. 15. Improper Focusing Technique. 16. Software Processing. 17. Optical Aberrations. 18. Long Exposure. 19. Macro Photography; and 20. Outdated Equipment. Lights! Cameras! Arachnids! And lizards and bees and beetles. Macro photography is like magic: curved glass gives an entirely new take on the world, from dust on a cricket's brow to a curious mantid stare to the elegant symmetry of spider whiskers. Joseph Saunders is an Oklahoma-based wildlife photographer whose larger-than-life photos of bugs and reptiles will make you realize just how little we appreciate the creatures on our window sills and skittering up our porches. We talk shop about cameras, bug hunts, lenses, patience, Moth Week, BlackAFinSTEM, and also getting into nature with different mobility concerns. Alie is a shameless, rabid fan of Joseph and asked Patrons to help concoct an -ology to describe the art + science of his macro photography. Aperiology now exists to describe the tiny aperture used to keep these creatures in focus, and the huge world it opens up to us.2023 CALENDARS ARE FOR SALESupport Joseph's photography on PatreonVisit Joseph's website and follow him on Instagram and TwitterA donation went to the American Chronic Pain AssociationFor more links: alieward.com/ologies/aperiologySponsors of OlogiesTranscripts and bleeped episodesSmologies (short, classroom-safe) episodesBecome a patron of Ologies for as little as a buck a monthOlogiesMerch.com has hats, shirts, masks, totes!Follow @Ologies on Twitter and InstagramFollow @AlieWard on Twitter and InstagramSound editing by Jarrett Sleeper of MindJam Media & Steven Ray MorrisTranscripts by Emily White of The WordaryWebsite by Kelly R. On this week's episode of the B&H Photography Podcast we return to the 2022 OPTIC Conference for two enjoyable and pragmatic segments about macro photography. While both photographers we speak with are well-rounded professionals, their not-so-secret joy is crawling around in gardens and woods, making beautiful close-up macro photographs of insects, plants, and the tiny wonders of nature.   Our first guest is Chris McGinnis, who specializes in spider and insect photography and is an OM System Ambassador. Our chat with McGinnis is incredibly elucidating, not only about OM System lenses and cameras, but also about computational photography and his macro techniques with flash.   After a break, we welcome Sigma Ambassador Heather Larkin to discuss her macro work with flowers and to learn a bit about her specialty portrait work. Primarily, we discuss the wealth of macro subjects available in your own backyard and garden, but we also learn of the latest Sigma macro lenses and a few very specific tips for approaching your subjects and maintaining focus. Fueling Creativity S3 Ep 6 with Bea Leiderman   What are the benefits of being a novice learner?  How does having a personal passion or interest benefit your work as an educator? In this episode of the Fueling Creativity podcast, Dr. Cyndi Burnett and Dr. Matthew Worwood speak with Bea Leiderman, an educational technology coach based in Virginia with over 20 years of experience in education.  In 2012, macrophotography became Bea's gateway to learning about science, biology, and the natural environment. As a novice learner, Bea had the opportunity to consider learning from a new perspective, later changing her approach to teaching. Bea sheds light on the power of being a novice as an educator by sharing her first interaction with macrophotography and how it has since influenced her teaching methods. They talk about the importance of finding joy in learning for yourself, exploring non-educational blogs and resources, and the connection that can be built between educators and students when you're both learning something new. Can you maintain a level of control while students explore their creativity? How do you raise curious children? Is it important to limit the technology and screen time your kids are exposed to? Listen in to hear Bea's answers!   “Creativity is at the most creative when it's cross-disciplinary, it's outward-focused rather than inward-focused.” - Bea Leiderman   View Bea's Macro Photography on Instagram   Bea's Tips for Teachers and Parents: Expose your kids to lots of things, even things that may not be traditionally meant for kids. Different types of music, old movies, museums, festivals, factories, etc. Be interested in what your kids are interested in and don't make fun of what they like.  Be open to social media and not “the hype”. Find the interesting, passionate, quirky people on social media. There's something to learn from everything and everyone. Don't be afraid to fail. Don't be afraid to do something simple or be a novice. Look for things that bring you joy and fun.    “You end up learning all sorts of things by following people who are interested in things that are completely different from what you're doing.” - Bea Leiderman   Resources Mentioned: Listen to the episode with Ron BeghettoListen to the episode with Dr. James Kaufman Listen to the episode with Dr. Caroline BrookfieldListen to the episode with Wendy Ross  Listen to the episode with Dr. Sally ReisCreativity blog series by Punya Mishra   Eager to bring more creativity into your home or classroom?  Access a variety of creativity resources and tools & listen to more episodes of The Fueling Creativity Podcast by visiting our website,  www.CreativityandEducation.com.   Subscribe to our monthly newsletter!   You can also find The Fueling Creativity Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Audible, and PodBean! Macrophotography became a gateway to learning about science, biology, and the natural environment in ways she didn't initially anticipate. Ferraro is a macro photographer and a conservation photographer; his images tell the story of a very tiny world inhabited by important organisms that all have roles to play in creating harmony for our ecosystem. Random patches of nature in urban environments become sources of new insects that Ferraro can observe, track, and take photos of on their own terms, never harming them or taking them out of their environment.   Ferraro was originally scheduled to install a full exhibition of works to be displayed here in the library. That is, before the shutdown. So, we talk about our high hopes for finally getting to coordinate the art show here in the library in the very near future, as well as his passion for nature and science.
