The sharpest cuts came after the federal EV tax credit expired, with the Hyundai IONIQ 5 leading the slide at a 13.8% drop of over $7,000, followed by the Chevrolet Equinox EV at nearly $4,000 off — six models in total posted drops above 5%. FORD TEASES EUROPE CAR RETURN AFTER FIESTA, FOCUSFord CEO Jim Farley used the Q4 2025 earnings call to signal "exciting plans" for passenger cars in Europe, framing the comeback as a selective, profitable return to specific segments rather than a volume land grab. Two new EVs built on Renault's Ampere platform are expected in the subcompact segment from the Ford–Renault partnership, with new passenger cars set to start arriving in 2027 under a new dedicated Europe passenger-car leadership role. UBER EXPANDS EV RIDES ACROSS EIGHT UK CITIESUber has rolled out its EV ride option to eight more UK cities — Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Cambridge, Belfast and Merseyside — at standard UberX prices, after falling short of its pledge to run an all-electric London fleet by end-2025. Only 40% of London miles are now covered by EVs, with UK General Manager Andrew Brem citing charging access as "the biggest barrier," prompting Uber to announce driver support measures including discounted home and public charging in partnership with Pod Point. BMW TALKS PRICE FLOOR TO DODGE EU MINI DUTYBMW and the European Commission are in advanced talks to replace the EU's 20.7% countervailing duty on China-made Mini BEVs with a minimum import price agreement, according to Handelsblatt — covering the Mini Cooper Electric and Mini Aceman, both built at BMW's Zhangjiagang joint venture with Great Wall Motor. The approach would mirror the "price undertaking" the EU accepted from Volkswagen Anhui in early February, which freed the Cupra Tavascan from countervailing duties in exchange for a confidential price floor, volume cap and EU investment commitments. EU CITY BUS SALES HIT 60% ZERO-EMISSIONSix in ten new city buses registered across the EU in 2025 were zero-emission — 56% battery-electric and 4% fuel cell — a dramatic jump from just 12% when the Clean Vehicles Directive was adopted in 2019. Five member states hit 100% zero-emission city bus sales in 2025 (Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia and Slovenia), and Transport & Environment says a fully zero-emission EU city bus market is achievable as early as 2028.MG2 SET FOR 2027 UK LAUNCH AT £20,000MG will enter the electric supermini segment in 2027 with the all-new MG2, targeting a starting price of around £20,000 (~$25,200), to take on rivals including the Renault 5, Citroën e-C3, Fiat Grande Panda and the incoming VW ID. Polo. The car will use the newer E3 architecture from the MG4 Urban, run front-wheel drive with a torsion-beam rear axle for cost efficiency, and feature a 12.8-inch touchscreen with physical climate controls — a reveal is expected in the second half of 2026. MG CONFIRMS MGS9 PHEV SEVEN-SEATER FOR UKMG will launch the MGS9 plug-in hybrid SUV in the UK later in 2026 as its new flagship, offering three full adult-sized rows and targeting rivals such as the Peugeot 5008, Kia Sorento and Skoda Kodiaq at a value-led price point. The model already holds a five-star Euro NCAP rating and could reach UK showrooms as early as summer 2026, extending MG's line-up to 11 models. AUSTRALIA NVES DATA SHOWS HYBRIDS DO THE HEAVY LIFTAustralia's National Vehicle Emissions Standard published its first half-year performance data (July–December 2025), showing EVs made up roughly 12% of new vehicles supplied, with about two-thirds of manufacturers — including BYD and Polestar — meeting their fleet-wide emissions targets. Petrol- and hybrid-focused brands such as Mazda and Hyundai fell short and face penalties if they don't improve, while the data reveals that near-term emissions gains are leaning more on efficient hybrids than on full EVs. LECTRON ADAPTERS WIN UL 2252 SAFETY CERTIFICATIONLectron has earned UL 2252 safety certification across its full range of EV charging adapters — covering J3400, CCS1 and J1772 in both AC and DC variants — with its two DC adapters handling up to 500 amps at 1,000 volts for peak power of 500 kW, and built-in thermal sensors that trigger derating if heat rises during fast charging. The certification comes as the North American charging landscape remains split between NACS and CCS1 on DC networks and J1772 on AC infrastructure, making a certified bridging adapter an increasingly essential tool for EV drivers navigating the transition.

Prices keep climbing, patience keeps thinning, and the smartest car on the lot might be the one that's two or three years old. We sit down to explore why a crowd-pleaser like the VW ID. Buzz is slipping from the U.S. launch calendar, how an $80,000 price tag changes the conversation, and where EVs still struggle to deliver everyday convenience for people without home charging. From the Detroit Auto Show preview to the North American Car, Utility, and Truck of the Year buzz, we connect the headlines to real buyer decisions. Our take on affordability gets practical fast: a $5,000 difference can flip a purchase when the competing vehicle offers more features or utility. We break down why late-model off-lease cars remain the sweet spot, even as the market feels the aftershocks of COVID-era production cuts. Then we zoom out to tariffs and USMCA dynamics shaping what gets built in the U.S., and why the playing field among American, European, and Asian brands feels more level than ever. With fewer true lemons on sale, lifetime cost and ownership experience become the real story.Reliability and complexity take center stage as we examine turbo longevity, hybrid durability, and the sticker shock of modern repairs, like a $6,000 turbo swap. On the EV front, the pain points are clear: battery longevity anxiety, charging standards and adapters, and the simple truth that the five-minute gas stop still fits many lives better than public chargers. We round things out with a quick, candid guide to RV laws most people ignore, from weight limits and seatbelts to boondocking and propane safety. If you care about getting the best value for your money, understanding how policy nudges production, and choosing tech that won't bite you later, you'll find this conversation timely and useful. Anyone who owns or has driven a new car lately might have come across the annoying beeps and bongs that happen when you get near the speed limit or look too long at the radio, or perhaps get close to the edge of your lane on the road. These safety features are known as ADAS - but they are often annoying. We catch up with Shawn Ticehurst from NRMA Insurance's Research Lab about what they are doing to research the feelings of drivers toward these systems. Plus, we've driven the all-electric Kombi - the VW ID.Buzz, and Ben joins us to talk about his classic wagon as he considers an electric wagon. Get in touch, text or WhatsApp to 0477 657 657.

Designing Sound: Caitlin Stewart on Leon Speakers' Mission to Lead by Design Caitlin Stewart of Leon Speakers joins Convo By Design to talk about design-first thinking in an audio-driven world. From Ann Arbor to the global design stage, Leon Speakers has carved out a unique identity—not as a technology company, but as a design company that happens to make exceptional audio and concealment solutions. Caitlin shares how Leon engages the architecture and design community, cultivates relevance in a shifting industry, and builds partnerships that challenge conventions of form, function, and beauty. Background & Role: Caitlin's work as Director of Sales for residential at Leon Speakers, leading account managers and shaping residential market growth. Leon's Identity: Founded in 1997, Leon is entering its 30th year as a design-first company—blending sound, aesthetics, and concealment with creativity. Design Integration: How Leon's “Lead by Design, Leave Nothing Unfinished” philosophy drives the balance of form and function. Relevance in the Industry: Shifting influence from general contractors to architects and designers, and Leon's effort to stay essential in conversations that shape environments. Inspiration & Missed Opportunities: Why designers need exposure to products at shows like CEDIA and ICFF, and the challenges of communicating AV in relevant, non-technical language. Partnership with A&D Community: Meeting designers where they are, co-designing products, and listening to their needs around fixtures, finishes, and materiality. Industry Challenges: Designers often photoshop out tech in portfolio images—highlighting the need for intentional, beautiful integration of AV. Educational Outreach: Designer visits to Leon's Ann Arbor factory, engaging directly with materiality and finishes to bridge the language gap. Innovation at Leon: Hand-woven acoustic treatments, creative concealment solutions, evolving product frames for video walls, and form-function collaboration. Partnership Opportunities: Caitlin's advice to designers—start casual, share ideas, reach out. Leon thrives on nimble, creative collaborations that spark innovation.

News and Updates: Waymo begins robotaxi testing in New York City, deploying up to eight vehicles in Manhattan and Brooklyn with safety drivers until Sept. 2025. While Alphabet hails it as a milestone, critics like former mayor Bill de Blasio and union leaders slam the move as unsafe and job-killing. DOT insists safety rules will keep pedestrians protected. Waymo is eyeing Dallas, DC, and Miami for 2026 after logging 10M+ rides nationwide. IRS offers EV buyers last-minute relief ahead of the Sept. 30 sunset of the $7,500 federal tax credit under Trump's Big Beautiful Bill. Buyers only need a signed contract and payment in place by the deadline—delivery can come later. Newly eligible models for 2025 include Tesla Cybertruck, Kia EV6/EV9, Hyundai Ioniq 5/9, and Cadillac Vistiq. Losers include Rivian, Nissan Leaf, VW ID.4, and Chevy Bolt. Melania Trump is rebranded the “First Lady of Technology” by the NY Post, launching the Presidential AI Challenge for K-12 students. Inspired by her own use of a deepfake to narrate her audiobook, she says AI can “ignite innovation” in schools. The contest offers up to $10,000 prizes and national recognition in June 2026. Critics point to risks of kids bonding with AI chatbots—72% of teens already use them, some with disturbing outcomes. Data centers face growing backlash over water use. A Lawrence Berkeley Lab report warns U.S. facilities consumed 17B gallons of cooling water in 2023, projected to double or quadruple by 2028. Google and Meta disclosed that ~95% of their water use comes from data centers. Communities in the Great Lakes, Texas, and abroad are raising alarms as companies eye water-stressed regions to build AI server farms. Google shares first-ever environmental footprint of Gemini AI prompts. A single text query uses the energy of watching TV for 9 seconds, five drops of water, and emits 0.03g of CO₂—33x more efficient than last year thanks to software and renewable energy. However, the report excludes image/video generation and AI training. DOE projects U.S. data centers could eat up to 12% of electricity by 2028. Bloomberg warns AI is draining water in drought zones. Roughly two-thirds of new U.S. data centers since 2022 are in high water-stress areas, including Texas and Arizona. A 100MW facility consumes 2M liters daily—equal to 6,500 households. Microsoft and OpenAI are experimenting with closed-loop and immersion cooling, but most of the industry still relies on water-intensive evaporative cooling. Protests have erupted in Chile, the Netherlands, and Uruguay over water use.

This week on Autonomy Markets, Grayson Brulte and Walter Piecyk discuss Tesla's robotaxi launch in Austin, OpenAI's growing autonomous driving ambitions, Waymo's future and Foxconn's strategic partnership with Elektrobit. The launch of Tesla's robotaxi has sparked polarized reactions with some hailing it as revolutionary, while others have focused on the safety attendant and the limited ODD (Operational Design Domain). During the episode, Grayson and Walt discussed how this measured rollout contrasts with the overhyped expectations, while also emphasizing that no company, including Waymo has scaled robotaxis without any operational issues. Beyond Tesla, the hosts explored how Foxconn's new partnership with Continental's Elektrobit could position it as a contract manufacturer for next-generation autonomous fleets, potentially opening doors for tech giants with autonomous driving ambitions, OpenAI, Nvidia, and Meta to enter the sector. While Waymo is the clear leader in the development and commercialization of robotaxis today, their long-term business ambitions remain shrouded in mystery.Episode Chapters0:00 Tesla Robotaxi Launch6:19 Robotaxi and Waymo Cost Structure Comparsion10:59 Tele-Operations13:28 The Growth of Robotaxi15:15 NHTSA19:00 What's Next for Robotaxi?24:36 Uber & Waymo Open Atlanta Market25:49 Waymo at Airports26:33 Waymo Needs Policy Help29:25 Will Waymo and Lyft Be Friends Again?30:24 Does Waymo Want to Be in the Robotaxi Business?33:49 Is Travis Kalanick Buying Pony AI's U.S. Operations with Uber's Backing?36:30 Foxconn / Elektrobit Partnership43:17 Will Waymo Via Ever Come Back?44:03 Autonomous Delivery Bots47:44 VW ID. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1073: Six EVs crack the top 10 of Cars.com's American-Made Index, Tesla pauses Cybertruck and Model Y production, and the U.S. Senate gives crypto a win with new stablecoin regulations, clearing the path for mainstream adoption.Electric vehicles are leading the charge in U.S. manufacturing impact, as revealed by Cars.com's 2025 American-Made Index. For the first time, EVs make up the majority of the top 10, signaling how deeply electrification is taking root on American soil—even as OEMs recalibrate their long-term EV strategies. The top 10 Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X, Jeep Gladiator, Kia EV6, Honda Ridgeline, Honda Odyssey, Honda Passport, VW ID.4.The index ranks vehicles based on five key factors: percentage of U.S. and Canadian parts, final assembly location, country of origin for engines and transmissions, and the size of the automaker's U.S. manufacturing workforceLead researcher Patrick Masterson said, “Buying American-made often means looking beyond traditional nameplates. You don't always know what's built in your backyard unless someone connects the dots.”Tesla is halting its Cybertruck and Model Y production lines at the Austin Gigafactory during the July 4 week, timing the pause with its much-anticipated robotaxi debut in the same city. The one-week shutdown, starting June 30, will allow for line maintenance and voluntary worker training. This marks at least the third production pause in a year for Austin, following previous stoppages in May and December.Tesla says the pause will help ramp up output, though it hasn't specified which lines will see gains. In parallel, Tesla is preparing to launch its first robotaxi rides using Model Ys, with Elon Musk saying “We are being super paranoid about safety, so the [June 22 launch] date could shift,”Musk added that by June 28, the vehicles would be capable of driving themselves from the factory directly to a customer's home. The U.S. Senate has approved a bill creating the first federal regulatory framework for stablecoins, cryptocurrencies designed to maintain a fixed value—typically 1:1 to the U.S. dollar. This marks a significant step forward for digital asset adoption and oversight. The GENIUS Act passed with bipartisan support, 68–30, and now moves to the House for final approval before it can be signed into law.The bill would require stablecoins to be fully backed by liquid assets like U.S. dollars and short-term Treasuries, with monthly public reserve disclosures.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

The #TeslaTakedown movement has gained traction, with over 65 events scheduled through March.Protesters in New York's Meatpacking District hurled insults at passing Teslas, calling them “uncool” and “major loser” cars. The movement took off on Bluesky, a social media competitor to Musk's X, and has since gone viral.Demonstrations started in Maine, Massachusetts, New York, California, and Colorado, but have now spread internationally. The protests lack a central leader but have been amplified by legislative advocacy groups like Indivisible and Rise and Resist.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email
