Today I'm grateful to be joined by my very good friend Darren Scanlon, a man who turned his life around and is now living proof of the power of determination and community. Darren opens up about how he faced the harsh reality that if he didn't change his health, drinking habits, and lifestyle, he wouldn't live long enough to see his kids grow up. That realization sparked his journey to transformation. He found inspiration through Andy Ramage's One Year No Beer and joined several hiking groups, where he built strong connections and found his tribe. These communities were key in helping him stay sober and rebuild his life. Today, Darren is eight years sober and thriving. He even ran the Dublin Marathon in 2024, proving that with the right mindset and support, anything is possible. This episode is about resilience, mental health, personal growth, and the importance of surrounding yourself with people who lift you up. You can follow Darren and his inspiring journey on Instagram at @the_sober_hiker. Be sure to check out his page for more on his hikes, sobriety journey, and the amazing work he's doing with the Celbridge Boys Club.

In the UK, 82% of adults drink alcohol, 48% of adults drink once per week, yet it is widely known as a toxin to the body on many levels, and it's primary action is a depressant. 5% of all deaths worldwide are linked to alcohol, with alcohol related issues rising significantly since the pandemic. But, alcohol is a cultural and societal norm, it's everywhere and it's totally normal to drink it, more normal than any other drug in circulation. It's used to enjoy yourself, unwind, relieve stress, and escape your problems. So the question is, how much is too much, is one drink ok, or are we missing its true effects not just on our physical health, but on our mental health. And if you exercise and drink, is it ok, or holding you back? I've been particularly interested in this since going alcohol free. It's been 6 months now, and in this podcast I'll share my experience, some physiological statistics around alcohol use, how I accidently started this experiment, and my argument for a life without alcohol. Today's conversation is with Ruari Fairbairns. Ruari is the co-founder of One Year No Beer, podcast host and Ted-X Speaker. Having built a successful career as an oil broker, Ruari went on a journey to redefine his relationship with alcohol and has gone onto build and inspire a movement that empowers others and challenge society's perceptions about alcohol. Expect to learn the potential cost alcohol can have on health, productivity, and relationships, the deep rooted societal impact of alcohol, the power forces, traditions and advertising spend which engrains it into so much of our lives, and why you don't have to conform. Ruari offers insights into his journey of breaking free from alcohol, emphasising the benefits on mental clarity, physical health, and personal success. Like any time I've discussed a conscious reframing of alcohol and elective sobriety on the podcast, this episode does not necessarily address those impacted by Alcohol Use Disorder or an addiction to the substance. Today's conversation is primarily focused on seeing where alcohol is holding uni back from your potential and seeing what you could unlock. Ruari shares some amazing data that just 6% of people want to give up alcohol completely, but the vast majority of the remainder surveyed do want to reduce their intake and reassess their relationship. I know this episode can help you do that. Today's episode is sponsored and supported by Hussle. Hussle is the way to get access to 1000s of UK gyms, pools and spas with one simple membership. I've been a Hussle user since 2014 when my first graduate sales job took me down to Manchester, Leeds, Norwich and beyond. It enables me to access gyms wherever I am with work or socially as well as get access to specific facilities like saunas and spas. Hussle is, of course, available to individuals, but what is really exciting is that companies can now partner with Hussle to give their staff members fitness access as an employee benefit. Anyone who listens to a podcast like this one knows that making it easier to exercise and access facilities is a great way to boost employee physical, mental and financial wellbeing. We all know that alcohol is a toxin with numerous effects on our health - from weight gain, to sleep and mood disruption as well as causing multiple cancers, diabetes, heart disease, gut dysbiosis, liver damage and dementia - even at "socially acceptable levels." Many of us drink in moderation and don't consider it to be a "problem"- but today I'm discussing an interesting way of reframing your relationship with alcohol and being very clear about where it might be causing problems in your life. I came across an amazing community called "One Year No Beer" (link and tag on social) and joined their 28 day alcohol free challenge. This challenge is supported with emails, videos and connecting with others on the same journey, and invites you to experience how you feel without alcohol for a prolonged period. Like me- a break from drinking makes most people realize that we are being held back by alcohol, and without it many things improve! My personal goal is to be someone who drinks "as much as I like as often as I like"- which will amount to very little, and not very often.

Over the past five years, it's been incredible to see how the alcohol-free landscape has changed. Pubs, restaurants and supermarkets boast a range of appealing 0% options. We're seeing a rise in AF communities, influencers, bars and events. There has been a marked cultural shift towards acceptance of not drinking – and that's in no small part down to today's guest.Andy Ramage is one of the world's leading alcohol-free performance coaches. Since his first appearance on this podcast, in 2019, countless listeners have got in touch to share how they've transformed their lives by giving up alcohol.Andy co-founded the One Year No Beer movement and recently co-created the Dryy app and AF community. Collectively, these innovations have helped hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of what he calls ‘middle lane' moderate drinkers transform their health and happiness. He is also the author of two best-selling books - The 28 Day Alcohol Free Challenge and Let's Do This, and is one of only a few coaches to hold a Masters degree in coaching psychology and positive psychology. Many of us discover alcohol as a teenager. We start to believe we can't socialise, dance or talk to strangers without it – and we carry these myths with us long into adulthood. We think others will find us boring if we don't drink. Hangovers become a celebrated end to a ‘great night out'. And we play down negative effects such as risky behaviour, poor sleep, low mood or junk food cravings.Andy is passionate about reversing all these beliefs and behaviours. He explains his ‘ambivalence seesaw' – a framework you can use to work out your current relationship with alcohol and start to shift it. We discuss why moderation isn't a good tactic, why Dry January often fails, and why slip-ups are part of the learning process. And he shares some valuable advice on coping with social pressure to drink, and cultivating a kinder self-talk. I've not drunk alcohol myself for four or five years now and I can honestly say there's not a moment when I miss it. But like Andy, I'm not here to judge anyone else, simply to encourage you to try out the benefits we've both felt. Andy is motivated, passionate and full of positivity, and someone who describes a life without alcohol, as a gift to yourself. He has managed to transform his own health, happiness and relationships and wants to inspire you to do the same.Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Through the years, I've maintained transparency about my journey with alcoholism—a label I've embraced in the solitude of self-discovery. However, this characterization doesn't resonate with most individuals. The majority of drinkers engage in a marginally excessive indulgence in alcohol. While this behavior may not be catastrophic in the traditional sense, it does raise discernible concerns. The persistent hangovers, lethargy, and resulting melancholy it begets become tiresome. The desire to desist is tangible, but the seamless integration of alcohol into social and professional settings renders the prospect of abstention seemingly insurmountable. Today's guest found himself ensnared within precisely this behavior pattern. Ruari Fairbairns is a former oil broker from London who—after a falling out with booze—decided it was time to put the plug in the jug. The benefits were so profound that he later walked away from his career in finance to become a full-time advocate for an alcohol-free lifestyle. Ruari, alongside collaborator Andy Ramage (featured in episode 444 in 2019), co-founded a pioneering institution, One Year No Beer, in 2015, a subscription-based bastion of sobriety with over 100,000 global members. Beyond his role as co-founder, Fairbairns co-authored the UK bestseller The 28-Day Alcohol-Free Challenge. He also co-hosts the One Year No Beer Podcast, guiding listeners on a journey of wisdom and sobriety. In this episode, we delve into the gradual transformation of society's relationship with alcohol, dissecting the negative repercussions on both mind and body. We explore the need for heightened awareness around alcohol, challenging the traditional narrative and embracing a healthier relationship with it. Ruari guides us through compelling discussions on stress, trauma, ADHD, emotional sobriety, and the pivotal role of community in the transformative journey. As we welcome the New Year and the possibilities it presents, I offer this conversation as an encouragement to consider the many ways in which alcohol continues to interfere with your health, hopes, and dreams. On this week's episode, we speak to the creator of One Year No Beer, Andy Ramage. Ramage, a casual drinker, woke up one day and wondered what life would be like if he stopped drinking for a year. And it did more for him than dieting, working out, or meditating. In fact, it changed the way he looked at life forever. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I want you to picture progress not as a straight line, but as a winding path full of twists, turns, and a few stumbling blocks. It's not about the end goal but about self-discovery and self-development. This podcast episode delves into the perception of progress and the prevalence of addiction in our society. It is a journey where we challenge the stereotypes, demystifying the addiction loop and how it can hinder personal growth. We are going to take an illuminating exploration into the realms of trauma and ego formation. How our past, particularly our childhood experiences, can shape our present and future. I am thrilled to have members of the Complete Control Community with us, brave individuals who are ready to share their experiences and insights into how they've navigated this labyrinth. This episode is not just about understanding ourselves but also about dealing with the external factors that can impact our lives. We'll dissect the science behind compulsive behaviour, the importance of managing stress, and the role of relationships in our lives. We'll also discuss practical ways to improve our mental health, such as the impacts of alcohol and caffeine, healthy changes in our daily habits, and positive adjustments in our environment. Join us as we journey through the complexities of human behaviour, mental health and, most importantly, the continuous journey towards self-improvement. Learn more about your ad choices. Co-Host Ruari Fairbairns (https://mountaintoppodcast.com/beer) We as men tend to have a complicated relationship with alcohol. My guest, Ruari Fairbairns is well aware of that. That's why even though he's a professional advocate for drinking less, he comes from a completely different perspective than the tee-totaller activists out there who would seem to label anyone with a beer in their hand as an alcoholic. Indeed, despite the catchy title of his practice, One Year No Beer, Ruari still occasionally pops the top himself. If that sounds hypocritical, it's not. His is no heavy-handed, all-or nothing stance. Rather, he brings the unique message of encouraging us as men in particular to change our relationship with alcohol. In his educated opinion, over time alcohol robs us of our mental and physical health to a degree we don't even realize. Once we give ourselves a break from it, we start thinking and feeling better...causing us to WANT to drink less (if at all), instead of feeling as if we're being strongarmed into sobriety. It's a novel approach designed for the HUGE demographic of men who like to drink, but aren't clinically alcoholics. A lot of men drink alcohol to unwind at the end of the day. But is that really the best way to do so? And what if we find ourselves only drinking in certain situations? What if we don't want to stop being in that situation? And is drinking non-alcoholic beer a decent way to quit alcohol? What if there was a new, high-tech alcohol substitute that gave you all the benefits with none of the downside? From navigating the male-dominated business world since 1989 to her unbridled passion for health, fitness, and extreme sports, Tracey's story is an absorbing mix of trials, triumphs, and transformation. Now onto the heart of the matter – Tracey's confrontation with her alcohol use. The business world had its share of high-spirited, alcohol-fuelled nights, which took a toll on Tracey's physical and mental health. But the real turning point came when she embarked on the One Year No Beer Program. Hear her recount the struggle of heavy drinking, the solace in the three-month challenge, and the subsequent realisations about her personality traits that helped her regain control over her life. In the world of sobriety, it's not just about abstinence but about reshaping one's perception towards alcohol. Tracey's journey with the One Year No Beer program gifted her with calmness, increased endurance, and a sense of control over her life. Her transformation also led to a ripple effect of positivity on the people around her. If you've been contemplating making that leap of faith into this program, Tracey's words will make you realise the value of investing in your health. Nick is joined by Ruari Fairbairns, the founder and CEO of One Year No Beer, to talk about alcohol - the impact it can have if you're a regular drinker, and what effects this can have on you as an entrepreneur. The ones who do this, are the ones who last the longest. As business owners, the idea that alcohol is something we need to be participating in, in order to relax and unwind, really needs to change. The evidence against it is overwhelming. We must find other ways to "take the edge off" when it comes to relaxation. We need to subsidise and fund research into more healthy forms of "relaxation" with the help of the alcohol industry itself. The first step towards building a better relationship with alcohol is to remove the belief that you are an "all or nothing" person, and change that belief to one of feeling fully in control. BEST MOMENTS 'I guarantee this will be one of the best things you can do for yourself' 'Entrepreneurship is a game of sustainability and attrition' 'I am entirely in control. Ruari Fairbairns is the co-founder and CEO of One Year No Beer, a global alcohol prevention program, aimed at anyone drinking more than 3 glasses of wine a week. Originally from a small island off the West coast of Scotland, in his younger years, he was no stranger to a pint or two. After moving down to London and starting a career as an oil broker, he quickly fell into the ‘work hard, play hard' style of living. After meeting his wife, and having a child, his old ways started to wear thin and create friction in relationships as well as cause me a few health problems. Reluctant to blame alcohol for any of these issues, he took an anger management programme where he quickly learned that coffee and alcohol are the two biggest instigators of anger. After reading this, I decided to drop them for the length of the programme (90 days) and that is when everything changed.Happier, healthier and fitter for being 90 days alcohol and caffeine free, he realised that no one was championing the benefits of abstaining from alcohol – but instead, all of the focus was on how bad drinking was for you. That is when he decided to set up One Year No Beer, a toolkit for surviving modern society alcohol-free.I absolutely love my current role because every day I get the opportunity to help people and I genuinely believe that this is what I was put on this earth to do. Changing my own relationship with alcohol was the starting point for my journey with OYNB, because this allowed me to create space in my life, to find my true meaning and purpose. I couldn't believe how much happier and healthier and fitter I felt. It has opened up an incredible life for myself and my family – one of meaning, purpose and ‘healthy' socialising. One my kids will be proud of and my wife loves being part of.(Michael Hanson is the host of the COSMIC Bridge podcast that inspires its listeners to find their higher purpose and connect their material and spiritual life through stories of breathwork teachers, shamans and stroke survivors. He is also the CEO of Growth Genie, an international B2B sales consultancy)
A personal journey. I didn't think I had a problem with alcohol, but in 2021 I found that it had become acceptable for me to pour myself a glass of wine most nights. The crazy thing was I was always looking at ways to improve my mindset and physical health, but up until that point, I'd excluded alcohol from the equation. You've got to have some vices, right? The problem was I was no longer getting what I needed from my relationship with alcohol. It was starting to become a bad habit that wasn't serving me. It may not have been the problem, but it certainly wasn't the solution, and whilst ever I was using it as a crutch for an instant dopamine hit, I was avoiding doing the inner work that was required to help me live a healthier, happier and more fulfilled life. I recognised that I needed to take a tactical break and stop drinking alcohol to really see what I was capable of. In this special joint episode with James Burtt producer of the One Year No Beer podcast, I give an honest insight into what it was like going completely alcohol-free for 2022 with no agenda. I share the pros and the cons without any of the fluff, so if you're considering making some changes, then this is worth a listen. The One Year No Beer Podcast will inspire you to take, or support your journey on a 30, 90 & 365 day challenge to stop drinking and focus on healthy habits. You can follow James Burtt Here: https://www.instagram.com/jamesburttofficialCheck out the One Year No Beer Podcast here: https://www.oneyearnobeer.com/podcasts/ VALUABLE RESOURCES On A Mission - https://omny.fm/shows/on-a-mission ABOUT THE HOST Not so long ago, life was barely recognisable for Ellie McKay, raising three children under five, battling post-natal depression, facing redundancy and walking into the job centre to claim benefits with a double pram, no confidence, and wracked with insecurities. This is part of my re-release series and was first aired in 2019. How does alcohol fit into your life? Have you ever given it any thought? My guest on this week's podcast is Andy Ramage, a performance coach and author. He's also one of the founders of One Year No Beer, a habit-changing programme that invites people to try 28, 90 or 365 days alcohol free – and see what it does for them. Andy was like many of us, he was not an alcoholic but he was what he calls ‘a middle lane drinker'. He would drink a little bit to unwind, at work events, when he saw his friends and probably a little bit more on the weekends. Andy started off on a 30 day trial without alcohol and now hasn't drunk any alcohol for six years and says he can't envisage doing so again. But his agenda is not to make you stop drinking for good. It's to demonstrate that taking a break from the booze can bring a surprising host of benefits, even if you don't think of yourself as a problematic drinker. Andy and I delve into just what some of those benefits might be. We discuss how alcohol is so ingrained in our social lives and often our work culture that often we don't even consider what life would be like without it. It's linked to every part of our lives from relaxation and fun to social bonding or even just relieving boredom. We talk about societal expectations and peer pressure and both of us share our own individual stories and our own journeys with alcohol. Finally, Andy shares some brilliant, practical tips to help anyone who maybe considering tactical break from alcohol. This is a really inspiring conversation. Whether you're already thinking of cutting down, it's not something you've considered, or even if you're already abstaining, I hope you'll find some life-enhancing lessons in this podcast. This week on the One Year No Beer Podcast Ruari and Jen welcome OYNB member Claire Holiday. During the conversation, Claire discusses her relationship with alcohol and how she started on her journey toward changing it. She shares how people label themselves based on their drinking habits and how the wrong beliefs around drinking culture can have a huge impact on many areas of life. Claire, like many others, found herself in a cycle of working in a busy job as well as raising her family and finding herself exhausted. A few glasses of wine in the evening were often her escape, but this simply masked the fact that she was physically and mentally depleted. Claire reveals that she didn't actually realise how much of a negative impact that alcohol was having on multiple areas of her life - what could seem like a fairly innocent way of relaxing was having some seriously detrimental effects. One of the biggest issues that Claire sees is how NOT drinking is still considered to be a taboo subject. On the topic of making positive changes, Claire highlights the importance of spending time with people that inspire you, especially those who may have shared goals and values. She explains that one of her principles in life is trying new things, which is what led her to initially undertake one of the OYNB challenges. She talks in detail about her experiences within the One Year No Beer community; stepping up from the 90-day and 365-day challenges into the mastermind. In this episode you will learn: How alcohol can affect many areas of your life Why going alcohol-free can still be a taboo subject Steps to supporting your alcohol-free journey How OYNB has impacted Claire's journey For more information on what is shared in this episode and to join the OYNB community which is the world's most powerful accountability group to access daily content and videos, guides and resources, access to the community, coaching access, online and ebooks then head to https://www.oneyearnobeer.com/takethechallenge now.
