This week I am honored to by joined by Heath Bell. From 2009 - 2011, Heath was the most dominant closer in baseball. With three straight seasons of 40 plus saves and 3 straight All-Star appearances, Heath's impact on the game of baseball was incredible - and to think it almost never happened.Today we sit down to discuss Heath's early life, particularly the trials and tribulations he went through in his 20's. Heath could have very easily given up. But his story is a key reminder as to why you should never give up on what you want to achieve the most.We sit down to discuss Heath's journey, his relationship with God, how coaches today are leading kids in the wrong direction and so much more. The Mets continue to sputter, but Pete Alonso hit his 23rd home run of the season yesterday, getting back within one of Shohei Ohtani for the major league lead, while the Polar Bear has a two-dinger edge at the moment on Matt Olson and Jorge Soler. So, today's home run chain is the man who is now halfway to the total of 46 homers that he needs this season to tie Howard Johnson for fourth on the Mets' all-time list with 192.* Pete Alonso hit his first home run off Drew Steckenrider, 4/1/19* Drew Steckenrider gave up his first home run to Wilmer Flores, 8/19/17* Wilmer Flores hit his first home run off Heath Bell, 8/11/13* Heath Bell gave up his first home run to Damion Easley, 8/30/04* Damion Easley hit his first home run off Rick Aguilera, 9/20/92* Rick Aguilera gave up his first home run to Andre Dawson, 6/16/85* Andre Dawson hit his first home run off Buzz Capra, 5/18/77* Buzz Capra gave up his first home run to Nate Colbert, 4/25/72* Nate Colbert hit his first home run of Jack Billingham, 4/24/69That was the first home run Jack Billingham allowed in his career, having tossed 71.1 innings as a Dodgers rookie the year before being picked by the Expos in the expansion draft. Just before the Expos started their maiden season, Billingham got shipped to Houston to complete the Rusty Staub trade, as Donn Clendenon had refused to report to the Astros. After playing that tangential role to the story of the 1969 Mets, Billingham featured in 1973 as the losing pitcher of the decisive Game 5 in the NLCS at Shea Stadium. He's best known, of course, for continuing with Cincinnati and winning two rings as part of the Big Red Machine, including two scoreless innings in Game 7 of the 1975 World Series.Colbert's chain-starting homer was a tiebreaking three-run shot at the Astrodome in the sixth win (and 16th game) in San Diego Padres history. Tony Gonzalez doubled after Billingham had gotten the first two batters he faced out, then the Astros intentionally walked Ollie Brown to bring up Colbert, who had gone 0-for-7 as a Rule 5 pick with the 1966 Astros, 8-for-53 for Houston in 1968, and then went to San Diego in the expansion draft.Colbert had gotten off to a 5-for-21 start with the Padres when he faced Billingham in what was his 86th major league plate appearance. The next day, the Padres returned home and Colbert homered off Jim Maloney. Then the next day, too, another go-ahead three-run shot in the eighth, this time off Jim Merritt. Colbert didn't homer in a doubleheader on April 27, but did take Claude Osteen of the Dodgers deep on the 28th, then went back east and blasted one off Phil Niekro in Atlanta.Colbert wound up with 24 homers in his breakout season, then hit 38, 27, 38, 22, and 14 as a three-time All-Star, establishing the Padres' franchise record at 163 home runs before he was traded to the Tigers in November 1974 for Ed Brinkman, Dick Sharon, and Bob Strampe. The Padres' current franchise leader in home runs? Still Nate Colbert at 163. The single-season mark of 38 stood until Ken Caminiti hit 40 homers in 1996, followed by Greg Vaughn hitting 50 two years later. The Padres have since had 40-homer seasons by Phil Nevin (41 in 2001), Adrián González (40 in 2009), and Fernando Tatis Jr. (42 in 2021).González got up to 161 before he left San Diego, where Nevin is third on the team's dinger list at 156, followed by Dave Winfield (154), Tony Gwynn (135), Wil Myers (134), Ryan Klesko (133), Caminiti (121), and Manny Machado (116).Those are the only nine players to hit 100 home runs for the Padres. Tatis is at 96, so he'll get there soon, and either he or Machado should eclipse Colbert's total over the next couple of seasons. Then again, who would've thought that Colbert would still be San Diego's home run king today? This is a public episode. Slide into our 3x All-Star, former Reliever of the Year and baseball dad, coach Heath Bell Heath Bell grew up in Southern California. He attended Tustin High School, it was there that he developed habits that would last a lifetime. Undrafted out of high school, Bell attended nearby Santa Ana College (known briefly as Rancho Santiago College during his time there. Bell went 8-0 with a 2.17 ERA and nine saves for the Dons as a freshman en route to being named the Orange Empire Conference Co-Pitcher of the Year in 1997.7 He added 12 saves as a sophomore. Although those two seasons would eventually lead to his 2010 induction into the Santa Ana College Hall of Fame, his junior-college success guaranteed nothing in terms of a professional career. Again defying his doubters, Bell was selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 69th round of the 1997 draft. The 1,583rd of 1,607 players taken that year, he did not sign, later recalling that when the Devil Rays made an offer, “I actually forgot I got drafted.” Instead he signed with the New York Mets as a free agent the following summer, starting his career at Kingsport of the Appalachian League, where he posted a 2.54 ERA and led his team with eight saves. Meanwhile, Bell’s life changed in other ways. He married his wife, Nicole, and adopted her young daughter, Jasmyne. Heath and Nicole had three children of their own: Jordyn, born with Down syndrome (“our blessing in disguise”10), Reece, and Rhett. Back on the field, Bell responded with a stellar return to Binghamton, notching a 1.18 ERA and six saves before a midseason promotion to Triple-A Norfolk. He enjoyed less success at the higher level and again posted pedestrian numbers in a 2003 encore but now found himself just one step away from the big leagues. From 2004 to 2006, Bell rode the proverbial shuttle between New York and Norfolk, often needed for stretches but never quite able to stick. And while his Triple-A performances dazzled, his stints with the Mets — with irregular roles and usage — didn’t go so well. In 81 appearances with the Mets, he posted a 4.92 ERA and zero saves. By the end of his tenure in New York he was already 28 years old, an age when most players have either established themselves or started preparing for their next career. As Bell later noted, even his family was ready for him to move on. Bell received a new lease on life when the Mets traded him and fellow reliever Royce Ring to the San Diego Padres for reliever Jon Adkins and outfielder Ben Johnson. Returning to the West Coast, Bell immediately thrived as Trevor Hoffman’s set-up man in 2007, posting a 2.02 ERA in 81 appearances and fanning 102 batters.Bell also became a legend in the Padres clubhouse, known as much for his zany antics (he was fond of flying remote-control helicopters in the clubhouse) as for his prowess on the mound. Bell took over the closer role after Hall of Fame closer Trevor Hoffman left the club, leading the National League with 42 saves and being named to the All-Star team. Perhaps not coincidentally, he’d lost 30 pounds before the season. Bell cleared the 40-save mark again in 2010 and 2011, making the All-Star team each time. At the 2010 midsummer classic, in Anaheim, Bell brought his father — then fighting lung cancer — to sit with him during media appearances and share the experience. It was the least he could for someone who had always made time for him: “He says he’s a proud father. I’m a proud son.”15In his third and final All-Star Game appearance, Bell sprinted in from the bullpen as usual before sliding into the pitcher’s mound and retiring the only batter he faced. When asked about the slide, Bell said, “I wanted the fans to have fun with this. The fans are really what matters. They’re the ones that show up. They’re the ones who pay our salary." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/playballkid/message

Join Dr. J. and Hootie Hoot with our first Major League Baseball guest, former 3x All-Star, Heath Bell. The picture you see on the cover is of Heath Bell sliding into the mound at the 2011 All-Star Game at Chase Field in Arizona as he entered the game. He took out a huge chunk of grass during his slide and severely stained his pants before even throwing a single pitch. "I wanted the fans to have fun with this," Bell said. Heath shares his experiences with hall-of-famers like Pedro Martinez, Trevor Hoffman and Mike Piazza while giving us insight into how he's currently giving back to the game he loves as a youth coach. He discusses what he loves about the game (here is a hint: It's not metrics) and who he loves to watch and why and what we could all in this country learn from being in a major league baseball locker room. He talks about his incredible family, in particular his daughter who has down syndrome and picks up his first save in The Sports Deli during the famous rapid fire, "This or That" segment of the podcast. Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex previews the AL East with Chad Finn of The Boston Globe and Boston.com. Alex and Chad talk about the Blue Jays and Orioles, and which team has a better chance of ascending to the top of the division in 2014. The Rays added Grant Balfour and Heath Bell to their bullpen this offseason, and also elected to not trade soon-to-be free agent David Price. Though the Red Sox and Yankees appear to be favorites in the division this year, the Rays could have a chance to sneak in and capture the divisional crown. Although the Yankees spent roughly $500 million free agency this winter, Chad believes they're not better than the Red Sox. The Yankees may be improved at certain positions, but their overall roster still has a litany of question marks. It was a relatively quiet offseason for the Red Sox, as the club didn't deviate from its long-term plan. Alex and Chad don't have a problem with the Red Sox's uneventful winter, and feel that the team is in a terrific position at the start of the season. Ryan Dempster announced he's stepping away from baseball in 2014, which will clear up $13.25 million of salary on the books. Alex says Dempster should be admired for walking away on his own terms, and for giving the Red Sox even more financial flexibility. That saved money could be used to pursue Stephen Drew, as the Red Sox continued to be tied to the shortstop. Manager John Farrell spoke about Drew's status over the weekend, and said the Red Sox should make a decision about whether or not they want to bring him back as soon as possible. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex calls Derek Jeter's pre-season retirement a selfish move. Jeter is one of the greatest shortstops to ever play the game, but his 162-game long retirement ceremony is going to be nauseating. For some reason, those who cover Jeter have an urge to portray him as a flawless demigod. It's going to one long, unbearable summer. Email Alex at ajreimer0@gmail.com or areimer@streetwise-media.com. Alex and Chad also talk about how the Red Sox will seek to replace Jonathan Papelbon and whether we'll know David Ortiz will be returning to the Red Sox by the end of the week. Alex spouts more analysis on Valentine, and says that given the reported choices, Valentine was a good hire as a "mercenary" to get the most out of this core over two seasons. The Winter Meetings are on the horizon, and Alex asks five key questions regarding what the Red Sox will do in Dallas.
