In this episode of The Autism Dad Podcast, host Rob Gorski speaks with Sarah Pearson, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) at Circle Care Services, to shed light on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy in 2024. For many parents of autistic children, ABA therapy is a crucial consideration, yet it can be shrouded in controversy and misinformation. Sarah demystifies ABA, explaining how it has evolved and how today's approach is centered on individualized, ethical support tailored to each child's needs. Topics Covered: - Sarah's Background: Sarah shares her journey from special education teaching to becoming a BCBA, driven by a passion to help kids on the autism spectrum reach their full potential. - Addressing ABA Controversies: Sarah discusses common misconceptions, including the outdated view that ABA is solely compliance-based. Instead, ABA in 2024 focuses on empowering children to gain independence through scientifically-backed, personalized methods. - Inside ABA Therapy: Sarah explains what ABA sessions look like today, from morning routines to skill-building exercises designed to increase independence and reduce parental stress. Parent involvement is highlighted as a key factor in maximizing ABA's effectiveness. - Behavior Management: Aggressive behaviors are addressed thoughtfully, with Sarah explaining how ABA now emphasizes understanding the root cause rather than simply suppressing symptoms. - ABA Therapy as a Transitional Tool: Sarah clarifies that ABA is not necessarily a lifelong intervention. The goal is to provide children with the skills to navigate life independently, ultimately phasing out services when appropriate. - Choosing the Right BCBA: Rob and Sarah stress the importance of finding a BCBA who aligns with a family's values and is receptive to feedback. They emphasize open communication, advocacy, and finding the right fit for each unique situation. Why This Episode Matters: For parents exploring therapy options, this episode offers a balanced perspective on modern ABA, encouraging informed decision-making. Sarah provides guidance on how to spot red flags, what to expect in sessions, and the importance of a collaborative, supportive therapeutic environment. A Separation (2011) is an Iranian drama written and directed by Asghar Farhadi. The film depicts the martial separation between a middle-class couple, Nadar (Peyman Moaadi) and his wife Simin (Leila Hatami). Simin wants the family to leave Iran to make a better life for their 10-year-old daughter Termeh, but Nadar does not want to leave his father who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease. So Nadar refuses to go and also refuses to give permission for their daughter to leave. The film also depicts the conflict that results when Nadar allegedly pushes his father's new, lower-income caregiver, Razieh (Sareh Bayat) down the stairs during an altercation, causing her to miscarry. A Separation centers around the two legal cases: the divorce proceedings between Nadar and Simin; and the criminal proceedings against Nadar. It provides a window not only into law in Iran but also into the complex forces of politics, class, and religion that shape modern Iranian society. To discuss this universally acclaimed and award-winning film, I'm joined by Golbarg Rekabtalaei, a professor of history at Seton Hall University and expert on Iran and Iranian cinema.Timestamps:0:00    Introduction2:21      An introduction to Iranian cinema7:21      The cosmopolitanism of Iranian cinema 10:45   Navigating government restrictions on cinema in Iran14:17    The legal context for A Separation16:18    Divorce law in Iran20:09  The film's opening scene24:02   Abortion and criminal law in A Separation31:13    Diyat (or “blood money” payments in Iran)35:44   Criminal investigations and procedure in Iran 39:30   Imprisonment of debtors41:44   A social drama that uses the court to broader themes46:25   The Green Movement and the political context for the film48:46   Other recommended films about Iranian law and societyFurther reading:Becker, Ben, “‘A Separation': Exploring Class, Marriage, and Morality through Iranian Culture,” Cinemablography Burke, Jospeh, “Rediscovering Morality through Asghar Farhadi's ‘A Separation,'” Senses of Cinema (Dec. 2011)Haqshenas, Saleh, Badiei, Sediqeh & Narmani, Hamid, “Iran's Perspective: A Deconstructive Analysis of "A Separation Movie" Through Application of Binary Opposition,” International Researchers vol 2, no. 1 (Mar. 2013)Kirshner, Jonathan, “Secrets, Lies, and Censorship: The Revelation of Asghar Farhadi's Films,” Boston Review (Aug. 14, 2024)Rekabtalaei, Golbarg, Iranian Cosmopolitanism: A Cinematic History (2019)Romig, Rollo, “Blood Money: Crime and Punishment in ‘A Separation,'” New Yorker (Feb. 24, 2012) Law on Film is created and produced by Jonathan Hafetz. Send us a textIn today's world so many men are working through the ideas of masculinity, toxic masculinity, and calling. So what does healthy masculinity look like? What does a man's calling look like? How does a man discover his calling? My guests today, Rory and Matt, have great insight into these issues and lots more in a fun and important conversation. Rory Lawrence is the founder of The Dangerous Man Podcast. Husband to Jenni, father to three children, brother to seven siblings, and a Pastor to Legacy Church. He holds a deep desire to help all men discover their true masculine and dangerous selves. Rory has conquered hell on earth many times, overcoming some of life's most difficult battles and he continues to turn that pain into purpose. Masculinity is a pursuit he believes brings revelation to a mans heart of who he is, from the God who designed it. When real biblical masculinity is embraced it deepens a mans understanding and ability to live out the unique calling on his life as a dangerous man. Matt Fortin is co-founder of The Dangerous Man Podcast. He is a loving husband to his wife Becca and he became motivated to inspire men to be the best version of themselves after being surrounded by great examples of men all throughout his life. Matt has always been drawn to mental toughness, discipline and drive, and those values pushed him to carry out his Division 1 baseball dream at Seton Hall University. Matt is a firm believer that all he has learned in athletics has helped him define his conception of manhood. You can find their podcast and connect with them at https://dangerousmanpodcast.com/ You can find Significant Man Ministries at https://SignificantMan.comQuestions asked:What do you mean when you state, “Your masculinity isn't toxic, it's missing”?How does a guy find his masculinity? What was something you discovered through great books written to men? What are some lies of the enemy that you've had to face? Why do men suffer with domestic abuse in silence? How does a man discover their calling? Why is the greatest calling for a man to lead his family? How does culture attack marriage? What are some questions men should ask themselves as they are discovering their calling? How does a man deal with knowing his calling, but his wife is not on board? What is the importance of a husband and wife being on the same team? What is the distinction between what is from the world and what is from God?What are your thoughts on a man who goes with the flow instead of following his calling? What does the Bible say about passive men? What duty does a man have to fulfill his calling? What does it mean to be dangerous for good?

The largest East-West prisoner swap since the Cold War occurred on Thursday when Russia freed wrongly convicted Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich along with more than a dozen people jailed by the Kremlin.
