Join me today as I welcome Emily Winslow, author of Time to Write, to Online for Authors where we discuss some of the key components of writing outlined in her book. Emily Winslow lives in Cambridge, England. She's the author of a Cambridge-set series of crime novels (The Whole World, The Start of Everything, The Red House, Look For Her) and the memoir Jane Doe January. Her books have been published by Random House, HarperCollins, Allison & Busby, and Shanghai Translation Publishing House. Emily trained as an actor at Carnegie Mellon University's prestigious drama conservatory and earned a master's degree in museum studies from Seton Hall University. For six years she wrote for Games magazine, creating increasingly elaborate and lavishly illustrated logic puzzles. She lives with her husband and two sons, and teaches at the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education at beautiful Madingley Hall, where she is the Course Director for Cambridge's MSt degree in Crime & Thriller Writing. Emily is represented by Cameron McClure  at the Donald Maass Literary Agency. Time to Write by Emily Winslow is an awesome author craft book written by someone who is an author and professor teaching writing. Over the years, Emily taught many different classes and finally decided to put them all together into a book. What I loved about this craft book is that it is less about what you must do and more about things you should keep in mind when writing. She doesn't say "Write your book this way," but instead suggests you think about things like the difference between plot and structure, consider what tense you are using and why, and figure out how to find your writing tribe. What's more, this book is perfect for beginners or for authors who've written several books already. Regardless of where you are, you'll get something from her lessons. This is a must-read for anyone who writes or is considering it! On the morning of September 12, 2013, a fugitive task force arrested Arthur Fryar at his apartment in Brooklyn. His DNA, entered in the FBI’s criminal database after a drug conviction, had been matched to evidence from a rape in Pennsylvania years earlier. Over the next year, Fryar and his lawyer fought his extradition and prosecution for the rape—and another like it—which occurred in 1992. The victims—one from January of that year, the other from November—were kept anonymous in the media. This is the story of Jane Doe January.Emily Winslow was a young drama student at Carnegie Mellon University’s elite conservatory in Pittsburgh when a man brutally attacked and raped her in January 1992. While the police's search for her rapist proved futile, Emily reclaimed her life. Over the course of the next two decades, she fell in love, married, had two children, and began writing mystery novels set in her new hometown of Cambridge, England. Then, in fall 2013, she received shocking news—the police had found her rapist. This is her intimate memoir—the story of a woman’s traumatic past catching up with her, in a country far from home, surrounded by people who have no idea what she’s endured. Caught between past and present, and between two very different cultures, the inquisitive and restless crime novelist searches for clarity. Beginning her own investigation, she delves into Fryar’s family and past, reconnects with the detectives of her case, and works with prosecutors in the months leading to trial. As she recounts her long-term quest for closure, Winslow offers a heartbreakingly honest look at a vicious crime—and offers invaluable insights into the mind and heart of a victim. In the winter of 1992, Emily Winslow was a young theater major getting ready for her next semester when she was followed into her building by a stranger who then forced his way into her apartment and raped her. Over the years, she had kept in touch with the sex crimes unit of the Pittsburgh police, even after she moved to Cambridge, England. Then, in 2013, the DNA evidence finally produces a match. The suspect is arrested, and the path to justice begins. Jane Doe January is Winslow's account of the months that followed—including her frustration when many of those close to her, unsure of how to address the situation, kept an emotional distance that was, just then, the very last thing she needed.

Jane Doe January. A woman is raped in her own apartment by an unknown man who had made his way into her building. Despite supportive family and law enforcement, it would be two decades before the identity of the rapist would be discovered. Bringing the man to justice would become her mission and she set about researching him and doing what she had to do to have charges brought against him. Along the way she would have to deal with challenges as well as an important question as she approached a trial date: Will her progress over all of these years diminish what he did to her? Emily Winslow speaks candidly about what happened to her and what she learned about the system, and herself, in her quest for justice. Today's sponsor is Audible.com.
