It was a pleasure to chat with both 1991 Open Champion Ian Baker-Finch and our homegrown broadcasting extraordinaire, George Harper Junior to reflect on Ryan Fox's amazing win at Royal Birkdale. Ian gave great insight on Birkdale as a tournament test, his pride on how Australasia punches far above its weight on the world stage, and what advice he would give Ryan after his maiden major win.George has unique insight having been a broadcaster with The Open since 2018 and having played a good chunk of golf with Foxy over the years, including a pre-tournament tune up this year at North Berwick. We are proud to be presented by Power Turf NZ. A few weeks ago, Mark went along to a conference at the James Hutton Institute in Aberdeen. Under the banner of Living Labs, the institute brought together folk living in rural or island communities, and Mark chatted to Phyl Meyer from Tiree and Euan Maclachlan from Assynt to find out what sort of challenges they face in everyday life.The island of Fetlar is known as The Garden of Shetland due it being a very fertile and green. This week's presenter Rachel Bell took a trip there and visited the dilapidated Brough Lodge. It's a striking structure with a complicated past. But as Rachel hears, plans are in place to restore it to its former glory.As North Berwick's Fringe by the Sea festival kicks off this weekend, Mark got an early look at an immersive installation called the Nest. The project celebrates North Berwick and the northern gannet with new music composed by award-winning composer Erland Cooper and has been designed by artist Naomi McIntosh.Work is underway to preserve one of Scotland's only hill figures. The white stag on the side of Mormond Hill near Strichen in Aberdeenshire lay hidden for years, until the area was cleared by volunteers. Rachel went along to join in with the group called the 'Strichen Staggers', who are undertaking back-breaking work to keep the stag in good condition.In this week's Scotland Outdoors podcast, Mark visits the island of Lismore with Iris Smith from Explore Lismore. We hear an excerpt where they chat about what life is like on the small island off the coast of Oban.And this week's presenter Rachel Bell packs up her whole family and takes a few ferries to visit the island of Fetlar. We hear a snapshot of their day adventure to explore the beaches of the island.

In this episode, we speak from Renaissance in East Lothian, where we discuss the golf on the coast and how many different courses there are in the area. We talk about the quality of the turf, the variety of links courses, and how the region keeps surprising us even when we think we know it well.We also discuss golf shoes and metal spikes, including why spectators wear golf shoes at events and why professionals still use metal spikes, even though many clubs do not allow them. We compare different styles of shoes and talk about the practical and visual side of wearing them around a golf course.A major part of the conversation is our Eclectic 18 for East Lothian. We explain why holes from Musselburgh, Winterfield, Dunbar, Archerfield, Muirfield, Gullane, North Berwick, Luffness New and the Glen made the cut, and we talk through several of the choices, including standout par threes, par fours and par fives. We also note that some courses appear multiple times because of the strength of the holes.We finish by discussing which three East Lothian courses we would recommend to someone visiting the area, excluding North Berwick and Muirfield. Women's History Series, #2 of 4. In 1590, the king of Scotland fomented a witch hunt in North Berwick, implicating as many as 200 people, convicting 70, and executing as many as 50. He participated in the “questioning” of the accused, tearing confessions of treason and weather magic from their trembling lips. He sent those whom he “believed” conspired against him to their deaths. Why? Reading his witch-hunting treatise, Demonologie, one might assume it was because he feared the threat that magic-users posed to his country. But perhaps the shrewd and savvy king had other, more earthly reasons to stir up a panic that destroyed those who moved against him. What happens when a restaurant encourages people to put away their phones and simply talk to each other?At Bella Italia in North Berwick, Scotland, a simple sign on the door reads: "We do not have Wi-Fi. Talk to each other. Pretend it's 1995." That sign caught my attention while I was teaching at Queen Margaret University in Scotland.  But it was what happened inside the restaurant that stayed with me. Scottish interior designer and entrepreneur Emma Cross shares how childhood experiences, creativity, travel, and a willingness to say yes shaped her life and career.Emma Cross knew she wanted to be a designer when she was five years old.In this episode of Stories of Change & Creativity, I sit down with Emma Cross, a Scottish interior designer and entrepreneur, to explore the experiences that shaped her life and career.I first discovered Emma's shop while exploring North Berwick, Scotland. It's a 20 minute train ride from Queen Margaret University, home of our Texas State University Hub program.  Drawn in by the color and design, I was curious about the person behind the brand. Two of my Texas State University students selected Emma's business for our class branding project.  This gave me the perfect reason to reach out to Emma and learn more about her story.During our interview, Emma talked about growing up in the servants' quarters of a grand estate and how that experience shaped her dreams.  She told me she finds inspiration from travel, family and classic films. Emma was captivated by Doris Day's role as an interior designer in Pillow Talk, an early influence that helped spark a lifelong passion for design.   She still goes back to Doris Day's iconic style for ideas.  Emma's path to becoming an interior designer and entrepreneur wasn't a straight line.  She didn't get into art school. Historian William Dalrymple had a rarefied childhood on the windswept coast of Scotland. I flew on the shortest day of the year in the southern hemisphere, June 21, to the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere on June 22, when I landed in Athens, Greece, flying through and stopping off in Qatar overnight. Qatar's airport was immense.e I was shocked at how large it was. It was actually like a little city and quite the Commerce capital of the world from my perspective. You could stay there for weeks without going outside if you wanted to. There was just so much going on at any time of the day. I tried to access the airport lounge as I had a very long layover. Still, they insisted I couldn't check in until three hours before my flight or something like that, so I had to shop and come back. When I did go to the airport lounge, it was delightful, even at two in the morning. My credit card for this trip allowed me to use the Priority Pass lounges and even bring a guest, so I took advantage of that benefit and passed it on to others who became friends along the way. Now back to Greece. I didn't have a clear plan for what I was going to do in Athens. I stayed at a hostel located in a not-so-great area of the city. It was on the fringe, and by that I mean the only stores nearby were small markets that primarily sold take-out groceries. No other stores, such as dry cleaners or dog grooming shops, were in the neighborhood. The residents here were mainly short-termers, not people planning to stay for very long, hence markets that sold convenience goods. However, they were not called 7-11's or chain stores, and inside, they had a small selection because the stores were small for the most part. There were many intersecting streets, and not all of them had well-marked names. I also had some struggles with Google Maps on this trip, but I enjoyed the visit nonetheless. I went to an island called Hydra. The locals called Ira, and then I also went and visited an island called Paris. I stayed overnight on the island and had a pleasant visit, spending time swimming in the ocean, hiking along the shore, and exploring its natural beauty.  The next day, when I returned to Athens, I checked back into the hostel, more for convenience and budget, and stayed one more night. I did feel a bit more secure. I remember it being so hot that even several stores and shops had closed. I took a taxi to the Acropolis Museum and enjoyed the air conditioning inside before heading back to my Hostel. The next day, I took a train to Thessaloniki, a five-hour ride, and stayed there for two nights to explore the outskirts of other cities beyond Athens. I returned to Athens a few days later and visited the Acropolis, the architectural museum, as well as several other local places of interest. I flew to Krakow, Poland, and then to Warsaw, Poland. I then returned to Dansk for another night. These cities hold significant historical importance for World War II. However, when I arrived at Dansk, I saw the World War II museum and realized that it had many artifacts well displayed for the public. If you're in Dansk, Poland I recommend this museum. Some of the things I did in Dansk, such as getting a haircut and having a massage, were important for self-care. After, I flew to Finland and then took a ferry to Estonia for a few days. Then I went back to Helsinki and stayed some time there before going to Stockholm, Sweden, and then going to Oslo and then to Bergen, Norway for a few days, I went back to Oslo and then went to Copenhagen for a few days and then I went to our house denmark, and then back to Copenhagen before going to the Netherlands. I had a friend in the Netherlands. I visited Melvin, who lived in Amsterdam, but I also visited Haarlem, Rotterdam, and Harlem while I was there. Afterwards, I flew to Edinburgh, Scotland, and took a train to North Berwick, where I spent a wonderful day exploring, swimming, and getting to know the town. I left Edinburgh for Halifax, Nova Scotia, on July 27 and spent the next two weeks in Canada. I enjoyed the Eastern Canadian hospitality, the Celtic culture, and the nature I saw throughout the 1,500 kilometers I drove. I finished my week in Toronto, exploring Niagara Falls, the city, and its suburbs, and swam three times during my stay. It was hot before I came home to San Diego.   Smart Move and Slip-up pairings    My slip-up in Edinburgh was dropping my iPad on my tiny toe at 5 AM in the dark. I was hurt, but I didn't know how badly it had broken. Four other people were sleeping in my hostel room at the time. I was getting ready to leave for the airport when this happened. Still, three weeks later, my toe is sensitive, but I think it will be okay. My lesson for you is this: when you're packing your bags, turn the light on so you can see what won't fall on your foot.   60-second confidence challenge    Here's my challenge for you.   My travel challenge for you is to get to know your apps on your phone. Download at least three travel apps, including Google Maps, Rome2Rio, and consider moving it. You might have some other good apps that you would recommend, so please let me know what they are. You need these to help you navigate your way in a new city or a new country. Always download your city's Google map so that you have it if you're not in a Wi-Fi area. Download it in advance.   Resources Roundup    One of my favorite apps is called Currency. I can look at the currency of my current location and compare it to another currency, such as the US dollar or the currency of a destination I may be traveling to. This Currency App is a valuable resource that does not require Wi-Fi to use.   Take away mantra and goodbye.    Today's takeaway is about not trying to see everything on your first visit; save something for later. Agnes Sampson was a Scottish woman accused of witchcraft during the infamous North Berwick witch trials in the late 16th century. Known as the "Wise Woman of Keith," she was a healer and midwife, which made her a target for suspicion. In 1591, Sampson was arrested, tortured, and ultimately confessed to practicing witchcraft, including allegedly attempting to murder King James VI through sorcery.

Discover the extraordinary secrets of an incredible coastline to the east of Edinburgh in the County of East Lothian. It is an area of regal beauty with golden sandy beaches, medieval castles, the largest concentration of championship links golf courses in the world, gourmet restaurants and fabulous coastal and upland walks. We will then return to Edinburgh via East Fortune to see the extraordinary Museum of Flight and then onto Athelstaneford,  the village where the Scottish Flag, the Saltire, was born. We will pop into the lovely market town of Haddington to see it's lovely shops and cafés before having a look at the village of Gifford, a real hidden gem of a village with it's quirky cafés and ancient church with a connection to the American Declaration of Independence. Glenmore Lodge, the Scottish National Outdoor Training Centre, has recently established Scotland's first hill navigation training course to be delivered in British Sign Language. One of those involved in setting it up was deaf climber and mountaineer Morag Skelton. Mark chatted to Morag for the Scotland Outdoors podcast, and we hear an excerpt where they speak about her childhood outdoors and the practicalities involved in climbing when you can't hear. For our latest Scotland Outdoors podcast, Rachel went to meet M.T O'Donnell in her garden near Glasgow. M.T is the founder of Scotland Grows magazine and the host of the Scotland Grows Show podcast. She's keen on looking after her garden in a way that's nature friendly and as she tells Rachel, that even extends to dealing with slugs. On the shores of Loch Awe near Dalmally lies the very striking St Conan's Church. Mark went for a visit to explore its remarkable architecture, both inside and out. A few weeks ago, Mark and Rachel headed across to the island of Easdale which lies 15 miles south of Oban. They got the ferry from Seil and chatted to the boatman, Alan, about who lives on Easdale and who visits. Mark also chats to Bethan Smith who owns a soap making business on the island. And Rachel catches up with Mike Mackenzie who has lived there for decades. He tells her what the community is like and how he came to live on the wee island. If you looked up to the sky earlier this week you might have been lucky to catch a glimpse of the Perseid Meteor Shower. The Perseids are one of the most dramatic things to see in the night sky and the shower will be active for another week or so. Martha Kearney hears stories of recovery from the Firth of Forth. First, she takes to the water with guide Maggie Sheddan and skipper John McCarter to explore the iconic Bass Rock, a volcanic island just beyond the shores of North Berwick in East Lothian. A decade ago, Bass Rock became the world's largest colony of Northern gannets, home to over 75,000 breeding sites. Then, in 2022, Avian Flu hit the colony at the height of the breeding season. By 2023, the total population was estimated at just under 52,000 breeding sites, a decrease of over 30% from the count in 2014. But now, at the beginning of a new breeding season, hope is in the air as the gannets return to the rock. Meanwhile, back on dry land, another story of recovery unfolds. Over the winter months, North Berwick was hit by huge storms. Four-metre waves, in combination with spring tides, left behind a huge hole in the harbour wall. Martha speaks to Andrew Duns from the North Berwick Harbour Trust and harbour master Ricky Martin about the repairs that are now underway. The storms also shifted the sand dunes on the beaches around North Berwick. Emma Marriott, Conservation Assistant at the Scottish Seabird Centre, tells Martha about the post-storm beach cleans which unearthed ancient litter from the 1960s.
