In Politics and in life, the Rules are different for different people. Take Age. Old Age.  We are a nation obsessed with Youth. When President Joe Biden was seeking reelection the media put the spotlight on his every stumble, every slip of the tongue, every mistake.  They blamed his Age. What about Trump? It didn't matter that Trump is not that much younger than Biden and he is certainly not a great political orator.  The Rules are different for Trump. He spews hate speech and lies. He was impeached twice, charged with multiple felonies, and a jury convicted him of 34 Felonies for Business Fraud, in connection to Hush Money payments to a Porn Star.  And still the polls show Harris and Trump are locked in a statistical dead heat. MAGA Republicans love Trump. The media loves Trump.  The Rules are different for Trump.  Although it is NOT an October Surprise, I was a bit shocked with I logged into the New York Times on Sunday morning to read the article I quote from in this Podcast.  One month before election day! In Politics in the Crevices: Urban Design and the Making of Property Markets in Cairo and Istanbul (Duke UP, 2023), Sarah El-Kazaz takes readers into the world of urban planning and design practices in Istanbul and Cairo. In this transnational ethnography of neighborhoods undergoing contested rapid transformations, she reveals how the battle for housing has shifted away from traditional political arenas onto private crevices of the city. She outlines how multiple actors—from highly capitalized international NGOs and corporations to city dwellers, bureaucrats, and planning experts—use careful urban design to empower conflicting agendas, whether manipulating property markets to protect affordable housing or corner luxury real estate. El-Kazaz shows that such contemporary politicizations of urban design stem from unresolved struggles at the heart of messy transitions from the welfare state to neoliberalism, which have shifted the politics of redistribution from contested political arenas to design practices operating within market logics, ultimately relocating political struggles onto the city's most intimate crevices. In so doing, she raises critical questions about the role of market reforms in redistributing resources and challenges readers to rethink neoliberalism and the fundamental ways it shapes cities and polities. Sarah El-Kazaz is Associate Professor in the politics department at SOAS, University of London. Her research interests include: critical political economy, urbanism, infrastructure and digital politics, and her new book project investigates the politics of digital infrastructures by following “Cloud” technologies across the Global South. Her work appears in peer-reviewed journals including: Comparative Studies in Society and History, and City and Society. She previously taught at Oberlin College, and completed a PhD at Princeton University. Micah asks if having an "abstain/present" vote should be removed as an option. K Sera and Phil ponder the questions while also doing their very best not to get side tracked into other conversations. Note: this episode was originally recorded last year (from publication) in mid Summer of 2022. Things have changed, obviously.   Show notes: N/A   K Sera's after thoughts: In our podcast pasture, the sheep dog has adhd!   One correction: Talisker isn't the ‘only' distillery on the isle of skye, but it is the oldest! My 18-year is still in my booze closet, and I think I'll have a sip or two tonight for some reminiscence.   Now, abstaining on a vote, I think, is definitely a government official passing the buck, but I think there are things that the government doesn't actually need to rule on. Some things are moot. Some things are not worth enshrining in law. Some things don't need to be decided immediately, especially if more information and fact finding is necessary. Abstaining from a vote should be allowed.   I do think it is frustrating, however, and I would agree that it isn't a great look for our representatives showing up consistently to not work or make decisions on the things we elected them to decide on. If you choose to abstain, maybe you could make it annoying for the abstainer by requiring an explanation, similar to the way a Supreme Court judge writes dissenting opinions? I don't know.       Phil's after thoughts Our poor sheep dog is either exhausted from chasing our errant thoughts or has given up on life and found a bottle of scotch. Rest well, Sheepy.   When I re-listen to this episode I think of the classic line from an old satire movie Dr Strangelove where someone shouts "There is no fighting in the War Room!"   Playing the "PRESENT" or "ABSTAIN" vote is 100% politics. It is playing politics IN POLITICS at PEAK POLITICS. About a year later after the initial recording of this episode, Krysten Sinema ended up leaving the Democratic Party and becoming an independent. She shrewdly played her hand and now the Democratic party must face a difficult election: either they attempt to present a Democratic challenger (where Kyrsten Sinema will inevitably split the vote and have a Republican candidate enter the Senate) or support Krysten Sinema in Arizona in order to reduce the GOP voting power in government. Either way, her "ABSTAIN" and "PRESENT" votes were signals to Senate leadership AND to her voters (as many of AZ politics plays center/independent compared to the rest of the nation). Long story short: she is playing politics. The sad thing is that they had better primary candidates for the Democratic party when she was ultimately elected, and if they would have went with ANY OF THEM they would have avoided this whole mess. But that is what politics are, and unfortunately it will be a sad day when major life-saving laws "could have been enacted" but weren't because she wanted more power and sway.   The only way to mitigate this is to increase the voter motivation to actually care what is going on in their local and federal elections (and who is just playing for power, and who is actually representing Americans). I think we have gotten there in Minnesota at least, and it is my hope that other states realize that passing laws that only protect the rich while also binding the rest of us is no longer "good politics" anymore.   A human can dream, after all.

Writers Guild of America members go on strike after failing to reach new compensation deal with TV and film producers. Labour is set to abandon its promise to scrap university tuition fees in England. In Politics: (9:32) As if we needed any more confirmation that we're being led by a demonic Tory Party, Rishi Sunak decided it was a good time to dap up the freshest face in fascism, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni. In Tech: (23:14) As if we needed any more confirmation that AI is growing a little too fast, the man labelled "Godfather of AI" decided to quit Google and fire off warning shots about the future of AI. In Music: (34:00) Something that is constantly on my mind is the lack of female music producers. The share is reportedly a dismal 5%. So why is there such an extreme lack of female representation in the music production space? Lastly, in TV: (45:55) The life of Tupac Shakur has been told ad nauseaum, even people that don't listen to him know who he is. But one wrinkle of his life that hasn't been covered (as much) is his relationship with his mother Afeni. A new doc hopes to add another wrinkle to the book of Pac. Thank you for listening! This episode should make for an interesting conversation, with Kris feeling fed up with his "Republican Party" and Justin being of the more Liberal persuasion... will Kris & Justin get along and/or agree on anything? Topics Discussed and Key Points:●      The main thesis of The Politics of the Asia-Pacific●      The biggest evolutions in the Asia-Pacific over the last 15 years●      Relationships between countries in the Asia-Pacific●      Major non-governmental actors in the Asia-Pacific region●      How average citizens regard tensions in the region●      How the pandemic impacted politics in the region●      Often overlooked factors by the West concerning politics in the Asia-Pacific region Episode Summary:Today on The Negotiation, we talk with Mark Williams, Chair of Political Studies at Vancouver Island University. He is the editor of The Politics of the Asia-Pacific: Triumphs, Challenges, and Threats, published by the University of Toronto Press. He previously authored a book on the politics of Indonesia titled Indonesia, Islam, and the International Political Economy: Clash or Cooperation?.Says Mark: “My road to China is through this broader prism of the politics of the Asia-Pacific.”In Politics of the Asia-Pacific, Mark discusses the so-called “East-Asian Miracle” as it was referred to by the World Bank in a 1993 publication. In that publication, it is said that the economic success of the Asia-Pacific had a 1 in 10,000 chance of occurring. This success did not come about by chance, of course; it's by design, thanks to public officials working with government bureaucracies as well as heads of major industries to coordinate what is sometimes called a “developmental state model” for the region. This way, the government channels investment into specific industries to try to find and maximize comparative advantages rather than just leaving it entirely to market forces.Mark notes that world order is a “nebulous” concept influenced by a number of different factors such as questions of legitimacy. But certainly, one pillar of world order is the distribution of power in the international system, and that distribution of power has shifted considerably over the past decade. The dynamic between the different countries within the Asia-Pacific is characterized by “a thin degree of institutionalization”, or the delicate balance between the supreme sovereign authority of the state and the “pooling” of the sovereignty of every state for the purposes of maintaining a rules-based international order. With this in mind, China looms over the rest of the countries in the region. Mark dissects the various moving parts that contribute to tensions within the Asia-Pacific and what Western observers need to consider when discussing these tensions. He touches on the question of why the Western conception of liberal democracy may be largely incompatible in Asia, and how ASEAN can serve as a dialogue partner to find a shared purpose between every nation in the region. Key Quotes:“Back in 1993, in this World Bank publication called ‘The East-Asian Miracle', it said that, if it was random chance, the economic success of the Asia-Pacific would have had a 1 in 10,000 chance of occurring.” “By 2050, the Chinese economy will probably be about 150% the size of the United States. This is just an unprecedented transformation and redistribution of power in the international system.” “The rise of China, and the uncertainties and anxieties that it provokes, is something that reverberates across Southeast Asia as well as Japan and South Korea.” “This is going to be the approach to working with China: Every country in the region really needs to be careful about its bilateral relations. It needs to look for these multilateral relationships where possible, and that's not easy to do.”

It's a true honour to bring you Dr Dennis Jensen, or as we warmly refer to him, and have for 11 years as DJ. He's a brilliant scientific mind, has worked for the CSIRO, and an ex-member of Federal Parliament who served the Lower house for 11 years as a brilliant politician, and he is also the man who just so happens to be Anna's old boss in that Parliament.   In all of this legislative chaos that we have seen unfold in Victoria, the question that has rung out over & over again is 'but what's the alternative to the Lockdown?' to which Dennis says is no lockdown. He is a man with some backing to make such bold claims though, with a Bachelor of Applied Science, Masters of Science (Physics) and a PhD in Materials Science.   In this episode, we cover a lot, but specifically why, by his own Scientific mind that continuously pours over all the data & literature at hand, he believes the Lockdown should end & what the Government should have always done is protect our society's most vulnerable & let business & society get back to functioning.   He would still be IN Politics if not for inner-party corruption of branch stacking, so we dive into that right at the end (if you want to stick around).   Show Notes: 04:30 Growing up in South Africa 06:30 Living through apartheid 08:50 Are policy makers experts? 10:40 Lack of scrutiny around lockdowns effectiveness 12:31 The problem with computer modeling 16:31 DJ's position on lockdowns 19:15 Associated health impacts of lockdowns 22:00 Inflection points and flattening the curve 24:30 Natural immunity and T cells 29:30 Dan Andrews obsession with lockdowns 34:10 Cutting policy makers pay during the lockdown 34:20 Nazi Germany didn't start with death camps 36:20 Section 92 of the Australian Constitution 37:30 Victorian - the police State 39:10 Weakness's within the Australian Constitutionn 45:45 What can people do to oppose bad policy 47:35 No plan and no measure for success 49:25 Powers of the federal government in regards to state law. 51:20 Totalitarian behavior 55:30 unherd.com 57:30 But you are not a medical doctor? 01:02:30 Branch stacking 01:04:15 LNP branch structure borderline illegal 01:06:30 Anyone should be able to vote in preselection 01:09:20 DJ's Defamation case and subsequent win 01:12:20 The problem with major political parties 01:13:30 Lack of diversity in Australian politics FIND DENNIS HERE: https://www.facebook.com/DennisJensen1962 https://www.linkedin.com/in/dennis-jensen-57b13434/    FIND US HERE: Anna: @annarose_richards Morgan: @morgangrichards Website: https://annaandmorgan.com/

David Pettinicchio has written Politics of Empowerment: Disability Rights and the Cycle of American Policy Reform (Stanford University Press, 2019). He is assistant professor of sociology at the University of Toronto. In Politics of Empowerment, David Pettinicchio offers a history of the political development of disability rights in the United States. Since the 1920s, policy makers have framed and re-framed the obligations of the federal government to those with disabilities. Over time, disability rights emerged, establishing a set of guarantees for public accommodations. At the same time, disability policies were challenged as too expensive and unfeasible, a new threat to the disability community. Pettinicchio follows these ebbs and flows by integrating sociological and political science theories on policy change, social movements, and interest groups. Learn more about your ad choices. In Politics, Law, and Community in Islamic Thought: The Taymiyyan Moment (Cambridge University Press, 2012), Ovamir Anjum explores a timely topic, even though his focus is hundreds of years in the past. In order to present his topic Professor Anjum asks a series of foundational questions, such as: How have Muslims understood ideal government and political theology? What is the role of rulers in those politics? And what does it even mean to talk about “politics” as a category? In Anjum's words “the relationship between Islam and politics in the classical age can neither be described as a formal divorce nor a honeymoon, but rather a tenuous and unstable separation of spheres of religious authority from political power that was neither justified in theory nor wholeheartedly accepted” (136). The “Taymiyyan Moment,” a rephrasing of the “Machiavellian Moment” comes during the life of the prodigious author, theologian, and jurist Ibn Taymiyya (1263-1328). By honing in on Ibn Taymiyya's magnum opus, Dar' Ta'arud al-‘aql wa-l-naql (The Repulsion of Opposing Reason and Revelation)–not a political work, per se, but a theological one–Anjum reflects on, among other things, tensions between “community-centered” and “ruler-centered” visions of politics, and how scholars before Ibn Taymiyya had understood these ideas. Based on meticulous research of primary and secondary sources, Anjum's monograph will likely encourage new scholarship on the post-classical era, including the impact of Ibn Taymiyya's ideas on later generations, as well as interest among scholars from a variety of disciplines, ranging from History and Religious Studies, to Political Science and Law.
