New Year. Same ole baseball talk. Ty argues that Erik Bedard could've won a Cy Young. Padres are *still* making moves. And the highlight of the episode: a 32 and older draft, where Tone and Ty assemble rosters of the game's best "old guys." --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/upperdeckerpod/support

No guest this week, but an action-packed episode nonetheless! Questions hit on players changing positions, how the current crop of pitching prospects compares to past groups, the Rookie Development Program, and more. And in this episode's Where Are They Now?, we covered the prospects in the Erik Bedard trade. (Note: We apologize for the errors contained in a previously uploaded version of this episode. Those issues should now be fixed.)
Ben and Sam discuss whether a team should have claimed Joe Mauer, what he’s worth, and what his future will look like, then talk about the end of Erik Bedard’s stay in Pittsburgh and how sad it is when a guy who’s always either good or injured goes bad.
David and I are in fine ranting form as we discuss the release of Erik Bedard, the promotion of Chase d'Arnaud and Major League Baseball's TV deal with ESPN. The Rays head to Fenway Park this season for what shouldn't be, but is the most important series of the year. After fans, media, and the team all took the postseason for granted, it's time to recognize that this is a real playoff race now. The sooner the Red Sox recognize that, the better. They still seem to be in "rest up" mode, when they should be in "play up" mode (lame way of stating things, but oh well)... This club is falling apart mentally and physically. Alex examines the latest lapses from this past series against the Blue Jays, including Daniel Bard's meltdown on Wednesday. How concerning are Bard's struggles never mind for the future, but for this year? Alex also has injury updates and speculation of Kevin Youkilis, Erik Bedard, Bobby Jenks, Josh Beckett, David Ortiz, and Adrian Gonzalez. Oh yeah, and Tim Wakefield finally won his 200th game. Eighth time's the charm. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about Mariano Rivera garnering his 600th career save, Joe Maddon as a manager of the year candidate, what baseball needs to do to gain back some national traction, and more. The Red Sox have won 2 of the last 3 games in Texas, are the Rangers still considered "unbeatable?" Are they a worse match-up for the Red Sox than the Yankees? Everything on the field from Carl Crawford failing to seize an opportunity last week to possibly heating up this week, to Adrian Gonzalez homering once again, to Ortiz/Ellsbury returning, to John Lackey vs. Erik Bedard (round 4) is touched upon. Oh yeah, and JD Drew is returning on 9/1. How convenient... Is it a possibility that Theo Epstein becomes GM of the Cubs? Alex discusses... In the "Around the League" segment Alex touches on the Yankees and the state of their roster as well as more gambling news involving Alex Rodriguez. There were also waiver claims made this week, from the Giants claiming Heath Bell to the Diamondbacks and Blue Jays swapping middle infields. The Red Sox have gone 8-8 in August and have scored 3 runs or less in 9 games. Is there a major offensive problem on team, or is this just temporary? Plus, how palpable was David Ortiz's absence from the lineup this past week? How palpable will Kevin Youkilis' potential absence be this weekend? The John Lackey vs. Erik Bedard "battle" for the 3rd slot in the rotation is touched upon, as is the AL MVP race. Ellsbury, Pedroia, or the recently slumping Gonzalez? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about the AL East standings where the Yankees have leapfrogged the Red Sox. Also, if baseball had to do the steroid era over again and thus make records still mean something, would it? Post on the message boards and participate in the show at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. The Red Sox took 2 of 3 from the Twins this week and Alex recaps all of the highlights from the series, including David Ortiz's terrific performance. Is Ortiz rightfully peeved that the Red Sox haven't approached him about a contract extension? How is that contrasted with Jonathan Papelbon, also a pending free agent, who hasn't expressed any frustration that the Red Sox also haven't talked to him about a new deal? The search for a reliable 3rd man in the bullpen, Erik Bedard's first two starts in a Red Sox uniform, and the astronomically high ratings from last Sunday's Red Sox/Yankee game are touched upon too. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex discusses the Indians once again emerging in the AL Central, the slumping Giants and red hot Brewers, Dan Uggla's 31 game hit streak, and more. The "post of the day" (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards) is handed out. Participation keeps the show running! "The Alex Reimer Show" is on indefinite hiatus...but we'll be back very soon. Stay tuned!
Jacoby Ellsbury's walk-off single on Tuesday and walk-off homer on Wednesday were just the icing on the cake to what has been a terrific season for him. It's worth saying again...Ellsbury is the one who's playing up to Carl Crawford's contract. The reliable performance of the bullpen in front of Jonathan Papelbon these past 2 nights, as well as Dustin Pedroia winning the player of the month award in July are discussed too. How does Erik Bedard slot into the rotation, and will the Boston media really be a major obstacle for him? How much did John Lackey's relative ineffectiveness factor into the necessity for the Bedard trade? Plus, how severe is Clay Buchholz's stress fracture? The "post of the day" is handed out (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards). Signing up to the boards is free, quick, and easy! In the "Around the League" segment, Alex analyzes the divisional races around the game and whether MLB would be overreaching if they suspended the currently injured Alex Rodriguez for his involvement in high-stakes poker games.
The non-waiver trade deadline has passed and Alex spends time discussing the big...Mike Aviles trade! (Okay, 2 minutes you're never going to get back were spent on Aviles.) But Also mostly turns his attention to Erik Bedard, and how Bedard solidifies the starting rotation with Clay Buchholz's future still very much in jeopardy. Besides health, are there any other concerns worth paying attention to in regards to Bedard? The 3 game series against the White Sox is recapped too, with Alex talking about Jarrod Saltalamacchia's continued impressive play, and Jon Lester's continued dominance on the mound since returning from the DL. Plus, it also seems as if the Red Sox are somewhat comfortable with their current bullpen... In the "Around the League" segment Alex gives his take on the Yankees standing pat at the deadline. He also runs over some winners and losers, ranging from teams who dreamed big like the Phillies and Indians to teams that should've sold big like the Cubs.
