Despite reporting a quarterly profit decline on 24 April due to higher European sales incentives, Kia says its solid profit base can sustain the strategy, with the upcoming EV2 small SUV set to challenge the BYD Dolphin Surf directly.BYD DENZA Z TAKES AIM AT TESLABYD unveiled the production Denza Z at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show — an all-electric supercar with around 1,000 hp, a sub-two-second 0–60 mph claim, and three variants including a coupe and convertible. Estimated at around $65,000 in China, it targets the Tesla Roadster 2 and is prioritised for European sales, with a Goodwood Festival of Speed debut planned and full technical details due in July 2026.OIL SHOCK COULD SPEED UK EV UPTAKERising oil prices following US and Israeli strikes on Iran and closure of the Strait of Hormuz are shifting the economic case toward EVs, accelerating a consumer tipping point already supported by better batteries. A large EV fleet could transform UK grid stability through vehicle-to-grid systems, with Ofgem estimating that half of projected EVs on V2G by 2030 could provide 16GW of flexible capacity — five times the projected output of Hinkley Point C.PHEVS COST MORE TO BUY AND RUNECIU data shows eight of the UK's 10 best-selling PHEVs carry a higher sticker price than comparable EVs, with an average gap of £4,150 or 10%, even as the average new EV has fallen below the average new petrol car for the first time. Real-world PHEV fuel costs run 490% above official figures, pushing annual fuelling costs to around £1,030 — £620 more per year than an equivalent EV — making total cost of ownership over £1,000 per year higher than going fully electric.OMODA & JAECOO HITS ONE MILLION SALESOmoda & Jaecoo reached one million cumulative global sales in April 2026, just three years after its international debut, recording monthly sales of over 60,000 units in March and operating across 69 markets with 1,364 dealers. Europe drove 41.5% of total global sales, with a 246% year-on-year rise in March, and the brand ranked sixth in the UK with a 4.7% market share — with Omoda & Jaecoo now targeting one million annual sales by 2027.GWM PULLS ORA 03 FROM UKGWM has withdrawn the Ora 03 electric hatchback from the UK market after only 542 units were registered across all of 2025 and just 26 in Q1 2026, ending a four-year run for the model originally launched as the Funky Cat. No new stock will be supplied, with the car available only from existing dealer inventory as GWM shifts focus to a broader European growth strategy.LEAPMOTOR B05 TARGETS EUROPE WITH LOW PRICESLeapmotor's B05 compact hatchback will launch in Europe starting at €26,900 in Italy, undercutting every major rival by at least €10,000, including the Volkswagen ID.3 at €40,990, the BYD Dolphin at €35,000 and the MG4 at €34,000. At 4,430 mm long with rear-wheel drive, 160 kW, a 0–100 km/h time of 6.7 seconds and DC fast charging peaking at 174 kW, it combines size, performance and price in a package that directly targets the mainstream European EV market.US EV MAKERS PRESS DIRECT SALES FIGHTUS EV makers including Tesla, Rivian and Lucid are escalating efforts to bypass the dealer franchise model, which still controls 96% of new-vehicle deliveries, using new legal strategies and ballot initiative threats — though the three brands combined held less than 4% of the US light-vehicle market in 2025. The bigger industry fear is not EV startups but legacy or foreign brands like Volkswagen's Scout Motors breaking the model open for all manufacturers, which could fundamentally reshape US auto retail.MG WEIGHS SPAIN FOR EUROPEAN EV PLANTMG Motor reportedly favours Spain — particularly Galicia — over Hungary for its first European EV manufacturing plant, driven largely by Galicia's strong shipping links to the UK, MG's most important European market. No final decision has been made, but the move is driven by SAIC facing the EU's highest Chinese automaker tariff rate of 35.3%, even as producing cars in Europe will cost more than manufacturing them in China.AVERAGE EV RETAINS 97% OF ITS RANGE AFTER THREE YEARSRecurrent's 2026 EV Market and Trends Report found that the average EV retains 97% of its range after three years and 95% after five years, with five brands — Cadillac, Ford, Hyundai, Mercedes and Rivian — showing zero apparent range loss over five years. Used EV demand surged 53.9% between February and March 2026, with the average used EV now priced at $34,653 — just $1,012 below an equivalent ICE vehicle — while average new EV range for 2026 models rose 11% to 325 miles.

BlueCruise can be bought outright or via subscription, with all capable Puma models receiving a free three-month trial.BYD TO EXPORT FLASH CHARGING BY 2026BYD plans to roll out its 1,500 kW Flash Charging network internationally before the end of 2026, starting with a push to 20,000 stations across China and then expanding to plants in Thailand, Brazil, and Hungary. The system charges second-gen LFP Blade Battery vehicles from 10% to 70% in five minutes, with each unit also functioning as an on-site 200–300 kWh battery pack to protect local grid infrastructure.POLL FINDS EV KNOWLEDGE GAPA YouGov poll for the ECIU found that over half of non-EV drivers scored two or fewer correct answers out of ten on basic EV facts, with nearly half wrongly believing EVs catch fire more often than petrol cars. A House of Lords committee described the situation as a "concerted campaign of misinformation," warning that false narratives and deliberate anti-EV propaganda by some in the media are a major barrier to EV uptake in the UK.MOST UK BUYERS MISS EV GRANTCarwow research found that 64% of in-market UK car buyers were unaware of the Government's EV grant, despite 73% of those who did know about it saying a full £3,750 discount would make them more likely to choose an EV. EVs now account for just under a quarter of new car sales, with only 8 of the 46 qualifying models eligible for the maximum grant amount.MERCEDES SETS OUT 2026 GLA PLANMercedes will launch the third-generation GLA later in 2026 on its MMA platform, offering hybrid and fully electric variants with an 800V system, a new vehicle supercomputer, and over-the-air update capability. The flagship GLA 250+ pairs an 85 kWh battery with a 262 bhp rear motor targeting up to 420 miles WLTP range, and the cabin features a 14.5-inch touchscreen with AI-powered MBUX voice recognition.MG 4 EV URBAN SET FOR AUSTRALIA IN 2026MG will bring the MG 4 EV Urban to Australia from April 2026, featuring LFP batteries in 43 kWh and 54 kWh options and a front-wheel-drive-only layout on the newer E3 platform. Pricing has not been confirmed, but UK figures suggest it could land closer to A$30,000, putting it in direct competition with BYD's Dolphin Essential at $29,990.OCTOPUS EXPORTS PLUNGE PRICING EV CHARGING TO FRANCEOctopus Energy is extending its dynamic Plunge Pricing public charging model to France via Electroverse, offering up to 50% discounts on charging costs when wholesale power prices fall due to high wind and solar output. The launch covers around 7,000 ultra-rapid Powerdot charge points, with Electroverse already connected via roaming to roughly 97% of France's 172,000 public charging points.PORSCHE CONSIDERING TAYCAN PANAMERA MERGERPorsche is exploring merging the Taycan and Panamera into a single model line offering petrol, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric variants, following €1.8 billion in write-downs tied to delayed SSP Sport platform development. The merged line could follow the Macan and Cayenne model, where parallel ICE and EV versions share a name despite using distinct platforms.SK BATTERY AMERICA CUTS 958 GEORGIA JOBSSK Battery America has cut 958 workers — 37% of its workforce — at its Commerce, Georgia plant, citing weak US EV market conditions. The plant had supplied cells for the Ford F-150 Lightning, Volkswagen ID.4, and Hyundai and Kia models, with Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff blaming the losses on the Trump administration's stance on EVs.VOLVO EX60 BETS BIG ON CENTRAL SOFTWAREVolvo has positioned the all-electric EX60, due for customer deliveries in September, as Europe's first "true" software-defined vehicle, combining in-house batteries, motors, core software, and the new SPA3 platform under one roof. The centralised software architecture replaces dozens of supplier ECUs and kilometres of wiring, with Volvo claiming the freed-up space gives the D-segment SUV cabin room comparable to older E-segment cars.REDWOOD SHIFTS EV BATTERIES INTO SECOND-LIFE STORAGERedwood Materials is expanding into second-life battery energy storage after finding that incoming used EV packs are retaining more capacity and arriving in better condition than originally modelled. The strategy centres on a 12 MW/63 MWh second-life BESS project in Texas — claimed as the world's largest — with Redwood targeting GWh-scale deployments for data centres, renewables, and utility-scale installations.
Today I want to talk about something that looks like it belongs in an auto industry newsletter, but it's actually a leading indicator for the broader economy, and it matters for real estate investors.Walk onto an auto dealer lot today and you'll see a lot more sheet metal sitting still than you're used to seeing. The lots look full, and in many cases, they are. But the more important metric is not “how many cars you see,” it's how long they're sitting there.Cox Automotive reported that in January 2026 the U.S. market began February with inventory around 2.77 million units, and the key line was this, days' supply jumped to 98, driven by a notably slower sales pace. When days' supply rises, the story is simple, the vehicle is not moving, the consumer is hesitating. And that jump happened fast. Cox noted days' supply around 76 in the prior period, then up to 98 as sales slowed. CarEdge tracks market day supply by vehicle, essentially how long it would take to sell existing listings at the current sales pace. In late winter 2026, some models are showing truly abnormal numbers, deep into the multiple hundreds of days. The attached notes you provided list examples like the Dodge Charger around 406 days, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer around 463 days, and the Volkswagen ID.4 around 480 days of supply, which is beyond “slow,” that's a demand breakdown at the price point. Even some Korean cars are showing huge inventory. The Hyundai Sonata has 201 days of inventory on dealer lots. The Hyundai Santa Crus has 222 days on dealer lots. The Buick Envision which incidentally is made in China has 267 days of inventory on dealer lots. The are more than a dozen models with over 200 days of inventory on dealer lots. ------------**Real Estate Espresso Podcast:** Spotify: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/3GvtwRmTq4r3es8cbw8jW0?si=c75ea506a6694ef1) iTunes: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-real-estate-espresso-podcast/id1340482613) Website: [www.victorjm.com](http://www.victorjm.com) LinkedIn: [Victor Menasce](http://www.linkedin.com/in/vmenasce) YouTube: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](http://www.youtube.com/@victorjmenasce6734) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/realestateespresso](http://www.facebook.com/realestateespresso) Email: [podcast@victorjm.com](mailto:podcast@victorjm.com) **Y Street Capital:** Website: [www.ystreetcapital.com](http://www.ystreetcapital.com) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital](https://www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital) Instagram: [@ystreetcapital](http://www.instagram.com/ystreetcapital)

Nevo reports that the Irish car market has crossed a landmark moment. New figures released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show that 7,319 (Up 48.67% on 2025) electric vehicles were registered in January 2026, meaning electric cars officially outsold petrol cars (7,245) for the first time in a single month. It marks a significant acceleration in a trend that has been building steadily over the past number of years. While electrification was once viewed as a long-term ambition, the January data confirms it is now a present-day reality. This is not the first time electric vehicles have overtaken a traditional fuel type. Back in April 2023, EVs outsold diesel cars for the first time on a monthly basis. That moment proved to be a tipping point. By 2025, electric vehicles accounted for 18.9% of all new car sales, while diesel fell to 17.1%, meaning EVs surpassed diesel for the full year as a whole. What makes the January 2026 figures particularly striking is the scale and speed of growth. Ireland registered more electric vehicles in the first 28 days of January (6,0?? units) than in the entire 12 months of 2020, when just 4,013 EVs were sold nationwide. In effect, more than a year's worth of progress has been compressed into just four weeks! This surge has been driven by several converging factors. Public charging infrastructure continues to expand, consumer understanding of electric ownership has improved, and real-world experience has helped dispel many early misconceptions around range and usability. Perhaps most importantly, the long-discussed issue of price is rapidly fading. The arrival of electric family cars priced between €20,000 and €30,000 has effectively burst the so-called pricing myth that EV's are more expensive. In many segments, electric and combustion vehicles now sit at or near price parity. With the reduction in tech and battery prices, many brands now offer entry into EV ownership at sub €20k with real-world range and comfort. For buyers, the decision increasingly comes down not to cost, but to individual needs, driving patterns and lifestyle. Competition has also intensified dramatically. The entrance and rapid growth of Chinese manufacturers such as MG, BYD, XPeng, and, most recently, Leapmotor, have reshaped the market, putting pressure on established brands to be competitive and accelerate innovation. January sales figures by manufacturer place Hyundai firmly in the lead, with Volkswagen and Kia close behind, while BYD and Renault complete the top five best-selling electric brands. Looking at the five best-selling electric vehicles puts the Volkswagen ID.4 on top, followed by the Hyundai Inster, Kia EV3, Hyundai Kona Electric, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The year ahead will see the arrival of many more exciting new electric vehicles. This means together, the data points to a clear conclusion that Ireland is no longer approaching an electric future; it is firmly entering one! "Seeing the total numbers of EVs sold for January is hugely encouraging. At Nevo, we all hope our RDS-based Electric Vehicle Show and our nationwide Driving Experience events have played a small part in these numbers by giving people real, hands-on exposure. Once drivers experience EVs properly, the numbers tend to speak for themselves," said Simon Andreucetti, Managing Director at Nevo "This is genuinely excellent news. It shows Irish motorists are confident, informed, and ready for change! EVs outselling combustion power in a single month isn't symbolic anymore, it's fact. Choice, pricing parity and real-world experience have finally aligned, and the market is moving decisively forward. Our Nevo YouTube channel growth reflects this trend with more people consuming and engaging with our content monthly," added Derek Reilly, Content & PR Director at Nevo.

In Episode 235, Tu and Lei break down a pivotal week for autonomous driving, global EV competition, and the future of premium automakers—from Silicon Valley to China and Europe. The conversation opens with a surge of AV and robotaxi news: Tesla removing safety drivers in Austin, shifting FSD to a subscription model, and signaling potential approval in China and Europe; Waymo expanding into Miami; DiDi launching a new robotaxi platform in China; and large-scale robo-van ambitions from Mobileye–Volkswagen and Geely's Caocao Mobility. Together, these moves signal that autonomy is no longer experimental—it's scaling.Tu frames autonomy through four lenses: technology readiness, silicon and cloud stacks, regulatory approval, and societal impact, including job displacement and cost reduction through scale. While Tesla remains the benchmark, Chinese players like XPeng, Huawei, and Baidu are rapidly closing the gap—supported by a more permissive regulatory environment in China. The episode then pivots to a blunt assessment of the premium auto sector. Porsche's collapse to ~42,000 units in China, deep price cuts from BMW and Mercedes, and the stark comparison between Porsche's Macan EV and Xiaomi's YU7 highlight how “premium” is being redefined by software, features, and price—not heritage.Tu and Lei argue that the high-margin glory days for German luxury brands are over, not just in China but globally, as Chinese OEMs demonstrate faster iteration, lower costs, and mass-market appeal—especially to younger and female buyers. The discussion closes with battery swapping (BAAS), cold-weather EV realities, and whether Chinese automakers could realistically build trust and scale in North America.Strategic, candid, and forward-looking, this episode explains why autonomy and affordability—not badges—will define the next era of the auto industry.___
This week we're putting a modern twist on everybody's favorite game: The One Year Garage is visiting the fresh, dewy, barely sentient year of 2026 to see what of its offerings might strike the fancy of the diehard old-car obsessives on our panel. Spoiler alert: there are strongly held opinions, some of which are not the same as yours. Along the way, they also cover Tekashi 6ix9ine; hypercar ignorance; the cost of modern car ownership; when 2014 still means "new"; auto show nostalgia; Fiero dreams; DRS on a "street car"; (good) weird small cars; non-metallic snarkiness; exotic e-bikes; Dakar semis; a far-off Scout fantasy; gigantic vehicles with gobs of power; going solo in a Sterrato; Morgan snarkiness; and a general unease with the new car industry. For those unfamiliar, the rules of One Year Garage are simple: each of our contestants, round-robin-style, pick a vehicle for every one of five categories: Sports Car, Daily Driver, Family Hauler, Truck/4x4, and Wild Card. All picks must be (or will theoretically be) available during the 2026 model year. Once a particular car has been picked, it can't be picked again. Self-doubt is encouraged, and judgment must be passed on others' choices. Arguments about what belongs in a certain category are expected. And the group must accidentally leave out at least one important option, the absence of which must raise the ire of a minimum of two people on Instagram. Enjoy!

XX Cornell researchers have developed an implant system that can treat type 1 diabetes by supplying extra oxygen to densely packed insulin-secreting cells, without the need for immunosuppression. The system could also potentially provide long-term treatment for a range of chronic diseases. This lab has produced previous implantable devices that have proved effective in controlling blood sugar in diabetic mice, but they can only last so long. "It's the proof of concept. We really proved that oxygenation is important, and oxygenation will support high cell-density capsules," Tempelman said. "The capsules are immune protective and last for a long time without having some kind of fouling of the membrane. The body never likes it when you put a foreign substance in. So that's the engineering in the Ma Lab, to look for materials and coatings for the materials that are immune protective, but also don't invoke excess response from the body because of the material." The next step will be to implant the system in a pig model, and also test it with human stem cells. The researchers are interested in eventually trying to use the system for implanting different cell types in humans for long-term treatment of chronic diseases, according to Tempelman, who is CEO of Persista Bio Inc., a new startup she founded with Ma and Flanders that is licensing these technologies. https://medicalxpress.com/news/2025-08-implant-diabetes-oxygenating-insulin-cells.html XX Mayo Clinic cancer research may be big news for T1D. After identifying a sugar molecule that cancer cells use on their surfaces to hide from the immune system, the researchers have found the same molecule may eventually help in the treatment of type 1. Cancer cells use a variety of methods to evade immune response, including coating themselves in a sugar molecule known as sialic acid. The researchers found in a preclinical model of type 1 diabetes that it's possible to dress up beta cells with the same sugar molecule, enabling the immune system to tolerate the cells. The findings show that it's possible to engineer beta cells that do not prompt an immune response In the preclinical models, the team found that the engineered cells were 90% effective in preventing the development of type 1 diabetes. The beta cells that are typically destroyed by the immune system in type 1 diabetes were preserved. https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/mayo-clinic-researchers-find-sugar-coating-cells-can-protect-those-typically-destroyed-in-type-1-diabetes/ XX A daily pill may be as effective in lowering blood sugar and aiding weight loss in people with Type 2 diabetes as the popular injectable drugs Mounjaro and Ozempic, according to results of a clinical trial announced by Eli Lilly on Thursday morning. The drug, orforglipron, is a GLP-1, a class of drugs that have become blockbusters because of their weight-loss effects. But the GLP-1s on the market now are expensive, must be kept refrigerated and must be injected. A pill that produces similar results has the potential to become far more widely used, though it is also expected to be expensive. Lilly said it would seek approval from the Food and Drug Administration later this year to market orforglipron for obesity and early in 2026 for diabetes. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/17/health/pill-glp-1-eli-lilly.html XX Use of diabetes technology has dramatically increased and glycemic control has improved among people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in the US over the past 15 years, but at the same time, overall achievement of an A1c level < 7% remains low and socioeconomic and racial disparities have widened. These findings came from an analysis of national electronic health records of nearly 200,000 children and adults with T1D by Michael Fang, PhD, of the Department of Epidemiology, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, and colleagues. The study was published online on August 11, 2025, in JAMA Network Open. Use of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) increased substantially from 2009-2011 to 2021-2023, from less than 5% in both children and adults to more than 80% and over half, respectively. While A1c levels did drop over the 15 years, just 1 in 5 children and slightly over a quarter of adults achieved a level < 7%. The average A1c level stayed above 8%, with ethnic minorities and low-income patients seeing the smallest gains. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/diabetes-tech-use-rise-a1c-reductions-still-lag-2025a1000lc9 XX Inflammation may predict how well people with diabetes respond to depression treatment, and the effects differ dramatically between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Diabetes and depression often appear together. Indeed, depression is more than three times more prevalent in people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and nearly twice as prevalent in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). When they appear together, treatment for depression can vary widely. In a new study, researchers from the German Diabetes Center (DDZ), the Research Institute of the Diabetes Academy Mergentheim (FIDAM), and the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) investigated how inflammation in the body relates to improvement in depression symptoms in people with T1D and T2D. The researchers combined data from three previous German randomized clinical trials that aimed to reduce elevated depressive symptoms and diabetes distress in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Diabetes distress is characterized by feelings of overwhelm, frustration, guilt and worry about diabetes management and its potential complications. A total of 332 participants with T1D and 189 with T2D who had completed both a baseline and 12-month follow-up examination were included in the present study. Measures included depression using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale (CES-D), blood tests for 76 inflammatory biomarkers, and symptoms broken down into cognitive-affective (e.g., feeling hopeless), somatic (e.g., poor sleep, fatigue), and anhedonia (loss of pleasure) clusters. After adjusting for factors like age, body mass index (BMI), diabetes duration, cholesterol, and co-existing illnesses, the researchers found that in patients with T1D, higher baseline inflammation was linked to smaller improvements in depression. Inflammation seemed to be more connected to physical/somatic symptoms in T1D patients. In those with T2D, higher baseline inflammation was linked to greater improvements in depression. For these patients, the effect was strongest for cognitive-affective and anhedonia – so, emotional and motivational – symptoms. The researchers weren't sure what caused the difference between T1D and T2D, but they suggest it might be due to the different forms of immune activation seen in each condition. That is, autoimmune processes in type 1 and metabolic inflammation in type 2. https://newatlas.com/health-wellbeing/inflammation-diabetes-depression-treatment/ XX Parents of children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes suffer an income drop in the years following the diagnosis. The impact is more pronounced in mothers, especially mothers of children diagnosed in preschool years. And these findings come from a European study.. not the US. Previous research has shown that parents of children with type 1 diabetes are at increased risk of stress-related symptoms and may need to reduce their working hours. "In our study, we observed reduced parental work-related incomes in the years following the child's type 1 diabetes diagnosis. The drop was larger in mothers than in fathers. Since mothers earned significantly less than fathers in absolute terms, even before the child fell ill, the relative drop in mothers was 6.6% the year following diagnosis compared to 1.5% in fathers. We further note the greatest impact on work-related incomes in mothers of children diagnosed at preschool age," says Beatrice Kennedy, physician at the Endocrine and Diabetes unit at Uppsala University Hospital and Associate Professor of Medical Epidemiology at Uppsala University, who led the study. This is a huge study, builds on data from national population and health registers and the Swedish Child Diabetes Register (Swediabkids). The study includes the parents of more than 13,000 children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in Sweden in 1993−2014, as well as more than half a million parents in the general population who have children not diagnosed with diabetes. The researchers observed that the maternal pension-qualifying incomes (a composite outcome including work-related income and societal benefits) initially increased after the child's diagnosis. This was attributable to mothers applying for the parental care allowance from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency. The parental care allowance was intended to compensate for disease-related loss of work-related income and contribute toward disease-specific costs. When the research team investigated long-term effects in mothers, they found that the pension-qualifying incomes gradually decreased after eight years, and had not recovered by the end of follow-up − 17 years after the children were diagnosed. https://www.news-medical.net/news/20250811/Mothers-face-greater-financial-impact-following-childe28099s-type-1-diabetes-diagnosis.aspx XX The U.S. Department of Justice has reached a settlement with Metro Nashville Public Schools after allegations that the district violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. The parents of a student at the Ross Early Learning Center requested that the school monitor their child's glucose monitor. Investigators found the school refused to do so, despite the child's Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis. As part of the settlement, MNPS agreed to change its policies to allow the use of these devices, ensure trained staff can monitor them throughout the entire school day and at school activities, and improve communication with parents. https://www.wsmv.com/2025/08/12/metro-nashville-public-schools-settles-allegations-it-discriminated-against-students-with-diabetes/ XX Modular Medical has unveiled Pivot, its next-generation insulin patch pump technology aimed at simplifying diabetes care. The company announced its new pump for “almost-pumpers” at the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists (“ADCES”) Conference in Phoenix, Arizona this weekend. It aims for Pivot to target adults with a user-friendly, affordable design. Modular Medical's current pump, the MODD1, won FDA clearance nearly a year ago. It features new microfluidics technology to allow for the low-cost pumping of insulin. The system has a reservoir size of 300 units/3mL. Users can monitor the pump activity with their cell phone and do not require an external controller. The pump uses a provided, single-use, disposable battery. The company announced recently that it validated its insulin pump cartridge line for human-use production in the U.S. Days later, it reported the first human use of the MODD1 pump. Now, it has taken the next steps with the debut of a next-gen pump, set for FDA submission in October. Modular Medical also gamifies diabetes care The company also said ADCES is the place where it will showcase the first playable level of its new Pivot pump gamified trainin module. Level Ex, a developer of medical games, develops the module. Modular Medical said gamification offers a way to make medical training more effective and efficient while improving information retention. Given the complexity in pump uptake, the company hopes to provide an easy way to bring its technology to clinicians and patients. The company expects to have training modules available at the same time as the pump's planned launch in 2026. “Level One is free because diabetes mastery shouldn't come with a price tag,” Sam Glassenberg, CEO of Level Ex, said. “Modular Medical is breaking barriers too – bringing pump therapy to more people through smart, accessible design. Together, we intend to make diabetes management simpler and more inclusive. “People learn best through play – and we believe they want to learn about insulin pumps the same way. In Level One, players aren't just mastering diabetes management through gameplay – they're asking to ‘play' with pumps: to explore how they work, understand their benefits, and build confidence before using them in real life. Our partnership with Modular Medical helps make that possible.” https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/modular-medical-unveils-next-gen-insulin-pump/ XX On Tuesday, 12 August 2025, Tandem Diabetes Care (NASDAQ:TNDM) presented at the Canaccord Genuity's 45th Annual Growth Conference, outlining strategic shifts and market focus. The company highlighted its plans for commercial transformation in the U.S. and expansion in international markets, alongside addressing competitive challenges and regulatory impacts. While optimistic about growth in Outside the U.S. (OUS) markets, Tandem is navigating a more competitive landscape domestically. We have entered into the pharmacy channel with Mobi only. And so as Mobi's been building up volume, we're getting experience and we're really learning and understanding what pharmacy offers to us. And the proof points have proved out the thesis I said earlier, which is it can really reduce that barrier for patients, is the out of pocket cost. And so we've decided to accelerate our strategy and where we were starting just with Mobi, we are now moving t slim supplies into the pharmacy channel, and that will kick into gear in the fourth quarter. So as people are looking at the cadence of sales for the remainder of the year with this reframing, many folks are seeing what looks like a a might be an outsized fourth quarter and and having trouble understanding those dynamics. We'll be adding the tSIM supplies to those contracts. We also have more coverage. We will have it in the coming weeks effective this year, so we will be increasing that 30% rate before the end of the year. And then, obviously, everyone's in the same cycle right now already negotiating and discussing their 2026 coverage. And so 30% is the floor. We do expect to continue to grow that coverage in the coming years, and ultimately have a much broader access. Absolutely. It's an exciting technology that allows for us to have an infusion set that extends the wear time from three days to up to seven days. So we're able to use that as part of an independent infusion set, which would then be used with the t slim and with the mobi pump today. But we're also using that same technology as part of the site that's used for mobi when you use it with a tubeless cartridge. So next year, we will launch Mobi in a patch configuration. It uses the same pump that's available today, but by using a modified cartridge, you're able to wear it as a patch pump. So one of the things we announced on the call is that we're using this extended wear technology as part of that site. So what it allows you to do is to change the portion that you wear in your skin separate from the timing of when you change the insulin cartridge. So it allows for that extended wear time, reduction of burden to the patient, which is especially important for higher volume insulin users as we expand into type two. So from here, we will launch the extended wear site next year along with we'll do a separate regulatory filing for the cartridge portion for Mobi that includes this extended wear technology as a predicate device. So that's another filing that we'll need to do, but we have the clearance today for the independent infusion set, but we'll file another five ten k for use of the extended wear technology as part of the tubeless Mobi feature. https://za.investing.com/news/transcripts/tandem-diabetes-at-canaccord-conference-strategic-shifts-and-market-focus-93CH-3834464 XX MannKind today announced a significant regulatory submission and a large financing agreement with Blackstone. The company submitted its lead inhaled insulin product for expanded FDA approval and secured $500 million in funding, it said. First, the Danbury, Connecticut-based company announced that it submitted a supplemental Biologics License Application (sBLA) for Afrezza, its inhaled insulin product, in the pediatric population. MannKind Director of Medical and Scientific Engagement Joanne Rinker, MS, RDN, BC-ADM, CDCES, LDN, FADCES, told Drug Delivery Business News at ADA 2025 that a submission was on the way for children and adolescents aged 4-17 years old. Further data shared at ADA found Afrezza both safe and effective in that age range. Afrezza is a fast-acting insulin formulation delivered through an inhaler device. MannKind engineered the mechanical inhaler device to slowly bring powder into the lung. A small compartment opens for the insertion of the insulin cartridge, then the user closes it. The only other component is a mouthpiece for the sake of cleanliness. Then, the inhalation takes just two seconds. It requires no electronics or extra components. The company expects a review acceptance decision early in the fourth quarter of 2025. “The submission of our supplemental Biologics License Application (sBLA) for Afrezza in pediatric patients is a meaningful milestone for MannKind and people living with diabetes,” said Michael Castagna, CEO of MannKind Corporation. Additional funding provides a significant boost for MannKind MannKind also announced a strategic financing agreement with funds managed by Blackstone worth up to $500 million. The financing provides MannKind with non-dilutive capital to advance its short- and long-term growth strategies. This senior secured credit facility includes a $75 million initial term loan funded at closing. It then has a $125 million delayed draw term loan available for the next 24 months. Finally, it features an additional $300 million uncommitted delayed draw term loan available at the mutual consent of MannKind and Blackstone. The facility bears interest at a calculated SOFR variable rate plus 4.75% and matures in August 2030. “This strategic financing significantly increases our operating flexibility and provides us substantial access to non-dilutive capital on favorable terms, complementing our strong cash position,” said Castagna. “The funding will support the expansion of our commercial team in preparation for the anticipated launch of the pediatric indication for Afrezza, if approved, continued pipeline advancement, potential business development opportunities, and general corporate purposes. Partnering with the Blackstone team on this transaction positions us to accelerate our next phase of growth and innovation.” https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/mannkind-fda-submission-pediatrics-500m-blackstone/ XX Medtronic MiniMed Abbott Instinct Sensor [Image from Medtronic Diabetes on LinkedIn] The Medtronic Diabetes business today took to social media to share an early preview of a new integrated Abbott sensor for its insulin delivery systems. Medtronic Diabetes — soon to be MiniMed after its planned separation from the medtech giant – said in the post that the new sensor specifically designed for its own systems is called “Instinct.” “Get a sneak peek at what's coming next: the Instinct sensor,” the business unit's account wrote. “Made by Abbott, the Instinct sensor is designed exclusively for MiniMed systems. We'll share more details about the Instinct sensor when it's commercially available.” The sensor, built on the Abbott FreeStyle Libre platform, reflects “the power of the partnership,” Abbott EVP, Diabetes Care, Chris Scoggins, told Drug Delivery Business News earlier this year. Medtronic and Abbott — two of the largest diabetes tech companies in the world — announced a year ago that they entered into a global partnership pairing Abbott continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) with Medtronic insulin delivery systems. The partnership aims to collaborate on a system based on Abbott's FreeStyle Libre CGMs with Medtronic's automated insulin delivery technology (the latest generation being the MiniMed 780G) and smart insulin pen systems, such as the InPen system. Read more about Medtronic, Abbott and the rest of the diabetes tech industry in our free Diabetes Technology Special Report. Medtronic's systems previously used its own CGMs, such as the Guardian 4 and the Simplera platform, and the company intends to continue using those systems as part of a comprehensive CGM portfolio. Under the companies' agreement, the systems would be sold exclusively by Medtronic — including the Abbott CGM. The companies brought the partnership a step further in April when Medtronic announced the submission of an interoperable pump with the Abbott sensor technology to the FDA. They plan to share more details following the expected FDA clearance, which remains pending. Management also recently emphasized the multi-year nature of the partnership, meaning Medtronic could pair current and future pumps with other Abbott sensors in the future. That could hint at integration with the company's future dual glucose-ketone monitor, as a number of pump makers have already announced collaborations to pair their systems with the sensor once it hits the market. https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/medtronic-diabetes-previews-abbott-sensor-minimed/ XX Governor Glenn Youngkin joined Civica officials at the company's Petersburg manufacturing facility to announce a $3 million grant from the Commonwealth of Virginia to accelerate Civica's efforts to develop and produce affordable insulin for Americans living with diabetes. CivicaRx Logo "We are proud to partner with Civica in their mission to make essential medicines more accessible," said Governor Youngkin. "This investment reflects our belief in the power of public-private collaboration to improve lives and strengthen communities." These funds will support the production of insulin aspart, a rapid-acting human insulin analog used to regulate blood sugar in adults and children with diabetes. Civica plans to produce both rapid- and long-acting insulins at its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Petersburg, Va., where the company now employs more than 200 skilled workers.1 Over 8 million people living with diabetes need rapid-acting and/or long-acting insulin. The Governor also announced that he had officially proclaimed August 7 – 14 2025 'Life Sciences Week' demonstrating the Commonwealth's commitment to "accelerating the advancement of the life sciences through public-private partnerships, STEM education, workforce development, and sustained investment in research and development." "We are grateful for the Commonwealth's support," said Ned McCoy, Civica's President and CEO. "This funding will help us move closer toward our goal of ensuring that no one has to choose between insulin and other basic needs." Civica and Virginia officials were joined by Lynn Starr, Chief Global Advocacy Officer of Breakthrough T1D, the leading global type 1 diabetes research and advocacy organization. "More than one million American adults live with type 1 diabetes, and many still, sadly, ration their insulin, due to the prohibitively high cost of this necessary medication," said Starr. "Civica's work will help to make insulin more affordable for people across the country." Breakthrough T1D is among more than two dozen organizations and philanthropists, along with the states of Virginia and California, that have partnered with Civica to support the development of affordable insulins. Civica's insulin initiative aims to provide patients with predictable, transparent pricing — no more than $30 per vial or $55 for a box of five pens — regardless of insurance status. About Civica Civica is a nonprofit pharmaceutical company established to address drug shortages. It was founded by a group of U.S. health systems and philanthropies who, after more than a decade of chronic shortages, recognized that the market was not self-correcting and that a different approach is required. Civica works to deliver a safe, stable, and affordable supply of essential medicines to U.S. patients. Tom opened the show with an apology for two mistakes he's made in the past couple of weeks. Listen in for the corrections. Jill and Tom went on to share a tariff update, as well news regarding one of the strangest recalls…ever. So, what's wrong with the Volkswagen ID. Buzz's back seat? Listen in for details. Still in the first segment, Jill shares her take on the updated-for-2026 Genesis GV70 small crossover. Updated styling and a revised cabin are part of the news. In the second segment the hosts welcome Zack Pradel, host and founder of YouTube Channel Shooting Cars. Zack spends most of his time creating review videos of other peoples' cars. Discussed here are the Mercedes-Benz 380 SEC, Buick Park Avenue Ultra, and Chevrolet C-30 “high rail.” Zack has created more than 1800 videos; be sure to check them out. In the last segment Jill and Zack are subjected to Tom's “GT or No GT” Quiz. This one was close. The crew wrapped up the show talking about Buc-ee's Beaver Nuggets, a bag of which Jill brought to the studio.
Alex, Zac, and Beck get together to lick self-inflicted wounds; take a charmingly pessimistic view of what constitutes middle age; discuss how having a family influences one's driving style; compare the safety of a GT3 vs a handgun; talk about the changing tastes and time constraints associated with aging; equate driving in the Bay Area to driving on track; reveal the perception of a sports car in NYC versus California; wait for the vintage Fast & Furious style to come back around; and give a sad update on Leno's Law. The trio move on to an in-depth discussion about submissions and then address some great listener feedback from the last couple of episodes.Follow along! We're talking about how Group 1 grew in 2024 through $1.3B in acquisitions, a new face on the top 5 best-selling EVs and how grassroots is trying to take Tesla down.Show Notes with links:Group 1 Automotive made waves in 2024, dropping $1.3 billion to acquire 68 dealerships across the U.S. and U.K. The move adds $3.9 billion in annual revenue and solidifies the company's aggressive expansion strategy. The acquisitions spanned six major deals from Southern California to London.Major brands acquired include Lexus, Honda, Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, Porsche, Land Rover, and Audi.A key purchase was the $517 million acquisition of Inchcape's 54 U.K. stores, adding $2.7 billion in revenue. The company also sold off select U.S. dealerships, including a Buick-GMC store in Massachusetts and a Subaru dealership in New York.CEO Daryl Kenningham: “Our ability to acquire outstanding brands in desirable markets is because we perform well on the OEM eligibility metrics.”After a rocky 2024, the Volkswagen ID.4 is making a triumphant comeback. Following production halts due to a recall, sales of the electric SUV are now skyrocketing, making it the third best-selling EV in the U.S. last month.VW sold 4,979 ID.4s in January 2025, marking a 653% increase from the previous year. The ID.4 now ranks #3 in U.S. EV sales, trailing only the Tesla Model Y and Model 3.The top five best-selling EVs—Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3, VW ID.4, Tesla Cybertruck, and Honda Prologue—accounted for 54% of total EV sales.Over 102,200 EVs were sold in the U.S. in January, up 30% year-over-year.VW is offering aggressive discounts on 2024 models, with leases as low as $189/month.Tesla showrooms across the U.S. are becoming flashpoints for protests as demonstrators rally against Elon Musk's actions. The #TeslaTakedown movement has gained traction, with over 65 events scheduled through March.Protesters in New York's Meatpacking District hurled insults at passing Teslas, calling them “uncool” and “major loser” cars. The movement took off on Bluesky, a social media competitor to Musk's X, and has since gone viral.Demonstrations started in Maine, Massachusetts, New York, California, and Colorado, but have now spread internationally. The protests lack a central leader but have been amplified by legislative advocacy groups like Indivisible and Rise and Resist.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email
The VW Bus, in its many forms, has become one of the most recognizable vehicles in the company's history. Sure, it might be second to the VW Beetle, but even that might be a close race. While the bus has been out of production for decades for use in the U.S. market, the folks at VW showed off a battery-electric concept in 2016 dubbed BUDD-e. Of course, wiser heads prevailed, and the concept van was updated and given a new name in 2017: ID. Buzz. Of course, it would be a while before the ID. Buzz hit U.S. shores, but a successor to the VW Bus is finally showing up on U.S. streets. The '25 VW ID. Buzz rides on the brand's MEB platform and packs a 91-kWh battery pack under its floor. That battery feeds a 282 hp rear motor or a 335 hp dual-motor powertrain. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek's Mark Vaughn hops behind the wheel of the 2025 VW ID Buzz and puts it through its paces. Vaughn takes you on a guided tour of the ID. Buzz to highlight some of his favorite features. Later, Vaughn takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Vaughn chats with host Wesley Wren about the '25 ID. Buzz, minivans as a whole, and more. Closing the show, the pair breaks down what makes the 2025 VW ID. Buzz special.

Audi's e-tron lineup might have started with a lone crossover half a decade ago but has been spun into almost a sub-brand for the automaker. Joining the evolving line of Audi BEVs in 2021, the Audi Q4 e-tron joined the lineup to serve as the brand's electric entry point. Riding on the same MEB architecture that underpins its more cost-conscious Volkswagen counterpart, the Q4 e-tron packs a single electric drive module in the front, or an electric drive module at both axles. Unlike the Volkswagen ID.4, the Q4 e-tron only packs an 82 kWh battery pack. For '25, the team at Audi updated the powertrains for the Q4 e-tron, with more power heading to the renamed Q4 e-tron 45 and the Q4 e-tron 55. The all-wheel-drive, top-flight Q4 e-trong 55 now sends 335 hp to the pavement through its pair of electric drive motors. According to the EPA, this Audi is good for 258 miles per charge. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the '25 Audi Q4 e-tron 55 and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the Q4 e-tron to highlight some of his favorite features and relay what it's like in the real world. Later in the show, Wren takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Wren chats with Autoweek's Patrick Carone about the '25 Audi Q4 e-tron, battery-electric vehicles in Michigan, and more. Closing the show, the pair breaks down what makes the Q4 e-tron special.
