Rene Wenzel has a long history in the sport of cycling. He started out as a junior rider in Denmark. He was quite successful as a junior by winning Danish and Scandinavian Junior Road Championships. Once he moved up to the senior ranks he eventually moved to Belgium and France to race. By the end of 1980 Wenzel says he had mono. He says that was a tough 12 to 14 months. Wenzel would recover and eventually come over to the states with a friend and race. He would race track and criteriums quite successfully. By the late 80's he was back in Denmark and he would eventually retire with over 300 plus wins to his credit. Coaching would take over for Wenzel. In the 90's he would work with the U.S. Junior National Team, work with the Saturn team twice, and own and run the Subway team.Wenzel would eventually walk away from cycling. He says it was disappointing to see the drug situation in Europe when he would bring his team over for some early season racing. Wenzel and Angus Fraser would later be accused and sued for allegedly giving illegal substances to Greg Strock and Erich Kaiter when they were juniors. Wenzel denies the accusations. He recently left a position with the Indian Cycling Federation.

This is the second episode in a special series on gender identity policies in rowing. We're getting to know some of the people behind initiatives challenging the notion of fairness and inclusion in our sport. Since December 2022, World Athletics, World Rowing, USRowing and other national governing bodies, have announced updated gender identity policies. The Biden administration is proposing changes to Title IX. In response, voices across the rowing community have stood up for "fairness for women" and alternatively "inclusion for marginalized athletes." We're taking a closer look. Ann Strayer, OLY, was a self-described "natural" in a single in high school. She quickly earned a seat on the 1978 Junior National Team, and went on to row at Princeton 1978 to 1982. While at university she made her first National Team in 1981, followed by five more teams in the 1980s, culminating in a spot on the 1988 Olympic squad. Today, Strayer is the Varsity Women's Coach at Oakland United Rowing in Oakland, CA. In response to the ICONS petition seeking to define "eligibility for the women's/girl's categories to participants born female," Strayer and fellow OUR coach and Olympian Erin Cafaro have written a letter in support of USRowing's gender identity policy. They, along with 50+ Olympians and coaches who have signed the letter, strongly believe that the most important thing for scholastic transgender and non-binary athletes is to welcome them into boathouses, and allow them to row as the gender with which they identify. . QUICK LOOK 00:00 - Rachel and Tara talk gender identity policies, the ICONS petition fighting for fairness for females, and the letter that Strayer and Erin Cafaro have written in support of gender inclusive policies. 08:15 - Team Huddle: Coach Strayer's bio in 45 seconds  09:10 - Rapid Fire Q&A 12:40 - Growing up in Cape Cod, MA: sailboats, softball, and basketball. Marianne Hogan may be a relatively new name for many in the running and trail ultra community but she has been on an absolute streak this year, with podium finishes at both Western States where she placed 3rd female (in her first 100 mile race) and Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc, where she just ran the race of her life crossing the line as the second female despite experiencing a significant injury in her hip mid race. She is only the 3rd woman in history to podium finish at both races in the same year. The previous two were Nikki Kimball in 2007 and Krissy Moehl in 2009. Marianne is 32 years old and currently calls Montreal home.Born and raised in a small town in Quebec, Marianne grew up with a passion to swim, bike and run – and race triathlons. She has had a colourful athletic career as a triathlete and after participating in three World Championships on Triathlon Canada's Junior National Team, she joined Triathlon Canada's Para program in 2019 to guide Jessica Tuomela. The pair enjoyed great success, culminating in participation in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.   Today's guest wears a lot of impressive hats: Former Socceroo | Broadcaster | Adjunct Professor, Sport & Social Responsibility | Author | and Human Rights Activist Who else could this be but Craig Foster AM? Following a decorated football career as Australia's 419th Socceroo and 40th Captain, Craig has become one of Australia's most respected sports people as a broadcaster, social justice advocate, and human rights campaigner. Craig represented Australia in the Junior National Team at age 15 in the first FIFA Under 16 World Cup in China, 1985 where he was selected in the FIFA Team of the Tournament. He would later go on to represent Australia at senior level on 29 occasions including as Captain. Following retirement, he quickly became one of Australia's most respected sports broadcasters with an 18-year, triple Logie-winning career with Australia's multicultural broadcaster, Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) as part of The World Game (TWG) team which included five FIFA World Cups and four FIFA Women's World Cups as well as the UEFA Champions League, English Premier League and domestic competitions. He is a vocal supporter of a higher humanitarian intake by Australia and particularly an increased intake for Afghan refugees. A smidgen of his relevant humanitarian work efforts includes being: A member of the Australian Multicultural Council under the Department of Home Affairs, Immigration and Citizenship division An Ambassador for Amnesty Australia, the Affinity Intercultural Foundation, and Addison Road Community Centre including their #RacismNotWelcome campaign for Local Councils across Australia, Pushing Barriers, an Australia Committee member with Human Rights Watch, Advisory Council member of the Australian Human Rights Institute, UNSW and a Director of the Crescent Foundation. His humanitarian activism extends to several, high-profile campaigns including #SaveHakeem to free Bahraini refugee Hakeem al-Araibi from a Thai prison for which he was a Finalist for the Australian Human Rights Commission Medal. He is a former columnist for the Sun Herald, author, and co-author of several books including ‘Fighting for Hakeem' by Hachette Australia, and writes for the Guardian, The Age, and other publications and holds a Professional Coaching License and helped guide dozens of Australia's finest young female and male talents, many of whom graduated to Australia's National Teams. In 2019, the Australian Financial Review recognized Craig as a ‘True Australian Leader', the Sydney Morning Herald as one of the ‘People that Defined 2019′, he was the recipient of the 2020 NSW Government Humanitarian Award for his work with sport and human rights, an Australian Human Rights Commission Medal finalist, was awarded the Australian Muslim Council 2020 Abyssinian Medal and was a finalist for the NSW 2021 Australian of the Year. In 2021, Craig became a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Australia Day Honours List which he dedicated to and shared with his refugee friends and all refugees seeking safety around the world. In 2020, Craig contributed to the acquisition of Humanitarian Visas and evacuation of around one hundred predominantly female Afghan athletes from Kabul escaping the Taliban including the Afghan National Women's Football Team and Taekwondo athletes, as well as Afghanistan's several Paralympians who went on to compete at the Tokyo Paralympic Games weeks later.  Working with Australia's Immigration Minister, Alex Hawke, and Foreign Minister, Marise Payne as well as trusted members of the Australian Parliament, Craig used his sporting and political connections to secure the safety of many Afghans.  Shortly after the Kabul airport was closed to evacuation flights, Craig also assisted 15 young girls to escape a Kabul safe house while the Taliban searched from house to house for them and acquired the Humanitarian Visas for them to resettle in Australia. Somehow, Craig was nominated as one of Australia's Best Dressed Men despite spending his life in ripped jeans and board-shorts and still plays football for the Waverley Old Boys Over 35's in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, Australia where he tries to relive old glories. Today, Craig advises on athlete activism for some of Australia's most prominent sportspeople and is an Adjunct Professor of Sport and Social Responsibility with Torrens University, Australia where he has developed an online course called ‘Sport for Good' which teaches athletes and sport practitioners how to utilize sport for social justice and progressive issues around the world. Craig holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), a Master's Degree in International Sports Management, and a Postgraduate Degree in Football Management. In this episode, Craig discusses: How do you define human rights? Maybe a practical example of what that is in practice. Is it just about equality of opportunities in a legal and moral sense or much more? What prompted you to become a human rights advocate? Was there a trigger for you that made you focus on this and what keeps you going when issues like Manus Island detainees among other cases must sometimes feel like they will never go away? Many of us witnessed through the consistent media coverage your role in freeing footballer Hakeem al-Alraibi in 2019. That was a relentless campaign and one that I imagine you had to pull on every lever you had to make that case stay front of mind in not just the media but the government's agenda. Reflecting on that experience, what did that reveal about Australia's human rights approach? We have a problematic human rights record in Australia and the First Nations people have suffered and continue to suffer – for example, ABS figures from 30 June 2021 stated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners made up 30% of all prisoners and 78% had experienced prior adult imprisonment. And life expectancy remains much lower than non-Indigenous Australians. How can we rectify this huge and relentless situation faster and in a way that is humane? Take away: What is your final takeaway message for us on The Politics of Human Rights?   To connect with Craig: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/craig-foster-am-69b9a72b/ W: www.craigfoster.net

Boston Warkentin was among a handful of Okotoks Dawgs players recently named to Baseball Canada's Junior National Team which took on the US in a best-of-seven Friendship Series. He pitched in ten games for Dawgs Black this summer before being summoned to the national team, where he impressed every time he stepped on the bump. Originally from Delta, BC, the 18-year-old righthander came through Dawgs Academy, where he's elevated his game to being listed by the Canadian Baseball Network as the 11th best Canadian prospect for the 2022 MLB Draft. He's also committed to the University of Washington, another Division 1 powerhouse. We talked about it all with Boston  in a phone chat last week.

This week I have Mike Manuel on the show. Mike is a former track & field coach and current professional boxing coach out of Legacy Boxing Club and Olympus Boxing Club here in Calgary Alberta. Speaking about one of his former track and field athletes who won provincial titles and competed for the Junior National Team for Canada, Mike stated his drive to never be second and his year round commitment to staying in shape as the reason this athlete and other elite athletes like him are able to be successful..Further, talking to Mike about his role as a coach for his current athletes what really stuck out to me was his take on the "Art of Coaching." Mike discusses his role as a coach as simply being someone there to help his athletes be successful. It is about more than simply what happens in training, but a wholesome approach. His commitment to continuous growth with his athletes, as well as helping his athletes in every area of their lives is incredible. I really believe what he is doing now is a testament to what the boxing world is going to see from spectacular athletes coming out of Calgary such as Jordan McNaughton and Angelo Habib, two of the athletes Mike discusses within the show..Thank you for tuning into another episode of the podcast! Madelynn's (Maddy) clay target shooting experience began when she was just 12 years old at a local 4-H club, shooting American trap. A few years later, her father introduced her to her local high school team where she shot American trap, skeet, and sporting clays through the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP). Eventually, Maddy branched out into the more non-traditional disciplines such as doubles, handicap, and 5-stand. In the Spring of 2014, Maddy attended an SCTP development camp held at the Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The camp was designed to introduce young SCTP athletes into the Olympic disciplines of shotgun sports. Maddy began shooting in USA Shooting sanctioned competitions in the summer of 2016 at the Junior Olympic Championships. She competed in her first selection match in Fort Benning, Georgia at the 2017 Spring Selection Match. In 2018, Maddy earned a spot on her first official USA Shooting Team to attend the World Championships in Changwon, Korea. She also earned a spot on the Junior National Team at the National Junior Olympic Championships right before attending the 2018 World Championships in the fall. Normally after competing on the junior national level, the next step is the U.S. National Team. Maddy bypassed the normal progression and secured a spot on the United States Olympic Trap Team in March 2020. Our guest this week is a man who has dreams of being on an Opening Day roster in the not-too-distant future. Damiano Palmegiani has had quite the journey already in his young baseball career. The native of Surrey, BC came to Alberta as a teenager to take his career to the next level with Vauxhall Academy. He did that in spades, making it to the Tournament-12 in Toronto and then Baseball Canada’s Junior National Team. In 2018, Palmegiani was drafted in the 35th round by his favourite team, the Toronto Blue Jays. He decided to go to school, first heading to Cal State Northridge. But he struggled on the field, hitting .157 in 31 games. The COVID-19 pandemic got in the way of any possible rebound in 2020, leading him to a change of scenery with the College of Southern Nevada for 2021. And he has shined with the Coyotes. As we record this, Palmegiani is hitting .376 with 13 home runs and 40 RBIs in 31 games. In this wide-ranging conversation, the 6-1, 195-pound sophomore talks about the long road to Nevada, how he turned things around, his commitment announcement earlier this year to Division-1 Arizona and much more.

Terrence Jennings is a former London 2012 Olympics Bronze medalist. He is a coach in the World Class Athlete Program, an initiative of the US army that helps athletes to focus on training and represent the United States at international competition. He started to compete very young and make it to the Youth United States National Team.He is very passionate for the sport, he shares with us some important moments of his career and how he still enjoys training, coaching and watching videos to learn. He has learned from amazing taekwondo masters and coaches like Patrice Remarck and Juan Moreno, in the interview he talked about them and how they helped him to grow in taekwondo.Every taekwondo journey starts with the first classTerrence Jennings was a very active kid. So, when he saw an ad of a new local martial arts school showing a ninja turtle he was immediately attracted to the sport. And since the first class he loved all the flashy movements of taekwondo. He loved playing different sports, like football, basketball and soccer. But he mentions that in team sports there are always things that you can't control because you depend on others.Just one chance to break the boardTerrence's first instructor was very strict. When you were at a belt testing and you had to break a board you only had one chance. Terrence remembers a class partner who in his belt test failed to break the board. Everybody thought that he would have another chance, but no, the instructor made him to wait three months more to do the test again and reattempt to break the board.Terrence reflects that sometimes you don't have a second chance. And you have to do your best when you have the chance.First competitionsTerrence remembers that at first his school was more focused on point sparring. In one of his first competitions he was disqualified for excess of contact, although he was a child he felt disappointed. He thought that maybe that was not the right activity for him. After a while the school started to focus more on Olympic taekwondo and that's how Terrence was introduced in what later would be his way of life.Terrence's first competition was when he was a green belt. His parents drove him one hour to the place of the tournament in Maryland. As in many children tournaments he remembers that the only thing he did was kicking. He went to the middle of the ring and when the fight started it was just one minute of continuous kicking by both sides. No checking or feints, not moving, just kicking until the coach told him to stop.Making a teamEarly in his career he met Coach Patrice Remarck, a two time World Medalist from Ivory Coast who was studying at the University in Washington DC and started to coach in Terrence's academy Olympic style taekwondo.None of the students really know what exactly was Olympic taekwondo, they just followed the instructions of Mr Remarck. One of the strategies that coach Remarck did was to bring the team atmosphere into the dojang. With warm ups, uniforms and behaviour that gives the children that sense of being part of something bigger.Coach Remarck was very strict about earning the right to use a National Team uniform. You could not just put the USA letters in your uniform because you were not allowed to train with that dobok unless you were already a national team member. That is a great motivation, to earn the right to use your country's name in your uniform.Under coach Remarck guidance Terrence's career started to go upwards, he made it to the Junior National Team and started to compete internationally. Before ranking tournaments coach Remarck encouraged his athletes to go to international events like the French or Belgium opens in order to gain experience from fighting the best athletes in other countries.A hard decision and the London 2012 Olympic GamesAn interesting point of the interview was the decision of changing his training place pursuing his dreams.Having an elite coach was a blessing for Terrence's. It allowed him to compete internationally and to be one of the top athletes of the USA. But in order to pursue his dream of going to the London Olympics and to win a medal he had to make some difficult decisions. In a combat sport at an elite level you also need to train with partners that challenge you all the time. The story I am going to share with today is very close to my heart. Its is about sport, passion, Olympic Trials, winning, sacrifice, losing, tears and the career ENDING injury. But don't worry, there will be no sad ending. Actually, this career-ending injury was a catalyst which has pushed my today guest on the path of self-improvement.Alex story is very common. I have seen many of my friends being chewed up by the system and their health destroyed. The truth is that in sports, the results are most important. The qualification, the medal, the PB, that's what counts, that what brings you and your coach fame and recognition. Players, as young as 8-10 yrs age are only small cogs in the machine, and when they get injured, they are getting dropped. Sometimes the demanding coach or pushing parent are to be blamed. But sometimes A highly motivated athlete can push himself to the limit, make it or break it attitude is very common. The story of Alex, ex-pro Canadian swimmer wasn't different. He started when I was 8 and went on to make a Junior National Team, Olympic Trials, Swimming International and competing in the NCAA Division 1 in the States. And then he got injured. But the is a happy ending in this story. Even if you are broken, you can rebuild yourself, you can still be active and powerful. Its take time and some work but it is possible. Listen to the podcast to learn what exactly to do.

In this episode, Dr. Greg Lane interviewed Joanie Anderson, former X games gold medalist in snowboarding. Joanie grew up home-schooled in a large family in South Lake Tahoe. Her classroom was the mountains, so Joanie and her sisters naturally became competitive snowboarders. Joanie was eleven when she won her first national championship and continued to win nationals for many years following. When she was 16, Joanie was invited to join the U.S. Junior National Team. She won her first Junior World title in New Zealand in 2002, and the following year in Germany. At 17, she competed in her first X Games- competing in both boardercross and halfpipe. Joanie competed in X Games for eight consecutive years, winning a silver medal in 2006, gold in 2007, and bronze in 2010 in boardercross. At the 2009 Olympic test event in Vancouver, she dislocated her hip during a time trial run. That event began her phasing out of competitive snowboarding and into her next adventure as a student of Chinese Medicine at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. Dr. Lane and Ms. Anderson talked about Joanie’s experience with diet, exercise, yoga, and other methods she relied on to become a champion.
