It's the same feeling for the group, but different for everyone with a deep attachment to baseball, as explained by Mal and Griff. Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for Chatham-Kent. A CK councillor is looking to clear the air about the municipality's plans to hire a Deputy Chief Administrative Officer. A threatening voicemail caused a heavy police presence at Entegrus earlier this week. The Chatham Coloured All-Stars have been snubbed by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame again. For the first time, all of Canada's provincial and territorial leaders are in Washington, D.C. together.
By sheer force of will, Paul Godfrey built a Major League Baseball team in what was then Canada's sleepy second city, when everyone doubted it could be done. (He ended up in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and the Blue Jays would go on to win two World Series.) He helped shake up a staid and boring local newspaper scene with the scrappy Toronto Sun, before going on to build a national media empire. Now, after 14 years at the helm of Postmedia, Godfrey is pivoting again. The legendary politician and businessman talks with Brian this week about his astounding rise from his humble start in local government to where he is now. And he says one of his next projects will be to trying to once again help Toronto, the city he loves, which he says has become a city in decline. If you vacation in Canada and want to have people buy you a Molson, mention Ernie Whitt's name. He is practically royalty in Canada, a member of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and a beloved All Star catcher for the Toronto Blue Jays. In fact, he was the last "original" member of the Jays, having been drafted by the Red Sox, but the Blue Jays took him in the expansion draft, as he was the anchor of the team for a decade. His power at the plate and his defensive prowess behind the plate made him one of MLB's great players from 1975-1991. And man, does he love talking golf! Ernie Whitt is our guest on this week's episode of The Approach Shot.

When we're able to get in touch with a Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Houston Astros Hall of Fame member, among others, we roll out the red carpet. Such is the case with Terry Puhl, whose career kind of speaks for itself. A 15-year Major Leaguer and 18-year pro, with all but 15 games in the bigs coming with the Astros. He was an MLB All-Star in 1978 and was outstanding, particularly in the field and on the base paths. Puhl helped the Astros win their first ever NL West Division crown and postseason berth in 1980. He now lives in Texas, and we were fortunate to sit down with him to talk about his career this past week. Special thanks to Scott Crawford at the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame for helping us connect with Terry to line up this conversation!
We start off the episode by recapping the MLB debut of St. Albert's own Erik Sabrowski, who went 1+ inning of shutout baseball in relief for the Cleveland Guardians in a 4-1 loss to Kansas City. We then take a look at some of the other major storylines, before we catch up with former MLB slugger and Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame member Matt Stairs, who was recently named a hitting coordinator with Dawgs Academy in Okotoks.

When describing Paul Godfrey's career, it's easier to ask the question - what hasn't he done? A prominent Canadian businessman and former politician, Paul became the publisher and CEO of the Toronto Sun in 1984 and played a pivotal role in the development of Toronto's SkyDome, which opened in 1989. Throughout his career, Godfrey has been influential in both the media and sports industries in Canada, with many saying he was the driving force in bringing MLB to Toronto. Now, in 2024, Paul joins Bob and John to talk about his recent induction into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame, his outstanding bet with the Bobcat himself, and much more to start another week of podcasting.
When you think of 13 year MLB veteran, you don't think of a ton of home runs. Nor do you think of a bucket of stolen bases. But as a left handed contact hitter, who hit well and was a great defensive player, Rob carved out a terrific career that got him inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. These days, he plays a lot of golf and is involved with the company that makes and sells the Core Energy Belt, which is being used by both baseball players and golfers alike. Rob talks about baseball, golf and the growth of Core Energy in Japan and here in the US on this episode of The Approach Shot.

The guys kick around all of the important issues this week like, how long has Dansby Swanson's offensive slump been going on (a long time), who should be the Cubs fourth outfielder when Seiya Suzuki returns and why should it be Ian Happ, and what to do with Petecrow when Seiya's return happens. They also ponder just how well Nick Madrigal would need to hit to actually be worth a big league roster spot and what current big leaguer can be used as the minimum threshold for that? They kick around ideas for Cubs' closer and make the case why Cade Horton's pitch and innings limit are fine but they should be occurring in Chicago, not Des Moines. They also make fun of how bad the Cardinals are, check out the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and talk about the time the Chicago Blitz traded themselves to Arizona. All that, and more, like the intro music to The Fall Guy, Gil Thorp comics and other stuff. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/desipio/message
