Through the years, I've maintained transparency about my journey with alcoholism—a label I've embraced in the solitude of self-discovery. However, this characterization doesn't resonate with most individuals. The majority of drinkers engage in a marginally excessive indulgence in alcohol. While this behavior may not be catastrophic in the traditional sense, it does raise discernible concerns. The persistent hangovers, lethargy, and resulting melancholy it begets become tiresome. The desire to desist is tangible, but the seamless integration of alcohol into social and professional settings renders the prospect of abstention seemingly insurmountable. Today's guest found himself ensnared within precisely this behavior pattern. Ruari Fairbairns is a former oil broker from London who—after a falling out with booze—decided it was time to put the plug in the jug. The benefits were so profound that he later walked away from his career in finance to become a full-time advocate for an alcohol-free lifestyle. Ruari, alongside collaborator Andy Ramage (featured in episode 444 in 2019), co-founded a pioneering institution, One Year No Beer, in 2015, a subscription-based bastion of sobriety with over 100,000 global members. Beyond his role as co-founder, Fairbairns co-authored the UK bestseller The 28-Day Alcohol-Free Challenge. He also co-hosts the One Year No Beer Podcast, guiding listeners on a journey of wisdom and sobriety. In this episode, we delve into the gradual transformation of society's relationship with alcohol, dissecting the negative repercussions on both mind and body. We explore the need for heightened awareness around alcohol, challenging the traditional narrative and embracing a healthier relationship with it. Ruari guides us through compelling discussions on stress, trauma, ADHD, emotional sobriety, and the pivotal role of community in the transformative journey. As we welcome the New Year and the possibilities it presents, I offer this conversation as an encouragement to consider the many ways in which alcohol continues to interfere with your health, hopes, and dreams. Nick is with ‘One Year No Beer’ founder Ruari  Fairbairns talking about the movement and community he has built and his passion. As someone who has experienced a professional life where alcohol is very much part of the culture, Ruari discusses the reality of alcohol and why many believe that alcohol is making life better when actually it’s making it worse. The movement and platform he has created gives people the opportunity to undertake a challenge that reveals the reality of their relationship with alcohol and enables them to understand what they are really seeking in life. Ruari is passionate about his community but is also a hugely successful entrepreneur building an empire that is providing aspiration for those involved.   KEY TAKEAWAYS We are all in a toxic relationship with alcohol there is no safe level as it’s a poison. The ‘take control’ course is for those who have taken an extended break from alcohol and want to have a structure in place moving forward. Empires have been previously built on alcohol;  it is said to have greased the wheels of many deals. Can you as an entrepreneur give yourself an upgrade by taking a break from alcohol? Yes, and you will gain more energy, productivity, clarity and time. People use alcohol to switch off but in reality, alcohol creates anxiety. You should celebrate the wins as an entrepreneur in business and in life but you don’t need alcohol to do it. People want to help other people and we are creating a platform where people can help each other. When we hit the power of unlocking community we will be hitting millions of users who will be empowering each other to change their relationship with alcohol. The principles of change are the same whatever the addiction. If we can give people a platform and the tools to work out what they need to change in their lives then we can change the world. Community is free to build and when you have built a community it will have a wider impact than just those directly involved. The ripple effect is immeasurable.   BEST MOMENTS ‘I can have a drink whenever and where ever I want to, I just choose not to’ ‘Creating a movement that is challenge-based is a brilliant way of marketing’ ‘I know that changing your relationship with alcohol will change your life’   VALUABLE RESOURCES Empire Builders Podcast  One Year No Beer website   ABOUT THE HOST Nick James Nick dropped out of university at the age of 21 and failed spectacularly with his first coaching business, which forced him to take a £16k/yr telesales job.  Within 12 months he was the top performer and left to start his second business at 24. This time he discovered a winning formula and before long had a multi-six-figure company. He then made a huge mistake which nearly put him out of business and cost him £50,000 in personal cash! Fortunately, Nick kept it afloat, turned it around, and sold that business 2 years later in a seven-figure deal.  He then co-founded a multi-million-pound marketing company, which he exited in 2015, and created Expert Empires. Today, Expert Empires is known as the UK's number one business event for Experts, with world-renowned celebrity speakers like Gary Vaynerchuk, Grant Cardone, Chalene Johnson, David Goggins, and Lewis Howes gracing the stage. Nick also specialises in helping Coaches, Consultants, Speakers, Trainers, and Authors take their businesses from zero to six figures and beyond through his Expert Empires Mastermind programme.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The National Philanthropic Trust calls donor-advised funds the most popular method of charitable giving—nearly a half-million accounts hold $110 billion in assets. Now a court fight between a wealthy family and a fund to which they donated stock may offer a look into how these funds work. Universities and community foundations run their own charitable funds, but big-name investment managers like JP Morgan, Vanguard, and Fidelity operate them, too. They often convert complex donations—art, stock, or cryptocurrency, for example—into cash that can be given to charities over a period of years, often with tax advantages. The Fairbairns sued Fidelity Charitable, saying the fund violated contract law by promising a sophisticated liquidation and then selling their donated stock too quickly. That caused the value of the stock to plunge, lowering the value of their $100 million donation and the tax deduction they had hoped to receive along with it. Ohio State University professor Brian Mittendorf has been researching donor-advised funds. He spoke with Bloomberg Tax reporter Aysha Bagchi about the Fairbairn case and the tax and policy ramifications of these funds. Drinking can have a profound effect not just on the person doing the drinking, but on their relationships with others as well. This is true whether one person in the relationship is doing most of the drinking or when both people are drinking.  In today’s episode, Ruari’s wife, Jennifer Fairbairns, joins the podcast to talk about her story, her relationship with alcohol, and her relationship with Ruari. Jennifer talks about her family and growing up in Sweden, her modeling career that began at the age of 16, and what it was like to meet Ruari for the first time in London – at a costume party where he was dressed as Gene Simmons. She describes the beginning of their relationship, which included a lot of clubbing, dancing, and drinking.  “It’s sad to say that it’s normal, but it kind of seems what’s normal, when you have a young couple of a certain age and they party really hard, they always seem to have quite a volatile relationship.”  Jennifer discusses her issues with anxiety and depression, and how those issues were affected and exacerbated by alcohol. She also talks about the effects that drinking – both her own and Ruari’s – had on their marriage during the early years. She describes traveling around the world and going to couples counseling for the first time. She talks about motherhood and how the maternal instinct drove her to begin settling down.  Jennifer also describes a difficult period in their marriage that led her to temporarily leave with their daughter and return to her family’s home in Sweden. She and Ruari eventually reconciled and she returned home, and things were better for awhile, but eventually they began to backslide.  Jennifer talks about the changes that she observed in Ruari when he first decided to try an alcohol-free challenge, including the fact that he began to look younger and seem happier. At that point, Jennifer was pregnant with their second child and also not drinking. When she returned to drinking, she realized that it increased her mental health issues and made her feel worse. She talks about replacing bad habits, like drinking, with good ones, and how she started to get involved with One Year No Beer and get into CrossFit.  Jen talks about her love of fitness, and Jen and Ruari discuss their participation in the Spartan races. She also talks about her plans for the future, which include increasing her involvement with One Year No Beer, focusing on fitness and family, and possibly pursuing a coaching course.  LINKS & RESOURCES:  OYNB Website: https://www.oneyearnobeer.com/  OYNB Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/Oneyearnobeer/  OYNB Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/199505820380513/  OYNB Twitter: https://twitter.com/oynbuk/  OYNB Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oneyearnobeer/

Burpees? Quitting carbs? Daily cold showers? Fasting? According to Fairbairns, creator "The Ultimate Social Challenge," it's one simple thing: dropping alcohol. He used his own abstention as a case study and experienced dramatic improvements in every aspect of his life, including his career, family, friends as well as his mental and physical health. But, how, exactly, do you drop a habit that is so deeply conditioned? Fairbairns shares concrete tips and tricks to try the challenge for 30 days, 90 days, a year or a lifetime.    Want proof? We interviewed his wife Jennifer too! Lessons: 1. If the results of abstaining from alcohol were sold as a pill, it would be a billion dollar business.
 2. You’re not giving up anything if you are, in fact, replacing it with something better.
 3. Bad habits don’t need telling off; they need replacing.

Ruari Fairbairns used to be a wild drinker in a culture where alcohol is accepted and even expected. As he grows older and starts a family, he realizes he can't have a happy marriage and a successful career if he continues to drink. He decides to quit, but he finds that the people he used to party with couldn't understand that he wasn't going to drink anymore. This is when he and a friend come up with the idea of the One Year No Beer, a challenge for people who want to try a sober lifestyle but don't have the support from family and friends.
