How Two Engineers Turned AMG Into A Legend

Two engineers walked away from the safe path and built an icon. That's the spark behind AMG's journey from late-night tuning to a seat at Mercedes' top table, and author Matt DeLorenzo brings the full story to life with factory access, rare photos, and details that rarely leave the archives. We dive into the early moonlighting years, the audacious 300 SEL 6.8 “Red Pig” that shocked Spa in 1971, and how race wins turned a side hustle into the performance heartbeat of Mercedes-Benz.Matt helps us connect the dots from privateer sedans to the Hammer era, where a V8-stuffed E-Class redefined fast luxury for the U.S. market. We talk about German touring car glory, the first co-developed C 36, and the strategic moves that led Mercedes to buy AMG outright. Inside Affalterbach, the one-man-one-engine philosophy still stands, with each builder signing their work. That culture of accountability and craft underpins halo cars from the SLS Gullwing to the AMG GT, proving AMG can design from a clean sheet, not only tune. There's a fascinating twist next door: HWA, Hans Werner Aufrecht's outfit, building GT race cars a stone's throw from AMG's campus. It keeps competition central to the brand's identity, reminding us that stopwatch data still shapes the street. We round out the show with a practical review of the 2025 Kia Telluride—trims, towing, real-world fuel economy—and a nod to Marco Andretti's retirement, a closing chapter in a storied racing surname. If you love motorsport history, engineering craft, and the stories behind badges that actually mean something, this one's for you. Think a three-cylinder can't pull its weight? We put the 2026 Chevy Trax through nearly 500 miles and found punchy torque, smart gearing, and honest 30-mpg efficiency that make city runs and highway stretches feel easy. Then we climb into the 2025 Kia Telluride SX Prestige AWD, where the vibe flips from thrifty to luxurious: a serene ride, a clean and modern cabin with a huge infotainment screen, and a 291-hp V6 that tows up to 5,500 pounds without breaking a sweat. We start with the Trax's sharp design, intuitive controls, and surprising cargo room, weighing the real trade-off of two-wheel drive against its attractive price. From trims to tech, it's a small SUV that nails the basics and sprinkles in style, competing credibly with Mazda CX-30 and VW Taos on affordability and ease of use. Then we step into the Telluride's larger world—three rows of comfort, refined road manners, and the kind of daily livability that wins families fast. The knobs are back where they matter, the ride is limo-like, and the value story holds even as the options stack up.Between these road tests, we detour into car history with Chevy's VertiPak experiment—shipping Vegas nose-down to cut rail costs. It's a wild look at how engineering, logistics, and real-world execution collide, and it frames a timeless buying lesson: value isn't just about price; it's about how well a vehicle fits your life. Whether you're chasing efficiency and a low entry point or space, power, and long-distance comfort, these two SUVs show how clear priorities create better choices. If you enjoy smart car talk with real-world numbers and honest impressions, follow the show, share this episode with a friend, and leave a quick review so more drivers can find us. A tiny, overlooked component is bringing giant assembly lines to a halt. We dig into the Nexperia saga—European control, Chinese export blocks, and a packaging choke point—and explain why the “boring” diodes and transistors tucked into door locks, HVAC, and wiper motors matter as much as any cutting-edge processor. When each vehicle hides 300 to 600 of these legacy chips, one missing part can park an entire line, and that's exactly what Honda, Volkswagen, and Nissan are starting to face.We connect the supply chain dots to real-world outcomes: reduced shifts, delayed models, and dealer backlogs. Then we pivot to a sharp recalls roundup, where Ford's record-setting year meets moonroof deflectors, defrost issues, and camera failures, while tires and lighting glitches hit other brands from Cadillac to Fiat and Ferrari. It's a tour of what happens when quality, parts availability, and service capacity collide—and what owners can do now to stay safe and informed. For a breather, we fire up Name The Sold Car Price, comparing a 1952 Studebaker Commander, a 1965 MGB, an '85 F-250, a 2002 Thunderbird, and a stunning 1936 Packard 120. You'll hear what moved, what stalled, and what these numbers say about condition, provenance, and taste. We also map the calendar for Veterans Day cruise-ins, toy drives, and big regional shows—community checkpoints where car culture thrives, knowledge spreads, and enthusiasts help each other keep their machines on the road.If you care about how cars are built, why they break, and where the culture is headed, this conversation brings clarity and a few laughs. We sit down with newly appointed Houston Auto Show president Rochelle Salinas to unpack what it takes to steer a legacy event through inventory shortages, EV uncertainty, and shifting manufacturer strategies while still delivering experiences people can feel.Rochelle shares concrete updates: Camp Jeep is confirmed, a curated luxury showcase with Modern Luxury is on deck, and outdoor ride-and-drives with Toyota, Subaru, and Stellantis remain a highlight. We're adding expert-led tours that group vehicles by real buyer needs—SUVs, trucks, family cars—so you can compare fast, ask smart questions, and leave informed. Inspired by trips to LA, New York, and Chicago, we're bringing an overlanding zone to Houston, complete with camping setups and Scout partnerships to make it hands-on and family friendly.Community impact gets real with Houston Give Back Day, created with the partner Boat Show to spotlight roughly 20 nonprofits and on-site blood donation. We also celebrate the rapid growth of the student technician competition at Texas State Technical College in Rosenberg—23 teams, scholarships, cash, and tools—building the talent pipeline our industry needs. And for a dose of car culture history, Jeff revisits the Vertipak era, when Chevy shipped Vegas nose-down to pack more cars per railcar, a bold logistics gamble that changed how vehicles move across the country. We close with a detailed review of the 2026 Chevy Trax. It's a small SUV with a big value story: clean design, an excellent infotainment screen, surprisingly lively 1.2-liter turbo performance, and near-30 mpg combined, all at a compelling price point. Two family haulers, two very different promises. We put the 2025 Mazda CX-90 and the 2025 Chrysler Pacifica through their paces to find out whether driving joy or everyday ease should lead your next purchase. If you've ever stood in a dealer lot torn between a sleek three-row SUV and a minivan that just works, this head-to-head is your shortcut to clarity. We start with the CX-90's immediate curb appeal: balanced lines, tasteful chrome, and those painted arch moldings that make it feel premium without shouting. On the road, Mazda's 3.3-liter turbo lights up with 340 hp and 369 lb-ft, backed by an eight-speed that helps it feel quick and composed. Our long loop returned an impressive 26.7 mpg. Still, there are caveats. A fussy start-stop system and a first-to-second shift that nags in traffic chip away at an otherwise athletic package. And the infotainment? It's still behind the best, which matters when carpool chaos hits and you just need things to work. Then we slide into the Chrysler Pacifica, a minivan with real presence. The laid-back windshield and blacked-out pillars deliver clean lines, while sliding doors and a generous liftgate make every errand easier. Inside, practical storage and durable, comfortable seating keep the cabin tidy. Top trims add surprising luxury, and dual sunroofs brighten both rows. The V6 and nine-speed won't win stoplight sprints, but they deliver the right blend of power, quiet, and stability. The ace up its sleeve is Stow 'n Go: seats that vanish to create a flat, low cargo floor, then reappear when duty calls. Add competitive pricing and AWD, and you get a family machine that solves problems before they start.Looking for a driver's SUV with real power and premium vibes? The CX-90 makes every commute feel special. Need maximum flexibility, painless loading, and trip-ready storage on demand? The Pacifica proves why the minivan still reigns for real life. If this helped narrow your shortlist, share the episode with a friend, hit follow, and drop a review with the one feature you can't live without.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. A vinyl roof once meant instant glamour. We open with the style story that turned sedans into showroom stars, tracing how factory-installed tops promised convertible vibes without the compromise. From luxury badges to muscle icons, the trend peaked with opera windows and bold textures, then collided with reality—moisture trapped under fabric, hidden rust, and a slow retreat from the option sheets by the 1990s.Then the conversation downshifts into the shadows: the machines that were too rare, too radical, or too rule-breaking to live a normal life. We unpack the near-mythic 1969 Corvette ZL1 with its all-aluminum 427, Ford's aero-slick Torino King Cobra stopped by a NASCAR rule change, and Pontiac's full-size Catalina 2+2 eclipsed by the GTO spotlight. Alongside them sit the AMC Matador Machine that marketing wouldn't bless and a ghostly Ford Fairlane prototype that left almost no trace beyond rumors and a few photos. We close under the hood with Pontiac's experimental Super Duty 455 aluminum blocks—lighter, hotter, and nearly impossible to cool with the era's hardware. It's a tour of ambition meeting constraints: fashion versus longevity in vinyl roofs, engineering prowess versus budgets and rulebooks in outlaw muscle. If you love automotive history, restoration challenges, and the legends that almost made it, this ride is for you. As we head to the end of the year, with new 2026 models out or on the way, many buyers are looking for end of year deals.  We are doing a review of some of our reviews of popular models, just in case....A trail tamer or a family hauler—what truly fits your life right now? We put two 2025 standouts under the microscope: Chevrolet's Colorado ZR2, a factory-built off-road machine with real armor and beadlock-capable wheels, and Kia's Sorento SX Prestige with the X Pro package, a smart three-row SUV tuned for comfort, tech, and daily ease. Along the way, we unpack the details that matter beyond the brochure: how the ZR2's underbody camera and rocker protection change your confidence on rocky terrain, why the lifted suspension improves clearance but complicates step-in height, and how the TurboMax four-cylinder's 430 pound-feet moves the truck even when it sounds busy.Shift to the Sorento and the vibe changes. Dual 12.3-inch panoramic displays streamline navigation and driver info, while a digital rearview mirror widens your view in traffic. Heated and ventilated seats in both the front and second-row captain's chairs elevate comfort, and rear door sunshades beat tint when you don't want darkness at night. On the road, 17-inch wheels with taller sidewalls calm bumps and cut harshness in a way low-profile tires rarely can. With up to 4,500 pounds of towing in the 2.5-liter turbo AWD setup, the Sorento handles small trailers and weekend projects without drama, and city maneuverability stays stress-free.We also get practical about numbers. The Colorado's ZR2 pricing reflects serious hardware and a 7,700-pound tow rating when equipped, all in a package that still fits a standard garage. The Sorento's value story spans from accessible base models to a feature-rich SX Prestige around the high $40Ks as tested, competing in a crowded segment with a flexible third row that doesn't feel oversized. By the end, you'll know whether your miles call for rock gardens and skid plates or a calm commute with room for kids and cargo. If you enjoyed this breakdown, follow the show, share it with a friend who's shopping, and leave a quick review to help others find us. With Dodge thinking real hard about bringing the Hellcat, we take a look at two of our favorites.A three-row family hauler with 710 horsepower sounds like a punchline, but the 2023 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat Premium makes a strong case for everyday insanity. We dive into the details that matter: the captain's chairs that make carpool easy, the Laguna leather and heated second row that keep everyone happy, and the SRT Performance Pages that tempt you to explore every drive mode. From red Brembo brakes and 20 by 10 wheels to the 10.1-inch Uconnect system and a thundering Harman Kardon setup, the Durango blends comfort, tech, and raw force in a way few SUVs can touch. Then we talk numbers and nuance. A 6.2-liter supercharged V8 with 710 hp and 645 lb-ft moving 5,500 pounds to 60 in under five seconds feels unhinged, yet the competition suspension and AWD deliver a firm, stable ride on the highway. Towing up to 8,700 pounds, seeing real-world fuel economy in the teens, and confronting a six-figure sticker spark the bigger conversation: what are you really buying when you choose a Hellcat badge? We stack the Durango's capability against the short list of rivals and find that very few full-size SUVs play in this power league. To round out the picture, we jump into the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody and explore why a shape born in 2008 still sells out. Wide fenders, a flat-nose grille, and hood nostrils serve retro muscle with modern grip, while a thick SRT wheel, high-bolstered seats, and bulletproof Uconnect keep the cockpit focused. With 717 hp and 656 lb-ft on tap, the Challenger raises the eternal question: should you use all of it? We unpack the burnout myth, traction realities, daily drivability, and how the Hellcat compares with Mustang Mach 1, Camaro ZL1, and Charger Hellcat. If you're weighing a supercharged SUV that can tow the toys or a coupe that time-travels to the glory days, this conversation maps the trade-offs in power, price, and practicality. With the weather changing toward Winter, it is a good time to check our batteries, so we decided to revisit an earlier discussion to start ... the discussion.Ever wonder why your car starts strong some mornings and struggles on others? We take you under the hood of battery choices that actually affect daily reliability, from budget-friendly picks at big-box stores to premium designs built for harsh conditions, high-current audio builds, and weekend toys that sit for weeks at a time. Our goal is simple: help you pick a battery that fits your vehicle, your climate, and your lifestyle without wasting money on features you don't need.We move brand by brand through a no-nonsense ranking: EverStart and Interstate for accessible value, Motorcraft and AC Delco for OEM confidence, Bosch for dependable mid-tier coverage, and Antigravity for lithium lightness where every pound counts. For enthusiasts and workhorses, we break down why XS Power and Odyssey excel under heavy loads and frequent deep cycles, and how their warranties and construction translate into fewer headaches over years of use. Then we spotlight DieHard's enduring reputation and Optima's spiral-wound advantage, explaining RedTop vs YellowTop vs BlueTop so you match cranking power, deep-cycle resilience, and marine readiness to the job at hand.Along the way, we unpack AGM versus traditional flooded lead-acid, when lithium makes sense, and how to read warranty terms that actually protect you. We also cover practical buying tips: verifying group size and reserve capacity, understanding OEM recommendations, and deciding when paying more now saves you from a tow later. If your vehicle has added lights, winches, or a big audio system, or if it sits for long stretches, you'll walk away knowing which chemistry and brand can handle the load with fewer surprises. If this helped you think smarter about batteries, subscribe for more straight-talk car guidance, share with a friend who loves a weekend project, and leave a quick review to tell us which brand has lasted the longest for you.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. The headlines promised an EV future on rails, but the market had other plans. We open with a candid look at Porsche's sharp margin squeeze, the cost of a rapid electrification pivot, and why tariffs and a cooling Chinese luxury market are reshaping the brand's near-term outlook. From Taycan's steep first-year depreciation to the 911's long-haul value and the Macan/718 model timing gaps, we map the difference between bold strategy and buyer reality and explore what it means for enthusiasts, dealers, and anyone pricing a premium garage. Then we turn the spotlight to the auction lane, where nostalgia and scarcity spark big moves. A driver-grade ‘72 Nova that punches above its weight, vintage Toyota Land Cruisers and International Scouts riding a surge of love, and a shockingly cheap ‘88 Corvette remind us that taste cycles and condition trump assumptions. If you're hunting an entry ticket to the hobby, we highlight where the value still hides and where documentation and originality command a premium. We also go hands-on with the all-new 2025 Toyota 4Runner. Body-on-frame toughness stays, a 2.4-liter turbo replaces the old V6, and the cabin balances rugged materials with modern tech and a genuinely smart phone-charging nook. We dig into trims, pricing, towing confidence, highway comfort, and where the options list may overwhelm. Along the way, we flag the week's recalls you should check now, unpack the ripple effects of an aluminum plant fire that's idling Detroit lines, and weigh NASCAR's misfired branding gamble for what it says about fan identity and tone.If you care about where car culture is headed—values, supply chains, real-world ownership, and machines that still feel honest—this conversation brings the signal. A turquoise 1958 GMC Apache pulled us in with classic lines, then surprised us with a 2016 heartbeat: a 5.3 V8, 6L80, four-wheel discs, cold AC, and the kind of road manners that beg for long miles. With shop owner and builder Sonny Bennett at the mic, we dive into what it takes to craft a true driver from an old truck—why stock-style pulley systems matter, how water-based paint helps with real-world repairs, and why anyone claiming “no filler” is selling you a lumpy fantasy. Sonny's ethos is simple and sharp: fix it right or don't touch it, drive what you build, and let the miles be the proof. We also explore the business side of bodywork: initial estimates versus supplements, the hidden damage no one sees until teardown, and the big reasons Sonny refuses direct repair programs that let insurers dictate methods and margins. His shop serves the car and the customer, not a spreadsheet. That same clarity fuels his personal fleet stories—matching a '58 when a '55 was elusive, rebuilding a wrecked cab the right way, and finishing the Apache during the early days of COVID when the shop was deemed essential. The result? A classic that gets 21 mpg and cruises to Gulfport without a hiccup. The ride continues with a high-dollar Nova that took home top trophies before popping an engine on the return trip, proving that reliability is earned on the road, not on a stage. Then there's the 1967 Camaro project, acquired with a trove of pro-touring parts and a decades-old backstory involving a hot tub trade. We round it out with our racing calendar—Talladega, F1 in Austin, NHRA dates—and a fast lap through auto history, from Packard's twin six to the Hydramatic and the El Camino. We close on EV news and incentives fading, with automakers stepping in to keep prices competitive. If you love honest shop wisdom, restomod ingenuity, and the thrill of cars built to be driven, you'll feel right at home. Skip the time machine and grab the keys—we're charting five Renaissance festivals worth the drive, then mashing the throttle on a set of street-legal legends before closing with a grounded, real-world review of the 2025 Toyota 4Runner. We start with why people keep returning to these immersive fairs: the craft markets, roaming characters, dense 16th‑century villages, and the freedom to show up as a spectator or a knight in chainmail. From Pennsylvania's vineyard-backed village to Maryland's nine-week run and Minnesota's roomy grounds, we build toward Texas, the largest Ren fest in the U.S., where hundreds of shops, two dozen stages, and a sprawling campground turn weekends into stories you can't make up.Then we pivot to the machines that rewired car culture. The Chevy Impala Z11, Pontiac Catalina Super Duty, Ford Thunderbolt, Dodge Hemi Dart, and Ford Fairlane 500 R-Code prove how factory “ratings” barely hinted at the truth. Lightweight bodies, big-inch V8s, and limited production created cars that ran elevens and reset expectations for what a street-legal car could be. Rarity, auctions, and a little fear from the automakers themselves only added to the legend. To bring it all home, we take a clear-eyed look at the all-new 2025 Toyota 4Runner. Still body-on-frame and proud of it, the latest generation swaps the old V6 for a turbo four that tows with confidence, pairs with an eight-speed, and balances on-road comfort with real off-road bones. The interior stays rugged with smart tech options, but the third row feels cramped and the long list of trims can overwhelm. We sort what's worth paying for, where it stacks up against Wrangler and Bronco, and who will love it most.If you enjoyed the ride—from mead to muscle—follow the show, share it with a friend who needs a fall road trip idea, and leave a quick review to help more listeners find us.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. The morning started as a casual remote at Houston's Back to the Past car show and turned into a deep dive into 1910 luxury on wheels. We met Lee Brown and his extraordinary Bianchi limousine, a Milan-built brass-era time capsule that still runs, still turns heads, and still asks you to earn every mile. From bevel glass and flower vases to a chauffeur's exposed perch, the car lays out a social map of the Edwardian world where aristocrats rode in comfort and drivers braved the elements. We walk through the car's astonishing details and the rituals that bring it to life: five oil lamps, dual acetylene generators for the headlamps, a single electric dome light powered by a glass jar battery, and a hand-crank start that includes pressurizing the fuel tank and priming each cylinder. Under the bonnet, a magneto-fired, single casting four-cylinder shows the state of early engine design, while a flyball speedometer driven off the driveshaft measures speed without a single chip or wire. With the factory archives lost to WWII bombings, restoration means detective work—disassembling, learning, and erring on the safe side with lubrication and setup. It's preservation as practice, not a checkbox. We also map out five standout Renaissance festivals worth a fall road trip, from Maryland and Minnesota to the massive Texas Renaissance Festival in Todd Mission, plus a quick-hit events calendar and a notable industry fraud case. The thread tying it all together is culture on wheels: how cars store memory, how communities gather around craft, and how old machines still teach us patience, precision, and joy.If stories like this move you, hit follow, share with a friend, and leave a review telling us your favorite pre-war car detail or myth—we might feature it next week.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. A boom in a quiet hangar, a frantic call, and a beloved 1968 Dodge Coronet 440 suddenly fighting for its life—this one starts with a gut punch and turns into a blueprint for getting back up. We're broadcasting from the Back to the Past Car Show in Spring Branch, surrounded by alumni, barbecue smoke, and a lineup that stretches from American muscle to a fresh JDM class. Adalia Graves, from the Spring Branch High School Foundation shares the moment her numbers-matching Mopar caught fire, the shock of seeing firefighters cut into the hood, and how she's navigating stated-value insurance, buyback math, and the long road to a faithful restoration. We trade stories like only car people do: a 2010 Corvette convertible with character, a legendary high-mile C5, and the quiet joy of fixing what others would scrap. Then Jeff opens the vault on “too powerful for their time” factory legends—the Chevy Impala Z-11, Pontiac's Super Duty “Swiss Cheese” Catalina, Ford's Thunderbolt, and the Hemi Dart—machines with underrated horsepower and quarter-mile swagger that still bend the market and our imaginations. It's a tour through the era when Detroit built street-legal race cars to win on Sunday and sell on Monday, the DNA of everything we love about performance. All of it plays out on a campus rich with memories. Cornerstone Academy stands where Spring Branch High School once anchored a neighborhood that's changed but never lost its pride. Sponsors like GNS Automotive roll in deep, judges fan out, and the Foundation turns registration and tacos into scholarships and local support. The headlines say EVs are the future. The fine print says “not so fast.” We dig into a turbulent moment for electric vehicles as incentives fade, demand cools, and automakers rework plans in ways that actually make sense for drivers. From Acura and Nissan pauses to Ram and Porsche pivots, we unpack why hybrids and range-extended powertrains are stepping into the spotlight and what that means for costs, performance, and everyday usability. We also talk design evolution—how aerodynamics and smarter packaging have turned efficient cars from awkward experiments into desirable daily drivers. Think of the latest Prius: low drag, sleek lines, and real-world efficiency that doesn't scream “compromise.” But progress is messy, and our recall rundown proves it with issues ranging from wiring and battery cables to pedestrian warning sounds and tailgates. We keep it useful: what's affected, why it matters, and the simple steps to protect your car and your wallet. Then the fun part—real auction results on classics and cult favorites. A 1970 Cadillac DeVille convertible, a strong-spec '66 Chevy Nova, a rust-sensitive Datsun 280Z, a four-door '57 Bel Air cruiser, a driver-grade '66 Mustang, a tidy Triumph TR6, and a cheerful '71 Beetle convertible. Bastrop's Heroes & Hot Rides: Inside a 400-Car Main Street Takeover for Veterans

Engines, honor, and a Main Street that turns into a living museum—this is how a small Texas town makes car culture feel like a civic holiday. We sit down with the Bastrop Car Cruisers to map the two‑day plan: a laid‑back Friday cruise‑in and a sold‑out Saturday showcase capped at 400 cars. They walk us through the choreography you never see—numbered curbs, early‑morning parking crews, tight coordination with police and fire, and a judging system that keeps 33 classes fair by sending the same judges to the same cars. The result is a show people trust, and it fills fast.Bastrop's character powers the experience. Main Street is dense with restaurants and boutiques, the museum opens its doors to veterans, and the courthouse memorial anchors a veterans march led by bagpipers and ROTC. Proceeds fund veteran services, local food pantries, and automotive scholarships, backed by sponsors like Craig's Jewelry and Covert Chevrolet and a long list of donors fueling a silent auction. It's a reminder that great car shows don't just entertain—they invest back into the people who make them possible. We also take a detour into the “good old days” of buying a car with real window stickers from a Mach 1 Mustang, a C3 Corvette, and more—when destination charges were $74, $5 bought antifreeze, and $188 got you a four‑speed. Then we hand you five fall routes tailor‑made for sports cars and copilots: Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherohala Skyway into Nantahala, Talimena Scenic Byway, Arkansas's Pig Trail, and Scenic Highway 7. Curves, color, and small‑town stops turn miles into memories.Love cars, community, and a great story? Want fall roads that aren't just postcards but proper drives? We lay out a practical, enthusiast-friendly map of autumn routes that pair tight turns with big color: Blue Ridge Parkway's banked curves and layered foliage, the Cherokee and Nantahala forests with their 900–5,000 ft rhythm, Talimena's ridgetop vistas in the Ouachitas, and Arkansas's double feature—Highway 23's Pig Trail and the long, rolling canvas of Scenic Highway 7. You'll hear when to go for peak hues, where the panoramas hit hardest, and why these segments keep both the driver and the passenger happy. Then we flip through real-deal window stickers from the “good old days,” decoding how options once defined personality: four-speeds that changed everything, drag packs that whispered intent, and destination fees that existed long before today's eye-poppers. Without EPA labels cluttering the page, these Monroneys reveal a different buyer mindset—displacement, gearing, tires, and paint telling a clear story about purpose and pride. It's nostalgia with numbers, not just vibes. We close with a candid review of the 2025 Toyota Prius that might change your mental picture. Sleek lines, serious aero, and 220 combined horsepower turn a former punchline into a compelling daily. The two-cluster cockpit works well, the ride is smooth, and the real-world fuel numbers impress even without plugging in—while the plug-in capability adds flexible range for short commutes. Pricing spans the low 30s to mid-40s as tested, with few direct rivals matching its mix of efficiency, design, and usable torque. If your garage makes room for roads that wind and cars that earn their keep, this one's worth a test drive. If you enjoy these road-tested routes and candid reviews, follow the show, share with a friend who loves fall drives, and leave a quick rating—what route should we feature next?Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Shoppers are researching harder and buying faster, and the old guesswork about what to stock is getting expensive. We sit down with Shannon Pinto, VP of Statistical Surveys at Trader Interactive, to pull back the curtain on how real DMV registrations and real-time marketplace behavior from RV Trader, Cycle Trader, and Boatline turn into a clear picture of demand—down to the ZIP code, make, model, and even RV configurations like slide-outs and sleeping capacity. If you run an RV, marine, or powersports dealership, this is a tactical map for smarter inventory, sharper marketing, and better show results.Shannon explains how their team blends DMV records with first-party search and click data to show what's actually selling and what shoppers are hunting for right now. We walk through concrete use cases: choosing which units to haul to a combined auto and boat show, balancing new versus pre-owned mix by neighborhood, and targeting local demographics with creative that speaks to real buyers. We also talk access and privacy—why Statistical Surveys serves businesses, how private info stays protected, and how a Carfax-like history layer is rolling out for marine listings to help reduce risk for buyers and sellers.Beyond the interview, we round out the episode with racing highlights, a tour through pivotal auto history moments—from early EV experiments and Ford's moving assembly line to OPEC's shock and Tesla's supercharger buildout—and timely industry news, including supply chain impacts to aluminum-bodied trucks and a major lending investigation. The throughline is simple: when you align registrations (what sold) with marketplace intent (what's about to sell), you make better calls, faster. A sleeker Prius that's actually fun, EV incentives vanishing, and a sports car that resets your grin—this one brings the big swings and the small joys. We kick off by tearing down the old hybrid myth and putting the latest Toyota Prius through a real-world lens: punchy off-the-line torque, thoughtful ergonomics, and the kind of efficiency that makes weekly gas stops feel optional. From there, we head straight into the question everyone's asking: with federal EV tax credits gone, does the market hold or fold? Jack Nerad joins us to unpack what a true sink-or-swim moment looks like, why some automakers are delaying EVs and battery plants, and how supplier instability can ripple from factory floors to your local service bay.We don't forget the fun. Jack shares seat time in the Toyota GR86—a small, balanced coupe that channels RX-7 and Miata vibes, reminding us why analog feedback still matters. That joy ride fuels a candid talk on size creep: when a Highlander ends up near full-size and “improvement” means more mass, more screens, and a higher price, do we lose the simple cars many drivers actually want? We compare focus group theories with street-level needs, and we get blunt about the UX headache everyone feels: lane-keeping that fights the driver and hides the off switch. The fix isn't magic; it's human-centered design and clearer choices. We round out with a nostalgic detour through S&H Green Stamps—the original loyalty hustle—and a creative pivot: Jack's new crime novel and the debate over AI narration versus human performance. The throughline across it all is choice and clarity. Hybrids that feel alive. EVs that fit real lives. Driver aids that obey intent. And stories—on the road and on the page—that keep us leaning in.If you enjoy smart car talk with real-world takeaways, tap follow, share this episode with a friend who still thinks hybrids are dull, and drop a review with your take: are incentives a crutch or a bridge? A bargain part that looks perfect, installs easily, and quietly destroys your engine months later—that's the nightmare more drivers are waking up to. We dig into the growing wave of counterfeit auto parts sold online, from fake water pumps that toast head gaskets to sensors that never program and starters that die long before their time. As shop policies shift to protect both customers and reputations, we share how to source smarter, when to insist on OEM, and what “too good to be true” looks like in the real world. From there, we widen the lens. A rapid-fire recall rundown spans multiple brands and real safety risks—corroding starter relays tied to fires, camera failures that erase visibility, and steering components that can detach. We talk through how to check your VIN, schedule fixes, and understand why these campaigns matter. Then we have some fun with market surprises in “guess the sold price,” where a resto-mod '69 Camaro brings big money, a clean '82 Mustang tempts first-time buyers, and an unlikely Amphicar floats to a premium. The thread through it all is value—when it's real, when it's hype, and how to tell the difference. We round out the ride with racing highlights and a compact tour through auto history, connecting today's choices to yesterday's milestones—from Henry Ford's early credibility on the track to the Model T's scale, the Chevy-Ford rivalry, Plymouth's role in accessibility, and the elegance and exit of Duesenberg. Along the way, we unpack tire buying the smart way: using trusted installers, reading codes, and understanding OE fitment without falling for counterfeits. A shuttered high school, a two-story library, and a parking lot full of chrome—this is how a community keeps its story alive. We welcome Spring Branch Senior High School Alumni Foundation president Frank Klam to share the unlikely journey from a closed campus in 1985 to a living museum that safeguards trophies, uniforms, and hard-won memories the district nearly hauled away. Then we shift gears into the “Back to the Past” car show, a friendly, growing cruise-in where people's choice ballots matter, goodie bags land in eager hands, and a beloved barbecue team fires the pits to honor a friend who fed the event for years. We talk practicals—entry fees, how to participate, where to find it (9016 Westview Drive in Houston), and how the team is pulling in alumni and enthusiasts from across Spring Branch ISD and the broader Memorial area. The museum isn't a backdrop; it's a destination, linking street names to settlers and displaying a copy of an 1824 land grant from Esteban F. Austin, so visitors can connect cars they love to the neighborhood that shaped them. Frank also previews a new oral history project capturing prominent graduates—athletes, artists, and a four-star general—so future students can see what roots can grow.On the industry side, we parse fresh Corvette production data: ZR1 momentum suggests buyers still crave sound, speed, and sensation over hybrid balance. And we close with a street-level review of the Hyundai Sonata N Line—matte silver, 2.5L turbo punch, a column shifter that frees the console, and a ride that's smooth as butter—along with plainspoken notes on grip, seats, and sound that would take it from quick to compelling.Want to be part of it? The conversation moves from overcoming pain to embracing perspective, repentance, purpose, and legacy — inspiring listeners to become intentional about their spiritual and personal growth. Key Themes & Takeaways1. The Power of PerspectiveChoosing to see life as “half full” transforms suffering into learning.Every trial is an opportunity to ask, “What does God want to teach me through this?”2. Distraction & Spiritual WarfareModern distractions, especially technology, can derail spiritual focus.Satan's greatest tool is subtle distraction from divine purpose.7. Fall energy meets turbo torque as we jump from steins to stopwatches, mapping the most spirited Oktoberfests in the U.S. before tearing into “muscle cars” that talked big and drove small—then we strap into the 2025 Hyundai Sonata N Line to see what real-world performance feels like today. We start with pure festival joy: Denver turns six downtown blocks into keg bowling, stein hoists, and polka beats; Fredericksburg, Texas doubles down on Hill Country hospitality with 50 beers and a proud German thread; Helen, Georgia leans into storybook Bavarian architecture along the Chattahoochee; and Cincinnati's Zinzinnati packs in hundreds of thousands for brats, bands, and a gleefully chaotic chicken dance plus those crowd-pleasing dachshund races. It's a tour of local flavor, beer culture, and family-friendly spectacle that proves tradition thrives when a city makes it its own. Then we flip the script and call out the pretenders. From the Camaro Z28 and Mustang II Cobra II to bloated nameplates wearing legendary badges, we break down how emissions-era limits, weight creep, and marketing overreach diluted true performance. The takeaway is clear: a stripe package can't outrun physics. That honesty sets the stage for a modern surprise—Hyundai's Sonata N Line. With a 2.5L turbo four, 290 hp, and 311 lb-ft, it delivers punchy acceleration, smooth shifts from an eight-speed, and a chassis tuned for comfort without feeling sleepy. We dig into the sleek lighting, fastback profile, clean interior with a wide digital display, and the clever column twist shifter that frees up the console. We also call our shots: ventilated seats would be great, the stock tires need more grip, and a selectable exhaust note would match the car's hot-rod attitude. If you care about festivals, car culture, and where everyday performance is heading, this ride is for you. A friendly grudge, a lit tree, and a time slip—few things capture real car culture like club-versus-club drag racing. We sit down to explore the Texas Muscle Car Club Challenge and how it turns raw horsepower into community, safety, and bragging rights across eighth-mile tracks statewide. Even when a guest's signal fades, the story stays clear: organize the adrenaline, race where it's safe, and bring home a slip that proves it.From there, we open the hood on the industry's moving parts. Dealers are quietly finding gold in their service lanes, making real-time offers to maintenance customers to replace shrinking lease returns and tight auction supply. We break down the math, the goals, and what it means for anyone weighing a repair bill against positive equity. Then we zoom out to used-car retail's evolving landscape—Carvana's rebound, why some online car buys feel effortless while others come with surprise steps—and the fine print that separates convenience from frustration. The news cycle adds more heat: potential truck tariffs have Detroit's big names angling for advantage, and the EV conversation keeps running on two parallel roads—ambition and practicality. We talk charging costs that hit $50 for a 20-minute session, the gap between ad promises and road-trip reality, and the local conditions where electric shines. It's all wrapped in the heartbeat of the scene: Tailpipes & Tacos returning to Katy, a full slate of cruise-ins, and the kind of Saturday mornings where chrome, coffee, and community collide. If you love honest racing, straight talk on the car market, and the events that bring people together, this one's for you. Ever felt your stomach drop at the top of a blind hill? We handed the wheel to Olivia, a 21-year-old nursing student and brand-new Bronco owner, and watched a long day in the Texas Hill Country turn nerves into mastery. With guidance from veteran auto journalist Sue Mead, Olivia moves from classroom theory to real trail work—learning why GOAT Modes matter, how hill descent control actually feels, and where a forward-facing camera turns guessing into precision. The payoff arrives on a feature aptly nicknamed “roller coaster,” when faith in the process replaces fear of the unknown. We dig into what the Bronco Off-Roadeo delivers for drivers at every level: structured coaching, expert spotters, and a terrain course designed to show how lockers, low range, and smart calibration create grip when the world tilts. New Bronco owners get a complimentary pass within a year, but anyone can book a half-day program and bring guests along. Beyond the dust, the skills transfer directly to night drives on unlit back roads and winter commutes—scan wider, place tires deliberately, and keep momentum measured. Olivia's biggest takeaway is simple and powerful: the vehicle doesn't want you to crash, but it's your steady hands and clear head that make the difference. Then we pivot from trail to tarmac nostalgia with a frank look at muscle cars that wore the jacket but didn't have the jab—emissions-era legends that taught us the cost of letting marketing outrun engineering. To close, we map five Oktoberfests worth your miles—from La Crosse's riverside tradition and Denver's keg bowling to Fredericksburg's Hill Country polka, Helen's Bavarian lean-in, and Cincinnati's colossal Zinzinnati celebration. Come for the Bronco insights, stay for the car culture stories, and leave with a plan to drive smarter on every surface. If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend who loves the Bronco or good car stories, and drop us a review with the one off-road feature you can't live without.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Buckle up for a high-octane exploration of automotive industry trends and challenges that are reshaping the market landscape. We dive deep into the alarming rise of "credit bust out" scams targeting dealerships, where criminals orchestrate the purchase of multiple vehicles through falsified loan applications before credit reports can catch up. One brazen example involved financing six vehicles worth $385,000 through five different lenders in just four days—a stark warning for dealers and lenders alike. The electric vehicle revolution faces a critical juncture as the $7,500 federal tax credit expires and California Governor Newsom reverses course on state subsidies. Major automakers, including GM, Toyota, and Volkswagen, are pushing back against aggressive emissions standards that would require up to 56% of new vehicles to be electric by 2032. The consensus among our hosts? Perhaps it's time for EVs to compete on their own merits without government assistance.Family drama takes center stage in Massachusetts, where brotherly love has given way to courtroom battles at a Toyota and Volvo dealership. The shocking lawsuit alleges financial misconduct, including the termination of salary and health benefits while one brother was recovering from throat cancer. Meanwhile, American Honda pulls the plug on the Acura ZDX after just one model year, and aftermarket giant First Brands Group prepares for bankruptcy with $6 billion in debt. There's encouraging news on the regulatory front as the new NHTSA administrator pledges to modernize outdated rules that hamper innovation. Navigating the murky waters of auto body repairs just got easier thanks to an innovative approach that puts transparency and consumer choice at the forefront. Ilan Mandil, founder of OttoFixIt, joins us to unveil how AI technology is revolutionizing the way drivers approach collision repair estimates. By simply snapping photos of vehicle damage, consumers can now receive preliminary cost projections before setting foot in a body shop – finally addressing the anxiety-inducing question: "How much is this going to cost me?"The conversation dives deep into the stratified world of auto body shops, from manufacturer-certified facilities using exclusively OEM parts to independent shops with varying quality standards. Mandil expertly breaks down how OttoFixIt vets repair facilities (requiring 4.5+ star ratings across hundreds of reviews) and why having multiple quotes empowers consumers to make informed decisions based on their specific circumstances and vehicle value. Jeff shares a cautionary tale about his Cadillac SRX repair gone wrong, highlighting exactly why finding reputable repair shops matters. Our journey through automotive culture continues with Jeff's fascinating exploration of badge engineering – the practice of selling identical vehicles under different brand names. From the embarrassing Cadillac Cimarron (a glorified Chevrolet Cavalier) to Volkswagen's triple-identity vehicles and GM's global rebadging strategies, we uncover how manufacturers have sometimes confused consumers with their marketing sleight of hand. The episode rounds out with Marrs' entertaining guide to the Texas State Fair, featuring everything from the iconic Big Tex statue to butter sculptures, thrilling rides, and of course, the comprehensive auto show. The century-long story of how we value cars has dramatically shifted from dog-eared pages to digital databases. Before the internet, car dealers, buyers, and even divorce courts relied on physical booklets like Kelly Blue Book and NADA guides to determine fair market prices. These guides weren't just reference materials—they were essential tools that brought transparency to a notoriously opaque market.NADA began tracking vehicle values in 1922, creating a standardized system that expanded far beyond dealership lots. During World War II, as manufacturing materials were diverted to the war effort, these guides became crucial in preventing price gouging when used car demand skyrocketed. Even government assistance programs consulted these books when determining eligibility, considering vehicle value as part of an applicant's assets. The digital revolution changed everything. What started with experimental floppy disks and CD-ROMs in the 1990s evolved into sophisticated online platforms delivering real-time valuations based on multiple factors. By 2017, the last physical guides rolled off the presses, marking the end of an era but the beginning of a more efficient system for everyone involved in buying and selling vehicles. This week's episode also covers significant recalls, including a serious Ford steering column defect affecting over 115,000 vehicles. We play our popular "Guess the Sold Price" game with classics like a 1967 Mustang convertible and a stunning 1932 Ford Roadster with flames. Plus, we honor Tsutumo Tom Matano, the visionary designer of the Mazda MX-5 Miata who recently passed away at 78.Whether you're a car enthusiast, industry professional, or simply curious about automotive history, this episode offers fascinating insights into how technology continues to transform the way we value, buy, and sell vehicles. Randy Borchiding's colorful journey from model car enthusiast to custom paint specialist unfolds with charm and practical wisdom. What started with Testors spray cans and a childhood model contest victory evolved into a full-fledged career creating custom colors for show-stopping vehicles. Randy pulls back the curtain on his early days, revealing how he built his first professional paint booth using nothing more than PVC pipes, plastic sheeting, and box fans with air conditioning filters. "Don't feel like you can't accomplish something just literally in your garage because you don't have a $50,000 box," he encourages, sharing how cars painted in this humble setup went on to compete at prestigious shows like the Grand National Roaster Show. The science behind the art proves fascinating as Randy explains the critical role of temperature in modern urethane painting. Working in environments below 50 degrees can leave paint jobs permanently sticky or mushy – a costly lesson he learned firsthand. His process for creating custom colors evolved organically from customer requests to modify OEM shades, resulting in approximately 50 signature colors that he can reproduce consistently.Currently preparing a hot pink 1968 Roadrunner (aptly named "Ransberry") for the upcoming SEMA show, Randy shares the pressure and timeline of readying show cars for major events. His other project, a 1968 Oldsmobile convertible, demonstrates his versatility – maintaining period-correct aesthetics while incorporating modern performance with an LS3 engine disguised to look like an original Oldsmobile powerplant. The episode also features Jeff's Motor Minute discussing NASCAR's potential horsepower increase to 750 for the 2026 season, followed by Don's enthusiastic review of the 2025 Mazda MX5 Miata Anniversary Edition. Despite having just 181 horsepower, the Miata's exceptional power-to-weight ratio delivers thrilling performance with remarkable efficiency.Subscribe to the In Wheel Time Car Talk Show for more automotive insights, expert interviews, and honest reviews every Saturday from 10-noon Central Time on inwheeltime.com, YouTube, and Facebook.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Mercedes and Andy Lilienthal take us on an exhilarating journey through North America's longest road rally - the Alcan 5000. Covering a staggering 5,500 miles from Seattle to Alaska, this husband-wife team pushed their 2026 Honda Passport Trail Sport to its limits across punishing terrain and secured an impressive second-place overall finish. The conversation reveals the fascinating format of this epic adventure: daily time-speed-distance rally segments connected by long-distance travel through some of the continent's most remote regions. While competitors in the "unlimited" class relied on sophisticated rally computers, the Lilienthals triumphed in their "seat of pants" class using nothing more than a $6 calculator, a kitchen timer, and raw mathematical calculations.Their Honda Passport proved the perfect companion, conquering approximately 900 miles of dirt and gravel without a single flat tire. The couple details how they tackled optional "extreme control" routes that earned them the "Go Farther Award," including an expedition to the Arctic Circle through mud-drenched paths and treacherous conditions that left their vehicle "caked full of mud."Beyond the mechanical challenges, the couple shares insights into the human element of rally competition - how they navigate the pressure-cooker environment as partners, their strategies for effective communication under stress, and the camaraderie formed with competitors from around the world. With good humor, Andy admits that Mercedes "sits on the right of the car because she's always right."Having competed in both summer and winter Alcan rallies, the Lilienthals offer perspective on the additional challenges winter brings, from survival concerns in temperatures reaching -50°F to blizzard conditions and closed highways. Their experiences highlight the remarkable resilience required when facing nature's most extreme conditions.Whether you're a rally enthusiast, an adventure seeker, or simply curious about extraordinary automotive challenges, this conversation captures the spirit of pushing boundaries and finding joy in the journey. Buckle up for a deep dive into the automotive industry's latest battle with tariffs that could reshape how we buy and maintain our vehicles. Automakers and suppliers have formally urged the Trump administration to reconsider unpredictable tariff expansions, warning that these policies make investing in America increasingly difficult. The financial impact? A potential $4,600 price increase per vehicle within three years, according to the Center for Automotive Research—a sobering prospect when average new car prices already hover around $50,000.The conversation takes a personal turn as we explore the emotional versus practical considerations of keeping older vehicles. One host shares the dilemma of his daughter's beloved 2007 Ford Focus with 185,000 miles—is the sentimental value worth the maintenance costs and logistics of storing it for occasional use? This sparks a broader discussion about how consumers might adapt to rising costs, including a potential revival of salvaging parts from junkyards as repair expenses climb due to tariff-affected components. Our Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid review showcases why this three-row SUV deserves attention despite its $52,610 starting price. With actual adults fitting comfortably in the third row (thanks to its six-inch length increase over the standard Highlander), impressive fuel economy averaging 29.7 mpg over 475 miles, and what we call "the best-looking front fascia" in Toyota's lineup, it delivers substantial value for families needing space without sacrificing efficiency. We also cover the latest automotive recalls, auction results from Hemmings, and an update on Tony Stewart's remarkable recovery after a 300+ mph NHRA crash.Ready to join the conversation? On September 22, 2025, Nvidia announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI, which includes an investment of up to $100 billion - The agreement will help deploy at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems, which will include millions of its GPUs. The first phase is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2026, using Nvidia's Vera Rubin platform. Autism Link - Shares of Kenvue (KVUE) are trading lower largely due to reports from the White House and HHS suggesting a forthcoming warning linking prenatal use of acetaminophen (Tylenol's active ingredient) to autism risk. - Investors are concerned that such a warning could lead to regulatory action, changes in labeling requirements, litigation risk, or reduced demand for one of KVUE's key products. It's estimated that Tylenol accounts for approximately 7-9% of KVUE's total revenue. - The company has strongly denied any scientific basis for the link, but the uncertainty itself is hurting sentiment. - Finally, this also comes on top of recent weak financial performance: KVUE posted a Q2 revenue decline of 4% and cut its full-year guidance on August 7. - - Lawsuits to follow... The region's International Dark Sky designation makes it perfect for witnessing the Milky Way in breathtaking clarity. Our final destination takes us to mysterious Caddo Lake on the Texas-Louisiana border, where ancient bald cypress trees draped with Spanish moss create an almost mystical autumn atmosphere perfect for kayaking and boat tours. We also examine the fascinating evolution of racing helmet technology, from simple leather caps to today's carbon fiber and Kevlar marvels, and review the 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid, which combines impressive fuel economy with genuine three-row comfort thanks to its extended dimensions.Whether you're planning your next road trip or simply dreaming of autumn adventures, join us to discover why fall might be the perfect season to explore Texas. The battle between dirt and asphalt tracks, the delicate ecosystem of regional racing, and the high-stakes fall racing season take center stage in this revealing conversation with motorsports commentator Rodney Rodriguez. As Texas transitions into fall, circle track racing enters its most exciting phase with championship battles heating up and big money events drawing competitors from across state lines. Rodriguez highlights the SuperTex 600 at Rocket Raceway Park—a minimal-rules competition offering a potential $25,000 prize—as an example of grassroots racing at its finest, where "you can damn near run anything you have" from bombers to modifieds.Behind this excitement lurks a troubling industry trend: historic venues like Devil's Bowl Speedway closing permanently, forcing racers to travel greater distances while remaining tracks fail to coordinate effectively. The podcast reveals how personal rivalries and business pressures prevent track operators from collaborating on schedules, ultimately hurting car counts and fan attendance. As Rodriguez explains, "Tracks intentionally scheduled on top of each other...that cuts your car count down, that cuts your fan count, it divides the racers."The conversation expands to critique both NASCAR's Next Gen car for being "too smart" and diminishing competition, and IndyCar's abbreviated season that causes the series to "fall off the map" despite having exceptional racing. These industry-wide challenges reflect a motorsport landscape at a crossroads—balancing tradition with innovation while fighting for audience attention.Whether you're a dedicated race fan or simply curious about the culture of American motorsports, this episode offers invaluable insights into the passion, economics, and challenges shaping racing's future. The digital threat landscape for the automotive industry has never been more dangerous. Legendary FBI operative and cybersecurity expert Eric O'Neill joins us to reveal how cyber attackers are targeting major manufacturers with devastating results. Right now, Jaguar Land Rover's production sits paralyzed by a ransomware attack that's already lasted three weeks with no end in sight. These aren't isolated incidents. Just last year, a similar attack against CDK Global crippled 15,000 US dealerships, causing nearly a billion dollars in losses. What's truly alarming is how these breaches ripple through the entire automotive ecosystem - from manufacturers to suppliers to your personal data. Eric breaks down exactly how these attacks happen, why they're so difficult to prevent, and what makes the $18 trillion cybercrime industry so dangerously effective. But it's not just corporations at risk. Eric shares chilling stories of how ordinary people fall victim to sophisticated "phishing" scams through simple text messages that evolve into friendship before turning predatory. The conversation takes a terrifying turn as he explains how elderly victims are "fattened up" before having their life savings stolen through elaborate confidence schemes. We also explore automotive safety from a different angle with Jeff's exploration of racing helmet evolution - from simple leather caps to today's carbon fiber marvels with potential heads-up display integration. And for those seeking autumn adventures, Marrs provides some Texas fall travel tips, from the colorful foliage of Lost Maple State Natural Area to the wine trails of the Texas Hill Country.Want to protect yourself in this digital battlefield? Eric's upcoming book "Spies, Lies and Cybercrime" teaches you to think like a spy to recognize attacks before they happen. Step into the extraordinary world of the Hemi Hideout as we chat with owner John Hovis about his remarkable journey from car enthusiast to curator of one of the most impressive automotive sanctuaries in Texas. Surrounded by vintage neon signs and classic cars, John reveals how what began as a personal "man cave" evolved into a destination venue that now hosts everything from corporate events to weddings. His collection of 24 vehicles—half powered by legendary Hemi engines—forms the heart of this automotive paradise, but it's the community spirit that truly defines the space. Every rental fee is matched by John and donated to local charities, transforming his passion project into a force for good. The conversation takes a fascinating turn as John explains the hideout's innovative geothermal cooling system, which uses heat exchangers submerged 21 feet deep in an on-site pond. While this eco-friendly approach might not pay for itself during his lifetime, it reflects the forward-thinking approach that permeates everything about this unique venue. We shift gears to discuss the current state of electric vehicles in America, sharing personal experiences with charging infrastructure challenges and the practical limitations of EV ownership. Despite improvements in charging technology, our real-world stories highlight why many Americans—including dedicated car enthusiasts—remain hesitant to make the switch from gasoline to fully electric vehicles.Whether you're fascinated by classic cars, interested in alternative energy solutions, or simply enjoy authentic conversations among passionate automotive enthusiasts, this episode offers an intimate look at how car culture continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. Ever wondered what happens when your brand-new dream car turns into a mechanical nightmare? Hovanes Margarian, known as "The Lemon Lawyer," pulls back the curtain on the fascinating world of automotive consumer protection law in this eye-opening conversation. From his unique garage-turned-law-office where client vehicles undergo inspection alongside his personal collection (including a Ferrari SF90 Spider), Margarian reveals the inner workings of lemon law cases that have defined his 20-year career. With remarkable candor, he explains how manufacturers often make strategic decisions about settling claims based not just on case merit, but on their own financial timing and broader liability concerns. The conversation delivers surprising insights that every car owner should know. Margarian explains why class action settlements frequently serve manufacturers better than consumers, offering modest compensation while extinguishing potentially valuable individual refund claims. He also shares how the timeline from claim to resolution can vary dramatically depending on a manufacturer's willingness to acknowledge defects.Beyond legal strategies, the episode takes fascinating detours into automotive technology and history. Jeff explores car innovations directly descended from NASA's space program – from memory foam seats to anti-lock brakes – while Mike guides us through the 178-mile stretch of Route 66 that winds through Texas, highlighting iconic stops like Cadillac Ranch and the official midpoint between Chicago and Los Angeles.Whether you're dealing with a problematic vehicle or simply fascinated by the intersection of automotive culture and consumer rights, this episode delivers valuable knowledge wrapped in entertaining conversation.
